❗️ Belgorod volunteer Alexander Demidenko, who helped Ukrainian refugees, died in a pre-trial detention center - “Like this” The death occurred on April 5. Demidenko was involved in a criminal case for illegal possession of weapons. The media also discussed an unconfirmed version of the case against Demidenko for treason. After being kidnapped by Kadyrov’s men at the Kolotilovka checkpoint in the fall of 2023, Demidenko was subjected to administrative arrest. During the transfer to the pre-trial detention center, traces of torture were recorded on Demidenko’s body, which the jailers called domestic injuries. Alexander Demidenko after the beating. Help a Ukrainian family!
When the war in Ukraine started my parents took in a Ukrainian family of four as well as an unaccompanied teenager into their home in Germany.
All five of them are now planning on going to Canada because they have family there. They got a visa, but have to pay for a medical examination to be able to stay in Canada once they arrive there (170€ per person).
We are also trying to raise a minimum amount of 3000€ for the plane tickets to Canada for all of them.
They are allowed to stay in Germany until the 30th of May.
Even the smallest amount of money is appreciated!

Adventures in Librarian-ing
One of the Ukrainian refugee students at the elementary school I work at came running up to me at library time today to excitedly show me that her parents had gotten her a little squishmallow for her for Valentine's.
She was clearly super thrilled about it so I made a huge deal over how cute it was and asked her if I could pet it. She was beaming and clearly very proud of her new toy the whole time.
It looked like this:

She was super shy at first because she didn't speak any English, so the fact she now speaks English enough to chat and came out of her shell is huge.

Western white men fetishizing Eastern women is an old issue, now some are literally happy because of genocidal war, hoping "they won't be single anymore" because of Ukrainian refugees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice how the man even says "girls" and not "women"? Well, see the next photo.

Reposting the screens because the person who originally posted them is a terf but this is fucking important and shouldn't be left to terfs.

Body of Ukrainian refugee found in Germany, her child missing
The body of a 27-year-old woman who had moved from Ukraine and lived in a refugee shelter has been found in Germany, Bild reports.
A passer-by found the body of a young woman on the banks of the Rhine in the town of Hockenheim. Investigators found out that the deceased woman was 27 years old and she lived in a refugee camp.
The German media reports:
On a popular hiking trail something terrible happened. On Thursday, a passer-by discovered a dead body here. The pedestrian was travelling between Herrenteich and Lüsshof at around 10:20 a.m. when he saw the shocking find at the NATO ramp (an emergency military crossing on rivers).
A month and a half ago, the woman gave birth to a daughter whose whereabouts are still unknown. The body of the deceased showed signs of violent death, the city’s police said. Her mother, who, according to the investigation, is the main witness to the murder, also lived with the Ukrainian woman, but they have not been able to find her yet.
About 60 police officers are investigating the case. Service dogs have been involved in the search, but so far the efforts of the law enforcers have not been successful.
According to various estimates, more than one million refugees from Ukraine live in Germany.

Transgender Ukrainians struggle to continue treatment
Tumblr media
CNN reports that many transgender Ukrainians within the country and abroad find it hard to get access to hormones and other types of treatment.
Eric, a 23-year-old transgender man from Ukraine, explains:
“The clinic had closed because of the danger of airstrikes. I had the testosterone, but no way of getting [it administered]. I didn’t have the needles and there were huge shortages of everything in pharmacies, even the most basic stuff, because obviously, during the war, there’s a big need for things like syringes.”
A lack of hormones
The Ukrainian transgender rights group Cohort says it has helped more than 1,500 people since the start of the war, assisting them to move to safer areas and helping them pay their bills, CNN writes. The NGO also works with shelters to make sure they have the basic supplies they need.
Getting access to hormones has become a major challenge. The war has interrupted supply chains.
Russian transphobic propaganda helps trans people in Ukraine
The Russian government has become increasingly homophobic and transphobic since the beginning of the war, blaming queer folks for waging a gender war against "traditional values".  This has become the normal excuse for fascist terror these days, it seems, on both sided of the Atlantic.
This has, ironically, helped the transgender cause in Ukraine, as support for queer people is now seen as part of an overall effort to protect humanistic and democratic European values in Ukraine. The discriminatory Russian rhetoric has pushed more Ukrainians to speak up.
Transgender Ukrainians abroad
More than 7.8 million Ukrainians have left the country. Some of them are trans.
CNN explains:
The rights of trans people are weaker in some European Union countries than they are in Ukraine. For example, the Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Hungary and Romania still require trans people to undergo sterilization if they want to change their gender – despite a 2017 ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, which found such laws violate Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. A bill seeking to overturn the requirement is currently making its way through the parliament in Finland.
Poland and Hungary, two countries that border Ukraine and have seen a large influx of refugees, have both seen a pushback against LGBTQ rights in recent years – so much so that the European Commission launched legal action against them over the issue in July 2021.
In a country like Norway, transgender refugees will find it non-problematic to get their real name and gender respected legally (including getting correct ID-cards), but they face the same problems as everyone else when it comes to getting access to hormones. A gender dysphoria diagnosis from Ukraine is not automatically accepted by all doctors.
According to a report by Transgender Europe, waiting times for an initial appointment with a specialist can stretch to years in several European Union countries, including Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden.
Transgender Ukrainians abroad need to get in touch with the local LGBTQA organizations, which – in many countries – have put in place extra measures aimed at helping queer refugees.
CNN has more.

Calling all Ukrainians of Tumblr...
I’m keen to get some of my Ukrainian students more engaged with and involved in Media Studies and Film Studies, but instead of assuming cultural benchmarks that British children grow up with are somehow universally likeable, I’m keen to find examples of music videos by popular Ukrainian artists as well as Ukrainian films, TV shows and other aspects of popular culture* (I’ve seen the first three seasons of Servant of the People and really enjoyed it, but my students were very young when it first came out and they haven’t seen it). Not only will it make things easier on those who are still working hard to improve their English, it’s good for their English classmates to learn to enjoy and appreciate things from cultures outside of their own.
If you have any recommendations please don’t hesitate to comment below or pop them in my ask box :)
*Some of the students are Russian-speakers, and would be equally happy with anything in Russian, if it’s far enough removed from recent events
