Corona Case Analysis
Heineken positioned itself to sell “quality” beer with their tagline being “Just being the best is enough”. While this campaign was successful in bringing out the said message, it came across as arrogant not just to other brewers, but also customers. This underlying message along with its premium price point made Heineken seem like a premium product catered to high socio-economic classes in the U.S. Foley later admitted that Heineken should haveve been “more responsive to its distributors, friendlier to its consumers and respectful of its fellow brewers”.
While Heineken focused on the product at hand, beer, Corona focused on the experience of consuming it. Their campaign positioned its beer as a way of enjoying oneself, with its light-hearted tagline, “Fun, Sun, Beach”. This was reiterated through the authentic, Mexican feel of the beer and the nature of advertisements more generally. Through its marketing campaign, Corona essentially made Mexico changeable with beaches and beer. Their advertisements did not focus on people, but rather on simple shots on the beach in Mexico. Through this, Corona was able to radiate an idea of escapism to its consumers. The absence of people in the advertisements allowed them to spread their net wide such that despite its premium price point in the US market, Corona did not limit its consumers to high echelons of society.
As Foley said “People dont drink beer, they drink marketing”. When thinking of designing a campaign, it is difficult to reach out to the target customers without restricting your addressable market. Corona’s ability to cater to an open-ended audience allowed for it to grow and capture greater market share in the US and beyond.
This case reminds me of Vijay Mallya’s positioning of his beer brand Kingfisher. Know as the “King of Good Times”, Vijay Mallya positioned Kingfisher to sell as a lifestyle rather than a product. Similar to Corona, Kingfisher’s positioning was that of as aspirational luxurious lifestyle, not as a lifestyle for luxurious consumers. By spreading their net wide enough, UB Group’s Kingfisher Beer biz has 50% market share in India and is available in 52 countries.

Through this partnership, HEINEKEN USA will be the exclusive marketer of the entire beer category at the arena, including alcohol-free beer, cider and hard seltzer. As a founding partner of UBS Arena, exclusive beer of the four-time Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders and an official partner of the UBS Arena Concert Series, this is one of HEINEKEN USA's most exciting sports and entertainment partnerships to date.
