The Fagen Fighters WWII Museum in Granite Falls, Minnesota, has just announced that will display F4U-4 Corsair BuNo 97388 through a loan agreement with owners

Bureau Number 97388 was taken on strength with the US Navy on April 26, 1946 and delivered four days later on April 30. The first two years of its service life would see it being assigned to several Naval Air Stations on the West Coast, such as Tillamook from June 1946 to October 1947, Santa Ana until March 1948, and San Diego until October of that year, when it was transferred to Marine Fighter Squadron 225 (VMF-225) at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. June of 1949 would see 97388 sent to join VMF-212, which was in Japan at that time. Though the aircraft’s recorded history with VMF-212 contains no specific dates or locations for which exact bases in Japan it served at, the squadron would become involved in air operations at the outset of the Korean War. In the first two months of the conflict, it is highly probable that 97388 took part in combat missions launched from Japan to stem the tide of the initial North Korean advance into South Korea. Its time in combat would be cut short, however, as the aircraft would be sent back to the US in August of 1950 for overhaul and maintenance at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island before it would be reassigned to Fleet Air Service Squadron 3 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. The following month, on September 14, BuNo 97388 would be assigned to VF-42. This posting would see the Corsair flying from NAS Oceana and NAS Jacksonville before being taken on a tour of the Mediterranean aboard the light carrier USS Saipan (CVL-48) from May to June of 1951, before being sent to NAS Cecil Field, Florida two months later. After a final deployment with VF-42 at NAS Oceana from November 1951 to May 1951, 97388 would undergo maintenance and overhaul at NAS Quonset Point until January 1953, when the aircraft was used primarily for reserve training at NAS Olathe, Kansas and NAS Grosse Ile, Michigan. In June of 1956, the aircraft was sent into storage at NAS Litchfield Park, Arizona before being decommissioned the following month.

After sitting outdoors at Litchfield Park, the aircraft was purchased by aircraft trader and pilot Bob Bean on November 25, 1957, who registered the Corsair as N5211V. One year later, Bean would later arrange for a trade between himself and the Honduran Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Hondureña, FAH) where 10 Corsairs (including 97388) would be shipped to Honduras in exchange for four P-38 Lightnings and four P-63 Kingcobras. In the FAH, 97388 would be identified as serial number 610, and while other Honduran Corsairs would later see combat in the Football War against El Salvador in 1969, FAH 610 had been struck off charge at the FAH Air Base at Toncontin International Airport in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, serving a source of spare parts to keep the other Corsairs flying.

FAH 610 would remain at Toncontin until 1978, when it was one of seven Honduran Corsairs returned to the United States by George Heaven & Jim Nettle of Hollywood Wings in Long Beach, California. By this point, the airframe was more a collection of parts then an airplane, and would require extensive restoration work to bring back into the skies. It would be stored in Long Beach until 1981, when it was purchased by Earl Ware of Jacksonville, who then kept the fuselage remains in his backyard, along with three other incomplete Honduran Corsairs (These being FAH 611 (USN BuNu 97382), FAH 617 (BuNo 97059), and FAH 692) until it was sold in 1982 to famed warbird restorer and pilot Gerald “Gerry” Beck of North Dakota, who would go on to spend the next 16 years meticulously returning 97388 back to airworthy condition at his shopTri-State Aviation in Wahpeton. When completed, 97388 emerged from the workshop in the markings it wore when assigned to VF-42.

After making its first post-restoration flights in 1998, Beck and 97388 would appear at EAA Airventure later that year. Over the years, 97388 would make appearances at numerous airshows and was a regular at the Fargo Air Museum in Fargo, North Dakota during the offseason, though it would later become a yearlong resident of Fargo as Beck focused on his “homebuilt” P-51A “Precious Metal II”. With the tragic death of Beck in 2007, his wife Cindy retained the Corsair and would ferry it back from Fargo to Wahpeton for refurbishment. Once completed by Tri-State in December of 2016, 97388 would be displayed at the Wings of the North Air Museum in Eden Prairie, Minnesota and was a feature of museum events such as AirExpo. With the unfortunate news of the museum’s public closure and ongoing search for a new home, Cindy and Whitney Beck have now decided to loan the Corsair to the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum. Given the wide variety of aircraft at Fagen’s expanding museum, it is indeed fortunate that 97388 has a secure home to continue flying the Midwestern skies. During the Civil War, what happened in Virginia?

Despite the fact that the Confederate garrison refused to surrender, the Union fleet was compelled to retreat. The Confederate garrison and the city itself were at odds, and the Union navy was unable to proceed. The USS Monitor eventually sank in a storm. Richmond was an important Confederate military supply center during the war. The Confederate army made apparel and battle supplies in the city's factories. It was also a rebel emblem and the subject of military attacks. As a result, Richmond's involvement in the conflict was ironic.

During the Civil War, Leesburg served in a strategic military position. Leesburg was on the banks of the river, surrounded by mountains and peaks. In 1862, a major battle was fought here, and Confederate General Robert E. Lee prevailed. Lee then intended to move the war north. Colonel Thomas Munford of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry was sent by Lee to push the Union forces out of Leesburg. The Union forces suffered serious losses and were forced to retreat to Maryland. Leesburg had about 1,500 residents at the time of the Civil War. North and South Streets ran through the town, with Church Street on the east and Liberty Street on the west. The Civil War left its impact on Leesburg since several structures in the downtown area date back to the war, but some have been modified to match modern demands.

The Richmond courthouse served as the Confederate capital during the Civil War. The structure housed Jefferson Davis's offices. The courthouse was reoccupied by the federal authorities after the war. In 1866, a grand jury met in the Richmond courthouse to accuse Davis of treason charges. Jefferson Davis later returned to the courthouse for a hearing but was never charged. The first level of the courthouse is made of ashlar granite, and the second and third floors are made of limestone. Parts of the old structure, such as the portico and arcade on Bank Street, can still be seen.

Virginia was a Confederate vessel built during the Civil War. It was originally designed as a mail packet and was black with a modest profile. This enabled it to be sneaky and difficult to catch or outrun. The Confederate States Navy purchased the ship in 1861 and transformed it into a blockade runner. The Confederate Navy aimed to weaken the Union's naval power and seize their ports as a kind of strategic economic support. They intended to accomplish this by assaulting Union commercial ships.

During the Civil War, Virginia's reconstruction was a complicated process involving a lot of political machinations. Congress mandated that the state be designated as Military District Number One and undergo a change. Black men banded together with Republicans to ensure that the new constitution reflected the interests of the freedmen. Many white Virginians were taken aback by their democratic abilities, as they conducted meetings around the state, delivered impassioned speeches, and faced threats from their employment. Black women joined the movement as well. Following the war, Richmond was placed under military authority, although the Federal government showed enormous tolerance for former Confederates. However, the Union soldiers began gathering up black Richmond citizens and transporting them to the countryside.

During the Civil War, combat between John Brown and the Confederate Army took place in Virginia. On October 14, 1859, a party of Virginia militiamen stormed the modest brick engine house where John Brown was hiding with ten prisoners and five freshly liberated slaves. The soldiers were subsequently besieged by a raucous mob and a force of US Marines led by Brevet Colonel Lee. Brown and his followers were thrashed violently when they refused to submit. Brown married his first wife while he was a young guy. He married thirteen more times, relocated the family to several places, and worked as a tanner and land investor. He also ran a wool merchant business. Brown was married and worked as a foreman during his early twenties. Dianthe Lusk, his first wife, bore him seven children. Five of the children lived to be adults. Brown later married a sixteen-year-old woman called Mary Ann Day in 1834. They had a total of thirteen children between them.

The Granite State, originally the USS New Hampshire, served for more than 60 years before its demise on the Hudson River Pier on May 23, 1921. The 2,633-ton ship caught fire while tied up on the 96th St. pier, creating a smoke plume that could be seen for miles. Northeast Ohio's Confederate Cemetery

Writing about and discussing monuments commemorating the Confederacy is a difficult task, which is why I have been avoiding composing this blog post for some time now. The Atlanta History Center divides such monuments into three categories. The first refers to mainly funerary monuments, “erected from the 1860s through the 1880s.” The second era of Confederate monuments were installed during the height of Jim Crow, from 1890 through the 1930s, and consist mainly of “an equestrian statute of a Confederate general in front of a courthouse or capitol.” These were not to mourn the loss of dead soldiers, but to celebrate the deeply racist ideals central to the identity of the former Confederate States of America. They were designed to intimidate African Americans passing through public spaces and remind them of their place in Southern society. Such monuments were, “a naked forewarning to the lowest caste of its subjugation and powerlessness… a psychic trolling of the first magnitude” (Wilkerson, 336). These were shrines and threats, aimed at affirming the myth of the Lost Cause and intimidating anyone who dared defy the strict social order. Such insolence would likely mean death. The final era occurred throughout the mid 20th century in response to Brown v. Board of Education and as an ode to segregation.

The monuments on Johnson’s Island in Ohio’s Sandusky Bay perhaps bridge the first two categories. The first Confederate monument erected on the island, a bronze and granite monolith depicting a standing Confederate soldier, was dedicated by the Cincinnati chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1910. Smaller monuments were later installed, the most recent “a set of granite markers dedicated to Confederate prisoners of war,” dedicated by the UDC in 2003. But why are these monuments here, and how should we view them, today?

I drove onto the island after visiting my beloved Marblehead Lighthouse on its namesake peninsula, the rugged, quarry-ridden cape jutting eastward from Toledo into the teal waters of Lake Erie. It was a tumultuous July evening, the trees still dripping from the severe thunderstorm that just passed through, its inky clouds still visible along the eastern horizon. The amber sun, sinking farther in the western sky, merging the remaining puddles and the thick atmosphere. The humidity was extreme.

Johnson’s Island is an unusual place. To cross the causeway from Marblehead, visitors must pay a $2 toll. The island itself is roughly 300 acres and home to extravagant lakeside homes, some built within the old quarry pit hundreds of feet below neighboring residences looming above. Its most unusual feature, however, is the Confederate Stockade Cemetery, located on the island’s northeast corner, overlooking Bay Point and Cedar Point beyond. According to the National Park Service, from 1862 to 1865, the United States War Department imprisoned more than 11,500 Confederates at its facility on Johnson’s Island, which it leased from owner Leonard Johnson for $500 per year. The site, surrounded by the waters of Lake Erie, was chosen for its relative isolation. “It was easily defensible and close to rail lines in Sandusky,” (NPS) deemed so secure, in fact, that only Confederate officers were imprisoned here.

Although originally intended only to house a maximum of 1,000 men at a time, at its peak, Johnson Island’s population exceeded 3,255 in 1865. Population numbers were generally lower, however, due to the Union and Confederate armies frequently swapping prisoners of war. The prison, although more luxurious than those for ordinary soldiers, lacked appropriate sanitation, infrastructure, and food, and was frequently overcrowded. Diseases spread quickly throughout the prison and Lake Erie winters were undoubtedly harsh.

In 1864, Confederate soldiers based in Ontario attempted to raid the island. “They successfully seized two passenger steamers in Lake Erie and planned to capture the USS Michigan and use the warship to free the officers on Johnson’s Island,” (NPS) but aborted the mission. As a result, the Union strengthened its prison’s defenses, fearing possible future attacks.

After Robert E. Lee’s surrender and the Confederacy swore its oath of allegiance to the United States in 1865, the prison’s population decreased. By the end of the year, the War Department had returned control of the island to Johnson. During its time as a prison, only 239 men died on the island, their bodies buried a half mile from the original prison facility. Over 20 bodies were removed by friends and family after the Civil War and taken elsewhere. To commemorate those who remain, 206 marble headstones were erected after a group of Georgia journalists described the lack of permanent markers memorialize these men.

The Robert Patton Chapter of the UDC purchased the cemetery in 1905. Chapter leader, Mary Patton Hudson, worked feverishly to oversee improvements to the sight, including the construction of a fence around the cemetery. Her most notable contribution was the large statue of a Confederate soldier, dubbed The Lookout, created by Moses Ezekiel and dedicated in June 1910. “The [UDC] installed two monuments at the cemetery in 1925. The Mack-Hauck Memorial honors two members of the organization instrumental in preserving the Johnson’s Island cemetery” (NPS). Hudson herself was later dedicated a memorial for her effort to purchase the cemetery which was later donated to the federal government in 1931. Since then, additional granite markers have been placed in memory of Confederate prisoners of war.

Nostalgia has been described as “the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return,” (Kundera, 5) and, walking along the rows of headstones and among the ornate monuments in the cemetery on that hot July evening, I was struck by perhaps its opposite. Those who erected such memorials, however, clearly felt this way towards the Confederacy, yearning for its return. The Confederate Cross of Honor in northern soil, with initials CSA encompassing a Confederate battle flag, earnestly and shamelessly celebrates a brief instance of Confederate sovereignty, a reclamation of a place once designed to contain and irradicate it. The pedestal of Ezekiel’s statute reads and is dedicated “to those who died in federal prison on this island during the war between the states,” commemorating those Confederate officers, “dead, but sceptered sovereigns who still rule us from the grave.” The line is from Lord Byron’s Manfred, taken from a scene in which the titular character recounts the former glories of the Roman capital. He describes the “chief relics of almighty Rome,” the “ruinous perfection,” of “Caesar’s chambers, … the Augustan halls,” a place where all that remains is beautiful. “The place Became religion, and the heart ran o’er With silent worship of the great of old” (Byron). The “great of old” here is the legacy of slavery and a society built upon it. For the Confederacy, the owning of twelve generations of human chattels whose patriarchs and matriarchs were stolen from a distant continent was the state-sanctioned religion. The statue is chilling, the words inscribed within it are haunting.

Horrifying as it is, however, I think this is a monument which should be permitted to stand. It is relatively isolated and within a cemetery for America’s war dead. The statuary, although blatantly racist and clearly regaling the country’s most evil legacy, does not act to intimidate citizens in a public square like others. Furthermore, it is a physical relic of a not-too-distant past, personifying the horrors of before, which continue to echo through the modern day. This place made me think of those who commissioned and built its monuments, not with empathy or reverence, but with chilling terror. The tentacles of those who advocated something which, to me, seems almost unimaginable, poke out of the ground in this humble cemetery in Northeast Ohio. The relics earnestly bearing “CSA” really mean it, celebrating a government which actually existed in Montgomery, AL and Richmond, VA, and to which millions (and many who still) pledged their allegiance. These artifacts somehow make it real, the Confederacy: tangible, palpable, solid, and heavy, like a piece of iron in one’s hand. A prolonged southern invasion of my beloved northern home. Let this not be a place of veneration, but one bearing the scars of the past, a quiet warning of the persistence of hatred, imprisoning once more the evils of yore in a fixed position, viewable to all who venture near, but not germinating and sowing the malice, loathing, and rancor of those it commemorates, but nudging us forward to a more equitable and just future.

USS Oklahoma Memorial in Oklahoma Veterans Memorial Park, across from the Oklahoma State Capitol in Oklahoma City OK. Thanks to the American Legion for the description.

On December 7, 1999, a memorial to the USS Oklahoma was unveiled. It was dedicated to those sailors and marines killed on that ship during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma Memorial is made up of two different colors of granite. A light gray granite surrounds the memorial and four large light gray granite are on the top. The bottom is red granite polished with name engraved. Etched image of the USS Oklahoma at the upper left area on the light gray granite. USS Oklahoma is red granite on top followed by BB37. May 2, 1917 – Dec 7-8, 1941 are in black on the light gray granite. These words “These heroes perished when the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii” are on the light gray granite in black. USS Oklahoma Casualty List on the bottom of the memorial with Navy listed first followed by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Hub Fans Bid Summer Welcome

Summer is inevitable.

It does not care if we are ready for it. The progression of time measured in hours, days, weeks, and months or other markers leads to its arrival. 

And here it is, bright and hot.

Every year I find that its presence is felt a bit more acutely.

When I woke up on my trip across the country 25 years ago, I always wondered what each summer day would bring. There was so much to do, so many new sidewalks, and the hope of new conversations.

I still feel that excitement, even if it does take me a bit longer to get up, aided by the promise of coffee to help shake things loose.

In that spirit of shared urban experiences, I recently asked a few Boston friends to tell me about what they like to do in the summer.

Their words inspire me as my own work continues this summer on my book.

Stroll on the Greenway - Running between Chinatown and the North End the Greenway includes lots of fun spots in between. Take in the changing plantings, what’s blooming, what’s about to. Find your new favorite art. Watch the clever birds flocking in the trees around this “Harbor Fog” sculpture. They‘ve figured out the cool fog is motion-activated. On hot days, they await the next walkers and then swoop down through the cool mist.

At the North End, grab lunch at the Boston Public Market (buck a shuck or lobster rolls at Red’s Best, Ramen at Noodle Lab two faves) and eat in or picnic in the park.

Speaking of the North End, grab a sandwich at Monica’s on Salem St and maybe even a split of wine along the way for an impromptu picnic. Don’t forget the best cannoli from Maria’s.

At the other end, Chinatown holds many delicious treats, too. Relax in the garden, and take a photo safari capturing the iconic images like the paifang or gate, the fountain, the roast ducks hanging in the windows, or numerous murals. Harbor Walk is the bright point in the Seaport development boom. Enjoy the fire pit while watching the sailboats on the harbor.

The ICA has a beautiful view, and built in steps. Summer Thursdays it’s the place to be for free music concerts.

Taking a walk along the Charles or in the Public Garden. Bring your phone or camera and snap some IG ready or postcard shots. Check the fountain commemorating the advent of ether. Imagine the early days of surgery? Yikes.

It’s a beautiful fountain and a nice corner of the park. (Arlington and Marlborough, in case you did not know)

Admission is free to the BPL and the BPL offers discounted and free passes to many museums in the city (plan ahead). The Gardner is free on some days and many discounts apply (is your name Isabella? You get in free! Is it your birthday? Free!) check both sites for more details.

Jacqueline Church, is the founder of Boston Chinatown Tours. She can be found Between Dumplings, strolling the Greenway, the harbor  walk, or otherwise eating and drinking her way around the city.

A concert by the Landmarks Orchestra on a Wednesday evening at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade in July or August. These free concerts are a great treasure in our city and they are an excellent way to spend an evening. It is beautiful to watch the sun go down over the Charles River as well while listening to some excellent music.  

Another great summer activity is the Dewey Square Thursday evening block parties on the Greenway.  Admission is free and the beer and wine is cheap and the setting is energetic.  

It's a nice way to end the day or start the night.

You can buy snacks aboard the Harbor Islands ferries, but that’s a rookie move.

Varsity level is this: stop for your favorite bagel along the way, arrive at Long Wharf early enough to snag a copy of Spare Change News and lounge in one of the Adirondack chairs inexplicably placed seaside.

The bagel is for once you’re on the boat, watching the skyline shrink as you approach Spectacle Island. But it never goes away.

There’s plenty to see on the island - the sea glass, the nature trails - but the city’s most peaceful summer moment is to be found laying afloat in the harbor, partially submerged, watching that skyline and heading only waves, feeling both relaxed and energized, linked to both the modern city and the timeless ocean, at once a part of the city and refreshingly apart from it.

My grandfather used to say that South Boston was the city’s best kept secret.  The neighborhood is surrounded by Boston Harbor, we are close to downtown, and it’s rich in history, making it one of the best neighborhoods around.

Taking a walk on Day Boulevard along the beaches is a simple summer joy. Start at Carson Beach and walk your way along the beach line all the way out to Castle Island.  I always plan to stop at Sullivan’s for some fried clams or an ice cream.

On Thursday evenings in the summer you can enjoy a sunset tour of Fort Independence.  Free tours are also available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm-3pm. Another Southie summer bucket list item for me is to to head to Coppersmith’s Airdeck.

This gorgeous spot has a view of the city skyline, tasty food, and pitchers of red and white Sangria served via a vintage Airstream trailer-turned-full service bar. It’s a bit of heaven right here in Southie.

The best place in Boston for families to be in the summer is Castle Island. It seems like everyone in the city knows this fact already: The cars routinely back up all the way to the Farragut statue on a nice weekend day.

What’s the appeal?

Well, there’s the inexpensive food at the Sully’s snack stand, for one. My go-to choice is the baked haddock. Not quite Legal Sea Foods, but better than most restaurants in Southie, and half the price.

There’s no better vantage point in the city to watch the various jets and boats come in and out of Boston’s port. Every foot of the 2-plus mile loop around Pleasure Bay offers great views for cyclists, runners and walkers. (The grilling/picnic area is also unlike any other in the city – it’s why so many parties get held there.) The causeway barriers help ensure deep enough water for swimming, even if the tide is low. If you’re lucky, you’ll find hermit crabs hanging out just below the surface.

And this is all in the shadow of a 19th century granite fort. (If you time it right, you can get a free tour of the spooky corridors behind those walls.) Getting there can be challenging, given the traffic. Best to park by the statue on or near Farragut Road and walk the boardwalk to the island. (Several Southie bus lines also swing down Farragut). Or show up later in the day, as sun-weary visitors make their departures, opening up parking spots.

Boston and I first met on an idyllic family trip, many summers ago. 

We sank into the sunny days, savoring the luxury of a week away from work and school and predictable pursuits. Adventure, please! 

We hiked the Big Dig-era Freedom Trail, toured museums, marveled at the Aquarium. The city skyline, a silver streak rising from the sea, dazzled without being showy. The red cobblestones and black lanterns of Beacon Hill held magic, like an old stage set we’d stumbled across from another century. 

Tired but ready to keep going, we refueled with fresh ice cream on Newbury Street, a jaunt through the long-lost fairy-and-griffin shop, and an afternoon race through the Coop’s tall fortress of books.  There were fried clam rolls loaded high and quiet, calmer moments in Old North Church. For a week, it seemed like early American history held still enough for us to see it. Click!

Every year, as the swan boats begin their stately circuit in the Public Garden, I smile over that summer. For, a little lighter after the students’ exodus, Boston still has many charms. 

Take the newly renovated central Public Library, which opened in 1895 as “a palace for the people.” Sun-dappled pockets of shade set off the courtyard, a favorite reading nook. Murals by John Singer Sargent, Puvis de Chavannes, and Edwin Austin Abbey share real estate with shifting art exhibits, live concerts, miles of manuscripts, and plenty of books. 

Walk through worlds at the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center. Page through President John Adams’ personal library. Dig into transcribing anti-slavery archives. A lunch hour spent in the Boston Public Library, lost between the lions, can make your summer sing.

Here are my thoughts on a good (possibly great) summer day in Boston.

For me, a good start to a summer day in Boston would be to get an egg & pepper omelette on a bulky roll from Sammy Carlo’s on Bennington Street in East Boston. Steve Schire and his family have owned the business for decades and it reminds me of the morning bustle I’ve found in other locales, including Chicago’s Valois (Cafeteria) and the long-gone Tio’s in Seattle.

Take that sandwich over to Constitution Beach and watch the planes take off from Logan Airport. Go stand on the pedestrian bridge over the Blue Line and think about “Where are they all going?”

After a time, you might say “Where I am going?”

Jump on the Blue Line at Orient Heights and take the train inbound to the Aquarium. You’ll pass under water, but you won’t get wet, which is always a treat. Up, up, up and away to the Long Wharf, which used to be much, much longer, but times change.

For a few bucks, you can get on the passenger ferry here to Charlestown and the shipyard where the USS Constitution resides. It’s the cheapest way to get on the water, short of jumping into Boston Harbor, which quite frankly, sure it’s clean these days, but yeah, no thanks.

The 15 minute ride lets you see the vertical expansion of East Boston writ large in upscale residences and a range of pleasure craft bobbing along. You can spend a few hours wandering above the shipyard, up and down and around Old Ironsides and around Dry Dock Number 2, which is just as good as Dry Dock Number 1 and do not left anyone tell you differently.

Even if you have been here before, you’ve never been here with the teeming throngs you’ll find that day, and if you listen closely, you’ll hear a new set of reactions to Boston, cities, and tourist locales that you’ve never heard before. People make stories about places through the stories they tell. And when we listen to those stories that they tell we have new stories.

First, that statue. It’s one of the things I helped to design while held captive in 1998-2002 or so, only to the extent that I spoke with someone who was said to have been commissioned to carve a statue of Martin Luther King while on a phone call that was put into my hands to speak. I was asked what sort of pose the statue should have, and my response was exactly what you see there. I said make it big, a block of solid granite as large as can be transported, make it so the man is walking out of the stone, into the three dimensional world, but do not finish the statue.

I have an assessment of what took place at Pearl Harbor in 1942.

Goes like this:

Hawaii is prime real estate, lot’s of interest in the place was happening at the time, and the British had already done a One Hour Martinizing there to kill off most of the Hawaiian natives when they sent the “Safety Committee” there.

The Brits had a plan, in competition with USA, who showed on Hawaii and built out a US navy base there at Pearl Harbor before Hawaii became a US State. The British were pissed off about that, and were still steaming over that Boston Tea Party and the results of it in USA.

So, the British plan, is also a Vatican plan. They work it out were a whole bunch of fake Japanese Zero’s are built, they all have Mercedes Benz motors, or, Rolls Royce motors in them. I can‘t remember which motor I saw, one or the other, first impression is Mercedes Benz today.

The plan is to float an armada of British Friendly's within aircraft carrier range of Hawaii, to take out the base at Pearl Harbor. That needed a cover, so a small patrol boat was sent to go get into RADAR range of the Pearl Harbor command, while that aircraft carrier is farther away, all loaded with fake Zero’s. Pearl Harbor see’s the blip on the RADAR, contacts the British boat, who says they are just doing some routine patrol by orders of the Queen. It’s all “friendly”.

So, the Kobi Beef is loaded up and a flotilla brings home the bacon right to the British pirate ship aboard the USS Arizona. The Brits take over the US boat on approach with a fog of nitrous oxide, and bring the aircraft carrier directly into Pearl Harbor, all painted as a US Aircraft carrier, along with the hijacked Arizona. They proceed to destroy all of the boats in the harbor and kill many thousands of US navy servicemen, and then distribute some crashed fake Zero’s around the harbor, sink the USS Arizona that brought the Kobi Beef right there in the harbor, then leave, but the British also leave behind a lot of British soldiers for later.

The deed is all done.

The US President looks to me to have been in on the Pearl Harbor British hijack to me, the speech the following day was less than empathetic, or genuine, was a staged event, had a lot of “canned” per-arranged flavor to it, and the audience at the speech seems strange to me. Personally, I feel that secrecy would have been the order of the day at that point and the president should have some other place doing more important work than pleasing a camera.

Fast forward.

Later, way after the dust settled, after the second word war is said to have ended, the result seems to be that Hawaii is a sort of “Grey Area”. If you been there it’s easier to understand how that is apparent that Hawaii is a “Grey Area”.

The British won the island. But it has a US Flag and a US Post Office there.

That is where the Vatican component plays in. They are pirates, so Hawaii is a paradise where victims, Jesus’, is easily drawn to for a vacation, and, those who go to Hawaii on vacation are those who can afford that level of vacation luxury, so in advance, the Vatican knows that all of the Jesus’ that goes there are wealthy Jesus’. Whales at a whale hunt.

My conclusion is that Britain and US government both are working in league to use Hawaii as a Jesus’ Whale Hunting Grounds Island Paradise Vacation Bait, and have been doing so since before WWII, and before Hawaii became a US State, before the post office or flag was put there, on the heels of the Safety Committee, who was there ahead of the British Aircraft carrier that brought the fake Zero’s that had the Mercedes Benz motors in them.

I think that Safety Committee played a bigger role than what I can think of. All of that I explained there is based on three visits to the island, surviving some unbelievable events that took place, and mostly is all based on having seen the Mercedes Benz motors that were in the fake Zero’s.

All of the books that had photos of those crashed Zero’s are being hunted like Jesus’. The Vatican needs those all destroyed, and I suspect there are not many copies of old revealing photography of the events in the aftermath of the fake attack at Pearl Harbor.

Other considerations are complex, and include that in all of the confusion, Japan was taken by the British/Vatican forces also.

The whole of World War II could show to be all completely different truth than what the official story is. The situation is such that for someone to question what really took place, you need to look at the Nazi’s and Adolf Hitler as victims, rather than the mass murderers they are said to be. That is a platform that no one can publicly ever stand on and survive long enough to speak. That kind of arrangement is exactly what the Vatican Pirates have used as a successful means of cover for the pirating they do. Some people who are better equipped to withstand a visit to that idea of “Nazi’s and Hitler could have been victims” should have a look at that. I am going to stay away from that.

That above looks like a response to “Allouette HQ” I said some things about the other day.

It’s a hit order from one or more of the Allouette HQ musicians, who are in direct contact with Dietrick terror cells. Being that it’s an Allouette, and Dietricks are the people who distribute the SAG heroin to the Canadian terror army, this is some of the highest level Vatican Choir terror hit orders available for study anywhere.

Do I need to spell it out? Does it matter? Will help if I spell it out? If so, who will benefit from spelling out how to read that high command hit order?

The order is from a Roger Waters, Ann Wilson, Ted nugent, perhaps a Philip Mountbatten level of terror hit orders.

It specifies dead, not capture. It specifies removal of the information from public view, but no one can see the information to my knowledge, so, I really don‘t see why the information is being ordered to come down off of the internet if it’s all invisible anyway.

Each and every button click must be repeated, have to click the button, see that nothing happened, then click the button another time, usually works on the second try.

This is always the case: When I want to add photo here, I use that small camera icon, it takes me to a folder where I have collected many hundreds of visual aid photos there. In that window, there is a pull down menu at the bottom right, it has some choices about what sort of images I want to choose from in the folder, there is the default setting that says: “Image files”, and there is a choice that says: “All Files”. So, if I want to see all of the photos in the folder, so I can find the one I am looking for among hundreds, I need to use the: “All Files” selection, it takes an extra effort to do that. The thing about that drop down menu, is there is some kind of way that Centurylink ISP is able to go into my folder through that pull down menu, to hide some of the photos from view. So, I know the photo I want to post is around here somewhere, but where the heck did it go? It was there just a few minutes ago, maybe I put that one over in this other folder over here.... so I have to go over to that other folder to see where the heck that photo went to... it’s not in there either... so, Ohhh yeah... I forgot I have to specify “All Files” or else the photos don’t always show up when I want to post one on Tumblr, so, I use the pull down menu to select the “All Files” selection to start over to hunt for the photo I am looking for... but it’s not in that folder either... so, maybe I put that one over here in this other folder... I just saw the darn thing a minute ago... where the heck is that rascal....

Maybe they will give it back later on... I’ll just go ahead and wait for the terror bastards from Centurylink to be done barrowing my photo, and post it later on.

Local Update:

My eyes are burning. My right leg has burning sensation internally. The rash on my right shin is aggravated, and painful. my vision is poor, blurry.

A walk to the mailbox was cold and dark.

Most notable is the presence of poison gas and a group of many people nearby the George/Donkey terror cell one house south of 3701 Russell Rd. and another group at Dietricks 601 duplicating the noises made by the group on Russell Rd.

The poison gas is of the very powerful laxative variety, is strong at both ends of my driveway, near the Big Ass Corona Tree near the Monroe Pole Barn. and is also strong at the road where my driveway meets Jackpine. The effect of the poison is instantaneous, causes a internal stomach churn immediately, blurred vision and those other symptoms mentioned all at once.

The Monroe’s have removed most of what privacy barrier existed between my driveway and their yard, almost all of the bamboo is gone, and the brush is all cleared up to the fence line at where my gate is, only. Other parts of the Monroe yard remain mostly as they have been for a long time.

There are bamboo shafts poked through the fence intentionally encroaching through the wire field fence.

The small rounds of wood that were placed on that saw horse there have disappeared one at a time over the past few days, was four of them, then three, then two, now none, on my side of the fence again.

Their was no mail delivery today, however I checked anyway to see that someone had opened my mailbox again, it’s been a trend this week and last that my mailbox has been opened and then closed in such a way that I can see that someone has been in the mailbox.

The noises made by the two groups of people were the Sparacino/Dietrick variety of fake coyote calls. There are no coyotes in these parts of Oregon, there are only terror soldiers who make coyote sounds by yelling as an Indian from India does.

It’s 29 degrees, the sky is a clear and the stars are as bright as they can be.

Earlier this evening there was someone on my front porch about five feet away from where I am sitting on the other side of the door, a electronic device made a beep sound outside, and the terrorist bastard left after that.

I estimate there are ten people, five or six at George/Donkey (a dead terror soldier who’s house is used for staging attacks on my house, is catywhompass to the south west of my property, I share one corner fence post with the George/Donkey location) others at Dietricks, and at least two people at Sparacino’s also. Fake coyote sounds from all three locations as I reached the mailboxes.

There is a communication device inside of one or more of the mailboxes on Jackpine where terror cell members have been reporting to as they enter the neighborhood for the past twenty years. There was a time when I had been selected among the neighbors to change the batteries in the thing from time to time, I was given the batteries, told make sure the thing was functional, it was encased in a garage door opener at the time, twenty or more years ago, and I did not understand that it was part of a terror communication network back then, and the neighbors all assumed that since I was still alive, I must be one of them, so, I put batteries into garage door opener a few times back then, and then put it back into the Phillips 507 box where it was kept. I figured out later that it was a terror communication tool, and stopped replacing the batteries, thereby causing another problem, and subsequently, was held captive along with my family. And That is when I was forced to design so much stuff for them, when they saw that I had specialized equipment, and special skills, my family was not killed, we were used instead.

This thing is a problem.

Character Map.

It’s part of the Windows Operating System, I am using 8.1.

Windows 8.1 is also a problem on it’s own, there is no way around that one though, once 8.1, always 8.1.

The Character Map has access to it through the internet, I saw the thing as it loaded the bug it makes. The Character Map is part of a multi-part system of hijack, aggravation generator, mysterious malfunction production center all orchestrated through the fake Norton 360 Symantec product that has been rebranded as “Norton Life Lock”, I pay for 360, I get Life Lock.

The Character Map seems to be the source of why every click of a button must be done twice. Click once, nothing happens, click again, and it all seems to work for a minute, until the next thing happens.

Many people experience a glitch while online, where the letter n simple will not produce a letter n. People try everything they can think of to get the letter n to make a letter n when they type some words.

Every letter is important to have available.

The letter n is very important, you need one to spell “nitrous oxide poison gas”.

People who experience the online “no n“ bug, will clean the keyboard, take it apart, will order a new keyboard online to repair the thing, they will take the computer to “The Geek Squad” at the Best Buy, and they will throw the computer against the wall, in utter aggrivation after all of that stuff does not work to replace the missing letter n.

You can see much letter n aggravation I experienced here on this account going way back, where my remedy was to use a different character, these _ most of the time, in place of a letter n that would not type.

So, for me, I avoided breaking the computer or throwing it, for a long time, by simply using the underscore (tombstone) character instead. Then, June 15 2020 happened, the door of my house was kicked in, someone lost a leg, it was on the floor, still had the shoe on there, and then a whole bunch or sheriff deputies came in as I was leaning against the door in relief of having survived the asshole with the sword who busted through the door.

The Sheriff knows all about the n bug, and saw that my computer was not broken at the n like everyone else’s computer is, so, he smashed the keyboard as the other deputies were kneeling on my neck and twisting my leg around backwards.

After I survived the jail, and survived the JC Taxi they called for me so I could get home ($50 + $5 tip to go 13 miles), the letter n still worked, for a short time. The space bar and the letter n on the key board were both damaged, and now, I don‘t have a letter n, have to use Character Map.

Character Map is a place where I can get a fresh letter n whenever I need one, just copy & paste, for a n. I can also get a capital letter N, but that takes extra effort to do that.

Is “Holy Grail” Hi-Fidelity equipment. Even today, that unit is unmatched.

I knew this guy, Tom McKenna, he had one, said his dad shipped it from Okinawa in around 1978.

At the time, there was only one recorded piece of sound effects that could utilize the four channel separtion that unit offered. It was a vinyl recording of a locomotive that was optimized to play in a surround sound way. With four speaker arranged around the listener at four corners, the locomotive encircles the listener, keeps going around, and around, as other sounds are introduced into the mix.

That was way before Dolby 5.1.

(There is a man by the name of Tom Smith, a service manager at Mock’s Ford Global Terror Command HQ in Grants Pass Oregon, who I suspect is the same man who demonstrated the Marantz unit to me in 1978, in Canoga Park California.)

There is something special about that particular Marantz “High Fidelity” unit. I don‘t know what is special about it. What may be special is the Q, the 5.1, and, when I looked at them, there were some weird looking round something inside, about six in a line visible through the grill, about one inch diameter.

Very small detail of electronic weirdness, and a possible link from Britain to Hollywood, is why I mention the QSC 5.1 amp model. Is not worth a photo, has only two knobs and a I/O switch.

PIMCO is on the Decoder Ring RADAR through small indications on Twitter news today, very subtle, is worth looking for.

PIMCO is said to be a corporation that is in the business of obtaining other behemoth size corporations through Hostile Take Over, then taking the component corporate holdings apart, to auction, or otherwise split, divide, weaken the structure of those behemoth size corporate entities.

PIMCO is said to be located three doors down from Windsor Castle, or maybe it was Buckingham Palace, I forget which one.

Starting today, the dynamics behind the Wall Street markets, nyse, nasdaq, forex, and “The Pink Sheets” is all under new management, back to Obama style economic powers. Those are the same conditions that were in place for Too Big To Fail in aftermath of G.W. Bush’s hijack of US Treasury & Reserve.

When I reflect on my youth in Southern California, I am reminded that all of the people I thought were my friends, were all terror soldiers. I was in the middle of a whole bunch of stuff going on that I did not understand, had not gone to the terror training at the church like the others had done.

One of my best friends, Darrin Murphy, told me: “You are like Mr. McGoo, there is stuff falling out of the sky all around you, and you never get hit... how do you do that?”

I still did not understand.

Some speculation about some specific terror army housing arrangement possibilities:

On Catalina Island, 26 miles off the coast of Laguna nigel (look closely at everything around there, the names of the places around there, and how it is connected to Coachella Valley by Hwy 74 for more about this speculation)

J & C Construction, in 1983, just after the 29 Palms US Military base service members were all brutally slaughtered there, many were dragged from vehicles along Hwy 62. Was bloody and brutal. That is when there was a housing project at Hamilton Cove just north of Avalon. There, the condominium project on the hillside had been abandoned by a previous building contractor ten years before the J & C Construction resumed the project there at Hamilton Cove under direction of carpenters foremen by the name of Gene, Jerry McRae and the owner of J & C Construction, John Holmes, who’s wife (Cynthia Holmes? Stephanie Holmes?)  is the Contractor’s Licensed Contractor. (Lot’s of terror stories can be told from the J & C Construction standpoint. Search this account for Mayor Tom Bradley and J & C Construction to see more Los Angeles based terror housing speculation possibilities. Pay attention to Handicap Units, and V-8 concrete there, then, all of that is why Mark Keisel of Keisel Guitars sent me a free guitar with a bomb inside, it exploded when someone stole it from my front porch in Riverside CA after I spoke with Mayor Bradley on the phone one day in around 1994. I put it on the porch so it wouldn’t explode inside the house, is better outside for that)

So, this speculation could go a lot of different ways to explain many other aspects of take over of Avalon, and Catalina Island.

I’m limiting this to possibility that perhaps the Hamilton Cove project, including that it had been setting dormant and the buildings were incomplete and rotting for ten years, and the reasons for that to have happened (unknown reasons) was all part of a plan to house an elite group of terror soldiers, who could deploy from the island, go do attacking, then return to their homes on the island at Hamilton Cove condominiums, very nice places to live. Access and proximity to Coachella Valley through Hwy 74 is key to this speculation, and includes suspicion of a particular airport along Hwy 74, is not very well known, special airport where gliders are launched from, the kind that have very big wing span, have no onboard power, are silent, and must be towed by another airplane for them to reach altitude, where they can stay aloft all day without refueling, when optimum thermal desert conditions exist, nearby.

So, some specially trained terror operatives may be subsidized to live there at Hamilton Cove, a remote place where no one is ever going to look for people who do terror “Over Town“ as is the local terms for speaking about the mainland 26 miles away by boat, to Laguna nigel, nearby Carlsbad.

There have been six ships commissioned named after the state of Alabama in the US Navy. The state of Alabama was admitted into the United States on December 14, 1819.

USS Alabama (1819), North Carolina class, 74 gun ship of the line. Laid down in 1819 as part of the "nine ships to rate not less than 74 guns each authorized by Congress on April 29, 1816, and was laid down by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Maine, in June 1819, the year the State of Alabama was admitted to the Union. Though ready for launch by 1825, she remained on the stocks for preservation; an economical measure that avoided the expense of manning and maintaining a ship of the line." She was launched in 1864 as a receiving ship and renamed USS New Hampshire. In 1904 renamed USS Granite State to free the name for USS New Hampshire (BB-25). She was destroyed by fire in 1921.

Hotel Zephyr uses a huge yard with video games and fire pits to keep everybody hectic.

Spend the day at the Exploratorium , consume some seafood at Fisherman's Wharf , ride the cable television vehicles, go to PIER 39 , delight in a giant-sized sundae at Ghirardelli Square and view the Bay Bridge illuminate the sky. It's a night the kids will always remember!

My Nature Vest

A few years back my late grandmother got me a nature vest for Christmas one year. I wanted one to hold all of my nature gear when I went out on hikes and to show off the places I have gone. It has turned out to be one of my most cherished items that I wear on my outings. I wear it not only as a reminder of my grandmother but as a conversation starter. I must say it has turned many heads. Now these photos I have to show are older but all my patches have been added that I got back on the winter trek to the coast and all around Texas. I started to collect patches for it back when I got it. I wanted to have it like a billboard for all the cool places I have been. Every time I go out to a new place that has a gift shop I am always looking for patches. I have a lot so far but I am going back out to Colorado soon so I am going to be looking for some great keepsakes and patches on this next exciting adventure here in a couple of weeks. 

Here is the front left side of the vest. The top very top patch is one that I got my first time out to the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge a place I didn’t know I would be volunteering for at the time. This is one of the coolest patches for it is a place that I volunteer at and often visit to do some nature hikes. It is also the place where I did the Texas Master Naturalist training class. People often get this thing mixed up for a boy scout thing but I am quick to correct them. I was never in the scouts even though it is popular belief that I was among my friends. I do lead scout hikes and things when I am volunteering but I am not a boy scout. No I am just an wildlife fanatic and a naturalist. The next patch I want to point out is the Caldwell Zoo Patch. That is by far one of my favorite Zoos here in Texas. I had this patch for years and finally put it on something so it wouldn’t be collecting dust. I love this one because of the many fond memories of that Zoo when I was a child up to adulthood. That place is so amazing; I love going out there from time to time even though I don’t visit many zoos anymore. I spend a lot of time out in nature. The Star one is for an historical area known as Washington on the Brazos; I went out there during my horrific time in junior high. I say horrific because I was not very appreciated and was constantly bullied and made fun of by a lot of people who didn’t understand me at all. I got this patch when I was doing a project with places that had historical markers. I took a bunch of weekend trips to get pictures of me in front of historical markers. This place is kind of cool for it was where the Declaration of Texas was signed. They have a lot there on site even a small living farm with people who tell how life back in the 1800s was. I don’t just have nature areas on this vest but some areas of Texas cultural importance. The last one on this section was an old Cave badge I got from who knows where. I was really young so I don’t remember where I got this one but it is on my vest because I love caves and caving. I don’t go to a lot of caves but there are some really neat ones I like to go to. I am going to see if there are any good caves in Colorado to visit that will be very fun. 

The next side will be the right side of my vest: 

I have a ton of patches on the back; if you are familiar with my blog posts you may remember my trip to the coast. The top middle then the middle row’s first and third patches are my most recent ones from my whirlwind trip across Texas last winter. Here in Texas we have a bunch of cool areas to visit. the ones shown here are all from Texas. The first one is from a beautiful place called Ink’s Lake which is really close to a favorite place of called Enchanted Rock. Hill Country Texas is full of granite and a lot of it. Ink’s Lake and more importantly the formation known as Devil’s Waterhole is right in a valley of Granite. I saw my first Earless Lizard right in that valley and also saw some cool plants and things. I even saw my first Black-throated Sparrow and my first Ladder-backed Woodpecker at this park. The one after the Waco Mammoth Site is from Texas’ only National Seashore in Padre Island. It is one of my favorite place to go birding in the early morning. I also went to one of their famous Sea Turtle Releases there for their Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles. That place is so cool there are birds of plenty and I went there over the course of my winter trek to the coast last winter right before Christmas. The next patch I want to draw your attention is the middle patch. This one is from the USS Lexington Museum by the Bay in Corpus Christi. I have a deep respect for history and WWII History has always interested us. We had a few veterans in our family line and we really respect the sacrifices the military men and women make each day to keep our country safe. I for one may be a naturalist but the way I see it you can’t be a naturalist without knowing a little history. It all goes hand in hand. I have said it many times; learn nature and you history because some times your natural areas have a rich history behind them. It is not boring it is really good to know what went on in history to edify you and to not make the same mistakes again. I love boats and ships and ship wrecks have always been of interest to me. This cool museum is a must for a trip to the Texas Coast. It maybe a little cramped in places but this place has it all. You can explore most decks of the ship and learn about the design and the history of the USS Lexington which was originally supposed to be called the USS Cabot but when the first Lexington went down in the battle of the Coral Sea this ship became it successor and was given the nickname of the “Blue Ghost”. This is just one of my favorite places and it is a big part of the coast life near the JFK Cause way for it is a facet in the bay’s architecture and landscape now. 

Now for three bottom ones; I didn’t go over the three from Waco Mammoth, Aransas National Monument, or the Inner Space Caverns for I already have a blog post about how I obtained those. The next one I wanted to talk about is the one with the Pelicans. That one is from the John Bunker Sands wetland Center. I went there for the first time back in 2016. It was during the time I was just starting to get really serious about birding. There was a birding festival and fun walk which was part of the 5th Anniversary celebration. It is not open all the time and they say a lot of the best birding spots are now closed off from the public so I have not been out there since but it was a really cool area. They have a nesting pair of Bald Eagles out there who have an amazing story to their nest. The place is so cool and many birds gather there year after year to feed and stop over on their migration routes during the winter and spring. The next patch is the green one across from the previous one. That was obtained when I went to Colorado Bend State Park. One of the most beautiful areas to visit in Texas in my book. This place has a really nice trail called Gorman Falls. It is a fairly easy trail until you get to the end of it. There are a bunch of slippery rocks and things and is kind of hard to navigate but they have support ropes to help ease you up and down. I still have yet to get back and go on the other trails but it is so neat to explore there. I got a bunch of neat cactus and some really nice bird photos there. The last one on my vest’s back as of now is the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center patch. It has turned into one of my favorite parks; I have volunteered out there a couple of time and I am going again in a few weeks for an Orchid Walk on June 22nd. It is a nice place with a huge hill and in some areas you can get a nice view of Joe Pool Lake. Ahhh... this place is such a pretty place. I saw my first Brown Recluse Spider here and many other Arachnids and insects on my last Moth night out there. Such fun memories do these patches conjure up with good friends and good family moments. Each one is more than just a piece of fabric stitched on a vest; it is a reminder to me of some of the best wild lands of Texas and the world. Some are even reminders of hard work and achievement as you will see now. 

The first one I want to share with you is the patch that stands for what I am in the naturalist community. I got this Texas Master Naturalist patch when I graduated from the State Class of 2016 for the Cross Timbers Eco Region. This was the most proudest moment of my life to date. Being a Texas Master Naturalist may sound daunting but we are known as Masters not for us personally but for we uphold the lessons of the naturalists who came before us and continue their practices. It is very meaningful to be part of this group for in it I have found my voice to speak about nature and I help kids and the rest of community learn about animals and the environment and to make that connection and inspire future generations to care about our planet and to give back to their communities. This is something that I will always remember till the day I die. This is how I became the naturalist I am today. We are hard working volunteers who help make communities have a strong connection with nature. It is an honor to be working with some of the top minds and people in the naturalist field. It is nice to be among them and be one of them. The patch above this one is the one I got out in Arkansas at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. This place is not only a great place to look for wildlife but the river system that runs through it was the water way of the Trail of Tears. This place was also the place where I went on my very first night hike to look for owls and creatures of the night. I found my very first Eastern Hercules Beetle there which was really neat. But there is another patch here that is of both a memorable place and an achievement.

 Here is the last patch on my vest that I have so far. This one was when I became a Junior Park Ranger for the Garden of the Gods area. This place is one of the coolest places to go in Colorado. It was also a popular meeting place for when we would meet my aunt after she got out of class when we were there. We are all from Texas but my aunt teaches and takes classes out of state sometimes so on the week of my thirteenth year of live we went up there and did a lot there. It was a nice trip and I remember it like it was yesterday. I had to add this one for it is a nice patch and reminds me of one of my favorite achievements in life to better understand an area. Becoming a Junior Park Ranger is nothing to sneeze at. It is a great way for your kids to learn and explore nature and history. It is a nice way to learn and you receive really neat patches and swag sometimes. It is a really neat program that the National Parks and State Parks Service have to get kids fired up about their favorite parks. I for one think that the Garden of the Gods area is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The big sandstone monuments are so beautiful and if you go look up and you might actually see two kissing camels sitting on top of one of the huge columns. They are not real camels but the way that nature made the rock it looks like two camels kissing. Naturalist get creative with some of their formations. So there you have it all the patches I have from my travels across Texas, Arkansas, and Colorado. I will be going to Colorado very soon and I have a feeling I will be buying some more cool patches from some new areas. I will be making a blog post all about the adventure to Colorado in a few weeks time. We won’t leave until the end of June or so but there is much to plan for there is a lot to see in that wonderful state. A 7-Day Southern California Road Trip Itinerary

I’ve been on many road trips around the US over the years. It’s by far my favorite way to explore the country.

One state in particular is perfect for road-tripping: California.

Occupying much of the West Coast, California is home to almost 40 million people. Here you find high mountains, giant trees, deserts, valleys, stunning beaches, and vibrant cities. It’s its own little country in some ways.

Since California is so big, I’m going to do a series of posts that cover road trips in the state as it’s better to focus on smaller areas so you can really soak up and enjoy each destination. In travel, less is more.

To kick off the series, here is a one-week itinerary for Southern California:  

Days 1–2: Los Angeles

Start in Los Angeles, a city I’ve come to love. It’s not a city for tourists. Everything is spread out, you need a car, and the traffic makes getting around a pain. But, if you can enjoy its slow pace, diverse food and drink scene, and hikes, you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to live there. You visit LA like how you would spend your Saturday.

The city has a lot to do. Here are some of my personal favorite activities:

Stroll down Hollywood Boulevard – Don’t miss the Walk of Fame (where celebrities have their names engraved in the sidewalk) and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (featuring celebrities’ handprints and footprints).

Visit LACMA – With over 150,000 works, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the western USA. They have collections from pretty much every era throughout history and every region of the world. Admission is $25 USD.

Hike to the Hollywood Sign – While you can snap pictures of the sign from pretty much anywhere in the city, it’s also possible to hike up to the sign itself to take in the view. The three trails (from easiest to hardest) are the Mt. Hollywood Trail, the Brush Canyon Trail, and the Cahuenga Peak Trail.

Browse The Last Bookstore – This is one of my favorite bookstores in the world. It sells books and records, has art displays, and features a cool upstairs area too with cheap books. Browse the shelves, grab a coffee, and buy a book!

Hit the beach – There are a lot of awesome beaches in and around Los Angeles. Some of the best are: Venice Beach, Carbon Beach, Santa Monica State Beach, Huntington City Beach, and El Matador.

Visit the Getty Museum – Opened in 1997 as part of the massive Getty Center, this museum has a diverse collection of paintings, manuscripts, drawings, and other artwork from the eighth century to present day. Admission is free.

Go hiking – LA has a lot of hiking trails so it’s easy to connect with nature. Some worth checking out are the Charlie Turner Trail (90 minutes), Baldwin Hills (30 minutes), Runyon Canyon (45 minutes), Portuguese Bend Reserve (3 hours), and Echo Mountain (3–3.5 hours).

See the Le Brea Tar Pits – These natural asphalt pits are located in Hancock Park and have existed for upwards of 50,000 years. Tons of fossils, preserved for centuries, have been found in them. The museum has lots of interesting information about the pits and how they came to be.

Los Angeles also has countless food options. Some places I love are Musso & Frank Grill, Dan Tana’s, Meals by Genet, The Butcher’s Daughter, Sugarfish, and Thai Pepper.

Where to Stay

Banana Bungalow Hollywood – A chill, laid-back hostel that’s super social and organizes lots of activities.

Freehand Los Angeles – This hostel/hotel features designer rooms with comfortable beds, a rooftop pool and bar with amazing views of the city, a lobby bar, a restaurant, and even a fitness center.

Days 2–3: San Diego

Two hours down the coast is San Diego. It’s a popular city for sure but not as popular as the others. Personally, after LA, it’s my second favorite spot in the state! It’s easier to navigate, cheaper, has amazing weather, awesome beaches, and plenty of great bars and restaurants. Spend two nights here.

Here are some things to do during your visit:

Visit the USS Midway Museum – This aircraft carrier was the largest ship in the world until 1955. It saw action in numerous conflicts before being decommissioned in 1992 and turned into a museum. You can explore the flight deck as well as many of the rooms below.

Have fun at Belmont Park – This kitschy amusement park is right next to the ocean and perfect for some cheesy fun. It has a few classic rides as well as games and lots of greasy (and delicious) food and snacks.

Go surfing – Whether you’re a veteran or a newbie, grab a board and hit the waves. There’s some awesome surfing here. You can usually rent a board for around $30 USD a day. 90-minute lessons cost around $70 USD.

Visit the San Diego Zoo – Located in Balboa Park and with over 3,500 animals and 700,000 plant species, the San Diego Zoo is a massive, 1,800-acre park where you could easily spend an entire day. It’s one of the best zoos in the country and a great choice for anyone traveling with kids.

Explore Balboa Park – This is one of the oldest recreational parks in the US. In addition to the zoo, there are dozens of museums, as well as gardens, walking paths, sports fields, stadiums, theatres, and more. It’s a massive cultural center and green space with a ton to see and do.

Enjoy Pacific Beach – Head to Pacific Beach if you want to soak up the sun, surf, or go for a swim. The area is also known for its nightlife and offers lots of bars, clubs, and restaurants too.

Go whale watching – Between December and April, California gray whales migrate from Alaska to Mexico. They can grow up to 49 feet long and are incredible to see up close. Tours usually cost around $35 USD.

Hike Point Loma – This peninsula is where Europeans first arrived in California. You can walk out to the tip and enjoy the sweeping views of the ocean, visit the old lighthouse (built in 1855), and watch locals climb the cliffs of Osprey Point.

Where to Stay

HI San Diego – This hostel organizes tons of events and tours, includes free breakfast, and has a big kitchen so you can cook your own food to save money.

ITH Adventure Hostel – This eco-hostel has a vegetable garden (and gives free veggies to guests), a recycling and compost program, and even backyard chickens. There is lots of outdoor common space to relax in too.

Days 3–5: Joshua Tree National Park

Sandwiched between the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert, Joshua Tree National Park offers some of the most incredible landscapes in the country. Swaths of cacti and towering boulders dot the arid panorama, all peppered by the famous Joshua trees and their distinct twisting trunks and branches.

It’s an otherworldly place, a Martian landscape perfect for hiking, camping, and escaping the busy cities along California’s coast. There are countless trails to enjoy, ranging from short and easy to multiday challenges. Some suggestions:

Ryan Mountain – A steep 3-mile hike offering some incredible views.

Wall Street Mill – An easy 2.8-mile hike that leads to an old mill used to refine ore during from gold mining.

Split Rock Loop – A quiet 2-mile hike with lots of neat rock formations.

Barker Dam Trail – A 1.1-mile loop offering a chance to see rabbits, bighorn sheep, and all kinds of birds.

The visitor center has more information and trail maps. It’s only $30 USD for a seven-day vehicle pass, which is good for multiple entries in case you stay outside the park itself. The park is three hours from San Diego.

Where to Stay Airbnb is the best option here if you don’t have your own camping gear, although there are also glamping and more rustic options around the area too.  

Days 5–7: Sequoia National Park & Kings Canyon National Park

Start early and head to Sequoia National Park. It’s a long drive from Joshua Tree (it takes about 4-6 hours to get there).

The park itself is comprised of towering redwood and Sequoia trees, some of the biggest trees in the world. I’m talking trees so thick you can drive a car though them and so tall that you can’t see their crown!

Start things off by visiting the Giant Forest Museum to learn about the geography, history, and importance of the park. Afterward, walk the Big Trees Trail, a short loop that will get you in and amongst the trees. It also has the largest single-stem tree in the world, General Sherman!

For a sweeping view of the forest, hike up Moro Rock. Standing 250 feet tall, it’s a massive granite dome that juts out of the surrounding hills and forest. Stairs and a viewpoint were built into the rock itself so you can climb to the top safely and enjoy the magnificent vista.

While you’re here, visit nearby Kings Canyon National Park, a mountainous park with beautiful lakes, valleys to hike, and spectacular views. It’s also where you can see “General Grant” (the third largest tree in the world). For a scenic drive, cruise the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, a narrow road along the side of a mountain that offers more picturesque views of the rugged landscape.

Where to Stay There are lots of places to camp here, both inside and outside of the parks. However, if camping isn’t your thing (it’s not really mine), there are plenty of lodges and hotels in the area. You can find them via Booking.com.  

Day 7: Head back to Los Angeles

After that, it’s back to LA. It’s only a 3.5-hour drive, so if you’re not in a hurry, enjoy the desert views and stop along the way if you see anything that piques your interest.

California is a huge state with unlimited road-tripping potential. And, while there are a million different routes you could take for a seven-day trip, I think this itinerary covers some of the best of SoCal.

5 Beautiful Military Memorials in the US

Veterans’ Day is a time to honor our country’s brave + selfless individuals who served in the United States Armed Forces, protecting the rights and freedoms of our beautiful country. We compiled a list of 5 of the most beautiful (+ lesser known) memorials to reflect + honor those who have protected America!

Located near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall, this war memorial commemorates the sacrifices of 5.8 million Americans who served + fought in the Korean War. Often considered to be the “forgotten war”, the Korean War Veterans Memorial fights to give recognition by incorporating a mural wall displaying 2,400 photographs of the Korean War, a Pool of Remembrance, and a United Nations Wall, listing the 22 nations that contributed troops in the war.

Most notably, the Korean War Veterans Memorial displays 19 stainless steel statues standing 7 feet tall, sculpted to represent “an ethnic cross section of America”. The lifelike statues look as if their ponchos are blowing in the Korean wind, separated by granite strips, modeled to represented Korean rice paddies.

Formally known as the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, the USS Arizona Memorial commemorates + honors the service people who lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor which subsequently caused the entry of the United States into WWII. The monument preserves + retells the stories surrounding the war in the Pacific, spanning the experience of military personnel to the internment of Japanese Americans.

Submerged under 40 feet of water, the USS Arizona remains where she fell on December 7, 1941. Today, the memorial is built on top of the original ship to memorialize the 2,341 sailors, soldiers, + marines who died because of the bombing.

This monument stands to commemorate the arrival of George Washington + his Continental Army into Valley Forge, Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. Valley Forge functioned as the third of eight military encampments for the Continental Army’s main body. Modeled off of the Triumphal Arch of Titus in Rome (81 AD) which honors Emperor Titus’ capture of Jerusalem, the arch pays national tribute to George Washington in classical fashion.

Sitting atop a hill in Valley Forge, the monument overlooks the 3,500 acres of protected land of the original encampment site. George Washington and his Army remained here for six months in 1777 and it is estimated that 1,700 to 2,000 soldiers died from disease + malnutrition.

Located just north of the Reflecting Pool in the National Mall, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial commemorates the 265,000 American women who served in Vietnam as nurses, physicians, air traffic controllers, communication specialists, and intelligence officers.

The monument depicts three uniformed women caring for a fallen soldier + serves as a reminder of the importance of women in conflict. The 2,000 pound bronze structure stands 15 feet tall and is located amid a grove of trees across from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

This museum + memorial located in Kansas City, Missouri is dedicated to the preservation of artifacts, photos, and the memory of those who fought + died in the first World War. In 1919, the Liberty Memorial Association (LMA) + the citizens of Kansas City raised $2.5 million in just 10 days (equivalent to raising $34 million today) to build this memorial. It wasn’t until 2004 that is was designated as the country’s official World War I museum, and, only in 2014, did Congress recognize the museum and memorial as the National World War I Museum and Memorial.

The memorial is constructed in classical Egyptian-Revival style as an obelisk, was completed in 1926, and was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in front of a crowd of more than 150,000 people.
