Bobby joined the Navy V-12 program at just 17, he later served as a seaman apprentice on the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, named after his late brother. On May 30, 1946 he received his honorable discharge. For his service in the Navy, Bobby was eligible for the American Campaign Medal and the World War ll Victory Medal.
