Arathian artisans are well-known throughout Rhesainia for their skills!
The MC hasn't spent a lot of time in the Empire, so their experience with the culture and its forms of dress and accessories, especially among the noble classes, isn't extensive.

Charon or Caronte, “one of keen gaze”, is a well-known figure of Greco-Roman theogony - He is the immortal ferryman taking the souls of the deceased across the river Styx. Some Greek authors painted Him to be a horserider in a cnoical hat and a tunic wielding a sword with a man-eating dog. Virgil and other Roman writers portrayed Him as riding a rusty boat through the troubling waters of Styx. Some later depictions of Him, especially those in Greece and Southern Italy, had Him portrayed as grey-skinned with serpent-draped arms, a tusked mouth, and holding a mallet. Sometimes depicted on His own, sometimes accompanied by Mercury, He is a very important being to encounter during one’s post-mortem journey.
Charon isn’t traditionally worshipped like other Gods are despite having roots going very far back into the Etruscan culture. There weren’t cults or temples devoted to Him, but we do know about a number of Charon-centered rituals and customs spread in the cultures that first described Him. Some of them aren’t well-known or spoken of, and I’d like to talk about them in this post. I will also mention possible offerings that could be made to honor Charon and His hard work as well as bond with Him if you ever wanted to.
Disclaimer: This post is not a guide of any kind but rather a source of information for those who might be wanting to get closer to Charon but are intimidated by Him for whatever reason you have or don’t know where to start.

The Underworld in Ancient Rome and Greece was not seen the way some moden day religions envision Hell as. Ancient people saw the Underworld as a continuation of life and thus had very peculiar ideas on what happens to the souls that cross the border of life and death. The Romans, for example, believed that both “good” and “bad” people go to the same place, the Underworld, and their further fate isn’t decided on the basis of their mortal choices through life, but rather on the basis of whether or not they are favored by the Gods.
Divine favor wasn’t the only thing guaranteeing the soul a good afterlife, as payment for Charon was just as important to give. The Romans and the Greeks traditionally used obols, the currency of the time, or Persian danake to pay the price of crossing the Styx. According to the findings in Etruria and Umbria, archaic civilizations used to bury the dead with pieces of metal, which was later replaced with coins. Some Ancient writers believed that metal, as something delivered from Earth, was able to connect the world of the living and the world of the dead.
The coins were placed on the eyes of the deceased or in their coffin at a later stage of history. If payment wasn’t made, the soul of the departed was believed to wander alongside the River for a hundred years before it would be allowed the crossing - that was something many Ancient authors believed. Some believed that those souls who do not cross Styx return as bloodthirsty ones until they’re buried. Lack of a proper burial was among the greatest offences one could carry out.
Some sources say that the family of the deceased would sometimes paint a door on the wall so the person has their own entrance into the Underworld. It’s also possible that the deceased were given water and bread to last them during the journey to the Underworld. That, alongside a decent burial, was thought to guarantee that the soul reaches the banks of Styx and crosses the River without trouble.
As for other interesting traditions, we know that the Romans dressed their deceased in white as the family and close ones wore gray or black. The Greeks placed what we currently know as gravestones on the newly made burial spots - these varied from being simple stones to very richly decorated statues and other monumental memorials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coins and food weren’t the only objects associated with the departure of the soul. Some of the objects that the Ancient people believed would be useful in the afterlife are:
Oil lamps or lanterns. These were believed to “enlighten” one’s afterlife and help them find their way after death.
Nails. While the function of the nails was traditionally protective, they were also believed to prevent the deceased from returning as ghosts.
Seven stars. Imagery of seven stars surrounding a crescent moon symbolized that “everything disappeas to return and shine again”.
Eagle. Eagles, Jupiter’s favorites, were believed to carry the souls to the sky.
Phoenix. Imagery of a phoenix, felix fenix - happy phoenix, was associated with rebirth as it rises from the ashes.
Peacock. Peacock feathers were placed in the hands of the deceased as its “many-eyed” tails were associated with reincarnation and rebirth.
The placement for these objects varied: some were placed in jars and kept near the body, some were located at the feet of the skeleton. Nails would be sometimes found between the femurs of the deceased person. Charon’s coins would be either placed on the eyes of the departed or in their mouth. Some of the coins found alongside Charon’s obols were even more valuable than the price of crossing itself, and we aren’t fully sure if these other coins were for Charon or for the deceased.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are also good offerings to make for Charon in case you want to build a connection with him. Some of these objects can be offered to him directly, and things inaccessible to you can be replaced: for example, lanterns can be replaced by candles and such. Aside from these objects and imagery, the deceased can also be honored by burning incense, and here are some scents commonly associated with the afterlife and the dead:
Black Storace
White Sandalwood
Benzoin Incense
Myrrh
Patchouli
Charon of course appreciates precious gems, as they are something that comes from the Earth’s depth, thus being connected to the Underworld. Some stones I believe He would like are:
Apache Tear
Pyrite
Smoky Quartz
Black Obsidian
Rhodonite
While herbs aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to Charon and the Underworld, I’d like to suggest some that have soothing and protective qualities as offerings for Charon. Historically, many Charon-centric rituals, as well as those that spoke on the passing of the soul over the border generally, had connection to different objects that were used for protection. So, there are some herbs:
Sage
Mugwort
Basil
Peppermint
Rosemary
Skullcap
Nettle
Lastly, while music wasn’t traditionally associated with Charon, there are some modern day hymns one can find that would be devoted to other Underworld Deities, so I believe it’s possible Charon would enjoy some music.
Playing music, whether it is you playing or a record, could be a way to bond with Charon and better understand one’s post-mortem journey. Picking songs that have a sort of a nostalgic, soothing, calm tune would be a good idea as you’d be somewhat close to understanding how souls feel when traversing through the Underworld.
You can as well give Charon unused jewelry, precious stones, coins, gold, and other objects that might have value for you even if they do not have a high monetary price, such as old possessions or precious personal items.
Speaking of rituals, there are some things you can do to feel or get closer to Charon aside from offerings and music:
Saging the house you are in might help you in a number of ways: as a method of soothing, cleansing, and reaching out to Charon in case you need to ask Him for a personal favor. Only do this for the sake of the deceased if it soothes you personally.
Ringing the bell could attract Charon’s attention as bells sometimes were told to be attached to His boat, ringing as it passed through the waters.
Bargaining with Charon in case you can’t provide the coins and instead asking if you could offer a different precious item until you can give out the obols could be a way of communicating wit him.

Note: Do not use any decor from this post. It was made by me, photos not mine. Be respectful as this post deals with real life post-mortem rituals.

NOVARA JAZZ 2022: GIUSEPPE CARDONI, “WORLD OF SOUND” DI DANIELE CAVALLANTI

I'm reading a book called Shameless Exploitation; In Pursuit of the Common Good that I got from a book fair which has to do with Salad Dressing.
Paul Newman and A.E. Hotchner are the writers and the subjects of the story and lemme recite my favorite excerpts so far;
• "Whenever I do something good, right away I've got to do something bad so I know I'm not going to pieces.- Paul to Joanne right after he fell out of the tree house, Beverly Hills, California, 1985" pg 13, chapter 2
• "Hotch: Uh-huh. And how do you see us in this restaurant? PL: Oh, I'd tend the bar and you'd be the Jolly Greeter. Hotch: Uh-huh, people are going to come from all over to be at the bar with this famous movie actor, sitting there with their martinis, taking close-ups with their Instamatics, clinking glasses with the superstar, that it? PL: Pretty picture, isn't it? Hotch: Uh-huh. Well, how about this picture? In comes a party of eight oystermen and their wives, all permed and perfumed for the occasion, a couple of rounds of martinis, then the eight oystermen go to the Jolly Greeter and say, "Where is the superstar bartender we have come all the way from Gloucester to clink a glass with?" Oh, says the Jolly Greeter, at the moment he's sunning himself, in between takes, on the beach at Bali-Bali. Sorry. Whereupon the eight oystermen, having come all the way from Gloucester with their permed and perfumed wives, kick the be-jesus out of the Jolly Greeter. PL: Well, Hotch, there's a price for everything." pages 16-17, chapter 3, about opening a restaurant
• " "Well, kid," said the Godfather behind the desk, "we'll spring for the olive oil and we split fifty-fifty, but we got to go with the Umbria name, not this-what'd you call it?" "Newman's Own." "No, you ain't." "I'll let you know." "What's to know? We got a deal." "I've got to talk to Newman." "Why?" "He's my partner." "Call him up." "I can't bother him now." "Why not?" "His doctor says he's dying." "Call him up." "Right! I've got his number in the car. I'll be right back." There are still track marks from the 'Vett's rubber, bearing indelible testimony to Hotch's frightened foot on the throttle." Page 22, chapter 4, Hotch is meeting with a mayonnaise bottler trying to get Newman's Own salad dressing bottled properly. Honestly, the entire Mayonnaise scene (as I'm calling it) is great but I'm not writing all that.
• Chapter 5 dishonorable mention to drunken horse guy. If you know you know.
Overall, the chapters are short, and the writing is a little clunky at times, but it's endearing so far as these men, an actor and his writer buddy, stumble haphazardly through getting this salad dressing biz off the ground.
Also Sawtooth Homestuck shares that name with A.E. Hotchner, who was sometimes called Sawtooth.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT CLARE OF MONTEFALCO (Saint Clare of the Cross) The Patron of Heart Diseases and Cardiovascular Problems Feast Day: August 17
In order to put simply, Clare was recognized as an Augustinian rather than a Franciscan.
Clare was born in Montefalco, in Umbria, likely in the year 1268. She was born into a well-to-do family, the daughter of Damiano and Iacopa Vengente. Her father, Damiano, had built a hermitage within the town of Montefalco. Clare's older sister Joan (Giovanna in Italian) and her friend Andreola lived as Franciscan tertiaries in that hermitage as part of the Secular Third Order of St. Francis. In 1274, when Clare was six years of age, the Bishop of Spoleto permitted Joan to receive more sisters, and it was at this time that Clare joined the Third Order of St. Francis (Secular), moving into the hermitage and adopting the Franciscan habit.
In 1278, the community had grown sufficiently large that they had to build a larger hermitage farther from town.
In 1290, Clare, her sister Joan, and their companions sought to enter the monastic life in a more strict sense, and they made application to the Bishop of Spoleto. As the Third Order of St. Francis (Regular) was not yet established, the bishop established their monastery adjacent to the church of Sant'Illuminata in Montefalco according to the Rule of St. Augustine. Clare made her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and became an Augustinian nun. Her sister Joan was elected as the first abbess, and their small hermitage (built and funded by their father) was dedicated as a monastery. On November 22, 1291, Joan died, after which Clare was elected abbess. She was initially reluctant to accept her position, but did so after the intervention of the Bishop of Spoleto.
1294 was a decisive year in Clare's spiritual life. During the celebration of the Epiphany, after making a general confession in front of all her fellow nuns, she fell into ecstasy and remained in that state for several weeks. Since she was unable even to eat during this period, the other nuns sustained Clare's life by feeding her sugar water. During this time, Clare reported having a vision in which she saw herself being judged in front of God.
Clare also reported having a vision of Jesus dressed as a poor traveler. She described his countenance as being overwhelmed by the weight of the cross and his body as showing signs of fatigue.
During the vision, Clare knelt in front of him, and whilst trying to stop him she asked, 'My Lord, where art Thou going?'
Jesus answered her: 'I have looked all over the world for a strong place where to plant this Cross firmly, and I have not found any.'
After she reached for the cross, making known her desire to help him carry it, He said to her: 'Clare, I have found a place for My cross here. I have finally found someone to whom I can trust Mine cross,' and he implanted it in her heart.
Clare took her belief in this vision seriously. The rest of her years were spent in pain and suffering, yet she continued to joyfully serve as abbess, teacher, mother and spiritual directress of her nuns. While Clare's reputation for holiness and wisdom attracted visitors to the Monastery of the Holy Cross, she proved to be worldly-wise and canny in the way she governed her monastery. She was careful not to disrupt the communal harmony and the necessary day-to-day management of the monastery's domestic affairs.
In 1303, Clare was able to build a church in Montefalco which would not only serve as a chapel for the nuns, but also as a church for the town. The first stone was blessed by the Bishop of Spoleto on June 24, and that day the church was dedicated to the Holy Cross (Santa Croce); the remnant portion of that small church comprises the frescoed Chapel of Santa Croce connected to the larger Santa Chiara in Montefalco.
Clare had served as abbess for sixteen years. By August 1308, she had become so ill that she was bedridden. On August 15, she asked to receive Extreme Unction, and on the next day she sent for her brother to come to the monastery. Clare made her last confession on August 17, and died at about 40 years of age in the convent on August 18.
Immediately following Clare's death her heart was removed from her body, and upon inspection it was reported that symbols of Christ's passion, a crucifix and a scourge, were found within her heart.
Other historians report that an 'autopsy' was conducted and a small crucifix was found in her heart and three gallstones were found in her gallbladder, which were taken as a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
The crucifix reportedly found within Clare's heart is about the size of a thumb. Christ's head leans slightly towards the right arm of the crucifix, and his body is white, except for the 'tiny aperture in the right side which is a livid reddish color.' The scourge and crown of thorns are apparently formed by whitish nerve fibers, and the three nails are formed of a dark fibrous tissue.
The body of Clare is now reduced to bones. A statue of her body is on display to pilgrims in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Clare in Montefalco in a glass sarcophagus; the bones are on display in the rear of the sarcophagus but can only be seen by nuns who have access to the rear of the crypt. Her heart is displayed for veneration at the same church.
The canonization process was initiated in 1328, but it was not until April 13, 1737, that Clare was beatified by Pope Clement XII. On December 8, 1881, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Leo XIII canonized Clare as Saint Clare of Montefalco at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome.

13 Best Things to do in Assisi, Italy
Things to do in Assisi
The ancient town of Assisi lies only a twenty-minute train ride from Umbria’s capital, Perugia. Known as the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi (one of Italy’s patron saints), it is an important pilgrimage site and home to some incredible religious buildings and festivals.
From the grand St. Francis Basilica, the eye-catcher of the town, to beautiful alleyways lined with traditional Italian shops, the lovely town draws in visitors from all over the world.
1. St. Francis Basilica
A trip to Assisi wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the St. Francis Basilica, a grand building that is unusually constructed out of two churches on top of one another. It’s the main thing to do in town and has one of the most mind-blowing interiors we’ve ever seen!
As you stroll through the town’s main street Via San Francesco, take a moment to admire the views of this impressive building. You can walk the wide walkway around the church and head inside to admire the brightly colored frescoes and stained glass windows.
The basilica dates back to 1228 when the building’s foundation stone was laid only two days after St. Francis was canonized as a saint. His remains lie buried in a tomb under the church (the lower basilica), which you can also visit.
Tumblr media
Please note that this is an active place of worship, so make sure to dress accordingly. Unfortunately, you can’t take any photos on the inside. Though this means it’ll be a nice surprise for your trip!
Entrance fee & Opening times: The lower basilica is open from 6 AM – 7 PM in the summer and closes at 6 PM in the winter. The upper basilica is open from 8:30 AM – 7 PM and closes at 6 PM in the winter. Entrance to the Basilica is free.
Tumblr media
2. Explore the Streets of Assisi
When you’re finished at the Basilica, take a small tuk-tuk through the narrow little streets of Assisi, getting lost in its labyrinth of beautiful alleyways. Spend some time on the vibrant squares, enjoying a delicious gelato or refreshing drink as you soak up the atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Via San Francesco is the road that connects the main square, Piazza Del Comune, with the impressive Basilica. Here, you’ll find many stone buildings with traditional Italian shops selling various foods and beautifully crafted souvenirs. Take your time as you wander through the picturesque streets, peeking into little side alleys and courtyards as you go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you’d like to learn more about the UNESCO medieval center of Assisi, consider joining a walking tour. Together with an experienced guide, you’ll peel back the layers of Assisi’s rich history. You can choose to join either a small group tour or a private walking tour for a more intimate experience.

3. Piazza del Comune
The large Piazza del Comune is the main square of Assisi and one of the most lively areas in town. It’s surrounded by a few important historical buildings, including the Temple of Minerva and the soaring Torre del Popolo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Temple of Minerva is the oldest building in town, dating back to the first century BC. You’ll easily recognize the building by its stout columns on the outside. Take a peek inside the complex, which now hosts a small church with a beautiful ornate altar.
Right next to the temple stands the Torre del Popolo tower, looming over the square. From up top, you’ll be rewarded with views over the town and its lush surroundings. Make sure to book a slot in advance (5 EUR/5.5 USD) if you want to get to the top, as only 20 people can climb the tower every hour.
Besides many monuments, there are also plenty of cute cafes that line the square. Enjoy a delicious coffee or gelato on a terrace in the sun, or sit on one of the public benches to soak up the atmosphere of the area.
Piazza del Comune also sees a number of events and festivals throughout the year, including the popular Calendimaggio festival in May. During these days, locals dress up in medieval costumes and reenact life in Assisi from this time. This is a great way to catch a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of Assisi, Italy!
Roman Forum
Located just a few steps from the buzzing Piazza del Comune lie the excavations of an ancient Roman Forum. Visitors often overlook this hidden gem, making it a great place to escape the crowds.
Explore ancient Roman history as you walk past the remains of a temple, cistern, and podium. Expect to spend about 30 minutes at the small archaeological site. Entrance costs 5 EUR (5.5 USD), and the forum is open daily from 10 AM – 5.30 PM.
4. Assisi Hot Air Balloon Ride
A hot air balloon ride is one of the most extraordinary things to do in Assisi! Wake up for sunrise, and float over green fields, vineyards, and charming cities like Assisi and Perugia. It’s a magical way to gain a birdseye view of the extraordinary landscapes of the region of Umbria.
5. Cathedral of San Rufino
While the Basilica is the biggest eye-catcher of Assisi, the town’s cathedral is also worth a visit. This 12th-century building is home to some stunning artwork and frescoes beautifully preserved inside the building. Though the intricate Romanesque facade of the San Rufino cathedral is also incredible to look at.
Located in the heart of Assisi’s historic center, it stands where previously the Roman Forum stood. Escape the hustle and bustle of the town’s busy streets, and delve into the cathedral’s historical stories and peaceful atmosphere. This is also supposedly where Italy’s patron saints Francis and Clare, as well as the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, were baptized.
6. Basilica di Santa Chiara
The Basilica di Santa Chiara, also known as the Basilica of St. Clare, is another incredible church and one of the best things to do in Assisi. This Gothic architectural marvel stands at the edge of the historic town, with views over the lush Umbrian countryside.
The church dates back hundreds of years and was built just a few years after the death of St. Clare, one of the first followers of St. Francis. She is most notably known as the founder of a religious order for women (the Order of Poor Ladies) in the Franciscan tradition. Take a look at the religious remains and the gorgeous details of the building. Or, bask in the warm sun as you look out over Assisi and its surroundings.
Entrance fee & Opening times: The basilica is free to visit and open daily from 6.30 AM – 12 PM and reopens between 2 – 6 PM. Note that, unfortunately, you can’t take photos of the inside of the church.
7. Oratory of San Francesco Piccolino.
Because of his fame, St. Francis often stands at the center of things to do in Assisi, Italy. About halfway up the street from Basilica di Santa Chiara, hidden between busy little cafes and souvenir shops, a small passageway leads to his oratory. The saint was born in this small chapel, which was just a stable in the Middle Ages. Take a peek inside when you stroll through this beautiful neighborhood, passing the decorated archway as you go. Here’s the location.
8. Rocca Maggiore
High on top of a hill overlooking the historic center of Assisi stands the grand Rocca Maggiore fortress. This incredible building is one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval fortresses, making it a must-do on your trip to Assisi. For over eight hundred years, it’s defended the town and the surrounding Tescio Valley from invading forces.
Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the town and countryside as you explore the fortress’ ramparts and tower. When you visit around sunset, you can see the impressive St. Francis Basilica from above, covered in beautiful orange light. On a clear day, you can even spot neighboring locations, Perugia and Spello, in the distance.
Tip: There’s also a small museum at the fortress where you can dive into the history of Assisi and its surroundings. The fortress is open from 10 AM – 8.30 PM, and guided tours are available if you’d like to learn more about the region’s past.
9. Assisi Viewpoint + Horses
Once you’ve explored everything in town, drive to a beautiful viewpoint that overlooks Assisi and the rest of Umbria. At the height of 1200 meters, this has to be one of the most fantastic views in the region. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun go down over the hills, mountains, vineyards, and medieval towns.
Watch as the limestone buildings of Assisi turn from their beautiful white into a soft orange. The moment the sun has set, the town sparkles with little street lights reflecting off the light-colored houses.
Best of all, if you travel to the top, you can find lots of wild horses roaming free across the lands (although be aware they’re not always there. Still, you might get lucky!). Here is the location of the viewpoint.
Tip: On your way down from the viewpoint, stop at the village of Collepino, where there was once a medieval castle. Nowadays, you’ll find a few towers, arches, and gateways still standing there. Plus, you’ll get to see more great views of the valley below!
10. Join a Winery Tour
Just like Tuscany, Umbria has fantastic wine! As you drive through the landscapes, you’ll pass many beautiful vineyards covering the region’s hills. The countryside around Assisi and Perugia has some incredible wines that you can try at one of the wineries offering excellent tours. Journey out of town to bask in the sun while you walk among stunning cypress trees and lush wine country.
We visited Lungarotti in Torgiano (they also have another winery in Montefalco), which is one of the most impressive wineries we’ve ever seen! Here, you’ll learn how grape turns into delicious wine, with amazing explanations from knowledgeable guides and winemakers. Lungarotti is the producer of the best red wine in Italy (2016), making this experience and tasting one of the best things to do in Assisi.
11. Visit the Carceri Hermitage
The Carceri Hermitage, or Eremo delle Carceri, is a peaceful retreat high up in the mountains above Assisi, known as St. Francis’ meditation place. Tucked between the green trees, this stone complex is made up of a few small chapels, a cloister, and St. Francis’ cave. It lies away from the hustle and bustle of the town, making it a beautiful place to visit for some tranquility.
Wander through the area, crossing the complex’ stone bridge and past the yellow-colored houses. The views from the site are incredible, offering a lookout over the rich Umbrian lands that stretch around Assisi. Getting to the hermitage takes about a 10-minute drive up a narrow winding road. However, you can also hike up, which takes about an hour of strenuous walking.
12. Basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli
Just outside of Assisi lies Santa Maria Degli Angeli, a little town with a grand basilica full of ornate decorations. It’s one of the largest churches in Italy, renowned for its beautifully rich frescoes that are made by some of the most famous artists in the country.
Inside, you’ll find beautiful artwork on display, carved and painted into the large walls and pillars. Take some time to admire all the details of this 16th-century building, including the little chapel (Porziuncola Museum) and the austere rooms of the friars (monks). This is also where saints Francis and Clare founded their Orders. The church is free to visit, but there’s a small fee to enter the museum.
13. Day Trips to Neighboring Towns
Umbria is dotted with many beautiful towns and historical cities located in the lush valleys of the region. Traveling through Italy by car is, therefore, one of the most rewarding experiences in the country. This way, you can travel at your own speed and visit hidden gems that lie further out in the countryside.
We recommend to rent a car in Italy through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here.
The city of Perugia is the capital of Umbria and an absolute must-visit on your trip to the region. It’s a lively city with a vibrant student population and a bustling atmosphere. Plus, there are lots of great restaurants and bars for an aperitif.
It’s full of stories, incredible architecture, and excellent historical sites. Additionally, due to its location atop a hill, you’ll always have the best views over the beautiful green surroundings. From visiting grand gothic buildings and defensive walls to walking past colorful houses and trying regional delicacies, there’s so much to do in this Italian city.
Another beautiful hilltop town nestled in the region of Umbria is Spello. This gorgeous stone town is known as the ‘town of flowers’ and is famous throughout the country!
As you walk through the narrow, cobblestone streets, you’ll see every house has climbing flowers in beautiful colorful pots. These fragrant decorations give the town a fun, bright atmosphere, perfect for exploring one morning. Once you reach this cute destination, you’ll quickly see why it’s named one of ‘the most beautiful villages of Italy’!
Rasiglia is a storybook stone village at the foot of the beautiful Apennine mountains surrounded by green woodlands. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it’s most famous for its small rivers, canals, and waterfalls that gently flow through the town. Visitors can cross the water via sweet wooden and stone bridges, which have given the village the nickname ‘Venice of Umbria’.
This is a tiny village; there are only about 50 houses here, making it a lovely place to visit for an hour. Because of its beauty, it’s very popular with local Italians who visit on the weekends, so we recommend visiting during a weekday to see it at its most tranquil.
Umbria is known for its delicious cuisine, and Assisi is an amazing place to try some of the best local specialties. From porchetta and truffles to thick pasta and versatile stews, the food here is full of flavor. Pair it together with a glass of local wine and an incredible view!
Some of our favorite restaurants and cafes in Assisi are:
Taverna dei Consoli
Ristorante Pizzeria Monaci
Chiosco Vamos
La Piazette delle Erbe
Il Baccanale
La Terrazze di Properzio
Trattoria Spadini
Ristorante La Selva
The closest airport to Assisi (only 20 kilometers away) is Perugia airport, with connections to different European destinations. Alternatively, you can fly to a larger airport like Rome or Florence and take the train (about 2 hours) or a rental car to Assisi, Italy.

The honorees didn't dress up for the opening of a new museum in the charming Italian hamlet of San Severino Marche. When they saved works of art that had been damaged by earthquakes in 2016 and are now being restored and shown, they were dressed as firefighters should.
More than 300 people were killed and several homes, churches, and museums were severely damaged by the three major earthquakes that struck central Italy between August 24 and October 30, 2016.
After six years, some of the art that was rescued has a permanent home. Other artefacts are awaiting relocation or return to their newly reconstructed churches.
1,970 works of art were damaged, approximately half of them significantly, in the Marche region's Archdiocese of Camerino and San Severino Marche. Numerous tiny churches and massive basilicas in neighbouring Umbria collapsed, causing thousands of more homes to be affected.
"Art can be an inspiration for reconstruction, joy and hope," said Francesco Massera, archbishop of Camerino and San Severino Marche, at the recent opening of the museum.
The phrase "from sickness to health" is conveyed in the museum's name, Museo dell' Arte Recuperata (Museum of Recovered Art).
"I feel like I am in a field hospital where survivors are treated until they are well," said Italian art critic Vittorio Sgarbi.
A few of the restored pieces are shown alongside to images or videos of dust-covered firefighters pulling them from the rubble.
The Umbrian administration resolved to get ready for the next major earthquake after a quake in 1997 that damaged the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi struck the region.
The first facility in Italy designed specifically to receive and restore artwork damaged by earthquakes has been operating since 2006 in an industrial region outside of Spoleto.
Thousands of works of art are housed in hermetic sectors of the enormous, technologically advanced, earthquake-proof elastic edifice.
The first is a large enough emergency receiving space for trucks to arrive and unload. Dust is removed via enormous vacuum tubes that dangle from the ceiling.
For each of the other purposes—preventing additional deterioration or damage, repair, and storage while awaiting discharge—each sector has its own climate control.
The visitor may be overwhelmed by the captivating collection of artwork, frescoes, statues, chalices, candles, vestments, reliquaries, and magnificent wooden crucifixes. Numerous church bells are arranged in a line outside, guarding the area.
Director of the Spoleto facility and art historian Giovanni Luca Delogu, 55, stated, "It is very important to see the overall picture and that includes regular maintenance."
When there are tragedies like earthquakes, you can't just step in and fix things. Some of the parts were already damaged. It requires ongoing maintenance, he said while passing by numerous pieces of the Campi, Italy, church of San Salvatore, some of which date back to the 12th century.
The chunks have been sifted, catalogued, and put together like jigsaw pieces, many of which still have pieces of frescoes attached. They are positioned next to images of the same areas taken before the earthquakes.
The two rose windows of the church and a stone screen panel with elaborate carvings that originally connected the sides of an arch have been put back together.
The neighbouring St. Benedict's Basilica, a popular tourist destination and the finest example of mediaeval architecture in Umbria's Nera River Valley, is currently being reconstruction.
Uncertainty surrounds the future of minor treasures like San Salvatore in Campi and Santa Maria della Pieta in Preci.
Parish groups are welcome to visit the depository at Delogu to see the statues they once worshipped before. Some are loaned to towns for religious occasions that are highly regarded locally, including processions on a patron saint's feast day.
"Even an earthquake cannot rupture some bonds," he said.
