Last night I took Topaz to club. We did this sequencing work for five minutes, then the rest of the night I worked on her chilling out. We did some good sitting on the raised bed near the field until the other dogs started running, then she had a freak out. So I moved us very far away and waited for her to offer to get on the raised bed again. Then I worked on 300 peck. We got up to 21 the first try, then she had another freak out when she heard someone's tunnel cue. So I took her away to walk around a bit, then came back.

When she got on the raised bed again, we got up to a 29 count before she jumped off – but no freak out. We then did a lap of the field and she didn't bark at anyone. Then we came back to stand near some other trainers and dogs and she only made some mild frustration sounds, which was because she wanted to get near them to be friendly rather than to be antagonistic. So that was actually nice to see.

I'm trying really hard to frame this more optimistically in my brain. That things can improve if I work at it. But I've had another week of feeling utterly terrible after she was aggressive with my grandfather, starting to worry that maybe I'll never be able to have visitors over and what if in future she bites a judge? Some things we've made good progress in and others we just plateau or go backwards and I have no idea how to move forward again.

Next week I have an appointment with a behaviour vet. I would like to get her on some medication to trial it. If I was to anthropomorphise her behaviour, I would describe her as paranoid. I think that maybe a low dose behaviour medication might be able to bring her baseline down so she's not on edge all the time when around other people and dogs. I can see that she wants to be social and play and sniff and relax, but she doesn't seem able to in many situations. We've only in the last two months managed to see consistent calmness at home.

I'm trying for this dog. I love her. I still feel crippling shame about her. I haven't told her breeder about any of this yet because frankly I don't know how. I don't know how to talk about it without it verging into either blame or shame, neither of which I want. The mean selfish part of me just feels angry that all I want is a dog to do agility with and every dog I get is wrong for it in some way. I don't know why things look effortless for so many others and I feel like I have to fight tooth and nail to just feel like things are OK. But that's not helpful to anyone, so I try to let it go.

The house is quiet.

In Topaz's bedroom, five pokemon are curled up on a bed together, and four of them are asleep.

In the living room, two humans and a vulpix lay on the couch. Both Venus and Topaz, in their switched forms, have sprawled across Pyrite. In her sleep Venus has reached out a hand towards her brother's warmth. Eruption rests on the floor nearby, the coffee table pushed against the wall to accommodate the large Iron. A phone and an open laptop have been left on the side table. Eruption is awake, but his eyes are closed.

Venus stirs. Silently, unnoticed by anyone, blue light flashes around her and her trainer.

Two humans and a vulpix lay on the couch.

Sleepily, Venus blinks her eyes open. She stares for a moment at her orange paws. Then, she snaps fully awake with a startled yip. She scrambles upright, and begins barking and pawing at Topaz.

The first thing Topaz does upon waking up is to fall off the couch.

The video starts at the barn that Ares had chosen to hole himself up in. Ryu can be seen approaching the barn, carrying some food and some of the colognes that Topaz sent them. Their Rotomphone is filming for them.

"Okay so... I think Ares might've calmed down enough from Aster's shenanigans. But just in case..."

The Rotomphone's focus goes towards Ryu's left side; Kain is walking alongside their trainer.

"I don't want Ares to be intimidated by Kain, but I also don't really wanna get attacked?? I do have Ares' Pokeball on me just in case though."

The Rotomphone's focus goes back to the barn doors, which are now opened up. Ares can be seen shuffling around in the back, and a growl is heard from the Alopeklash.

"Heeeyy Ares, I brought you a snack."

Another growl, and Ares comes more into view, glaring suspiciously at the others. Ryu sets down the food. It's a local specialty; Pokemon-safe kreatopita.

"I'm not really sure what flavors you prefer, so I picked out something meaty for you."

Ryu can be seen backing up a bit after setting down the plate, wanting to give the shadow Pokemon space while he ate. Ares let out another growl, flexing his claws, but doesn't attack.

Introducing Topaz (she/they), the current Virbank City gym leader! They specialise in psychic types, with Sigilyph as their ace. They’re into a lot of ✨new age✨ concepts like astrology and healing crystals, as well as inheriting Melli’s flair for the dramatic. Thanks to their parents, they’re also very knowledgeable about the history of Sinnoh/Hisui and take a great interest in the region’s myths and legendary Pokémon. Topaz is also an old friend of Ivan and Jasper’s, and the three of them travelled together as rookie trainers!

(Originally Topaz was part of the same alternate timeline as these guys, but I got so attached that I couldn’t resist making this family canon to the main verse so here she is 👀 I am planning on writing a Big Post or two at some point explaining more about how PLA fits into my timeline so I will likely discuss more about her parents then!)
