10 February - Joe and Taylor go to Harry's local, the Spaniards Inn Hampstead Heath ...... Harry was in LA on the 12th. Seen walking in Paris in March and not again for 7 months.

12 February - Joe and Taylor attend the BAFTAS Taylor is photographed having dinner with Liam Payne

5 March - Taylor things before 30 article, includes that Andrea is again in treatment

1. September by Earth, Wind & Fire - obvious reasons, but it’s been playing at work a lot.

2. Want it Back by Amanda Palmer - the beat alone.

3. Apparition by Troy Baker - this whole song is a jam, but the outro especially!

4. America’s Sweetheart by Elle King - thanks to Ginny and Georgia, this song is one of my recent faves

5. Fade by Alan Walker (NCS Version) - I was obsessed with this song a few years ago, and no I’m not kidding.

DESTINATIONS:

1. Scotland/Ireland- they’ve been on my list since I was a kid, and I will not rest until I get there. I am completely convinced that I will cry upon seeing any of the nature there.

2. Australia/NZ- I need to go, but for an extended period of time. I know the flight is long, but I want to get over my flying anxiety and just live.

3. Anywhere in Canada - specifically Toronto, Montreal, New Foundland, and Banff. I went to Toronto and Montreal two separate summers when I was in my early teens, roughly ten years ago and I loved it. I just want to explore those cities as an adult and less like a tourist.

4. England - I have a very close friend who I went to school with that lives in London, and England has always been one of those places I’ve wanted to go since I was a kid.

5. Oregon/California - A little more domestic, but I want to get to the west coast at some point and hike. That’s it, that’s my reasoning.

MEMORIES:

(this is tough, my memory sucks)

1. The Women’s March in 2018, being surrounded by incredible people, having gathered a group from school and guiding them to the UWS where the march started. I was looking at pictures on IWD and reminiscing - it was beautiful out, maybe 60 F, and it was just a celebration of women, of love, of each other.

2. My solo Boston trip from 2019. I took a train from NYC to Boston and explored the city by myself for five days. I’ve never gone anywhere alone before, but I needed to and my god was it one of the best experiences of my life. I cannot wait to go back.

3. Going to baseball games when I was a kid, or really any time. There is nothing like New York baseball, and I will forever stand by that.

4. Surprising my friend up at her school for her birthday our freshman year of college. She nearly tackled me to the floor when she walked in the room.

5. Seeing the Nutcracker at Christmas with my grandma at Lincoln Center back in 2018. She came in from Florida to see me at school and surprised me with tickets since we’ve always wanted to go. We went to one of our favorite Italian restaurants, and cried the while watching the performance.

Bonus memory - since I’m thinking of my grandma, she and my grandpa would take me a few times a year to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, a hub for Italian markets that they both have been going to since they were younger than I am now. It was something they only did with me (which felt like a goddamn triumph, since I constantly felt like I was competing with my cousin), and we all went two years ago when they came to visit me.

I need to call them, I really miss them.

Upcoming Movies in October 2020: Theaters, Streaming and VOD

October looks a lot different than it did only a few weeks ago. As the month many movie theater owners were hanging their hats on with the hope of a weekly deluge of new movies , October has recently been vacated by high profile features that include Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile, and Candyman.

Yet if you’re a cinephile or movie lover who is desperate for new stories and visions, it is not all doom and gloom. Between the streaming market of Netflix, VOD, and other platforms, as well as some smaller films willing to roll the dice on a limited theatrical release, there are still more than a few things to see in October 2020…

2067

October 2 (U.S. Only)

A high-concept science fiction setup if we’ve ever heard one, 2067 is the story of Ethan Whyte (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young man born in a dystopian future where he learns that he might be the savior of humanity… at least that’s what people from an even more distant future are saying. In a plot twist that sounds, at least on paper, akin to a reversal of The Terminator, messengers from the future say Ethan is the key to saving the world and wish to transport him via time machine to an unknowable destiny. Chaos ensues. It’s a big idea, but we’re always game for someone swinging big in this genre.

Death of Me

October 2 (November 23 in the UK)

Darren Lynn Boseman, director of Saw II through Saw IV, returns to the horror genre again alongside Nikita’s Maggie Q and Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth. In this VOD release, the pair play a vacationing couple who wake up on an island with a horrible hangover. Yet a video on their phones seems to suggest the night before was even worse: Neil (Hemsworth) spent the evening brutally murdering his wife, as per the screen in their pockets. Nevertheless, here they are now, left with a lot of questions of what happened yesterday… and what can happen today.

Black Box

October 6

The first of Amazon Prime and Blumhouse Productions’ “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour’s Black Box has a tantalizing premise. Nolan (Mamoudou Athie) survived a car accident that took his wife, but it also took large swaths of his memory of her. So in order to regain his memory, and regain a sense of stability for his young daughter, Nolan undergoes an experimental treatment where his psychologist uses hypnosis to thrust him into his subconscious where he’ll be able remember his past and face his personal demons. Literally.

Like something out of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, this horror movie shows how scary being trapped in dreams really is if all that’s in them is the stuff of nightmares…

The Lie

October 6

The second Amazon/Blumhouse feature is more of a psychological thriller than a straightforward horror movie. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, The Lie follows a father (Peter Sarsgaard) who discovers his daughter Kayla (Joey King) accidentally killed her friend… until she admits she may have actually murdered her.

How far will he go to cover-up his daughter’s sins? Well, that’s the logline, and it seems to be a gripping one, albeit reviews from TIFF were less than kind two years ago.

Hubie Halloween

October 7

Last year Adam Sandler warned the Academy that if he doesn’t win an Oscar for Uncut Gems he’d make a film so bad that it’d make “you all pay.” Well, he wasn’t even nominated and eight months after the ceremony, here we are with Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. It remains to be seen whether this is actually the bad one—for starters it filmed before Oscar nominations went out—but it is still very much a Happy Madison production, complete with major supporting roles for Kevin James and Rob Schneider.

Horror Movies on HBO Max: Hammer Films, It Chapter 2, Us, to Arrive in October

In the movie, Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the town loser of Salem, Massachusetts. A lonely fry cook obsessed with Halloween, Hubie spends all year looking forward to decking out his home and town the same way Clark Griswold anticipates Christmas. But on this particular Halloween, the town appears besieged by actual supernatural forces, and finally Hubie will have his time to shine. Eh, it looks more amusing than The Do-Over and The Ridiculous 6?

Books of Blood

October 7 (U.S. Only)

Who doesn’t love anthological horror? Hulu certainly does, as they’re releasing Books of Blood, the latest adaptation of Clive Barker’s multi-volume series of short stories by the same name. Previous tales from Books of Blood have been adapted into movies as beloved as Candyman and as decidedly not as Rawhide Rex. In this film version, three stories are created for the screen by co-writer and director Brannon Braga. Here’s hoping it lands closer to the former?

Saint Maud

October 9 (UK Only)

The UK will be the first to get A24’s only horror movie this year. Lucky. The feature directorial debut of Rose Glass, Saint Maud follows an unhealthily repressed and zealous young woman: Maud (Morfydd Clark). Maud is technically a caretaker by trade, looking after people in hospice. But she also imagines herself to be something of an apostle, sent to save godless folks from their sins, particularly Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), the woman she’s living with as the in-home nurse.

It’s already a tense situation, even before Maud starts hearing voices and having images of ecstasy and Heaven, and demons and Hell. Rich with atmosphere and grueling anticipation of something horrible happening, Saint Maud is a great debut for Glass and a potential star-maker for Clark, who is skin-crawlingly pious as Maud, the young woman who’s wound up tighter than a jack-in-the-box.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow

October 9 (U.S. Only)

Debuting in theaters and on VOD, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is Jim Cummings’ follow-up to Thunder Road. That earlier, underrated movie was a delightful mix of comedy and drama that won the SXSW Grand Jury Prize. So the sophomore effort being a werewolf comedy-horror movie is intriguing. Indeed, Wolf of Snow Hollow is the rare lycanthrope yarn that’s told from the point-of-view of the would-be wolf hunter, Sheriff John Marshall (Cummings).

Following a series of grisly murders every full moon, the residents of Snow Hollow become convinced they have a wolfman on their hands, even if the frustrated sheriff refuses to accept the obvious. The film also marks the final performance of Robert Forster as John’s crusty mentor.

The War with Grandpa

October 9 in the U.S. (October 16 in the UK)

For most people, having Robert De Niro as a grandfather can be an imposing experience. But kids these days! That’s at least one amusing takeaway from The War with Grandpa, the delayed family movie that sees De Niro’s grandfatherly Ed enter into a prank war with his grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) after upsetting the youth by moving into his old bedroom—Peter’s mom and Ed’s daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) forced them into the arrangement.

While both young women are gifted pianists, Vivian is a prodigy and the center of Juliet’s envy. That is until Juliet finds the diary of another child prodigy at their prestigious conservatory who killed herself. The book includes all the late pianist’s hidden compositions… and symbols and incantations.

Ever heard the story of Faust? It seems like Juliet is about to get an up-close modern example.

Evil Eye

October 13

As the final Blumhouse effort to be released on Amazon Prime in 2020, Evil Eye hails from directors Elan and Rajeev Dassani and presents itself as both a psychological thriller and supernatural chiller. The truth of which it really is depends on how much you believe the eye of Usha (Sarita Choudhury).

The Trial of the Chicago 7

“The whole world is watching.” That’s the chanted refrain of protestors in Aaron Sorkin’s second movie as director, but it might also apply to the level of anticipation regarding this major Netflix release and potential awards season darling. The movie itself is an old-fashioned legal thriller like Sorkin cut his teeth on with scripts like A Few Good Men, but Chicago 7 feels urgently (and depressingly) vital.

Following on the heels of the Chicago riots during the Democratic National Convention of 1968—riots later deemed to have been started by the police—eight men categorized as “the far left” are rounded up for a show trial by Nixon’s Justice Department where they’re charged with conspiracy.

The film features the same blistering abundance of dialogue Sorkin has become famous for, as well as his penchant for breezy fast-paced editing. But the political heft of the subject matter and the movie’s deep bench of an acting ensemble that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Rylance, and Frank Langella is what makes this one of the most thrilling movies of the year.

Honest Thief

October 16 (U.S. Only)

Liam Neeson plays a thief who wants a second chance. A bank robber willing to turn himself and $9 million in to be with the new love of his life. But then crooked FBI agents (Jai Courtney and Anthony Ramos) steal his money and frame him for murder instead. So he’s left with one thing to do: menacingly hiss over the phone, “I’m coming for you.” We imagine that trailer-ready threat was what Honest Thief was sold on during its elevator pitch.

Rebecca

October 21

Remaking Alfred Hitchcock remains a tricky proposition that has thwarted many filmmakers in the past. Readapting the only one of his movies to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Rebecca, appears all the harder. Yet everything we’ve seen from Ben Wheatley and Netflix’s luscious adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel is highly encouraging.

With a winning cast that includes Lily James as the new Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer as her husband Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas as his menacing housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the film opens with the young bride trying to step into the shoes of Maxim’s dead first wife, Rebecca. An apparent light of his mansion that has been long snuffed, Rebecca’s flame burns still if only because of Mrs. Danvers’ admiration for her late mistress… and maybe the ghost who prowls the house. This is archetypal Gothic horror, and with screenwriter Jane Goldman apparently keeping the novel’s original ending, we already feel seduced by the imagery.

On the Rocks

October 2 in the UK (October 23 in the U.S.)

Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray work together again. For the first time since their luminous Lost in Translation (if you ignore the ill-considered A Very Murray Christmas), the director and star are collaborating on this visibly intimate tale. It’s about an adult daughter (Rashida Jones) and her famous father (Murray) spending a weekend in New York City on an adventure after years of estrangement.

Once more a woman in the midst of an existential crisis is aided by Murray between glasses of scotch. Who doesn’t want to pull up a seat and order another round?

Over the Moon

October 23

You probably don’t know Glen Keane’s name but you should. The longtime Walt Disney Animation Studios animator oversaw the design and animation of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin in Aladdin, and Rapunzel in Tangled. With Over the Moon, he steps away from the Mouse and toward Netflix as a first-time co-director, alongside John Kahrs (an animator on Tangled and Frozen).

The trailer for the film is like a Georges Méliès fever dream from as a little girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket ship to take her to the moon. But once there, Fei Fei and friends meet a mythical moon goddess (Hamilton’s Phillipa Soo) who takes them on a candy-colored odyssey through the cosmos.

Synchronic

October 23 (U.S. only)

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of the most intriguing new voices in science fiction. If you don’t recognize their names, go watch The Endless right now. One of the strangest and cleverest sci-fi yarns of the last decade, that film is now being followed up by Synchronic, another original tale that stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. The specifics of the film remain vague other than it is about two New Orleans paramedics who investigate a series of murders caused by a new, bizarre designer drug. But we already know we can’t wait to watch what horrible side effects come from these poor bastards taking it.

The Craft: Legacy

It cannot be Halloween without at least one more horror movie coming out the week of. Thus enters The Craft: Legacy, Sony Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ legacy sequel to the original 1996 The Craft. Like its predecessor, this follows an outsider who is the new girl in school (Cailee Spaeny). She may be ostracized by the popular kids, but she befriends fellow students who have alternative tastes… like witchcraft.

The original is a touchstone for millennials and Gen-Xers of a certain age, and this reboot looks to push the story into a more complex understanding of friendship. And if it doesn’t, it’s still a Blumhouse effort so it should have plenty of spooky jumps!

Relic

October 30 (US Only)

Dementia is at the heart of this very eerie chiller where three generations of women convene in an old family home which seems to be rotting from the inside. Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote star in a slow build drama which delves into the horror of losing your sense of self, as Nevin’s matriarch goes missing for days and can’t remember what happened while her house is filled with odd notes, black mould and snippets of a life slipping away from her grasp. This is the feature debut of Australian-Japanese director Natalie Erika James and it’s a stylish, chilling and confident first feature with a final act that veers into full blown horror. Out already in the States on VOD it has a UK theatrical release in the UK.

Everyone remembers their first time. They compare it to feeling like a kid on Christmas morning and recall their phones exploding with more notifications than humanly possible to respond to. Some need to take a step back in order to fully understand the significance of the moment—when Meghan Markle gave their fashion brand her personal stamp of approval.

Influencer marketing may be powerful, but these brands can attest: Not much compares to the Duchess of Sussex's being photographed wearing one of your pieces, triggering the Meghan Markle Effect. It can shift conversations entirely for those already established brands, and it can throw a little-known at-home operation onto the global stage in an instant.

“In terms of growing our business exponentially, Meghan has enabled us to do this in a very tangible, immediate way,” says James Bartle, founder and CEO of Outland Denim. The Australian brand is on a mission to create responsibly made denim while supporting ethical work conditions, especially in its facility in Cambodia. Markle wore the label repeatedly during her royal tour of Australia in 2018, and its sales skyrocketed, allowing the under-the-radar business to grow. “You cannot put a price on the brand recognition nor the credibility that the duchess is able to bestow on a small, socially oriented enterprise such as ours,” says Bartle.

Outland's success story isn't unique. Sentaler

Meghan Markle was initially introduced to Sentaler when she visited the flagship showroom while living in Toronto. She had been seen wearing Sentaler coats in Toronto while out and about as well as while she was filming Suits. Before her engagement to Prince Harry, it was amazing to see her continue to wear the brand. She was seen wearing the Sentaler Royal Baby Alpaca Classic Wrap in Sand Grey, which instantly spiked global demand and we now call the Meghan Wrap.

The most significant appearance—and one of the most memorable days for me as a designer—was when Meghan once again appeared in Sentaler during her first official appearance with the queen, during the Christmas service in Sandringham in 2017. She wore the Long Wide Collar Wrap Coat in Camel, a signature style that has been in my collections from the early days. She styled it impeccably, and I was so honored that she chose to wear Sentaler on such a significant day for her.

Charlotte Elizabeth

On March 23, 2018, the Duchess of Sussex stepped off a plane in Belfast, where she was attending a royal engagement alongside Prince Harry. This was one of their final outings before the wedding, so the Meghan Markle Effect was in full force. At the time Charlotte Elizabeth was running from my bedroom—among bags here, there, and everywhere in my parents' house!—so it felt monumental seeing the duchess happily wearing the Chestnut Bloomsbury bag so beautifully among other well-respected designers. It was the most surreal day of my life.

Within seconds of the duchess wearing the Bloomsbury, we had orders from around the world. Our Instagram pretty much broke my phone. At that moment in time, I was a one-man band, so it was a pretty crazy experience, to say the least!

Over the weekend that followed the royal engagement, I began to realize the [impact of] the Meghan Markle Effect. Because each bag was handmade, we had to extend the wait time to eight months. We worked tirelessly to fulfill every order. It was tough to go from bedroom business to a larger one overnight and sacrifice other parts of life, but I have learned so many invaluable lessons throughout this experience, which has set me up for our future at Charlotte Elizabeth. An industry expert told me that what I experienced in a year was what most start-ups would in 10 years, so I’m grateful for every lesson and challenge I learned from.

Eventually we caught up with our wait list, which was the greatest sense of relief ever. I ordered myself a big cheesy pizza and I finally got some sleep (without dreaming of packing up bags for delivery)! I'm really excited to announce that we will be launching new Charlotte Elizabeth products later this year. It really is down to each and every individual supporting us to get us to where we are and where we are going. I'm deeply grateful to have been given such a tremendous opportunity and wish to use our success to inspire other women to go after their own dreams.

The first time the Duchess of Sussex appeared in Outland Denim was October 17, 2018, during the duke and duchess's visit to Dubbo. At the time I was in Cambodia visiting our production facility. I woke up to hundreds of notifications on my phone. Our staff couldn't quite believe a duchess was wearing our jeans! Meghan continued to wear her Harriet Black jeans several times during that visit.

Meghan's choosing to wear Outland Denim once is a reflection of alignment with our values. But the fact that she has chosen to wear the brand multiple times shows her preference for the product’s fit, comfort, and style, and perhaps a desire to help us achieve our mission as well. It's her subtle, dignified way of saying she cares about the work we are doing.

Meghan has opened doors for Outland Denim. She’s enabled us to not only create visibility for our brand globally but also to tell our story around the employment of vulnerable women and sustainability. We were simply delighted when Meghan Markle chose to carry our Strathberry Midi Tote during her first royal engagement with Prince Harry in Nottingham in 2017. Then seeing her in our hometown of Edinburgh with our East/West Mini was an absolute honor. Her outing in Dublin was a special one for me, being from the Emerald Isle.

It was her royal highness's visit to the island nation of Tonga, where she wore a custom Theia gown to the state dinner hosted by the king and queen at Nuku'alofa. I felt like a six-year-old on Christmas morning! I was running around the house screaming with delight at 5:25 a.m.

It was a remarkable vote of confidence in Theia, to have been chosen to be included in that all-important royal tour, knowing every outfit would be scrutinized by the entire world. Her royal highness looked absolutely radiant, and the positive reviews she received the world over in our ivory gown were thrilling. “Why do you care that Prince Harry got engaged? What does that have to do with you?”

When I hear these questions, I think of the weeks before and after November 27, 2017. And I think of the following story, one that is incredibly personal, but one that means so much to me.

This time last year, things in my life were... not so good, to put it simply.

Over the week of Thanksgiving 2018, the following things happened:

My boyfriend had just broken up with me weeks before, and my best friend and I weren’t speaking. I was lonely and sad and heartbroken and I couldn’t talk to anyone about it because my best friend and I were on bad terms.

My dad got on an emergency plane to Ohio to discuss treatment and surgical options because my older sister had just been diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer.

My grandma, who was in a private room in a nursing home at the time, was forced to move to a double room, and she did not react well (she would die barely a month later). I had to be there multiple times a week to ease her into a roommate situation, after 16 years of living alone.

I was forced to manage an entire office during the holiday season by myself because my boss was on vacation and my dad was with my sister.

Between the nursing home, my extended family, my clients, and my boss, my phone rang seventy-two times the day before Thanksgiving. 72. That doesn’t include calls I made myself. All while I was trying to wrap things up at work, peek in the nursing home to check on my grandma, and handle cooking dinner.

Because my dad was in Ohio, I had to cook all of Thanksgiving dinner by myself.

My dog ripped his ear open on something while I was at work the day before Thanksgiving and I had to run him to the vet mere minutes before they closed. He got blood all over my apartment and guess where Thanksgiving was held last year? You guessed it - my apartment.

My dad arrived home at 8pm on Thanksgiving Eve, and I couldn’t get down to the city to pick him up from the airport while still cooking dinner. My mom and my sister couldn’t handle the traffic so he had to take an Uber all the way to my house, except his phone was at 1% battery and he had never taken an Uber before. My dad is... not fond of doing new things, to put it lightly. I spent an hour on the phone - instead of doing the nine million other things I needed to do - because he’s kind of helpless, not going to lie.

Then Thanksgiving Day came. My dad was supposed to get up early and give me a hand with everything. They were at my house - all three of them - and I could have used a hand with the turkey, the stuffing, etc. But, I didn’t get an ounce of help. They kicked back, relaxed, and talked a lot about how tired they were from their busy week. They drank. I didn’t get to kick back and relax, and I’d argue my week was the busiest out of all of theirs.

I didn’t say a word. I was tired, I was hurt, I felt lonely and abandoned and used. I didn’t say a word.

Hours and hours and hours later, everybody was gone, except for my parents. My dad fell asleep on the recliner, my mom was watching TV on the couch, and I - finally, after a long day of cooking and cleaning and acting the happy hostess - had time to take a peek at my phone.

And when I got to Tumblr, I knew something big was happening. Rumors were buzzing about Prince Harry getting engaged. These rumors weren’t just regular tabloid fodder, either. We knew that Ms. Meghan Markle was in London, and that she had just gotten a manicure and a facial. We had only recently seen them together for the first time at the Invictus Games in Toronto, so we knew their relationship was serious. We knew that even the most reputable royal reporters were murmuring amongst themselves. People who hadn’t been on Tumblr for months, years, even, were coming back in droves to be here for when the bomb finally hit - for when The Prince of Wales announced the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle.

Needless to say, I was freaking out. Once I pieced things together, I literally screamed. In doing so, I woke up my dog, and, more unfortunately, my dad. He was stressed, he had been drinking, he was tired, and he hates being woken up. I’m not going to get into the details, but the ensuing few hours were... not fun. I had all but forgotten about the good news that Prince Harry may be engaged. Things at home were just too miserable.

Then, the next day... nothing. And the next day. And the next day. And I had all but forgotten about the one tiny thing that made me happy on Thanksgiving Day, the one glimmer of hope and happiness between a terrible week and a terrible end to my holiday.

And then, Monday morning, I knew my dad was still feeling guilty - as he should have. I wasn’t answering his calls or texts really, not since he left my house the Friday before. But, at 6:30 AM on the morning of November 27, 2017, I got the text from my dad that changed my entire mood, my entire week, month, year, even:

“Happy engagement”

When I first read it, groggy after waking up on a Monday morning, I had no clue what it meant. And then - I realized. I checked the Kensington Palace Twitter and Instagram feeds, and then I checked Tumblr. I swore I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Once I finally came to the conclusion that I wasn’t dreaming, that what I was reading was real....

I screamed, and then I cried. The happiest tears I remember crying in so long.

I threw my personal laptop in my bag and sped to work early so I could watch the photocall live. When my dad got to work, I was engrossed in my personal laptop. Prince Harry and his fiance were on TV for the world to see and nothing, nothing could wipe the smile off my face. Family and friends were calling me to tell me. My grandma - 88 years old and all but deaf, miserable in her own right - called me, yelling into the phone to tell me that Prince Harry was off the market. My friends - many of whom were there when I stayed up all night for Princess Charlotte’s birth, who watched me take so much happiness from these strangers across the pond but who never cared themselves - called me as they woke to the morning’s news. I could hear the smile in many of their voices when we spoke. Their smiles had nothing to do with Prince Harry and his new fiance - they had everything to do with me. Me and my happiness. I will never, ever forget that.

It may be strange to be that emotionally invested in the lives and happiness of a stranger. I don’t pretend that it’s normal. But that Monday morning, after all of the horrible things that had happened in the previous week, and after a terrible few months, my heart lifted and my soul was healed, if only temporarily. The happiness of these two strangers - one of whom I had loved for years and years and years - was everything to me that day. Come to think of it, their happiness makes me happy, even now. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to be happy all by myself. But that day, when the engagement of Prince Harry’s engagement to Ms. Meghan Markle was announced, I felt so happy, so purely, purely happy. I needed something like that after the weeks prior, and Prince Harry delivered. I will forever be grateful for the timing of his engagement.

When the engagement interview aired, I couldn’t believe that I was watching it with my own two eyes. I shut the phones off at work, locked the door, and even got my dad to watch with me. He was sitting there, mostly watching me. He’s not interested in the royals but he knew what this meant to me. Watching Harry and Meghan together, officially, for the first time, was everything to me. Everything. My heart soared watching him shiver at the word “husband,” hearing them talk of their trip to Botswana, hearing Meghan talk about William and Catherine’s support, hearing about her having tea with the Queen and the corgis... the entire time. I’m pretty sure I was a mixture of smiley and teary and ecstatic for the entire twenty minutes. I cannot begin to put into words the feeling. It was everything to me.

Did the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle bring peace on Earth? Did it end hunger and poverty and prejudice and violence, or fix the environment? No. Not at all. But on that day, on November 27, 2017, their engagement helped me. I have always, always loved Prince Harry, but their engagement sealed the deal for me. Their happiness that day saved me, if only for a little while. I will forever be grateful for the both of them for providing me that.

The first time I saw my grandma after the engagement, I joked about the two of us going to London to watch The Royal Wedding. She was 88, mostly bedridden, and couldn’t even make it out of the nursing home to come to Thanksgiving. Yet, we joked about going together. I would pick her up at the nursing home, I’d drive us to JFK, we’d get on the plane, and then I’d bring a wheelchair and wheel her to the wedding myself. We joked about it a lot. She didn’t even have a passport and there was no way she could sit through a six hour flight, but when I thought about going to London to watch Prince Harry’s wedding, for some reason, I always thought about bringing her with me.

Less than a month after their engagement was announced, my grandma died. 2:30 AM on the morning of December 26th, just barely missing Christmas. I won’t get into the details of that day, but I was heartbroken. I had just seen her the day before for Christmas Day, and she was happy and vibrant and full of life, and then she was gone. Just like that.

A few weeks later, I made a decision. I was going to England to watch The Royal Wedding, and I was going alone. My grandma would have been so happy, so proud - once I came back safely, that is.

The wedding came and went, and my trip to England came and went. I had a fantastic time. I cried the entire time watching Prince Harry and his bride, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, pledging their lives to each other in front of the world’s audience. It was an amazing experience and I will never regret getting on that plane. Never.

When I came home, I went to go see my grandma’s grave. The grass still hadn’t grown over where they buried her completely. I sat down in the grass, and told her, “I went to England, Grandma. I saw Prince Harry get married.”

When I think back to the engagement of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle, of course I think of the heartache and pain I was experiencing in my own personal life. But, more importantly, I think of the pure, unbridled joy that was in my heart when I read the good news. Their happiness made me happy. Their happiness continues to make me happy. I will never, ever apologize for that.

Today, I’m doing much better. Can I prove that my happiness started coming back after their engagement? No.

But, in my soul, I feel like parts of myself started coming back after I got on that plane to watch their wedding. I had lost myself to depression and anxiety for a long time, for many, many years before their relationship even started.

But, when I got on that plane, I felt myself coming back. For the first time in so long, I felt parts of myself coming back. And I can attribute that feeling of wholeness, of happiness, of pure joy, all the way back to the engagement of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle on November 27, 2017.

So when I hear, “Why do you care that Prince Harry got engaged/married? What does their relationship have to do with you?” I think, nothing. It has nothing to do with me. But their happiness, their well-being, that has everything to do with me. I never thought that two strangers across the pond could bring so much joy to my life, but I am forever, forever grateful that they did.

They’re driving, Ika: “Demetres is right here, doesn’t he look nice? Look at his haircut… isn’t he so cute?”

They just finished Elijah’s games in St. Catherine’s and they’re going downtown, to an event at the Keg.

Thanks us for the support on youtube, they really, really appreciate it. She’s amazed that they get the numbers they do, because other channels do not.

Ika turns the phone around because Dem wants her to show us the views. Ika says Dem loves the views, Dem: “I like my views, that’s why I date you, baby.”

Ika wants to do more glam makeup but not too much.

Ika mentions that people accuse them of deleting the chapstick challenge, but youtube took it down. When that vid was taken down they lost almost 1k subscribers. They’re not going to delete videos because it hurts them. They’re trying to be careful with what they put out because they don’t want them reported or removed. But the subs are growing back and they’re so happy.

They do keep track of our suggestions and will do some of them. One of them they liked is reading and reacting to comments from their videos, because some are so amazing.

They can’t believe the places where people are from and how we’re from all over.

Her hair is a wig from DivasWig, but she doesn’t wear it as they show you to; Dem cut it for her.

They were at Elijah’s tournament and she was supposed to record some stuff for Elijah, but it was too intense that she didn’t get any.

Ika: “What is the yoga challenge? Demetres would fail epically at that one.”

Dem isn’t dropping her off at the door. Dem: “One day I’m going to drop you off and not come back.” He did drop her off at his work party, but she has to remind him. But after the video, he does pull up to the front of the condo and picks her up. Dem says that he’ll drop her off, they’re there. But then Ika says she doesn’t want to walk in by herself.

They went to Dem’s work party and then met up with Gary. She never got a good picture at the party.

Ika: “I’m a pain, I don’t know how he does it… actually I know how he does it.”

Someone mentions his fade is fire, and Ika gets so sweet and happy, “look at him, look at him, I love it.”

Ika says it was so funny how the kids thought them being on her IG made them famous, when she’s not even famous.

They hate parking downtown, and Dem notes that if you live downtown you don’t have to pay for parking, just an uber.

Someone wants Dem to say something in Greek, he asks her what to say. “Say Ika Wong is the Queen and she is the best.” He doesn’t know how to say Queen. Ika: “That’s the first thing you should have learned when you met me.” He says that his Greek isn’t that good but he can understand it really well; it’s tough because things don’t translate as well.

Ika notes that the windows are so tinted that people can never see if they’re in the car or not; he gets out and shows us how dark the windows are. Dem: “The cops love it.”

Dem takes credit for every subscriber they get. Ika: “You’re a whole mess.”

Ika says that they get invited to all these events, and the only ones they RSVP to are the ones with food. They got invited to one with the Raptors and Real Events, and the first thing Dem asked was if there would be food there. But Ika still wants to get invited to all of them.

Elijah has a basketball game and they RSVPd to an event at a restaurant. The basketball game came up last minute so they went to the game, but they were both bummed that they missed that food event.

Dem says there is a Christmas Market behind them, they should go. But Ika says she doesn’t like the cold. How he gets when he’s hungry, she gets when she’s cold.

Ika: “Oh’s messaging us.” Dem: “Probably work.” They try to decipher the message Dem got.

Dem: “No one likes being outside when it’s cold.” Ika: “You have this whole set of things that says otherwise. You have a snowboard, skates, you have snow things, skate things.”

Someone asks if he likes living in Toronto. Dem: “Love living in Toronto. There’s good and bad parts obviously. Hanging out in traffic for a quarter of your day sucks, the parking sucks. The rest of it is sweet.”

Ika wants Dem to do a video where he breaks down the cost of things. Ika says his brokerage is downtown, and when he drove from Thornhill to downtown the first day he calculated how much it cost him. Dem: “When you’re running a business, you need to know your expenses. You need to know your numbers.” He says when it comes to youtube he is the analytics guy, Ika is into the content more.

They talk about trolls on youtube a bit, and how they just don’t understand them. She doesn’t get jealous of other people, like youtube.

Ika says she gets jealous of dumb shit, like if Dem hugs someone a little too long, and she doesn’t dwell on it. “I’m just obsessed with Demetres and crazy, so… if he’s hugging someone a little too long… I don’t say it to him, I just feel it and then it’s gone. It’s normal things.”

Ika asks Dem if he gets jealous ever. Ika says they were at a house party and they were at different sections of the house. A girl went over talking to Dem and he put his hand on the fridge next to him, just leaning on it, but the girl was under his arm. Ika knew he wasn’t interested in that girl and he just wanted to lean, but it looked bad. So when she glanced over and he put his arm down, but she had to talk to him and tell him to be conscious of what he’s doing. She says she wasn’t threatened by her and is never threatened by other women, but it looked bad, and Dem understands why it looked bad.

Ika says that Dem has friends who are girls, and he’s just friendly with women. “I don’t like him being friendly with women. Don’t judge me… or do.” She’s used to his friends, so he doesn’t care because they’re all friends. But then he’s friendly to other people… Dem: “This is how you know you lived in Toronto for too long… you don’t want me to be friendly.” Ika says that he went in for a whole hug, and that made Ika jealous, but it was quick and she was over it. He needs to work on his hugs, “I had to regulate that, because I am not here for it.” Dem understand this too. He says none of this came from a place like that, never his intention.

Ika says that one time there was something spilled in front of the elevator and the security guy asked this woman clean it up and Dem offered. Dem says that the woman asked if he had paper towels in his place, so he got their paper towels and cleaned it up quick. Ika: “The only person I need you to be extra friendly with is me. Everyone else you can be nice and decent. Forget nice, you can be decent. You can’t pick up garbage for these people, what are you thinking? I don’t want my boyfriend being extra nice to girls. This is my truth.” They laugh about it. Dem: “Has anybody seen my water bottle?” Ika says every woman feels this way, they just may not say it. Ika says his new year’s resolution should be to be decent to people, and follow her footsteps. Ika: “I know I sound crazy, I know.”

But those are things she feels jealous of, she’s never stewing at home.

Ika says Dem is more jealous than her, but she doesn’t do things to make Dem feel jealous. He’ll get jealous if he thinks another man is interested.

Yesterday they saw a kid and his car stranded in the road and Ika told him to help him. Dem asks if it was a girl, could he help her. “If she’s a girl kid, yes. But you’re not Captain Save-a-Ho.”

Ika: “It’s not that I’m threatened, it’s how I look in public. It’s all about aesthetics.” Dem: “These people are gonna think we’re crazy as fuck.” Ika: “I’ll be crazy for everyone… all the women are feeling this.” Ika says she will say things so when it’s 10 years down the road she doesn’t freak out, and it takes time to break habits. Dem: “I’m learning. But you didn’t come with a manual.” Ika: “A manual? Every girl freels this way.” Dem says with this thinking, he wants to let her know that she should take her makeup out of his car. Ika says it’s all about delivery and his was wrong, it wasn’t nice, and if his delivery was different, she would have considered. Ika: “I feel attacked. That was yelling and aggressive.” (It was not, they’re joking about it all.) Dem: “I didn’t mean to make you feel that way… I didn’t think it would work anyways.”

Ika jokes hat she’ll leave things in his bags and cars so he can’t go that long without thinking about her. Ika: “I’m kidding, guys. I’m joking.” Dem: “Too funny, baby.”

Dem says he’s hungry. Ika and Dem say they learned about aesteics, jealousy, decency, when to be nice and decent. Dem: “We’ll end the lesson right there, we don’t want to overwhelm you.” Ika: “Don’t harbor on the jealousy, that’s not healthy. If you have a problem, let them know so you’re not dwelling on it for years.”

Dem: “Baby, I love you so much.” Ika: “Really? What do you want?” Dem: “The things in the car kinda bother me.” He asks if that delivery was better, but Ika says words like annoyed and irritated are triggers, and too much. They talk about their delivery. They laugh about it.

Dem asks if Ika wants to be dropped off or walk, she says they can walk. She then says the Christmas Market looks really pretty, and Dem says he said that. They talk about going, but they need to go to the event.

Ika: “It’s important to find someone who understands you and accepts you, and even though I sound crazy, he knows I’m not crazy. If you make a face, I’ll kill you. Dem: “You know, I love your crazy.”

Ika says Dem found this song called Beautiful Crazy and they like it, it reminds Dem of her. He says it took her like four days to listen to it, because she judged it.

The end it as it runs out of time anyways. She says she’s thankful we know she’s not crazy. “I mean the things I say but not the way I say it.” They say bye to us to go to the event.

China’s ‘hostage diplomacy’ standoff with Canada is over. But how much damage was done? (Washington Post) After more than 1,000 days spent languishing in separate Chinese prisons—largely cut off from the outside world, the sun and their families—the two Canadians detained in what was widely condemned as a brazen act of “hostage diplomacy” arrived in Canada on Saturday. Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were detained in China in December 2018 on vague espionage charges, several days after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies, in Vancouver, at the request of U.S. officials seeking her extradition on bank and wire fraud charges. The Global Times, a state-run tabloid in China, quoted an expert in an article on Saturday who said China’s release of the Canadians “unlocks the bottleneck in China-Canada ties.” But Lynette Ong, an associate professor of political science at the University of Toronto, said an immediate thaw in bilateral relations was unlikely and that sour feelings would remain. “Going forward, I don’t think Canada-China relations will be the same as they were 1,000 days ago,” she said. “It’s fundamentally at a different point. … I think China has underestimated the cost of playing this game of hostage diplomacy. Its reputation has been tarnished tremendously.” Asked what the release of the two Michaels would mean for Canada’s relationship with China, Trudeau said on Friday that there would be time for “reflections and analysis” in the coming weeks.

America's Need to Pay Its Bills Has Spawned a Political Game (NYT) For nearly two decades, lawmakers in Washington have waged an escalating display of brinkmanship over the federal government’s ability to borrow money to pay its bills. They have forced administrations of both parties to take evasive actions, pushing the nation dangerously close to economic calamity. But they have never actually tipped the United States into default. The dance is repeating this fall, but this time the dynamics are different—and the threat of default is greater than ever. Republicans in Congress have refused to help raise the nation’s debt limit, even though the need to borrow stems from the bipartisan practice of running large budget deficits. Republicans agree the United States must pay its bills, but on Monday they are expected to block a measure in the Senate that would enable the government to do so. Democrats, insistent that Republicans help pay for past decisions to boost spending and cut taxes, have so far refused to use a special process to raise the limit on their own. Observers inside and outside Washington are worried neither side will budge in time, roiling financial markets and capsizing the economy’s nascent recovery from the pandemic downturn. If the limit is not raised or suspended, officials at the Treasury Department warn, the government will soon exhaust its ability to borrow money, forcing officials to choose between missing payments on military salaries, Social Security benefits and the interest it owes to investors who have financed America’s spending spree.

As Americans spend, credit card debt is ticking back up (Reuters) Early in the pandemic, there were encouraging and surprising signs about the decline of credit card debt. Now, that trendline seems to be changing. Many Americans stayed at home at the start of COVID-19 and did not spend like they usually do. They also received several rounds of emergency cash assistance, helping to chop away at those credit-card bills, at least temporarily. Spending is ticking back up—and the results are starting to show up on our monthly statements. In fact, 42% of those with credit card debt, or 59 million Americans, say they have added to their balances since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a new study by personal finance site Bankrate.com. This trend reversal is reflected in the most recent numbers of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit found that credit-card bills rose by $17 billion in 2021’s second quarter, to $790 billion nationally.

Chile to lift state of emergency as vaccines beat back COVID infections (Reuters) Chilean authorities announced on Monday the end of a state of emergency in force since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, a sign of life returning to normal following a sharp decrease in cases in the South American nation. The state of emergency, an extraordinary administrative measure approved by Congress early in 2020, had allowed the government to impose night-time curfews and forced quarantines on hard-hit districts amid the worst of the outbreak. The government said it would also relax restrictions on movement, liberalize limits on capacity at events and public spaces and earlier this month re-opened its borders to tourists. Neighboring Argentina last week also unveiled plans to ease coronavirus pandemic restrictions, including loosening strict border controls, allowing more commercial activities and getting rid of the mandatory wearing of face masks outdoors.

Why Haitians are fleeing Chile for the U.S. border (Washington Post) Along empty streets lined with shuttered businesses, there’s little sign of the bustle that just a few a years ago earned the neighborhood of Quilicura [in Santiago, Chile] the nickname “Little Haiti.” Increasingly restrictive migration policies here, and a belief that the United States has grown more welcoming to immigrants under President Biden, have led a wave of Haitians to abandon the country they once saw as a land of opportunity. “There’s hardly anyone left here now,” said 24-year-old Wilbert Pierre, pointing across the dusty road into the Tawtaw barbershop, where he is training to be a hairdresser. “Of all the people I’ve known in my four years in Chile, more than 100 have gone to the U.S. since March alone.” Tens of thousands of Haitians came to Chile, Brazil and other South American nations after the 2010 earthquake near Port-au-Prince that killed more than 220,000 people. Now feeling growing pressure here, thousands in recent months have traveled north. Many Haitians in Chile say they have faced discrimination and racism that have made it difficult to stay in Chile. One said, “We found that although Chileans themselves are good people, the system is racist, classist and elitist.”

Panic buying leaves up to 90% of fuel pumps dry in major British cities (Reuters) Up to 90% of British fuel stations ran dry across major English cities on Monday after panic buying deepened a supply chain crisis triggered by a shortage of truckers that retailers are warning could batter the world’s fifth-largest economy. A dire post-Brexit shortage of lorry drivers emerging after the COVID-19 pandemic has sown chaos through British supply chains in everything from food to fuel, raising the spectre of disruptions and price rises in the run up to Christmas. Hauliers, gas stations and retailers warned that there were no quick fixes, however, as the shortfall of truck drivers—estimated to be around 100,000—was so acute, and because transporting fuel demands additional training and licensing. Edwin Atema, the head of research and enforcement at the Netherlands-based FNV union, told the BBC that EU drivers were unlikely to flock to Britain given the conditions on offer. “The EU workers we speak to will not go to the UK for a short-term visa to help UK out of the [mess] they created themselves,” Atema said.

What’s in a name? Phil McCann lightens the nation’s mood (Guardian) A BBC reporter called Phil McCann delighted social media users on Saturday after he was sent to cover the UK’s petrol shortage. Reporting from a BP petrol station in Stockport, which had run out of petrol, people were quick to point out that he was clearly the best man for the job, since his name sounds like “fill my can”. Phil McCann soon began trending on Twitter, with one social media user pointing out that McCann was now part of a special club—alongside the BBC weather presenter Sara Blizzard and PC Rob Banks from Avon and Somerset police.

Strong quake hits Greece’s biggest island of Crete, one person killed (Reuters) A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 shook Greece’s largest island Crete on Monday and one person was killed when a church dome collapsed, authorities said. The quake, which sent people out of their homes and public buildings and caused considerable damage, was described by a Greek seismologist, Efthymios Lekkas, as a “thunderbolt” with strong aftershocks. A man died when the dome of a church in the town of Arkalochori caved in during renovation works, a police official said. Civil protection authorities said nine people were injured in the quake, which damaged many buildings. The tremor prompted many people in Crete’s main city Heraklion to rush outdoors. Schoolchildren were told to leave their classrooms, gathering in schoolyards and town squares.

Serbia-Kosovo tensions (Foreign Policy) Serbian fighter jets flew close to the border with Kosovo on Sunday in the latest escalation of tensions between the two governments in recent days. The most recent round of unrest has been sparked by Kosovo’s ban on Serbian vehicle license plates in its territory, a move that Serbia has enforced on Kosovar plates (the vehicles are allowed, but drivers must use temporary plates when driving across the border). Offices belonging to Kosovo’s Interior Ministry were set alight in the north of the country over the weekend, while grenades were thrown into another government building. Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti has accused Serbia of inciting ethnic Serbs living in the area to carry out the attacks. “Serbia is using Kosovo citizens to provoke a serious international conflict,” Kurti said on Saturday.

India’s farmers renew protests, challenging Modi government (AP) Thousands of Indian farmers blocked traffic on major roads and railway tracks outside of the nation’s capital on Monday, marking one year of demonstrations against government-backed laws that they say will shatter their livelihoods. The farmers have renewed their protests with calls for a nationwide strike on the anniversary of the legislation’s passage. The drawn-out demonstrations have posed one of the biggest political challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who swept the polls for the second time in 2019. The government has defended the legislation, saying it is necessary to modernize agriculture and that the laws will boost production through private investment. But the farmers say the new legislation will devastate their earnings by ending guaranteed pricing and force them to sell their crops to corporations at cheaper prices. In neighboring Punjab and Haryana states—which are the country’s the two biggest agricultural producers—thousands of demonstrators also blocked highways, bringing traffic to a halt in some areas.

Concerned United Nations can only sidestep Myanmar crisis (AP) In his speech last week to open the U.N. General Assembly, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres bracketed Myanmar with Afghanistan and Ethiopia as nations where “peace and stability remain a distant dream.” He declared unwavering support for the people of the turbulent, military-ruled Southeast Asia state “in their pursuit of democracy, peace, human rights and the rule of law.” But the situation in Myanmar after the army’s seizure of power eight months ago has become an extended bloody conflict with ever-escalating violence. Yet the U.N. is unlikely to take any meaningful action against Myanmar’s new rulers because they have the support of China and Russia. China and Russia are among the top arms suppliers to Myanmar, as well as ideologically sympathetic to its ruling military. Both are members of the Security Council, and would almost certainly veto any effort by the U.N. to impose a coordinated arms embargo, or anything beyond an anodyne call for peace.

Afghanistan’s Taliban Warn Foot Soldiers: Behave, and Stop Taking Selfies (WSJ) A senior Taliban commander has warned the group’s military rank-and-file fighters to clean up their act as the group’s foot soldiers celebrate in newly captured Kabul, the Wall Street Journal reports. Shadow contracts, corruption keep the lights out in Iraq (AP) In the Baghdad suburb of Sadr City, glossy election campaign posters are plastered alongside jungles of sagging electrical wires lining the alleyway to Abu Ammar’s home. But his mind is far from Iraq’s Oct. 10 federal election. The 56-year-old retired soldier’s social welfare payments barely cover the cost of food and medicine, let alone electricity. Despite chronic outages from the national grid, Abu Ammar can’t afford a generator. When the lights go off, he has no choice but to steal power from a neighbor’s line. He doesn’t have the right political connections to get electricity otherwise, he says, a frail figure seated in a spartan living room. Love, Simon at the Box Office

Hello, Tumblr. One of my idiosyncratic fandoms is box office tracking and results. If you’d indulge me for a hot minute, I would like to make a plea for you to go see this in theaters.

The following is a long post about box office numbers, life hacks for cheap tickets, and overall gay crying.

I have seen this film twice in the past 24 Hours, and I’m still struggling to find the exact words to properly describe how it profoundly affected me.

I’m somewhere between:

Love, Simon is a paint-by-numbers rom-com released by a major Hollywood Studio (Fox 2000). Only the lead protagonist is a gay teen. As Peter Travers of Rolling Stone states in his review:

A seemingly ordinary coming-of-age tale that looms large because of its inclusive romantic embrace, Love, Simon wins you over by capturing your heart without pushing too hard for the prize. ... Yes, the plot mechanics tend to lean toward the disappointingly slick and sitcom-ish. But what redeems the film and makes it such an exuberant gift is the sincere joy Berlanti and the actors take in celebrating its protagonist's growing self awareness…. Love, Simon is a John Hughes movie for audiences who just got woke. And for all its attempts not to offend, it's a genuine groundbreaker.

I love this critique. In Love, Simon no one dies, contracts HIV/AIDS, or is the victim of a violent hate crime. The characters face complications and angst -- coming out in 2017 still is a huge undertaking with monumental stakes. Yet in the context of this film, we understand that everything will be okay. The genre makes it safe. The audience knows that the homophobic bullies will get their comeuppance. The friends will make up. The main protagonist will find love.

Love, Simon might not be perfect. It might not be everything to everyone. But it deserves its praise, and we (the LGBTQIA community) deserve to have more films like it, because everyone deserves to escape into indulgent, cotton-candy media where they can see themselves proud and happy. Love, Simon is important; just as films like Black Panther, Girls Trip, Wonder Woman, and A Wrinkle In Time are important.

And we need to financially support it:

Money Makes The World Go Run

The film business is a business first. Movies that don’t make money, don’t get sequels or start trends. So I know, I know, I’m asking for a lot, but we need to embrace capitalism for just a second.

Love, Simon opened to a $11.5M Opening Weekend (OW) from 2,402 theaters.

According to Deadline.com

Love, Simon drew 58% females, 42% males with 59% under 25. The movie over-indexed in the west, Northeast, and Midwest; slightly under-indexed in the Rockies; and under-indexed in the south and southeast. Top 20 markets that over-indexed include LA, NY, SF, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Minneapolis. Top grossing theaters came from LA, NY, SF, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, and San Antonio. Canada repped 5.6% of the weekend’s take.

Tumblr, you are driving this movie. You are going to make it a success. You have the power. We need to get this film to bring in a total domestic box office (DOM) of 50M+

Love, Simon’s budget is between 10M - 17M, plus P&A (Print & Advertising) Marketing Budget. I don’t have the P&A numbers.

There is a general rule of thumb in Hollywood called the 3X Rule. It states that a film is a box office success if it makes 3X its production budget. If a movie costs 50M to make, a 150M box office is a success. This rule is NOT exact, because it does not factor in the Print & Advertising (P&A) budget of the film, or that a movie can do terrible at the box office but still be considered a financial success because of X-factors like merch sales (I’m looking at YOU Pixar’s Cars)

Love, Simon will need 51M to pass the 3X Rule.

It’s not impossible looking at the comps:

Everything, Everything 34.1M OW / 64.6M DOM (1.89X Multiplier)

Paper Towns 32M OW / 85.5M DOM (2.67 Multiplier)

The Fault Is In Our Stars 48M OW / 124M DOM (2.58 Multiplier)

But it won’t happen if we don’t get that multiplier up to a 4X+

Multiplier = The total DOM divided by the OW. So for example:

Justice League (2017) 93.8M OW / 229M DOM = 2.44 Multiplier

The Greatest Showman (2017) 8.8M OW / 169.7M DOM = 19.04 Multiplier

We need to pull another run of legs like The Greatest Showman and keep it keep it theaters until Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018). Once IW shows up, the summer box office season kicks off, and, realistically, the jammed packed release schedule will push Love, Simon out of theaters.

We have Five Weeks - to go see this film, to tell everyone we know to go see this film, and support the cast and crew as much as we can.

The best way to do that is a positive Word of Mouth and Legs.

Word of Mouth: TALK ABOUT THIS FILM. RAVE ABOUT THIS FILM. Post on Twitter, on Facebook, on Tumblr. Get a Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB.com account and post reviews. You can NOT underestimate a good grassroots effort to get the word out.

Legs = Tied to the multiplier. It’s how much a movie makes AFTER the opening weekend. Movies like Justice League are front-loaded; meaning most ticket sales are opening weekend and in the first week. Other movies, like The Greatest Showman, have much stronger legs, where they earn a decent amount every weekend for a large total.

Weekend Drops: The percentage that a movie drops from week to week. For example, Black Panther has had amazing holds with its (as of writing this) 5 Week Run: Weekend 1 242.1M Weekend 2 111.6M (-44.7%) Weekend 3 66.3M (-40.6%) Weekend 4 40.8M (-38.4%) Weekend 5 (26.6M (-34.7%) Even though it’s making less money every week, we can see that Black Panther’s domination over the marketplace is consistent. Solid audience retention is why Black Panther is not dropping many theater screens, despite being out for over a month. This is the same reason why The Greatest Showman (which came out before Christmas) is STILL playing in 700+ theaters. TGS actually had FOUR weekends out of its seventeen where it went UP from previous weekends, and had an average of a -20% week to week drop.

It is CRITICAL to Love, Simon’s success that this weekend only drops between 20% and 30%. Some on the Box Office Forum I’m apart of are speculating that the next week will be CRITICAL to the success and failure of Love, Simon’s domestic box office run.

So, let’s go to the movies!
