had a really interesting convo yesterday about ethics and whether intent or results matters (eg if you tried to make an ethical purchasing choice but the business was actually exploitative as hell, does that "count") and very much came to the conclusion that sure, if you're concerned with your personal immortal soul, as a christian might be, then intention counts. but if what you're focused on is your impact on the world, then intention means nothing if the actions have negative results, right? (that doesn't mean you're to blame for them! you didn't know! but you also don't get "ethics points" for trying, you know?)

and this also got me thinking about the whole christian idea that sinful thoughts are as bad as sinful actions because. they're just not imo. maybe for the sake of your Immortal Soul they are points against you, if that's your jam. but in terms of putting good into the world, in terms of your impact on other people, the ONLY thing that matters is what you choose to do with those thoughts. there is no way that "was kind to someone who was pissing me off, for the sake of community harmony" or "helped an acquaintance with a task even though I felt resentful about the time spent doing that" is a Bad Thing for the world

and it made me wonder how much purity culture and thought policing is rooted in (mostly evangelical) cultural christianity and this idea that ethical choices are an individual thing because what matters is the impact of them on YOUR soul and not, you know, things we do because of what we owe the world around us / because of love for others / because a world where people are trying to put good into it is a hell of a lot nicer to live in than one where people are only worried about themselves

i grew up evangelical but like. fairly mild evangelical and even though there wasn't a big focus on hell and stuff, i definitely fixated on imperfect thoughts and behaviours that were putting absolutely no harm into the world, rather than focusing on what i could do to put good into it, and that individualistic vs outward-focused approach to morality has been something i've grappled with a lot as an adult. but i never really thought about it as simply as this and really that's what it boils down to. are you making the ethical choice because you're trying to put good in the world, or because it would make you a "good person" to do so? because the answer to that 100% defines whether it's the thought or the result that counts

#also i feel like Sinful Thoughts Are As Bad As Sinful Actions...#as well as being bullshit...#is just like a one way trip to moral ocd and a whole lot of guilt spirals #and i just don't think it's useful! you can't necessarily choose your thoughts!#you can however choose your actions because Good is something you do not something you are #ethics #i do think The Good Place did more to make me interrogate my evangelical upbringing and ethical assumptions than anything else #but also this idea of putting good into the world... idk. it's kind of encouraging AND scary #i don't think I'm naturally a very good person but i can choose to do good #i can be bitter and jealous and resentful and still help people and make their lives a little easier #and my feelings are not actually impacting on the world whereas my actions are #at the same time in a society built on exploitation and corporate greeed #it's hard not to be conscious of the harm my actions are doing without me trying #i didn't necessarily make an unethical choice but all of my choices cause harm to someone somewhere #living in the west and the global north and whatever you become very conscious of that

just got home from my 6 hour shift at work, which i went to directly after school, which i went to as soon as i woke up. now it’s time to eat a dead sloppy joe and write about Roth IRAs until sunrise. i am out of my prescription medication because my school counts absences from medical appointments against you and i will fail 12th grade if i go to the doctor anytime soon. these things exhaust me every day, but i remind myself i should be grateful to have these things to be exhausted by. it is a privilege to have a job and a body that is able to stand for long periods, a privilege to have food readily available to me, a privilege to have an education, to have wifi access to do my homework, to have a roof to do it under, to have a doctors office to go to, and access to my prescription. and it is a privilege to be able to forget, and to take these things for granted. There are people in palestine who have not had homes for months, who do not have food, whose schools have been bludgeoned by israel’s bombs, and whose entire families have been lost under the debris. israel is not allowing donations of food, medicine, clothing, or otherwise into gaza. they have bombed and destroyed many of palestine’s oldest buildings and cultural landmarks, and they do not stop. nothing goes in or comes out of palestine, and i am a resident of the US, a country who is supporting israel’s horrific genocide on the palestinian people. i repost everything i can, and donate what i can afford, and i pray it reaches palestine. i pray it isn’t futile, and i learn their history, and i think of the palestinian journalists who risk their lives every day to keep their history alive. i will write everything i learn in my journal so that, in the event that the journalists’ online presence is erased, i will have a written record of what they told the world. i cannot keep them alive, but i can keep their history alive. AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE KEEPING THEIR HISTORY ALIVE. amplify palestinian journalists and voices, their stories, and learn their history. learn their culture, their language, their poetry, their food, and everything else you can find. AND AS SOMEONE WHO IS GUILTY, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE should EVER FORGET.

BY FORGETTING THEIR STRUGGLES, OR NEGLECTING TO LEARN THEIR CULTURE, WE ARE KILLING THEM TOO. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE THE BLOOD DOESN’T MEAN THEY AREN’T BLEEDING. TO KEEP ALIVE THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED IS THE VERY LEAST WE CAN DO.

From the river to the sea, palestine will be free.

tbh in brazil we don't really use north south east west as directions, dare i say even knowing which is which is uncommon 😭 i literally only learned them when i was doing an aviation course and didn't really use it afterwards

#now i use it in architecture as its mandatory for floor plans to have it as the solar incidence affects the building etc etc #but directions...? honey just go straight ahead then left then right #are gringos using it bc their streets are actually lined up the same as north south east west or are they using it instead of #ahead down right left...?

Hello! It’s three days until a solar eclipse. Would Agua Caliente Pat and Achilles have plans?

The eclipse path of totality is nowhere near California, and I doubt they'd have much interest in traveling to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, or western New York in early April (or ever). West Coast people can be so attached to their precious coast.

However, the national park service does show which parks will be in the path of totality, and I guess I could see Patroclus using this as an excuse to visit one he hasn't seen before. The the Ozark riverway would be a good one, except it's not open yet. And if they did visit, it would be all mud. And ugly. So... scratch that. Why would they ever leave California? Do they even have smoothies in Missouri?

I think the better plan would be to wait for the eclipse in Spain in August 2026.
