Day 2: AU get me out of here - places to go when canon is complicated
It’s Day 2 for @roswellnewmexicocreate, time to celebrate those stories that I turn to when I can’t deal with canon, or when I don’t have the emotional energy to untangle all the emotions I have for what’s going on in canon. Alternative universes, the safe harbor for us. Below are a mix of rewrites of canon, remixes of canon, or out right not even set in Roswell- to fill every type distance you want from canon- from near to far.
and the howl of the desert carries me home by @christchex/ @michaels-blackhat (4,334) Alex runs into the desert to escape from his father with his guitar clutched to his chest. He plans to spend one last night playing before his father destroys it. Instead, he meets a cute boy with flowers in his curly hair and a lizard on his shoulder. He exchanges a song for a smile.
why i like it: I love everything about this story. Michael is totally a disney princess, and what a lovely way to save him from foster homes, but have him run away to the desert and use his alien powers to build his own little protective world. Looping in Nora’s plant powers like that, giving Michael a little animal friend, I love it all, but the show stealer is Alex Manes, playing music to coax the mystery boy out. It’s just incredibly soft.
Heartbeat series by @adiwriting (133,000 - in progress) During the lost decade, Alex gets Michael pregnant and Michael doesn't see or hear from him again for the next four and a half years. When Alex comes back to town, he discovers he has a daughter with Michael and they all have to figure out how to be a family.
why i like it: it has it all, installments with angst, installments with fluff, I can find whatever mood I am in by just pouring over this incredible series. I really don’t even like mpreg, but in RNM, with aliens it seems a little more probable to me and bless Britt, she goes light on the details but heavy on the kid aspect of it. I absolutely love Alex in this story, he’s richly characterized as a man who is trying hard while wandering unfamiliar territory like aliens, like being a dad, like being Michael’s boyfriend, and he doesn’t always get it right, but he’s loved regardless.
tonight we are young @skinsharpenedteeth (8,137) Alex and Michael ditch the Evans' New Years Eve party to find their own fun and Alex gets his New Years kiss...(the underage tag is because they're both 17 in this.)
why i like it: I’m a sucker for teen!Malex, especially stories that take place before the shed. I love this little AU where Alex is thinking about making a move, but hasn’t yet. They are both adorable nervous babies, this feels very much how a softer teen!Malex first time would go. Perfectly characterized here, you can just feel the hopeful vibes they have at 17. I like to believe nothing bad ever happens to them again.
you shift on a gear (it’s been a long year) by @backinmybodymp3 (28, 362) “Good morning,” Michael says. “What the hell did you do?” Alex asks, exasperated. (or: There were times, in some of the lower moments of the past however-many-days it’s been, where Michael had thought about what it might’ve been like to share this time loop with someone. He never imagined— well, he never imagined it’d be Alex.)
why i like it: I love time-loop stories! And this is just superb. The friendship dynamics of everyone involved, the Liz/Max wedding, Michael being a good brother, Michael trying so hard to keep this bullshit from dragging Alex in and then Alex being his usual reckless self when it comes to Michael, I absolutely dig this canon-divergent au. you can feel how much the author cares about everyone on the show in this story, and they really nail the Malex dynamic. This story came along just as season 3 did and it’s a true antidote to the malex drought on screen.
the library by @arielana (9,657)  Alex had stopped too far away to hear exactly what they were saying, but their voices did carry over to where he was standing. The guy’s drawl had a melody to it that was vaguely familiar, but much deeper than the voice it reminded Alex of. God, that and the hair really brought some memories back.  Just as Alex told himself to stop secretly staring like a creep and walk over there, he turned slightly so that Alex got a glimpse of the side of his face.  Fuck!  Fuck, fuck, fuck! Twelve years ago Alex left Roswell to join the Air Force, nursing a broken heart and promising to never return. When work brings him back to New Mexico he runs into someone he’d been sure he’d never see again.
why i like it: the first kiss in the UFO emporium was groundbreaking, but I have to admit, I love stories that explore the almost-happened, where Malex reconnect as adults without the shadow of Jesse’s attack. I love how sharp Alex is in this story, he has all these walls as an adult built from that first rejection, but then he’s so completely unprepared to reconnect with Michael again. The clownery in this story by both of them is perfect! I also totally love Forrest as a gay best friend for Alex, trying to wingman Alex, that cracked me up.
stellar light based life by @jocarthage (30,651) It’s not a memory if it’s something you see every day. It’s a trigger and it’s not one Alex wants to ever let go of.Alex saw Michael disappear into a blinding blue light, soft 17-year-old body pulled back into some kind of impossible vortex -- one hand, outstretched.
why i like it: another submission from 2020 RNM Big Bang, this story just wrecked me. I can’t even really put into words about how it hooked me and basically lives in my head now to the point I often mumble the first line to myself. Anyway, this AU takes a right turn at the shed attack, and goes full force scifi and tragic separation, I love it. In so many ways it reshapes Alex’s life but the core of who he is never changes, there’s so many great science geekery details about Michael’s planet and the astronaut journey that Alex takes, plus SANDERS... anyway, this is a fandom classic for me.
Crossed Wires by @beautifulcheat, @ladynox (15,351) Michael's been kicked off more than one Starfleet posting. So when he learned he was reassigned to the USS Roswell, he decided that he would keep his head down and behave. This decision is immediately thwarted when he meets her hot Vulcan captain. This might be the first time Michael got kicked off a posting for flirting with a captain.
why i like it: Star Trek AU? I’m pretty easy. Seeing elements of Kirk and Spock’s tragic backstory blended into genius mechanic Michael Guerin and ice prince Alex Manes was amazing. I love how it’s serving with his family that brings Michael to the Enterprise, his bond with Max and Isobel was chef’s kiss good. The blend of Michael’s powers and Alex’s biology - I loved the balance even if it came with its own misunderstandings, but hey, this time it was cultural! lol
I’m still here by @vague-shadows @pippsmcgee  (35,928) Treasure Planet AU in which Michael is the gifted young delinquent who found a treasure map, and Alex is a space pirate pawn in his Father's obsession with riches and legacy.
why i like it: I’ve never seen Treasure Planet, but I didn’t need to thoroughly enjoy this AU. This was the perfect mix of angst and sci-fi adventure, where the authors managed to make the shed even more horrifying. Jesse Manes is the absolute worst in this story, the levels of obsession he goes to find a treasure, and then Michael on his own collision course - the ability to write tense action is a gift, and it’s on display in this story. Cyborg!Alex took up a place in my heart and still lives there, where he only gets the nicest things.
If you like any of these recs, please leave a comment on the story or a kudo- a  ‘this was awesome’ is enough to propel an author into the stratosphere with happiness, so don’t worry about coming up with a unique, never before shared insight- sometimes a keyboard smash and emoji makes all  the difference!

Captain Pike's ready room aboard USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is "indigenous and cowboy themed", decorated with Navajo artwork, pottery, glass, rug, Frederic Remington horse sculptures, sofa and lobster chairs/recliners, wooden conference table from Pike’s childhood that had been hit by lightning, and a screen of the starry sky above Mojave desert.
Tamara Deverell, production designer: "When we decided we were going to do the ready room for Captain Pike I, of course, watched "The Cage" and went back to TOS and looked a lot at the character. We talked a lot to the writers as well about what his backstory is, what his history was, where he is from in Mojave, what he collected and what he brought with him. He brought stuff. We had stuff from New Mexico, from Mojave, from Arizona and we brought all of that in.
He had a table that he brought in that was his table from childhood that had been hit by lightning. So, there was a whole backstory and richness and the other aspect was that he was a warm character who wanted to welcome people. He didn't want a cold space. He wanted people to come in, so we had a sitting area. We made a bigger space and place where you could have a meeting.
So, it wasn't just his ready room. It is a place that you can imagine him falling asleep. Having some Cheese-Its and falling asleep watching his iPad. We really wanted that comfortable vibe. He was a cowboy, so we put in Remington sculpture, Navajo artwork and pottery. We brought in all these things that were Pike, his welcoming warm, cozy world." - Trekmovie.com interview, Feb 11 2019

Six  (status: hiatus; malex)
Summary: Michael had known it was stupid to go through Albuquerque. Big cities were always full of Infected, which are bad sure, but also people which are the absolute worst. Michael would take a raving horde of zombies hungry for human flesh over living and breathing people any day. But cutting through Albuquerque was the fastest path to Roswell. Michael didn’t want to go around. He’d been separated from his siblings long enough.
Co-authored with @beautifulcheat
The Great New Mexico Fake-Off  & Petit Four (status: complete; malexa; background forlex & echo)
Fake-Off Summary: Michael had tons of secrets. Sex secrets, murder secrets, alien secrets… they defined him. Most of them, he hated keeping. There was one secret, however, that he was determined to take to the grave. Or Michael learns to bake. Or cakes are a metaphor for Michael's love.
P4 Summary: While Michael attempts to hide his new baking habit, life in Roswell continues and the people around him have some things to say about all the cakes that are popping up.
Note: Petit Four are a series of short companion/background pieces to The Great New Mexico Fake-Off. They are meant to be read in tandem with Fake-Off.
Art by the fantastic Lychee Jelly (spoilers for chapter 4)
cause you're the one who resonates (status: complete; malexa)
Michael and Alex were so handsome together, so soft and effortlessly intimate. Maria couldn't help but imagine how nice it would be settled between them, warm and safe... It's time to go, Maria thinks. Alex disagrees.
For RNM after Dark
Crossed Wires (status: complete; malex)
Summary: Michael's been kicked off more than one Starfleet posting. So when he was reassigned to the USS Roswell, he decided to keep his head down and behave. This decision is immediately thwarted when he meets her hot Vulcan captain. This might be the first time Michael got kicked off a posting for flirting with a captain.

Dealing with Dragons (status: complete; miluca)
Summary: In which a rebel princess meets a recalcitrant dragon
Note: Part 1 of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles
Milestones (status: hiatus; malexa, background echo)
Summary: Maria, Michael and Alex have been in a v poly relationship for years. Peacefully cohabiting together. That peace is upended when Maria realizes she's pregnant.
The Truth Is Right Here  (status: ongoing; eventual malexa, background Kyliz, endgame kaliz)
Summary: Maria Deluca and Alex Manes had been partners, both in the X-Files department and in marriage, for years. They each had their own reasons to search for the truth, and it just made sense to do it together. Michael Guerin was just a con trying to keep his head down, serve his time, and not attract the wrong type of attention. He definitely had not bargained on being loaned out to a couple of alien hunters.

SETH COLE. 32. First Mate for the Cayuga Lake State Park. Salt of the Earth.
Full Name: Seth Cole
Age: 32
Birthday: April 28, 1990
Nationality: American
Occupation: First Officer/First Mate for the Cayuga Lake State Park
Gender: Cisgender Male
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual (Strong Preference to Females)
Positive Traits: Adroit, Consistent, Decisive
Negative Traits: Single-Minded, Selective, Idealistic
FAMILY: The Cole family are the Salt of the Earth type: they work hard rather than work smart. They have a very modest house in a very modest plot of land out near the outskirts of town. Seth’s father was military-turned-fisher (almost the same as he would be) while his mother was a seamstress who had her small store downtown until recently. There’s food in the table, just enough. It’s a modest life, it’s a good life.
CHILDHOOD: Seth was born and raised in Ithaca– by its lake, by its woods, by its quiet. Everyone knew him and his family. He’s the fourth generation Cole to live there, and he wouldn’t be the last. He sees his childhood as normal, typical: he had his childhood friends who grew to be in the same group in high school. He played baseball – caught more foul balls and strikeouts in the outfield in his high school than anyone before him. It’s uneventful, he thinks. For him, the highlight of those days was that time he got his license and he and his younger brother drove from Ithaca to New Mexico for the summer.
YOUNG ADULTHOOD: He was only in college for a semester, taking up BS Biology, before he dropped out. College is not for everyone, and he’s part of that “not everyone.” He tried, of course he did – his ma wanted him to, and so he did – but it just wouldn’t fit. On his last week of that semester, he went down to the Navy’s recruitment office, signed up, and left Ithaca five months after.
MILITARY: He served – just has his father, just as his brother, just as his grandfather, and almost all the men in their family before him. He enlisted in the Navy at age 19, and would only get out 7 years after. His time in the military rooted him to himself even more. He served in the US Navy Pacific Fleet, rose the ranks slow as molasses (as everyone did.) By the time he got out, he was a Petty Officer First Class aboard the USS Chaffee. He would have served longer, but he fell in love.
MARRIAGE: Seth has always been a romantic, through and through. His mother dotted him, his father guided him. When he was younger, they told him to be careful because he wore his heart on his sleeve: it’s going to be broken so many times before he meets the one, before he meets his wife (wanted connection). Seth was on furlough when he met his wife. It was a slow burn: he knew more of how to command men and take orders than to woo anyone. The friendship came easy after: they would talk for hours, laughed and teased.  Still, on that day, when he got home to his mother, Seth told ma that he’s found the one. Due to Seth’s idealistic nature and commitment to the Navy, their relationship progressed slowly and… very traditionally. A year after Seth retired from the military, his wife and Seth got married on a warm, early July morning, and have been happily married since. He has been blessed: it’s a modest life, it’s a good life.
OCCUPATION: Right after Seth got out of the military, he was offered to join the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic in Cayuga Lake. A former Navy sergeant he had served with when he was younger referred him. He’s always loved the lake. His father was also a fisherman, and he knew how to earn his keep. He’s been working at Cayuga Lake for almost 6 years now. Whenever people ask what his job is, he would always humbly say he’s just someone who works at the lake. In truth, he is the first mate of a 7-man strong ranger vessel, with a promotion to be a captain in the horizons.
CURRENT ARC: Seth and his wife have been married for almost 5 years now. He’s very much in love with her still (and will always be), but when Seth married his wife, he had a picture of a family together in mind. Six years of marriage and still childless. Although they try (and enjoy trying), it’s been starting to weigh in on Seth. He’s 32 years old now, and his ideal image of a family has yet to be realized.
PERSONALITY: Seth is an idealist and a dreamer. Once he sets his mind on a goal or a dream, he finds that it is his responsibility to himself to make it into reality. When he was younger, he promised his ma and pa that he’ll be with them ‘til they’re old and take care of them, give them grandchildren and name one of them after his maternal grandfather. That’s been his dream since he was 12 and he’s still working on it consistently. He is responsible through and through, and this is not just the product of a decade in the military, it is the core of a man who understands that commitment and consistency are not the be taken lightly.
Seth is scared of small dogs, lma0. He’s deathly scared of Pomeranian
Seth had a twin who was a stillborn. His name was Abek. Together with his younger brother, their parents named them Cain, Abel, and Seth – after the sons of Adam and Eve. Neither of his parents are religious.
Climate change is a huge and personal issue for Seth. He has seen its effects in the firsthand. As such, whenever possible, he prefers to take public transportation or just walk.
SUMMARY: Seth is an Ithaca Local Man who rides a boat in the lake for a living. Hahahaha

Well to put how big Texas is in perspective… and I’m using miles here:
It is closer for me to go to Cloudcroft, New Mexico on a vacation than Dallas, Texas.
About 50 miles…. And that still is longer than to the other place I’d visit in New Mexico.
Also looking to be cheaper as one place I want to go - the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo… is $8 bucks just museum, $11 if I wanted to go to planetarium too.
For comparison - the tour of the USS Lexington - which I love doing and will do again in a heartbeat: $17.
White Sands itself is a bit too high, but I can go there up to its gift shop. Plus… I’d rather not go there by myself as it’s essentially a desert.
But yeah… that’s my next trip, coming soon and masks won’t be too bad of still in play (currently indoors unless eating/drinking, but lifting by March 4)

Imagine If You Will...
An AU where the Avengers and co. are the crew of a Starfleet ship and go around causing absolute mayhem.
Seriously, think about it.
Captain Steven Grant Rogers of the USS Avenger, one of the youngest in the fleet, especially to command the Flagship of the entire fleet. Commander Sam Wilson as his First Officer and confidant. Commander Anthony Stark as the Chief Engineer, a former billionaire playboy and heir to a tech empire who joined the fleet to flip his dad the finger and found true purpose among his comrades.
Commander Bruce Banner as the mild mannered Chief Science Officer with hidden temper that got him thrown off more ships then he could count.  Dr. Stephen Strange as the CMO who was far too good at keeping people in the infirmary and lacked bedside manner. Lt. Commander Natasha Romanoff and Commander Clint Barton as a fearsome duo as the communications officer and pilot respectively, with Lt. Commander Jane Foster, an astrophysicist Bruce and Tony poached from a New Mexico lab.
Along with Jane came Darcy Lewis, the ships counselor/pseudo scientist wrangler. Steve’s never been happier now that the lab explosions have dropped by forty percent. And last but not least was Thor Odinson, the Chief Security Officer picked up from Asgard after Odin kicked him out. Steve and Sam met him on an away mission and adopted him into the crew.
And not just them either.
Scott Lang got thrown onto the ship for probation and the Avenger and her crew gave him the space to grow into an actual adult, he even became the 2IC of the engineering section and promoted to Lt. Commander. He, Tony, Jane and Bruce frequently make Steve and Darcy almost scream with rage a lot. Cassie now has a permanent guest room on the ship and Natasha keeps teaching her bad habits. He and Lt. Commander Hope van Dyne have a will-they-won’t-they thing going on and there are several bets made on it.
Ensign Peter Parker and Ensign Harley Keener were the babies of the ship, protected by all. The baby geniuses were the engineering sections’ pride and joy, Tony and Scott taking them under their wings. Harley got thrown out of his house and after Aunt May died, joining his parents and Uncle Ben, Peter joined the federation for lack of a better option. The two ensigns are best friends and mini terrors.
Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson are starfleet attorneys that are almost permanently assigned to bailing out the Avenger crew members when they get into trouble on shore leave
There’s so much potential. I can almost taste it. And I haven't even gotten started on the villains. Would anyone like to read a fic like this? Is there already a fic like this? If so please let me know!

USA assists Britain and occupied Europe against the FASCIST regimes of Hitler’s Nazis and Mussolini in Italy and fucks off until the Attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941. “Oh, THIS shit again?” asks Europe. “Showing up late YET AGAIN, but sure; hey, USA, take all the credit yet again. Seriously, fuck you guys. Thanks for the assist, but we could have saved millions of lives of you’d gotten of your fat asses YEARS ago!”

France still likes Libya and wouldn’t let US fighters through their airspace as they left German air bases. US pilots were a bit fatigued having to go around the long way and ‘accidentally’ bombed the French Embassy in Libya...
Tanker War (1987–1988) USA v. Iran because fuck them, that’s why. Iran & Iraq were duking it out and Iran thought shooting at US and allied shipping would be good fun. Despite fucking over our allies in Syria and being far too cozy with Putin and Kim Jong Un and other dictators, sympathizing with Nazis in the US and having the KKK in his blood, trumplefuckstick hasn’t actually pushed any “NEW” wars upon the US so far. Sure, we’re in a state of chaos and about to collapse into a failed nation-state into that “shithole country” everyone thinks can’t happen here.
The point is:
Tumblr media
Still don’t believe me? How about some non-war stuff...
How about EVERY act of white supremacist, KKK driven TERROR on non-whites since the Civil War ended or of the slave owners before them?
How about how our first real “police” in the US were bounty hunters looking for runaway slaves?
How about the Tulsa race massacre when white mobs attacked the black residents and business of the Greenwood District in Tulsa because the good people of Oklahoma didn’t want them “uppity niggers” to be doing as well or better than the white racist fucks were doing. That learned ‘em, didn’t it?
Let’s not forget the anti-union suppression! How about the  Herrin Massacre? During a United Mineworkers of America nationwide strike union miners shot at strikebreakers working at the mine. The mine's guards killed three union miners on June 21, and the miners killed 20 strikebreakers and guards on June 22.
What about the Hanapepe Massacre? During a strike of Filipino sugar workers, in an attempt to rescue two hostage strikebreakers police killed 16 strikers, while strikers killed four law enforcement members.
Kent State shootings: During a protest of the bombing of Cambodia at the University, members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire, killing four and injuring nine people.
Jackson State University shooting: After responding to the University due to a growing unrest, officers opened fire on a dorm building and two students (one from a local high school) were killed and twelve were injured.
There are more, to be sure, but Mr. Biden, you ARE correct in one particular field here- gun violence. Look at this list HERE. So many acts of mass shootings going WAY back before Columbine. What’s been done about this by you, the Democrats or Republicans of the piece-of-shit NRA? Fuck-all NOTHING.
Your truth, Mr. Biden- in this instance, gun violence literally achieves NOTHING.
