Some fandoms are really weird and anti-oc and it's incredibly obvious! Just a little poke is all. :P I was inspired to put these together after I got rejected by an artist who ships Bagginshield but refused to draw Bofuranna.

I think there's no better fandom to be a nerd in than the Tolkien fandom. Mostly thanks to the professor himself. People I know be like "You're learning a language just because of a book?! Girl, you're so obsessed!"

Well, at least I'm just learning a language, not inventing one! And at least it's just one language, not ten! You think my hour long rants are annoying? You can be glad my current obsession-level is maybe 5% of Tolkien's, or we'd be having an entirely different conversation right now.

Really, Tolkien was the worst of all of us, and no one can tell me otherwise. You can also see in the way he wrote his characters that he was just fangirling the entire time. I literally see him waking his wife in the middle of the night, like "I can't sleep, I just keep thinking about Fingon, he's so cool and epic and tragic and aahhhhhh!". I also think nothing makes a better story than the author being just as much in love with the characters as the fans are.

When Fingon was young, he gave Maedhros one of his golden ribbons. Maedhros treasured it and tied his hair back with it or used it as a bracelet. Even when he couldn't visit Fingon, he still had something so special to remember him by. Then he was captured by Morgoth and the ribbon was taken along with everything else lovely he owned.

Imagine his joy when he was reunited with the person dearest to him and once again a golden ribbon was woven in his hair. When he awoke after being rescued, one was finally there again. A tangible reminder that he was safe.

Every time Maedhros saw Fingon ever after, Fingon would gift him another ribbon for his collection. They got lost sometimes in the ever increasing battles of Beleriand. It was no issue, as Fingon was always there to give him more.

Until Fingon perished in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and thus there would be no more ribbons as gifts. Maedhros kept his remaining ones safe and wore them scarcely as to not soil them or risk loss. Despite these precautious, bits of fabric were easy to loose in the wilds and one by one his collection dwindled. The final proofs of his bond slipping away, leaving only memories.

He maintained them throughout the lonely years he fostered Elrond and Elros until it was time for them to leave and move on in the world. As a gift he gave them his remaining two which they held onto throughout the years. Elros kept his in his diary as a bookmark and it came over to Rivendell with the Faithful. Elrond tied his onto his silver harp. A little reminder of where they came from.

Once it came time for Elrond to depart for Valinor, he brought both shining strands of gold with him and wove them into his hair as he landed on the shore. There waiting for him, were Maedhros and Fingon with hair shimmering like the sun. They both saw those familiar ribbons and smiled. For they rightly took it as a sign that their legacy and love had lasted.

Sign-ups for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2024 are now open!

If you’re new here, TRSB  is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event celebrating the talent of our fanwork creators. Participating artists create a piece of art to be claimed by a signed up author. Authors will then write a 5k word fic based on the art they chose.

All sign-up forms are available here!

As well as signing up as an author and/or artist, you can sign up as a beta, cheerleader, pinch hitter, or treat maker.

Explanations of what all of these mean can be found in the relevant section of our FAQ.  Sign-ups for these roles will remain open for the duration of the event and will get you access to the gallery. However, you must be signed up as an author to claim.

The event is open to all characters, genres and ratings, and all canons that fall under the Tolkien fandom umbrella. This includes movieverse (i.e. the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies), lesser known works by Tolkien (such as The Father Christmas Letters), and/or other works with a clear link to his life or creative output (for example, Tolkien's translations and academic texts, the 2019 Tolkien biopic, fan-made films like Born of Hope, and game canons such as The Lord of the Rings Online). Crossovers between two or more Tolkien canons are permitted.

I know a lot of people are like "Oh I wish Tolkien was still alive so he could see how much we as a fandom appreciate his work" and you are right but holy shit if the man would still be alive he would not have his peace, especially not if he had any social media or came in touch with the fandom in any other ways. People would ask him in his dms questions like "Is Fingon a top or a bottom?" (Pushing my bottom Fingon agenda shamelessly) "Would Thingol put pronouns in bio?" "Is Fingolfin in your opinion a himbo?" And he would have no idea what everyone was talking about. There would be people sending him Nsfw Bagginshield fanart and people would probably ask if Russingon is canon and the russingon discourse girlies would be so bitchy about anything he says about it. Even if he didn't say anything about russingon, they would still be so fucking annoying about him not saying anything. There would be people asking him about feanorian apologists and feanorian discourse and what was his opinion on them and he'd have no idea they even exist. People would push their discourse on him and he'd be so confused like what are you talking about. People would send him their headcanons and ask him to confirm them canon. "Hey Mr. Tolkien, is Tuor a trans woman confirmed?" "Mr. Tolkien sir, I think Aredhel is a lesbian and you can't convince me otherwise so you might as well confirm it."

Jrr Tokien would not have his peace from the absolutely unhinged community that is the fandom of his work.
