Alice Coltrane & Santana - Previously Unissued 1974 Recordings
Further Illuminations! The Heat Warps and Mr. Completely delivered the goods last week with a sizable selection of heretofore uncirculated Alice + Carlos (and John McLaughlin) recordings. Truly great stuff — some very interesting outtakes, improvs and alternates from the Illuminations sessions and a fairly astounding live tape from 1974. Lots of celestial harp and burnt Wurlitzer, along with Santana and McLaughlin's fusion-y flights of fancy. Let us go into the house of the Lord!!!
The details: A pair of documents has recently emerged to expand our understanding of this collaboration. The first, a 3-hour + 45-minute collection of newly discovered audio from the Illuminations sessions, including previously unknown compositions, stripped back tracking sessions, overdub reels, working tapes and a cache of alternate takes and mixes. It offers a wide-screen vision of the avenues this album could have taken: a more earth-bound collection rooted in free jazz and heavy fusion, or a pared-down, reflective journey aimed to guide listeners on an inner search. All that could have been is laid out here. The second document, equally illuminating, is a previously un-circulated soundboard recording of a March 14, 1974 concert from the Kabuki Theater in San Francisco. The tape features spare devotional sets from John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, sets from Alice Coltrane in both solo and trio settings, as well as ensemble performances of Illuminations material and more.

I think the nomus could def be monsters! If nothing else, the spirits of the dead lingering around it as they writhe and scream.
It would be interesting if Izuku realizes the bullets don’t do much, and that he needs to take a far more hands on approach. His father didn’t raise him, but he did train him. In a move made with practiced calculation, Izuku ducks around the nomu’s lumbering legs and sticks one of his daggers into its back. Then another. And then the first again. It doesn’t take long for him to force his way to the monsters shoulders even as too dark blood (old blood he knows. Uncirculated) slicks his hands and darkens his costume. He hangs on even as the nomu tries to rip him off, but it won’t be able to. Not from this position.
It’s easy to plunge his knives into the creatures brain. To carve out the exposed brain matter that’s more like a thing stitched together than a unified piece. Below him, a shudder runs through the nomu as it finally falls limp. With blood splattered across his face and gore on his hands, Izuku looks up to see the the spirits finally fade with looks that could be peace on their flickering features. Past them, the doors of the USJ finally burst open and the teachers come barreling in.
His position on top of the dead monster gives him a good vantage point he notes. He can see almost everything in the USJ. The prone mist villain with his metal collar cracked beside him from the force of a bullet. Shigaraki writhing in Eraseheads capture scarf desperately trying to dust the fabric even as the gaps where each of his thumbs should be stain it red. But what’s more is that he sees the flash of horror and comprehension in Snipes eyes as he rushes to Izuku’s side.
!!!!
It’s not until after when Izuku’s skin is pink and raw from scrubbing (being a hunter means getting covered in only God knows what more often than not, but that doesn’t mean Izuku has to like it.) and they’re sitting in a room with Snipe, Aizawa, Nezu, and a police officer in a hat and long coat as they go over the debrief.
“Why did you kill them, kid?” The officer asks.
“It wasn’t human, just made from part a of them,” a Izuku answers, eyes trained down at their hands and the near black dead blood still stubbornly clinging around their green painted nails Himiko had done the day before. They would have to ask her to do them again.
“Truth,” the officer says involuntarily, eyes widening as he takes in Izuku.
This child.
“How did you know?”
Izuku does look up then, red red eyes from the tears they would only let fall in the shower (where their dad could never see. Could never try to beat that last weakness out of them.) but their eyes land on Snipe’s unmasked face. Asking. Pleading.
“What the kid says can’t leave this room. Not to your superiors. Not to anyone. You hear me?” Snipe’s drawl is heavy on his tongue as he turns to each of them, glares them down until they nod. Nezu looks enthralled.
“I’m not quirkless. There are… monsters that most people can’t see that prey in humans. I can see them. Before UA I was taught how to kill them before they could kill humans.”
Aizawa straightens, having been handed the final piece to a puzzle that had been haunting him only to realize it was just a small part of something so much bigger.
“The… Nomu,” The use the word one of the villains had hurled at them like a knife. ‘You killed my nomu,’ shrieked over and over again even as he writhed in coils of capture weapon. “The people that it once was… they were suffering. It hurt them. I set them free.”
They frown when a memory nearly lost in the hazy of the end of the fight clicking sharply into focus. “The mist villain is one too but… different. It… there’s a boy with blue hair missing one of his eyes that follows him. He was screaming… he tried to help Mr Aizawa.”
That made all three UA staff members freeze. A horrible realization dawning whether they wanted it to or not.
“A boy?” Aizawa chokes out.
Izuku nods. “He was wearing a jacket like an old school pilot with a pair of goggles around his neck. His hair looked like it was standing on end but not like it was static but like—“
“A cloud,” Aizawa finishes the thought, gray and looking more than a little untethered. Without another word he stands and leaves the room.
Izuku wonders if it would have been kinder not to tell them at all.

Different anon here but can you go into more detail about how the original shorts are uncirculated and misinterpreted in certain fandom circles? I was under the impression that they were the most iconic and well-known versions of the characters and the other LT stuff wasn’t as popular.
I don’t want to go too in-depth about this because I don’t want to come off as hateful towards TLTS however I will say (with no disrespect towards people that like it and esp not the people that worked on it) that I feel the reason for its sudden resurgence has less to do about the show *in particular* but more how it presents the Looney Tunes cast in a consistent domestic setting with consistent characters—which is much more easily consumable for fandom than shorts with VERY little continuity and characterizations that could depend on director, year, or even just that short.
☝️this previous anon i just got completely hit the nail on the head and shares my sentiments exactly. The Looney Tunes Show hit a HUGE resurgence of popularity in the past few years (which is great, anything to get people interested in the characters) but i sometimes get the impression people wholly base their impressions on the characters off the show, and the show is VEEEERY far removed from the attitudes and personalities of the originals
i ALWAYS go on about him and have used this comparison countless times so i apologize for going on about it again, but a great example of this is Porky—i have a lot of issues as to how he’s portrayed in TLTS because he’s often portrayed as a helpless dweeb who everyone picks on and beats up and he’s just supposed to take it. this portrayal has sort of been adopted in a lot of modern LT media as a whole, but there’s a tendency to generalize characters, take one trait and run with it. Porky totally could be passive and a little dweebish in the originals (but often from a standpoint that paints it as endearing rather than mean spirited and sympathetic by proxy), but i have a hard time believing the same character who has spelled “START PRAYING DUCK” with a spray of bullets in the white flag Daffy was waving as a means of surrendering would totally be fine with having Daffy throw… was it butter? bread? i forget but there’s an ep of TLTS where Daffy lives with Porky and then just turns him into his personal assistant and throws stuff at him and Porky’s just fine with it. this is the same guy who nearly drove a domesticated dog to jump off a bridge and successfully shot a cat dead because it was keeping him awake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what little OF the originals is circulated again from a very fandom centric point of view… this isn’t an issue exclusive to the LT fandom, but viewing everything from a lens of “i MUST ship these two characters together everything has to be shippable” (i did this when i was first getting into things too—it’s a hard habit to break but i promise you do not have to ship anything and everything to get fulfillment) is so restrictive and makes people concoct their own personalities for the characters WHICH IS FINE, but trying to pass those interpretations off as cold hard fact is not so great. a lot of misrepresentation gets circulated that way and it all just kinda turns into one big loop
i realize how pompous i sound right now so i just want to say: don’t take any of this too seriously. my main point of this is to say curate your OWN experience and make opinions for yourself by watching the originals, and that INCLUDES me. if you watch the originals and don’t like them and want to keep doing things your way, DO IT! feel free to disregard all of this. i promise i’m speaking from a place of passion and love rather than scorn and gatekeeping. we all come from different places and have different points of view and different ways to experience things that we find the most fulfilling. if you enjoy shipping the characters and searching for a continuity and deeper meaning, that ROCKS and more power to you. i just wish more people would check out the originals or at least base those headcanons with an acknowledgement of the original mindset in mind, because i feel much of the popular consensus on the characters ranges from generalized/surface level to wholly misrepresented.
to say people have to enjoy and experience LT a particular way is totally wrong, and HAVING FUN should be a priority first and foremost. but i really do think you should familiarize yourself with the source material so you can have an understanding of what’s actually there versus so you can build off of that or at least acknowledge it. the LT characters are not one big happy family, they’re not ALWAYS actors unless explicitly stated otherwise, there are trends and continuous character traits or formulas for certain characters, yes, but the shorts themselves have no continuity. these characters change constantly in the originals. there are at times 3 separate conflicting interpretations of the same character at the same TIME from different characters. some people have a tendency to view that as a sign of weakness, and that’s WHY i encourage people to check out the originals because that variety and humanization and FEELING THE HANDS AND MINDS AND BACKGROUNDS THAT MADE THE CARTOONS is such a fulfilling and UNIQUE experience. revel in the variety and confusion and dissonance of the originals. there doesn’t always have to be an explanation or an end justifying the means. it’s 7 minutes of characters beating each other up, saying funny lines, and making outdated radio or celebrity references. enjoy it for what it is

Television - The Bowery Ballroom, New York City, December 30 / December 31, 2017
From the Bottom Line to CBGB to the Bowery Ballroom — we're taking a little tour of NYC venues past and present this week. Here, we're headed back to TV Land with two of Television's last New York City performances! Historic stuff. Previously uncirculated tapes, too, courtesy of longtime friend of the blog Daniel Bourque. Thank you, Dan! These shows are full of cool/interesting playing, long jams, some unusual rarities and a generally lively atmosphere — the New Year's Eve gig in particular. Take it away, Dan!
Dan's show notes:
These shows were meant to close out 2017 and ring in the New Year, and I have always wondered how they happened since Tom and Television were not exactly known for the jovial atmosphere they brought to the stage, nor were they – how do I put this? A party band. "Hey, you know who knows how to have a good time? Tom Verlaine!" Nevertheless, the shows were sold out and everybody seemed to be having a great time; I certainly did.
Night 1: The set is fairly standard for live performances by the band during their final years and heavily focused on songs from Marquee Moon with "1880 or so" the only song from the eponymous reunion album and nothing from Adventure. "Little Johnny Jewel," the band's first single, is played as an encore. Both "Persia" and "I'm Gonna Find You" which were never (as far as we know) recorded by the band appear, as does "The Man In The Backyard," a true rarity only played a couple of times live, both solo by Verlaine and with Television. After "Persia" is played, the band pause for one of their lengthy (and frequent!) tuning sessions during which Tom comments: "Our old manager said don't bother tuning because nobody can ever tell. But I disagree with him."
Night 2: Tom is unusually talkative during this show after having hardly spoken to the crowd at all the previous night. Maybe it's the just the holiday but he seems in a positively cheerful - even playful - mood much of the time. Early on he archly complains about the lights "Time for a private conversation with the lighting director" and after "1880 Or So" promises to teach the crowd a dance (!) shortly before midnight. Then during "Torn Curtain" (which is a bit messy as a result) he calls for security when a rowdy inebriated fan down front passes out, and comments afterwards "I think our unfortunate super celebratory stoner is gone.”
Like the previous night the set is very heavily weighted toward songs from Marquee Moon, with "1880 Or So" off of the eponymous reunion album the lone exception. Mid-set the band start "Friction" only to stop it abruptly then play it later as an encore. Just before midnight Tom recites a poem, then after counting down to the New Year the band play a loose cover of "Auld Lang Syne" with Eleanor Friedberger joining the band onstage and contributing some vocals. Hendrix playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" it certainly isn't, but it's a unique one-off and fun to hear the band play it in their very distinctive style. This is also as far as I know (maybe Patti Smith?) the only Television performance with a guest appearance by another artist. This is followed by a ragged version of "Psychotic Reaction," a cover the band have played many times over the years. There are also a couple of unreleased songs, "Persia" and "I'm Gonna Find You" and late in the set the band play another new song, "The Eel," which is a bluesy rocker. This, Tom points out is what he meant when he said he was going to teach the crowd a dance!
