New zirconia-based catalyst can make plastics upcycling more sustainable
A new type of catalyst breaks down polyolefin plastics into new, useful products. This project is part of a new strategy to reduce the amount of plastic waste and its impact on our environment, as well as recover value that is lost when plastics are thrown away. The catalyst was developed by a team from the Institute for Cooperative Upcycling of Plastic (iCOUP), a U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Frontier Research Center. The effort was led by Aaron Sadow, the director of iCOUP, scientist at Ames National Laboratory, and professor at Iowa State University; Andreas Heyden, professor at the University of South Carolina; and Wenyu Huang, scientist at Ames Lab and professor at Iowa State. The new catalyst is made only of earth-abundant materials, which they demonstrated can break carbon-carbon (CC) bonds in aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Aliphatic hydrocarbons are organic compounds made up of only hydrogen and carbon. Polyolefin plastics are aliphatic hydrocarbon materials composed of long chains of carbon atoms linked together to form strong materials. These materials are a big part of the plastic waste crisis. Wenyu Huang said, "More than half of produced plastics so far are polyolefin based."

Wonderful tribute. I'll have to visit the Horseshoe to see it in person the next time I'm near campus.

Third-Eye Man Awareness Poster Reconstruction - Original circa 1997
Created: Circa fall 1997
Archive Number: #3452-7
The original Third-Eye Man Awareness Poster in the archive's possessions is in bad shape, so a digital reconstruction was necessary. Using scans of the three fragments of the poster, one of our Archivists was able to show us what the poster would have looked like in use.
While Columbia residents would have been aware of the Third-Eye Man's presence in Columbia in 1997, (as we believe the first official siting was sometime during the 1940s), out-of-state students would not have been as informed on the creature.
If any community members have an intact, original print of this poster, please consider donating it to the Archive.

A New Adventure: 1/26/2023
Ahoj! I am Hannah. I am a Junior at the University of South Carolina and am very excited to share my journey throughout the study abroad experience for Spring 2023. Currently, I am in all the feelings right now about this next experience in life… I am writing this on January 25th, 2023 and I am leaving the United States this Friday and flying over to Europe.
Overall, I am excited to study abroad and ready to delve into Czech culture. I do have independent travel experience, as I went to South Korea by myself last May. Having that previous experience has also made me less nervous about the whole travel experience itself. I am also going with a fellow Gamecock, Ashley Saltzman. I am very excited and comfortable about my travel journey knowing I have a buddy with me throughout my travels.
However, I am definitely feeling the jitters too. Although excitement is definitely the main emotion, I am also sad because I won’t be able to see my friends, boyfriend, and family for a while and although, yes I have traveled independently before, it has not been for this long of a duration. Ever since I was little, I had bad anxiety when it came to sleepovers and being out of my house for a while. At this point, home are the people I am leaving behind but I am happy to have a little bit of home with me, through Ashley, which will help with my jitters.
To prepare to go abroad, I had to complete two separate applications: USC and CEA. CEA is the third-party program that I used for my study abroad experience. After working through the online portions, I had to run around all of Columbia in order to get all the materials needed for a Czech visa. This needed to be done back in October as a precaution if the Consulate takes a while to review. After gathering the materials and miraculously getting my student visa approved in two weeks, I only had to book my flights.
The issue with traveling to Europe is the expense of getting there. Direct flights to Prague from New Jersey were over $900 one way. In order to make sure that both Ashley and I can adjust to the time zone as well as saving hundreds of dollars, we decided to fly into Copenhagen, stay for the weekend, then take a flight from Copenhagen to Prague the day we are set to arrive in Prague. Not only will we have some extra funds, we are also going to be able to experience a new country for a weekend before orientation next week. This transitional weekend will not only prepare our minds for this next semester, but it will also help us prepare for what it is like to be in Europe. I am even calling this weekend the “teaser trailer” for my next few months in Prague.
Experiencing butterflies for this next chapter in my life. It is like jumping into the unknown, and I am so excited to see what Prague has to offer!

'Twas the Night Before Study Abroad
Eeek! Tomorrow at 11:55 my first flight will be taking off. How crazy that it's finally time to go to Italy! It doesn't feel quite real yet, but I'm sure once I'm on that 8 hour flight I'll definitely feel it.
It is a bit scary knowing that I am going to be flying to Europe, an entire continent I have never been to. On top of that I literally do not know a single person in my program or really anyone in the country. Well I mean there's that one girl from 6th grade soccer in Florence, but I'm not sure if that really counts.
I have obviously been thinking about this experience a lot as it will literally become my life for the next four months. Since I am leaving in January as well, this semester is going to come with some resolutions. First off, I am excited to be back on a schedule and have some structure and things to do. It is hard for me to stay motivated and going when I am home for winter break, especially since this one was a bit longer than usual. Next, I had some rough patches with old friends last year and coming home I feel like I have grown apart from people who were past friends. Therefore, I really want to make some friends this semester and be open to meeting new people. I want to be authentic and make real bonds and memories with these people whom I will share a semester with like none other. I already know study abroad friends will be special because when else do you go live in Europe with a bunch of strangers! Third, I want to chose experiences. Study abroad is obviously an expensive time, but I hope to spend my money on great experiences and trying new things. Finally, I am going to work on loving myself and time with myself. I set up my class schedule so that I have no Monday classes and my Tuesdays start late (also no one has Fridays but that is university standards not me). I hope to use these free times to do things for myself that usually slip away when I am in America. I want to walk around the city every Monday morning and sit by myself sipping a latte and reading a book. I want to love those moments of being all alone that seem scary and like you're failing because you have no friends by realizing I am choosing this and enjoying my time and this is relaxing and not a reflection of if I have friends or not.
I have thought a lot about these personal goals that go beyond just my bucket list for sightseeing or budgeting. (trust me I have plenty of those though) Study abroad is a great time to experience life and really grow in ways that I will be able to take home as well.
So my suitcases are packed (mostly) and I have a travel day outfit picked out. These next four months are going to absolutely fly by. So while I am a bit scared and sad to leave, I am also hopeful and excited for what's to come. (I think positivity and being flexible will be key to this semester) Stay tuned for what's to come when I touch down in Rome on the 24th at 10am!!

So, we have started the college visit process.
We went to the University of South Carolina in July. Great Honors College, but she wasn't impressed with the campus or the town of Columbia. I don't think it was a fair visit since it was in July and the campus was empty, of course.
Now we are at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She is in LOVE. We spent the day learning all about the Pharmacy School. Very impressive. My only concern is we haven't seen any Black kids. I think we've seen maybe 3. Just large groups of Asian, Indian and white kids roaming around. When I asked about the lack of Black students they said they were working on it in the School of Pharmacy. What about the rest of campus? There's almost 50,000 students at this school!
Next up, Ohio State in Columbus, OH and Loyola in Chicago.
