Tales From The FRONTLOG: Traumatarium
How likely am I to recommend this?: 3/10 How much do I like it?: 6/10
Tumblr media
I intended to put this on my Switch backlog. … But Traumatarium cut directly to the front of the line.
Well… you know what they say about good intentions 🔥🔥🔥. Whoops! It went on sale from $2.99 to $2.54, so… you know. Gotta jump on that vicious price cut. (Click here for the link to the Nintendo page for the game!)
How could I not pick this up when in game I am a hulking mountain of a man with a horned helmet and the trailer played wicked heavy metal music at me? And it was $2.50? It’s called Traumatarium for god’s sake! The name alone hooked me instantly. Sign me the fuck up. And that isn’t sarcasm. I have a great love for ridiculous fantasy like this.
I should be playing stuff that gets the blog attention but also I don’t WANT to play that stuff right now! So… ONWARD.
Switch is usually the backlog I actually work on over my other consoles and my PC. It’s also the shortest of the bunch. I have a clear and unapologetic favoritism for my Switch.
I’d say Traumatarium reminds me of Dragon’s Lair. If Dragon’s Lair was a choose your own adventure book instead of the famous: “You clicked wrong, goodbye idiot” gameplay. Meaning you are running through a sequence of events with occasional button presses over a more standard gameplay experience.
You get a town hub with a few shops, and then a few dungeons to go through. The dungeons are “randomly generated”. Which is a very generous phrase. There are only so many rooms per dungeon type for the game to pick from. It only rearranges the order of the rooms. And since the rooms are all functionally the exact same in mechanics the order doesn’t matter. At all. In any kind of way. You just get a different picture per room. This isn’t a bad thing per se. I’m just pointing that out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In most rooms in a dungeon you have two options. Explore or leave. Any other options are just variances of this mechanic.
Exploring can net rewards and money. Leaving can possibly spare you damage, but 9 times out of 10 leaving is the worse option. You’ll miss your opportunity to get free healing items (which they are very generous with) and you won’t progress far into the game otherwise.
After all. If you interact with nothing you aren’t really playing the game are you?! 🤣
Saving costs gold. (Which you make by defeating bosses and monsters). So you have to manage your money between equipment, saving/full healing, and healing items. Also there’s a hunger mechanic. Eh. I feel nothing positive or negative about it. It’s just kind’ve there to manage. It’s not annoying by any stretch.
There is no experience points or leveling. You grind money to get weapon and armor upgrades. That is the only way to increase power.
This game is not hard. At all. It’s filler. Which isn’t a bad thing. It’s a game where you’re just kind’ve there to get through quickly and for the experience. I like how the game has various color options for not only accessibility, but just to better make it to your particular taste. The little stuff matters.
The sprite work is nice. I think I like it so much because it’s so… hokey. I like over the top corny fantasy things. 🤷‍♀️ The higher the fantasy, the better.
“Okay it sounds like you like it. But my dude you rated it a 3 for recommending it to other people. Most people wouldn’t consider that good.”:
A fair point. But let me explain: It’s basically a phone game. I’ve played longer winded Gameboy titles before. That’s not a dink against it, but it’s good to know what you’re working with. I’m personally not apt to recommend a title like this because I have other games I would recommend far ahead of this one. It doesn’t change that I like it though.
Gaming reception/journalism, and by extension its attitude, kinda has this take or leave it policy. Which isn’t my favorite. I don’t care much for black and white.
I also believe in realism. I can tell the difference between me liking a game and the likelihood of someone else liking that game. Y’all I play serious games but I also pre-ordered Fashion Dreamer for next month. I will look you in the eye and give a horse game a 9/10. And that’s a flaw in a flat rating system. In reality it should be more like a square. It’s far less misleading to go 9/10 horse game but it’s a horse game so you probably don’t want to play it.
One last side thing about the game: When you open the game you start in a little office. The game, box, manual, and “definitely not a gameboy” are all sitting on top of the desk. You have to put the game inside the gameboy to start playing. That’s just cute. I’ve seen other games do it but I can’t help but like it almost every time.
Tumblr media
They have another game you can buy (and maybe swap out with Traumatarium in game?) called 2021: Moon Escape.
I’m not quite ready to tackle this game or pick it up yet. Though I’m adding it to my wishlist to consider playing later. I’m already playing a Moon themed game and my review on that is in my drafts being worked on.

Adding to The Backlog: Christmas Sale Pickups.
This is the time of year I pick up the most titles (which I then work on for the rest of the year.). And why not? Everything is on sale! I actually budget for this time of year.
It’s “Tales From The Backlog” not “We buy nothing until I finish the backlog”. The backlog will never be finished.
So let’s go over what I got! Links for everything will provided. As I find people are more likely to engage if the work was already done for them. Me included. This is not necessarily a suggestion list. If you want to see if any of these games are actually any good follow my blog. But I do think it’s interesting to show people what kind of gamer you are, the games you’re attracted to, their difficulty level.
A gamer’s library says a lot about a gamer, in my opinion.
For Playstation 5:
Goodbye Volcano High:
youtube
TLDR: I put this one first because if you don’t see any of the other games on my pickup list, I AT LEAST want you to consider this one. This was the only Playstation title I picked up on sale (It is also on Steam). This is pre(historic)-apocalyptic coming of age visual novel with killer animation and music. I’m surprised I don’t see folks talk about this one more. It’s maybe the most stunning looking visual novel to come out this year. (At least at a glance)
Which is a hefty claim considering titles like Jack Jeanne and Virche Evermore: Error Salvation dropped this year. I can’t WAIT to play this one.
For Nintendo Switch:
Roots of Pacha:
youtube
I came back around to this one. It looks like Stardew Valley but with cavemen. You don’t see cavemen touched on a lot anymore so it seems different and interesting.
Wylde Flowers:
youtube
This is one see that keeps popping up in conversations and videos as a great cozy game. It’s supposed to be really good. I’m honest enough to admit that it being on the Apple app store as well as Switch makes me REALLY skeptical. But I’ve seen enough gameplay where I’m willing to take a chance.
Coromon:
youtube
I enjoy Pokemon-like titles. I don’t think we get enough of them. I love Pokemon. And you’ll be seeing my update on how I feel about Scarlet/Violet’s last piece of DLC the Indigo Disc here pretty soon.
However Pokemon is so domineering on the market that a lot of these smaller collector games get unnoticed. This seems to be a very unapologetic Pokemon-clone much like Monster Crown. Which is fine by me.
Nexomon + Nexomon: Extinction bundle:
youtube
Another very obvious Pokemon clone. But it’s obviously prettier than its Coromon counterpart. (Kinda wish the names were more unique.) I have nothing new to say here.
Monster Sanctuary:
youtube
Pokemon… but it’s a Metroidvania. $3.99. I swear the theme wasn’t intentional they just all popped up on sale at decent prices.
2021 Moon Escape:
youtube
This is from the same people who did Traumatarium. I did a review on that one a few months back. It’s on sale for $2.49. And this ISN’T my cheapest pickup for this year. The gameplay reminds me of Zelda or Star Tropics. But I don’t know much about it other than what the trailer already shows us. But also it was $2.49. It’s okay with me if it’s just okay. Not all games have to be 10/10.
Mythic Ocean:
youtube
I have a soft spot for ocean games. Even the more spooky ones like Subnautica or Dredge still have this serene element to them. Mythic Ocean is no different. You apparently help a pantheon of gods find themselves. Which in turn those choices shape the world around you. Sounds simple, short, and cute. It looked a bit explorable too? We’ll see. I’m unsure about that part. It’s on sale for $1.99. And this was my cheapest pickup this season.
For Steam:
Sonic Forces: Overclocked (Steam version REQUIRED for this)
I have, in no uncertain terms. Have played this game. I 100%ed it even. I like the game. Played better but I still like it.
HOWEVER. I haven’t played Sonic Forces Overclocked. Which requires the PC version of Sonic Forces!
This is a FAN MADE incredible mod that blows the original game out of the water apparently. This is, perhaps, my most high priority game purchase of the YEAR. And it’s only $10 to buy Forces right now. This is literally a no brainer.
youtube
Slay The Princess:
youtube
I felt like videos on this one sprung up seemingly overnight on Youtube. I watched someone play the demo and it was an awesome looking game. A horror visual novel about saving a princess is a neat little premise. This one was barely on sale, but I see myself playing this one soon because of the hype. The full voice acting is great.
Magical Diary: Wolf Hall
Tumblr media
The original visual novel Magical Diary: Horse Hall was a game a friend showed me back in high school. Pretty innocent and cute. When this dropped in 2020 I was surprised the game got a sequel at all. The thing I remember most about Horse Hall was that there was a route where you could date Professor Snape. That wasn’t his name but… it might as well have been.

Random: A gamer’s diary entry for October 2023!
While I finish writing, and playing, my next backlog games I’m excited to add to the wishlist ‘Little Goody Two Shoes’. Which looks like it’s going to be getting a physical release. (Which I won’t be picking this game up until the physical drops. I already know I’ll like it.)
One of my favorite YouTube channels called Nostalook worked on the trailer (and I think the in game cutscenes as well) and their work is stunning as usual. It really captures the 90s anime look. It deeply reminds me of Princess Maker.
youtube
Also it’s a shoujo yuri. Female romancable characters only! (And they’re all so ✨ PRETTY ✨) I can’t explain how HAPPY that makes me. I just hope it stays in an innocent direction.
You know, because in majority yuri isn’t made for women. 😐
I get it, but at the same time I feel locked out of the content because it’s so obviously not for me. But that’s a complaint for a different post on a different day! Makes me wonder if men feel the same way about yaoi.
I was very bad this month. There were a lot of physical sales. And then my preorders for new games rolled in. I always prioritize my physical games over my… “digital” games, so those will be in the front of my backlog!
Let’s take a look at what I picked up! (I paid full price for nothing on this list. I am wickedly good at finding deals and coupons. Which upon review I will attempt to pass onto you!):
Traumatarium
Dredge
Omori
FaeFarm
Inescapable
Sonic Superstars
Coffee Talk 2
Moon A Remix RPG
I’m already playing a few of these games, so my reviews on those should be out next week!
I decided to skip this month’s two biggest releases altogether until about next year. I want the GOTY Spider-Man 2 when it comes with all of the DLC for $20. The first one was amazing. I’m just willing to wait on it. Which is a similar story for Mario Wonder. I mostly use the fall season to get all the titles I’ve been wanting for a freaking sick deal. Why should I have to pay full price?
The older I get, the more I feel like I appreciate weird games and indie titles more anyway. I feel like those other projects have the freedom to take more aesthetic risks than the big companies. Not because of the creatives inside (They tend to always have good ideas), but the stockholders. 🙄
I adore some of these triple A titles to my core, but I crave to see more new things too. Different things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dave The Diver is a good example. That seems rad. I like ocean games. I like that we get more of them now. I’m gonna wait and see if that one gets a physical as well. You collect fish to go back to your restaurant to make sushi? Sign me up!
Don’t even get me started on Limited Run’s releases this month.
While ‘Persona 4’ and ‘This Way Madness Lies’ are no brainers for me; I was EXTREMELY on the fence about ‘Persona 3 Portable’. (I did pick it up reluctantly)
The remake of Persona 3 will be upon us soon and I don’t know if I’ll want to play P3P again. The problem lies in the fact that most of these games become much more expensive later. Buying it on “launch” from Limited Run usually IS the cheaper option.
That shit annoys me so bad. I don’t like picking up games for value. But because the game might be value I have to be ahead of the scalpers and pay for it at its maybe cheapest.
Tumblr media
I collect games because I like ‘em. I want to play them and love them. I want to use my stuff. I don’t give a fuck about the “value”. I respect the folks that do care about that stuff but I plain just don’t.
But that’s also just kinda life. Not much can be done about other people. You can only truly control yourself. 🙄
Overall October has been an exceptionally excellent month for gaming! We’ve had so much good stuff come out this fall season. I’m excited for next month as well! Super Mario RPG will be making its re-debut and I can’t wait to talk about that one!
