030: Sanrio World Smash Ball

Alongside Space Invaders, racket sports are one of the elemental forms of games to me. Pong and Breakout remain instantly recognizable, and still have interesting variations built on their foundations. Sanrio World Smash Ball combines the two, while adding a little of the nuance back from the racket sports they abstract. All while starring Sanrio characters. I say Sanrio characters, because despite being featured on the cover and showing up as a referee, Hello Kitty isn’t playable, with only Keroppi, Tabo, Pokopon and Hangyodon available. 

Despite that major drawback, Sanrio World Smash Ball manages to carve its own competitive niche, carried on the charm of the character designs and colorful environments. The base mechanics involve rallying the ball with your left and right directional hits, attempting to break through the blocks on your opponent's side and cross into their goal. Continuing to hold the attack button while planting your feet builds meter, and when full you can unleash a powerful spin attack that hits the ball forward at high speeds, lasting long enough to hit multiple times. 

The calculation between standing to build meter and moving to defend yourself echoes the tennis’ rhythms of stamina conservation and bursts of movement, forming a satisfying baseline. The calculation gets more interesting when introducing different stage designs to the mix, which radically change the way you approach the match. Typical balanced designs give you one or more goal lines on each side, with either a small opening to sneak through or defensive line of blocks that need to be broken before scoring a goal. Some have bumpers or fans that direct the ball into other directions, and one notable stage has both players entirely encased in blocks, allowing you both enough time to charge a full meter before the competition really begins. 

On the opposite tack, one stage is a narrow corridor with no blocks, reducing the game to an exercise in keep and throwing off rally rhythms. Some of my favorites remove the separating line between players, allowing you to run into your opponent’s side and smack the ball out of their grasp, right into their goal. It’s the kinda playful, kinda chaotic design you wouldn’t see in a more traditional racket sports game. 

Powerups pile on the chaos, altering character and ball speed, giving you a full meter, or straight up removing the opponent’s blocks. The swings in momentum make it a bit more of a party game than a pure competitive one, ending up closer in spirit to something like Bomberman than Windjammers. It doesn’t stop it from being competitively exciting, and I’ve even brought it with me to my local fighting game meetups and had it be a hit. 

Sanrio World Smash Ball was only released in Japan, but received an English translation courtesy of Suicidal Translations, although I personally prefer the Tournament Edition Hack by Omnigamer. Tournament Edition provides an English translation, makes more stages and characters available, and slightly rebalances the game by turning all power ups into a full meter bonus. It keeps the competition a little more consistent, and avoids the one sided advantages you can get by losing all of your defensive blocks, while keeping the mad scramble for the powerups. 

Sanrio World Smash Ball is charming and easy to introduce people to, with just enough nuance and variety to keep it fresh round to round. Simply put, it’s one of my favorite titles on the Super Famicom. Even if it doesn’t let you play as Hello Kitty.

His Majesty - Larian Studios - 2023 - Sphynx cat:

-His Majesty is a pampered little kitty who lives in an inn in the middle of a cursed land he doesn’t care about. If you talk to him with speak with animals on he will say “hiss I say! Hiss!” And tell you to get out of his territory. You can tell him you’re here to admire his beauty and he will let you look at him and tell him he’s a beautiful cat. When the game first came out he was a hairless cat, which was apparently a mistake when making the game and he was given the appearance of another cat in the game instead of his own, so the game developers “fixed” it in a patch and made him furry. This sparked outrage in the fan community and everyone was demanding that they “Shave His Majesty”. A few days later they released a hotfix to shave his majesty and return him to his glorious furless self.

Welcome one and all, to the most ambitious tournament probably so far (that is to say, I chose way too many characters but in my defense I had found a blank template for a smash bros character roster thing and wanted to fill the whole thing up, even if I had to turn to the dark side to do so for one or two picks): The 2023 Himboff!

Round 1 Part 1 will begin on Friday, hopefully giving everyone enough time to prepare themselves for battle (I describe this as if it's a war and not a tumblr pollnament-).

EDIT: Yes I am being told that I may have included characters who may not fit the himbo criteria perfectly but in my defense i am not in every fandom and my research consisted of furious googling so if google lied to me then blame that

[REDACTED] - CAPCOM - 2010 - Magic black cat:

-He is DEAD and has GHOST POWERS. He can TIME TRAVEL. He has a LOVING CAT DAD as his OWNER and the only family they have left is EACH OTHER. I would go into detail but that would involve spoiling the best mystery game ever written. You should play Ghost Trick. This stupid cat has not left my brain in months. He's haunting me. Which is fitting because he is a ghost. Did I mention he's a ghost cat what is cooler than a ghost cat.

-most special little guy in the world. hes HUGE spoilers for the game btw but um. yea <3

-Because [REDACTED] is the true Schroeder’s cat, he is both dead and alive at the same time and has really cool ghost powers. Also, he can’t read!

-If you haven’t played Ghost Trick, I tragically cannot tell you the spoilers, but this cat is sweet and determined and got a sad man through some rough times.

Judge - Unproductive Fun Time - 2008 - White cat:

-Idk his teeth fucked up tho “I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the voice that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know… have you seen my dear brother?”

-adding some extra propaganda for the judge [non-spoiler]

-He speaks like you gave someone thesaurus for the first time ("Nevertheless, I will introduce myself. I am the Judge, and I am aching to know your name, dear elusory interlocator."

-in some parts of the game it can be read as him making fun of the batter ("Oh, so you can read?" - in response to the batter reading aloud the ad for cat food he was admiring)

-his real name is Pablo

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE ENTIRE GAME-- BE WARNED

-His only family is his brother, who he watched as a bird came out of his mouth and revealed his brother was long dead and the bird was puppeteering his corpse around. While you fight the bird the only thing he can say is calling out his brothers name.

-after you kill the bird he stays at the rooftop where it happened and calls out his brothers name (with real sad cat meows) and says the meowing at his lungs fullest line in the original post. he isnt seen again until the very end of the game

-At the end of the game he reappears to berate you (the player) for helping the batter kill eveyone else in the world, and you can choose to side with him and kill the batter. All his special attacks are named after neck, spine, and brain injurys (Anyurysm rupture, Staggering sclerosis, ect)

-with your help he can easily kill the batter with three of his special attacks.

-after you kill the batter he is seen roaming the now empty world, seeming being one of three(?) people left in existance

-ALSO The Judge was most likely the inspiration for SANS HIMSELF,

since undertale is highly inspired by OFF and both characters have a part in the game where they judge the players actions, and weigh their morality.
