His Knight by Charity Parkerson
Tumblr media
Series: Shining Armor, #1 Read time: 2 Days Rating: 3/5 Stars
The Quote: “This is Benjamin Lee. Please don’t shoot me. I’m already having a really shitty day.” — Benny
I don't know what to make of the end of this. It loses down to 3 stars due to the ending. It's so controlling and manipulative. There is a scene that runs dangerously close to being a form of rape. If you are a fan of Asian drama it is kinda close of TorFight in Why RU? (especially when watched with one particular set of subs). The plot is okay. But I feel there are some moments of serious hero complex. I'm just conflicted, or I was until I started writing (I really dislike it). As such, quick review I hope.
I do like the characters. Benjamin "Benny" Lee is just sweet, his insecurity and isolation leanings are backed by his history and just seem right. Wyatt Knight is a typical high-end police, loyal, strong and fierce. He has a little bit of trauma gained at the start of the book, and not handled. I find Wyatt and Benny together are just weird, I have resounding negative feelings about them. I'm not sure if it is the characters of Charity's execution of their relationship. Charity Parkinson has made an impressive choice with the two maternal figures of the story. Elle is that warm, motherly, loving and protective type that is so common in this type of romance novel. But Benny's mother is a whole other deal. Benny's mother is North Korean, trapped in North Korea after being deported back there, she is the reason Benny does what he does. They are polar opposites while both being supportive of their sons.
That storyline with Jayden is written in well. Jayden is a complicated character. He is already showing himself two have more than one side. Jayden is lonely, a bit broken and needs love. We actually get to see the side of him that is fierce and caring. I do like that we met him through Wyatt they are more than a little complicated. He deserves his happiness with Darrel (book 3, His Salvation) not all readers will think that at first but trust me by the time you finish you will.
Some quotes:
There had to be at least five shooters. All in full riot gear with automatic weapons. Wasn’t this high school shit? Who shot up a college campus? — Five is a lot for a campus shooting, like unheard of from what I saw, some minor realism would be appreciated. As for that who shoots up a college campus? It's not nearly as common, I'm guessing something to do with attendance being a choice and campus size, but it's not as uncommon as we'd like to think. (Benny)
Two members of his team were dead. Their funerals had passed without Wyatt in attendance. — Well fu** you very much for that. Way to make a man bitter. (Wyatt)
He couldn’t even find one person to go to the movies with and these five people found one another to go on a killing spree. Life was funny. Popularity was wasted on the popular. — Jesus that is just grim. I mean I appreciate the quote and the thought but it is good. (Benny)
“I’m sure she’d love to have you, but then I wouldn’t get to do this,” Wyatt said, capturing the man’s lips." — Well sweetie, that went from I-can't-do-this-it's-unprofessional to kissing Benny in maybe a page and a half. I think I'm almost impressed at the speed.
“She assumed, since you’re bi, you’d be open to having other men join you,” — FFS Kayla. I can't even with you girl. Between this and your actions later... 🤬🥊 (Benny)
“I get the feeling you’re an old man trapped in a twenty-two-year-old body.” — This is in reference to Benny. It's a recurring line and theme. Honestly, it is true and a mood for me. (Wyatt)
There are some good moments in the second half that I would share but I'm not sure where the spoilers are for this and I'm not sure I have the motivation to spend more time on this review.
I will likely read others in the series because Richie's (book 2, His Loss) sounds appealing as a set-up. All of them work on the stressful situation principle to open, campus shooting, stuck lift and claustrophobia and a bank robbery. Call it a series of attempts to defy the Speed principle. I'm hoping it is still known what I mean by that but it comes from the last times of the film "I have to warn you, I've heard relationships based on intense experiences never work. OK. We'll have to base it on sex then. Whatever you say, ma'am." (Jack Traven and Annie Porter)

Why R U: HORRIBLE SUBS EDITION
I need to yell for a sec about the subs on Fighter's texts to Tutor, because they have LITERALLY NOTHING to do with what he actually wrote! Props to the translators for the entire rest of the episode, but wtf is this??
Tumblr media
WHAT IT ACTUALLY SAYS:
Fighter: Get well soon, Tor
Fighter: If you need anything, let me know
Tumblr media
WRONG AGAIN:
Fighter: But I'm going back for today... I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable
?!?!?
This changes the whole tone of that scene! Fighter wasn't throwing money at Tutor or overstepping or being anything but The Sweetest Boyfriend ™.
Anyway, just thought y'all should know.

Ram King Tent Scene Meta
Okay, now that I have already written King’s POV of the kiss scene and am working on Ram’s I have to put some of the stuff I noticed into a meta, because the ficlet will be overloaded with all of the things I noticed while rewatching and writing, because that SCENE just keeps getting better and better the more I watch.
The Tent scene. Things that got to me in no particular order.
 -          The way King is shouting. It hurts to hear it because it’s so contrary to his kind behavior and soul and manner with people and Ram otherwise. I did realize I heard his voice like this before, though. When he was trying to fend off dogs. You know, the thing that he is terrified of. So he definitely is shouting to fend off something he is afraid of too here, and it hurts all the more because I feel Ram is aware of it, he is so aware of a lot of things about King I believe after watching this scene. And it hurts him to be part of something that frightens and distresses King so much.
-          How Ram deals with King’s physical and verbal attempts to push him away. He consistently puts himself back in the picture, even after King pushes him out of the frame, and yes, pun intended. Because once Ram cares, he is not easily thrown, yeah no, I am not done with the punning yet. He is relentless in demonstrating to King he’s there. Which brings me to:
-          I believe the way he approaches King here would be very similar how he would approach a dog, or a cornered animal, that is hurt or scared and thus defensive and showing its teeth. King acts like a wild and wounded and possibly drunk, heh, animal here, really, on some level, and that is not meant to be derogatory. Ram is definitely caring alpha leader of his doggy pack, so he knows how to speak THAT LANGUAGE. Notice it’s a nonverbal one. The way he builds himself up as a calm but solid bodily presence right in King’s line of sight, the way he does not waver in that energy, making his voice decisive or soft but always calm, trying to break through King’s fear, trying to form a connection – the acting on this one whew. The way he inches closer. And comes back after being shoved, non-violent but reliable. Dare I say  asserting dominance, because King is struggling here and needs an anchor.
-          Those sad, sad eyes, and that voice, Perth, like, come on. I believe Ram is suffering so much here, because King is suffering, like when he let him dig his nails into his hand to get him through getting stitches. Ram will bear King hurting him, as long as he knows it is helping to get King through his struggle. He takes the verbal and physical shoves, in the hope that it will help King work through what makes him suffer. And he will hurt along with it just because it hurts him to see King aching. Gah. No wonder King eventually breaks confronted with those eyes.
-          The “why?”. Three times, just that word. In that voice that says I just want to get through to you, TALK to me, I want to help you, barking feral dog bound to a tree – sorry – I want to understand and want you to understand, we’re getting there, there is no need to be scared, not of me, not of those feelings. Gah.
-          King’s facial expressions. The way he wavers face and voice – I love the dynamic cadences of Lay’s voice – the way he plays with showing his teeth, pushing his chin up, contrasted with insecure skips when he is confessing, his defiant tone, because this man is on a mission – protect Ram from King’s feelings, duh, he wavers but comes back to it all fight, all shout, all flashes of eyes. The you want the truth i’ll give you the truth! the drunk hair flip. Oscars, now.
-          The fricking Kiss.
-          The montages were good too, but I’ve seen so many fanvids that I rather skip to the new content. But they were well chosen scenes. Like, there’s the theme of hands and touch right before Ram’s hands come up to frame King’s face.
-           The way Ram’s lips move after King tells him it’s torture, like trying to absorb, to understand. Again with the EYES.
-          Ram’s reaction to hearing the truth. There’s a light flicker on his face but other than that he doesn’t visibly react to King’s confession, which I think is so powerful? Because he has been holding up that energy and that connection, and he doesn’t want to break it. He also doesn’t look relieved because how can he when King is still in so much pain?  I think he possibly knew that it would be somewhat of that motivation that drove King to act like he did, some way of protecting Ram from him, in a way. Also there’s the I am obviously floored part because King, how can you understand me so much and not understand that about me… how can you see other people so cleverly, but not see this? And there is the PAIN of that realization, of how much King is hurting, when it should not be necessary. Of how tragic and lovable and stupid or boy King is and of how much we love him. Ram loves him, I mean.
-          The fricking Kiss. You know, the one where King pushes Ram away again one more time, like, this time with his mouth. That kiss that really starts when Ram kisses King back, and oh how was I awakened from my grave. Because here’s another non-verbal language that Ram speaks. It’s kissing, duh. Nah, I mean, you know how you can kiss with your whole body, hands coming up and creating that space just the two of you are in, the caress of his hands, the soft guiding of King’s face, the slow steady force of it, and the gentle, the gentle, all the affection he pours into it, because King if you didn’t understand, maybe you understand THIS? Don’t bet on in Ram, see next morning, but YEAH? And Kings face of pain in between? And Rams sure way of going in again, so gentle, so full of affection and care and what a STATEMENT? I am sure I am not done talking about this, but I’ll end here, because I just remembered I have to rewatch something. Bye.
