THE RETREAT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Quiver Distribution
SYNOPSIS: Renee and Valerie are a couple at a crossroads in their relationship. They decide to leave the city and spend the week at a remote cabin with friends. But when they arrive, their friends are nowhere to be found. They attempt to settle in and wait for their friends to return as they stumble through their relationship woes. They soon discover that they are being stalked. As they make their way back to the cabin they soon realize they are being hunted by a group of militant extremists who are determined to exterminate them.
REVIEW: Alyson Richards’s screenplay and Pat Mills’ direction come together to put a fresh spin on an often over exploited genre. While the threat is not supernatural, it does have this feeling of the 1972 film “Deliverance,” in that these city dwellers are out of their element. In this instance, the homicidal locals have premeditated the act as they are broadcasting their grisly deeds to fellow haters via the internet. Still, at the core of the story is the city folks versus the rural backwoods folks.
The filmmakers focus the story on Renee and Valerie. We are introduced to the friends at the beginning of the film, but they are clearly a hook in the story to get the female heroes out into the woods. They do a nice job of allowing us to spend enough time with these characters so we get to know them and where they are in the relationship so we are engaged in the drama. Actors Tommie-Amber Piri and Sarah Allen deliver excellent performances as they try to escape this dead;y encounter. Tommie-Amber Pirie has a more physical role as she appears to be street smart and is able to think her way out of her imprisonment and take action. Her performance has a gravitas that is believable without becoming, what could have been an over the top kind of butch role.
THE RETREAT has horror elements and I enjoyed the fact that they weren’t exploitative or gory. Granted their abductors are committing the most violents acts, but we see very little blood or gore. It was reminiscent of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” in that we remember it being more violent than it actually is due to what the filmmakers let you hear and see. THE RETREAT demonstrates a similar artistry in that regard.
The film offers some breathtaking cinematography, solid locations, and creative production designs that offer a contemporary take on the 70’s style of genre film. The character scenes at the beginning are edited at a pacing that keeps the story moving and maintains a nice energy level. Steph Copeland’s score does an excellent job of accentuating all the different emotions, drama, and horror of the film. It is a lingering presence in the background that makes you want to go back and listen to it, especially when you hear movements over the credits.
We live in a time where the technology to make a film is accessible to a wiser group of aspiring filmmakers. While filmmakers need a skill level to make a good looking movie, they may not be cinematic storytellers. The team of Pat Mills and Alyson Richards, as this is not their first time working together, possess both the skill and the talent to take a cliché plot and breathe some fresh life into it. I enjoyed the fact that they present some diverse characters that were realistically portrayed throughout the film. A solid, entertaining, thrill ride well worth the watch/ I’m absolutely interested in seeing what dark tale they might work together on next.
