From 1982, a lovely reading of the Sondheim standard by Ms. Johns, who died today, age 100.
Every headline I saw in searching her today noted something along the lines of "'Mary Poppins' Actress Glynis Johns Dies..." Given that she made more than 60 movies and appeared in more than 30 plays, that may not be the way she might've wanted to have been remembered any more than I assume Maggie Smith will want to have "'Harry Potter' Actress Dies."
She didn't have a lot of singing parts, but this is an immortal one.
Send in the Clowns - Glynis Johns (BBC Documentary Footage)
The great Glynis Johns, the original Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece, A Little Night Music, performs “Send in the Clowns.” For her role as Desiree Armfeldt, she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
She turns 100 years old today, October 5, 2023.
Glynis Margaret Payne Johns (born 5 October 1923) is a British retired actress, dancer, musician and singer. Recognized as an icon of screen and stage, Johns has a career spanning eight decades, in which she appeared in more than 60 films and 30 plays. She is the recipient of awards and nominations in various drama award denominations, including the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the Laurel Awards, the Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards and the Laurence Olivier Awards, within which she has won two thirds of her nominations.
She is more familiar to many as Winifred Banks, the wife of George Banks, mother of Jane and Michael, and member of Emmeline Pankhurst's "Votes for Women" suffrage movement, to which she is completely dedicated, in Mary Poppins (1964), considered to be Walt Disney's crowning live-action film achievement.
Brandon Uranowitz coming out of the gate swinging and making me cry with the first speech
& Juliet performance was not giving. i actually like the show but that's my least favourite song it in and i thought it was a weird choice
(The most iconic song they could have done would have been I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman and make the Tony's feel bad for not nominating Justin David Sullivan)
Michael Arden best speech hands down. Obsessed with him what a well deserved win (after being robbed for best direction for spring awakening AND once on this island)
(ok tbh I thought he won for once on this island until i googled it rn??? I guess i got it confused with it winning best revival)
Sweeney, Some Like it Hot and Shucked had the best performances tbh, good vibes and actually showed what the show was about
was SO stressed about best leading actor and was hoping Josh Groban could get his revenge but J. Harrison Ghee rightfully won it!
(people who are still mad about the 2017 Tony's I am here for you)
Also Alex Newell deserved it after being robbed for once on this island as well
Obsessed that we had two non-binary performers win but maybe can we talk about how we should fix the gendered categories??? Especially w/ Justin not being nominated
Also can we talk about best score and choreography not being shown??? what's up with that
"it's good for Lea Michelle that she's presented a Tony that year where there's no script" - what I sent to my friend during the show
tbh i have barely heard of Kimberly Akimbo but maybe I'll check it out? The song they did seems fun
I cannot explain the amount of rage that filled my body when Funny Girl did their performance.... Lea Michelle I am out to get you. Beanie Feldstein if you need someone to fight for you, you can count on me
anyways time to go into hibernation for another year (jk im seeing the Hadestown tour in like two months)
SONG OF THE WEEK “As Long As She Needs Me” by Davy Jones & Chris Andrews https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/as-long-as-she-needs-me This was one of Davy Jones’s last studio recordings made before he passed away on February 29th, 2012. It’s a refashioning of a song from the award-winning musical “Oliver!”—of which he had a long and remarkable association with. The musical also brought him together with actor/musician Chris Andrews as they met during the “Oliver!” production in 1962. They remained friends and creative collaborators all the years since. Chris produced this demo of “As Long As She Needs Me.” He recalls, "The track was a random idea really. Not only is it a great song, because it was from ‘Oliver!’ (sung by the female lead character Nancy*), it held a lot of sentimental value, due to both David and my connection to the show...a very memorable time!! I thought that having a male take on it (changing the 'he' to 'she') would be interesting too. I recorded the track after returning from the US to the UK round about the the time his SHE album was released, so very much with David in mind." https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/as-long-as-she-needs-me
*played by Georgia Brown in the musical's classic line-up of the 1960s.
🇫🇷 #OnThisDay in 1985... the musical, "Les Misérables" opened at London's Barbican Centre. It has become London’s longest running musical and is currently at home in the Sondheim Theatre.
