Only after a while I realized that barrel ones look like snapping turtles (Chelydridae). Very shape dudes, and they aren't related to Protoceratops.

#Archovember Day 27 - Udanoceratops tschizhovi

The leptoceratopsids are known for being small, pig-sized Late Cretaceous ceratopsians reminiscent of their more basal ancestors. But Udanoceratops tschizhovi took things to the next level, growing to the size of a hippopotamus, with the head and jaw strength to match. While assumed to be a herbivore like other ceratopsians, little is known about plants that grew in the Gobi Desert at the time of the Cretaceous, so it is unclear what types of plants it would have eaten. Its sharp beak, powerful jaws, and shearing/crushing teeth suggest a diet of relatively tough plants. Like other ceratopsians, particularly leptoceratopsians, Udanoceratops could have also opportunistically scavenged carcasses, nests, or even small mammals and young/weak dinosaurs for extra protein in its desert environment.

In the Djadochta Formation of Mongolia, Udanoceratops would have lived alongside the smaller, more numerous protoceratopsians Protoceratops and Bagaceratops. This was a mostly barren landscape, likely dotted by oases and arroyos that would have attracted smaller animals like nanhsiungchelyid land turtles, lizards like Gobiderma, frogs like Gobiates, crocodylomorphs like Artzosuchus, small mammals like Asiatherium and Mangasbaatar, and small theropods like the oviraptorosaur Avimimus. Udanoceratops was the largest animal around. Thus far, no predators large enough to take on an adult Udanoceratops have been found in its locality. The dromaeosaur Velociraptor could have snatched a baby Udanoceratops when the opportunity arose, but it would then risk the ire of this giant desert hippo with a staple remover for a head.

Just thought everyone needed to know about the stupidest looking dinosaur ever

Udanoceratops, a dinosaur with only a complete skull but looks absolutely stupid.

Its head is absolutely MASSIVE and relative to other ceratopsian skulls uranoceratops couldnt have weighed that much so it basically just had a bobble head

Paleovember 2022, Udanoceratops!

Living in Late Cretaceous Mongolia, Udanoceratops is the largest of a group of characteristically small ceratopsians called leptoceratopsids, measuring about 13 feet long. While it's frill was quite short, it's lower jaw on the other hand is massively robust, pointing to a diet of especially tough vegetation and a wickedly powerful defense with such a huge bite force.

do you have a favorite herbi and carni dinosaur? (specific genus or family group)

Favourite carnivorous dinosaur is easy, Sinosauropteryx prima!

It's been my favourite dinosaur of all time for ages, because it represents such an incredible leap forward in our scientific understanding of dinosaurs! It was the first dinosaur described with fossilised feathers (that wasn't considered basically a bird already)!

If that wasn't enough, years later it's one of the only extinct dinosaurs whose colours are almost entirely known! It was an earthy red-brown, with white stripes on its tail and a black "bandit mask" on its face. So, basically an Early Cretaceous red panda.

As for herbivorous dinosaurs, I don't really have a definitive favourite. There's such a huge variety of them, but personally I am always very fond of ceratopsians and sauropods, which I think are just absolutely beautiful creatures.

Out of the ceratopsians I love the chasmosaurini, with their enormous frills and horns and such, and am specifically very fond of Anchiceratops for its apparently weirdly long neck.

But there's a bunch of ceratopsians that I really love, like Pentaceratops, Einiosaurus, Zuniceratops, Udanoceratops, and Styracosaurus.

As for sauropods, the ones I love to see the most are titanosaurs because I find their long upward-sloping backs and necks especially graceful, and it amazes me that The Largest Animals ever walk on land also held themselves with such poise and elegance.

One thing I notice going through my list of favourite dinosaurs, is how few of them I've actually drawn! Aside from Anchiceratops the art here isn't mine, and it's weird that I haven't drawn much of these guys who I find so beautiful to look at!

Also, feel free to add on to this with your own favourite dinosaurs! Can be carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, whatever!

Various Udanoceratops

I started drawing 'em on October 30. I had to draw something Halloween, and found this dinosaur. This early ceratopsian is a giant leptoceratopsid. Its large jaws fragments strikes imagination - skull looks like Jack O Lantern in flesh

These folks are striped with bright heads because they're huge and conspicuous. The feather coat from sparse bristles has been transformed into a mane along the spine because it looks much more authentic and even realistic. The rest of shagginess - on jaw and paws - is the transition form between the scales and (proto)feather. Many have a lower beak down the chin - this depicted not only in reconstructions, but I also noticed it in fossils of P. hellenikorhinus. It plays role of a lips and even beard (just like upper), and having a light color adds volume and old age at the same time.

For experiment i drew em in frontal. There is no picture/diagram on Internet where fossils can be viewed from other angles except profile. Anyway, I gave everyone binocular vision, because that’s basic thing for (small) Neoceratopsia. I use some 3D references and Protoceratops anatomy.

I drew these Udanoceratops earlier, and here they have slight frills that aren't wider than jugal/zygomatic/cheek horns.

Whelp we’ve got about a week and a half til November (aaaaaah), so I guess I’ll post this year’s Archovember list now!

It’s a bit dinosaur-heavy this time, but there are a lot of species I’d really like to try my hand at! Also, we have two leptoceratopsians and two Araripesuchus species. I thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast these species within the same month, so I hope it doesn’t get /too/ repetitive!

For new folks: this is my “Draw Dinovember” list that I expanded out to include other archosauriforms. I started doing this a few years ago to challenge myself to draw species I’ve never drawn before and/or ones that don’t get a lot of attention. Feel free to join in! One last note, and a warning I usually issue to new paleoartists: while looking for references for these species you’ll come across David Peters. His references tend to dominate search results when looking for less well-known species. They are also highly inaccurate, even the skeletals. Time for a quick big-brain thought

I know that I’ve made an entire hypothetical scenario for how a third PHP season would go last year, along with how the series itself hasn’t mentioned in any major announcements as of late, but what if this hypothetical third season had a major theme with its episodes?

As in, instead of using habitats as the themes, why not go with entire locales instead? Maybe this could be the show going back to some of its most famous settings before closing things out, but I feel like having future episodes focus on an entire location instead of a single biome in general could be an interesting way to deal with running out of compatible habitats. Hell, it could be a good way to not only introduce new species, but also bring back certain animals from past episodes. I know this is a little bit far fetched, but hear me out.

Nemegt (Basically the Nemegt Formation and the surrounding area)

Old Species- Tarbosaurus, Mononykus, Deinocheirus, Tarchia, Prenocephale, Barsboldia

New Species- Gallimimus, Udanoceratops, Saurolophus, Conchoraptor, Adasaurus, Brodavis
