Seiwa Market, 21815 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503

Seiwa Market is a Japanese grocery store that took over the old Fresh & Easy space in Torrance. It’s practically across the street from Tokyo Central and Mitsuwa.  Mitsuwa and Toyko Central are larger and have a much larger selection of prepared foods from their in-store deli.

Seiwa feels and looks more no frills and seems to be a bit cheaper. It has a bit of a warehouse store feel. It has what most Japanese grocery stores would have: fresh produce including some Japanese produce, fresh seafood, sushi, bentos, snacks, frozen food, green tea, noodles, rice, dishes, small kitchen appliances, bath & body products, etc. While there is no in-store bakery, they carry lots of items from Cream Pan, the Japanese bakery in Tustin. Love Cream Pan!

A lot of the meat and seafood is frozen. They had some prepared Hawaiian food in the deli section.

I found some cold brew coffee (imported from Japan) here that I didn’t see at Tokyo Central.

Sukiyaki don ($6.99) with pickled ginger, onions, thin slices of stewed beef, sukiyaki sauce, tofu cubes, rice, and clear noodles. It’s like the Yoshinoya beef bowl. The beef slices were very thin. I liked it. There wasn’t much sauce or beef but it wasn’t too salty and it was filling because of the amount of steamed white rice

Shiosake bento ($6.99): A small piece of salmon, tiny bits of macaroni salad, eggplant, multigrain steamed rice, burdock root. Small portion size but cheap. The salmon was on the dry side and the mac salad seemed to be just macaroni and mayo. Simple but not bad.

Miso soup packets ($3.59)

Kewpie yuzu & kosho dressing ($2.89 on sale)

Biblical Naming Puns in Quartz Plays

Both Levi and Isaac are biblical names whose meaning is explained in the text of Genesis. Shown here in the JPS translation, which includes in line explanations, in Genesis 29:34 we get Levi being given for its meaning as "to attach," or "to join." It shares a route with the word for wreath, so it could be said to have 'to join in a circle' connotation, which works very well with the etymology of kielce and circus, as well as the gear metaphor. He is the ringleader after all, another word that includes the connection to circles and rings.

Isaac comes from the word "to laugh". Shown is Genesis 17:19, though the incident it's referencing happens earlier. A fitting name for a clown, and even more fitting given some lines on Isaac's route, too. But again, this is a name picked based on the pun given in Genesis for it.

These are similar to Jacob in Mary Jane, which, according to Genesis 25:26 is a pun on the word for "heel". Mary names him that after getting the idea to make a doll out of corpse parts after picking up a heel off the beach.

Mary is almost certainly a biblical reference of a name, as well, but it isn't on the origin of the name and explanation for the word play involved.

These are all pretty specific references, but the pattern makes me fairly certain that all three are intentional.

Fun fact - Isaac is the father of Jacob who is the father of Levi, so this also represents three major generations of Genesis.

Whatever else he's got going on or shoved in that weird genius head of his, the Bible is clearly something in Neji's reference pool. Pretty deep-cut references too. With the "Raham" in Jire's poem, these represent some pretty close original textual readings. Some of the phrasing in the Jire poem also suggests at least a passing knowledge with Japanese Catholic liturgical phrasing or at least imitations there of.

But Neji's references don't stop here. The Oh Rama Havenna names seem to be based of Latin instead. He's dabbling in Greco-Roman mythology references elsewhere, Japanese mytho-history in I Am Death, linguistics, latin, possibly middle english, world literature, historical references and beyond. A fascinating place, Neji's mind.

So while I can totally see a reading that there's some religious background Neji is not telling us, I can also see him reading the bible from cover to cover with translation posts just for his reference pool "to make the greatest performance ever!"

So I was catching up on Tokyo Mew Mew New with a friend and we got to Episode 18, and uh. They've known about aliens for the last 5 years. Chimera Animals attacked 5 years ago. I know this was a thing in the manga and old run of the anime too but it's just now hitting that THEY KNEW. We only see the Chimera(s?) responsible in the anime adaptations, but they were AROUND FIVE YEARS AGO. Idk why this took so long to actually register but it kinda begs the question:

How long have Quiche, Pie, and Tart been away from home? How long were they traveling through the cold expanse of space on what could very well be a suicide mission? Two UMAs mentioned that are actually Chimeras are the Loch Ness Monster and Tsuchigumo. Nessie has been known about since the 1930s. Tsuchigumo is harder to pin down but apparently it's been recorded in folklore since the Edo period at LEAST, which is lasted from 1603 to 1867. Sure, there was some kinda resurgence in the 1970s, but what matters is Chimeras have been around for a WHILE and so has knowledge of aliens, though maybe the alien thing has been Less Known. I had this theory about Shinichiro and Izana for awhile. I undoubtedly believe Shin tried to find Izana because of Emma because who'd talk about Izana if not her? Not to mention, he was doing his best to make her feel at home with them when she's still trying to adjust being part of a different family. The thing is I don't think he searched for Izana immediately right after Emma kept telling him about her brother. While exceptionally kind, Shin was still a kid at that time with a ton of responsibilities and whose mother was bedridden in the hospital. Besides none of the adults looked for Izana so why should he? I think the final push for him to find Izana was when his mother died. Grief just does things to us that make us do the most absurd things. Like finding your sister's brother that you had never met before. In a way, it does line up with Shin's character if you consider his backstory. How he found Izana isn't mentioned and probably left out for everyone's interpretation because I don't think it's a matter of how but why. It felt very impulsive of Shin to search for Izana's whereabouts and then show up randomly to his institution one day to tell him he's his big brother—like did he even think about how Izana might take that? He's so young and Izana was too. Shin had good intentions of getting to know him better and he might've been attempting for Izana and Emma to meet. Sadly, everything just didn't turn out well like how it should have :')

While sorting through prints yesterday, I realized I have several that I'll never be able to frame unless I pay through the nose for custom frames or by my own mat cutter. They are Star Wars prints that were sold in blind packs in Japan and are 4 3/4 by 5 3/8. They did come wrapped in clear plastic pouches, so I'm tempted to just buy some fancy tape and tape them to a piece of cardboard and stick them on the wall. Or I might take one to Daiso and see if they have any clear plastic cases they'll fit in and do the same thing.
