So I just got the new UCD Choral Scholars album, perpetual twilight, and Oh My Fuck all of these songs are stunning but I want to give special props to:
Bó na Leathadhairce, which I cannot pronounce for the life of me
Dúlamán, because it's just a solid bop
And
Body of the Moon, because it's so calming and Abby Molloy's voice is a treasure to mankind
Anyways, it's on spotify, google play, and itunes so go listen to these songs and improve your life by like a billion percent

Here's a haunting Gaelic lament for Bonnie Prince Charlie by the UCD Choral Scholars. (I've been listening to more songs in Gaelic recently and I think this is my new favorite.)

48: What's your favorite love song?
“Song? Erm... Hm. There’s a few that my sister sings on the regular- old Shroud folk songs and the like, I tend to be more fond of them than some of the stuff I grew up with. Mostly because the stuff I grew up with left a poor taste in my mouth and just reminds me of the shite way my sire ruled his roost, but uh-...”“My Gallant Hero> comes to mind, Madje has been practising that, lately, as does Red Is The Rose, which is sung in Eorzean- and there’s a few bangers that Crescent plays on the regular that for the life of me I can’t recall who it is on the roll, but- the ones I think are called ‘Treasure’ and ‘Stay’, maybe? They’re grand, very different newfangled music made with Allagan and Garlean stuff being reclaimed and horribly misused for entertainment- it’s great.”
“I feel like I’m missing one, but those are the ones with their claws dug into my skull of late!”

Music shuffle tag
You can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. Put your favorite playlist on shuffle and list the first ten songs then tag ten people! No skipping!
Tagged by @built-for-longing (Thank you!)
1. Warrior - Beth Crowley
2. Never Enough - Benji Pasek, Justin Paul, Paula Kiete, Chris Snelling
3. How Will I Know - Im Tae Kyung
4. Tir Na nÓg - Celtic Woman, Oonagh (Ways you know that I didn’t skip: No self-respecting Celticist would admit to liking THIS SONG IN PARTICULAR otherwise.)
5. Black Wings - Cyrha
6. The Chosen: Main Theme from Revelation - Neal Acree
7. I Believe - The Book of Mormon (ANOTHER way you know this was randomly selected: I can almost guarantee that I added this when I was....younger. Much younger.)
8. The Hero Inside of Me - Andrew Stein
9. Dúlamán - The Choral Scholars of UCD (....yes. Really. I AM that predictable. “Celticists don’t all go for trad stuff-” I say, as a dozen trad songs fall out of my backpack)
10. Hollywood Ending - Anna and the Apocalypse
Tagging (no pressure!): @noscorpsaladerive, @onlythelonelysurvive, @fallenidol-453, @marzipanandminutiae, @violetcancerian, @blood-milkmaid, @drawn-and-talk-of-peace, @a-promise-that-i-keep, @madtumbleson, @kristiemewisstan

My Unasked-For Opinions on Assorted Trad Music
Mo Ghile Mear isn’t a fun party song, it’s about the pain of separation, especially in the context of the Jacobite Era (and the compiler’s own death)(And the best rendition is the one done by the UCD choral scholars) Like, there can be a hopeful, upbeat song to it, but...kept in the context of the time and that this is a LAMENT. (Also ngl I like combing through it for all of the references to figures from the medieval lit: Lugh, Conall Cernach, Cú Roí, Aengus Óg, etc.)
Likewise with Siúil a Rún -- Really, just because a song’s Irish =/= it’s fun party music. Though, honestly, with this one, I’ve noticed less “party” and more “sedately singing” and NO. This is a song about LOSS and LONGING and if you don’t sound at least a little bit like your heart’s in your throat when you’re singing, what’s the point?
Meanwhile, if you don’t sound at least a little pissed when singing “Óró sé do bheatha abhaile”, what’s the point? (Also evidence that the Jacobite Rebellion produced some Bangers. Albeit mostly very depressing bangers for obvious reasons.)
Star of the County Down is not a dirge, it doesn’t need to be toned down and sedate. Come on, this is ONE TIME when you can go wild and have fun!
Mrs. Mcgrath is a hard song to pull off because most versions either play up the “Foddle diddle da”s and not enough about the devastating effects of war, while some add such a hard edge to it that it’s basically unrecognizable. The best, though, are the ones that include the lyrics “By herr’ns I’ll make them rue the time/they swept the legs of a child of mine”.
That being said, possibly the best rendition I found is on the Irish Trad Music Archive, where it was recontextualized to be about the importance of a good bra. (”Biddy McGrath”.)
“Limerick, You’re a Lady” isn’t a trad song, but I’m bringing it in here to say that “The Limerick Rake” is better. (Also it’s another song where the faster, the better, because it becomes really fun when it’s just the singer listing through all the girls at a Gilbert and Sullivan pace.)
I’d have opinions on “The Rocky Road to Dublin” except it’s about Dublin and therefore dead to me.

And I will be some good man's wife
If there I'll settle down
And find myself a better life
If I get to Sydney town
Sail, sail, sail me away
Sail to Australia

How to reach student wellbeing with music
Student life is not always easy to manage, especially because of stress-related problems. It’s time to remember the benefits of music! In fact, studies suggest that there are beneficial effects on health to have activities in our life. However there are many other activities that lead to relaxation. So what is the particularity of music?
Tumblr media
Listening to music reduces anxiety and stress
An experiment was conducted by Japanese researchers on laboratory mice to prove the physiological effects of music. These mice had high blood pressure, and they were made to listen to Mozart's Symphony No.7 in D major, K.45. They have proven that it activates the production of dopamine and reduces blood pressure. During moments of stress, listening to music has a positive physiological effect, it’s a direct reaction of the body (Sutoo, D. & Akiyama, K. 2004). Especially during exams, the reduction of stress allows the increase of productivity.
Listening to music breeds dopamine release. Let's look at the scientific aspect: dopamine manages the motivation and reward systems, it’s within the limbic system that we find the euphoric actions. (Moraes, Rabelo, Pinto, Pires, Wanner, Szawka and Soares, 2018). Listen to music so effects similar to drugs or chocolate, but without the negative consequences on your physique. It also increases the level of cortisone (stress hormone) and increases the amount of serotonin, which reduces the rate of anxiety, especially during exams.
Music develops cognitive skills like memory and attention
People practicing music have more gray matter in the frontal cortex, whereas this hosts important working memory processes (Sluming, Brooks, Hhoward, Downes and Roberts, 2007).
It's never too late to start learning an instrument in your spare time, but you don’t necessarily need an instrument: you can sing, even if it's wrong! This will help you reduce your stress! (Vajpayee, 2018)
It can influence your mood and increase productivity
Of course as long as you don’t listen to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings that reminds us of the end of the movie Elephant Man, listening to music with dopamine release can put us in a good mood (Newstex, 2015). It sounds obvious, but it's not a reflex that we can have whenever we are nervous. Listening to ambient, or swinging music can help you increase your productivity. Choose your music according to your activity: soft to relax if you are agitated or disturbed, catchy to give you motivation.
  Improve your sleep
With soft music, research has shown that it eases sleep and it decreases the number of awakenings during the night. Sleeping time is reduced as sleep time increases. As a result, when the quality of sleep increases, it makes us more efficient and productive. On the other hand, poor sleep can lead to problems such as depressed mood. (Clements-Cortes, 2015).
Allows you to be more creative
Music can stimulate thoughts, images, feelings, it can evoke memories and associations. When you're running out of ideas in a time when you have to create an original project, take the time to lie down, and let yourself travel.
To conclude
The positive effects of music therapy can not be ignored. When you wake up, take the time to sit down, listen to relaxing music for 10 minutes and don’t think about anything. This can be a positive way to start a good day.
