VERSION 2.0 of my horror visual novel Mother's Favorite is live right now!
This has been 4 years in the making! This version of the demo covers 1/3rd of the total game and gives a pretty good slice of the atmosphere, characters and story.
The demo is free to play with a 'pay what you want' option. It would mean the world to me if this was shared around and given constructive criticism if possible.
Please note this game is a horror game and is not suitable for all audiences. A full list of content warnings are available on the itch.io page for those interested.
I am honored and humbled by all the people who have stuck with the project this long and have contacted me about their interest!
Have fun and try to keep Fourth alive!

Lucky Day! (Visual Novel)
Created by: JORDAN
Genre: Horror
Phew, really going with these yanjam games. Lucky Day! is the prequel to Dr. Morgan’s Counseling Session and I think that it is a major improvement in a lot of different aspects. What is really nice is that true ending into the events of the next game, which I really liked. If you are interested in more information on these games, you can find them at @verinefan for more information.
In total there are nine different endings you can get- one for discovering what Oliver is doing in every strange thing that happens, one for ignoring him, one for being completely oblivious, one neutral ending and one true ending that feeds into the next game. I'll be splicing the other endings between each day while writing the summary portion.
The story starts with the MC going to the pet store to buy somethings for their friend's pet. After grumbling to find the items, they bump into a strange man who seems to need help. The MC offers his their help to find where the hamsters are located before leaving and giving the items to their friend. They have a tough following week and hopes for a better following week.
Rejecting to help this man will lead to it's own ending where the MC just continues on with life.
The MC ends up going to a garage sale and finding one of their favorite plushes in the sale for a cheap price. The MC brings it home only to find a strange beeping noise coming from it.
Opening the plushie will reveal a camera inside of it and the MC removes the SD card on it to inspect it. They notice that the person was the same one they met in the pet store and that they planted the plushie in the yard sale. Oliver knocks on the door, and the MC escapes via car and runs him over.
The next day the MC is excited for a package they ordered. Opening the package reveals not what they bought but rather a USB. Within the USB are folders of different shows, games, music and other things that the MC likes. The MC notices a hidden unnamed folder.
Opening it will reveal countless photos and videos of things related to the MC. Scared, the MC tries to figure out what to do and if they should turn it to the police but instead decides to investigate it themselves. Looking through the photo properties, the MC is able to find the location of where it was taken. As it's close by, the MC decides to go to the location and finds a box to find some of the things that they had lost. Oliver ends up drugging the MC and taking them away.
The MC has a day off and decides to cancel some subscriptions to save some money. While going to cancel one of them, but realizes that something is weird and that all of the payment dates are off by a month.
Investigating further finds that all of the subscription have a Paypal connected underneath the MC's credit card. The MC is confused since if it was a hacker, why would they pay for all of them? The MC emails Oliver and Oliver response that they paid for them all because he likes them and hat they've been watching them. The MC cancels and blocks Oliver, locking the windows as well. At night, someone comes to knock on the door and runs into Oliver. The MC freaks out that he's broken in and the MC knocks him out and calls the police.
The next day the MC goes biking with a friend. You two enjoy the outdoors and then take a rest- only for the MC's friend to realize that they were being tracked. Checking on the bike, they find the tag on the bike.
Contacting the owner will have the MC and the friend call at a nearby cafe only to hear the ringtone nearby. Oliver responds stating that he didn't lose the tag, and that he was tracking the MC on purpose wanting to make sure they were okay. Your friend offers to hold onto the tag for you and the MC goes home only to find Oliver there who declares happily that he had come to pick them up. The MC gets knocked out due to the drugged food they were eating and Oliver takes them away.
The MC finishes a project for work the next day and a coworker apologizes for the bad last week and offers to treat them out for food. The MC agrees, but upon reaching the location, the coworkers apologizes for ditching at the last second and sends them money for a meal.
Looking for the coworker, the MC walks around and tries to call them only to hear the phone ring in an alleyway. The MC picks up a metal pipe for protection and finds a bloodied coworker with a Oliver standing on top of him. Oliver attempts to apologize to the MC before attacking them to prevent him from going to the police. The MC strikes back knocking Oliver out and calling the police/ambulance.
Ignoring or being mostly oblivious will lead to the MC having a nice week with one ending wishing every week were this lucky or wondering if they should have looked more into other things.
The true ending occurs if you build the MC's anxieties up but never catch Oliver. The MC has a bit of a panic attack and gets an ad about going to therapy which is what leads to the event of the next game.
Like I mentioned before, I honestly do think that the creator has improved a lot since their last game in terms of story, UI, artwork and everything. This game feels a lot more full (if that's the right word) and more colorful- it's really nice to see creator's improvements as they move onto another project or game.
Personally, I think the ways that Oliver was able to "improve" each day for the MC were all done fairly creatively. From the USB with all the things that the MC liked, to paying for their subscription services to tracking them on their bike ride, each of them have a fairly unique spin on how Oliver was able to track the MC. I think it's also nice that Oliver doesn't always win in his encounters and that the MC is generally a bit more prepared even when they do lose. I'm very used to yanderes that are able to win in all these kinds of bad endings, so it's nice to have it where it's a bit more matched. I also really like how the True ending is able to tie the prequel to the events of the next game so that it really does feel like a prequel. It was a good touch.
As a yandere, I did mention that Oliver was a bit clumsy in his methods and it continues in this as well. In each encounter, the events are generally suspicious or obviously weird in some way or another. A lot of the times, he seems to not be prepared when some things happen, like when the MC discovers that Oliver had knocked out their coworker or he comes in at a point where the MC can very easily retaliate like when he knocks on the door and the MC ends up running him over with their car. Oliver does seem to be pretty opaque when the MC does find out, stating straight out for instance when the MC asks him why he paid for his account, Oliver straight up tells the MC it's because he likes them instead of making up an excuse, or when trying to return the tag, tells them that he put it there on purpose. Even in cases where he does win like when he chloroforms the MC, the MC at least is a bit more prepared on what will happen and had to do work to track where the items were. Generally, it does seem like Oliver only purposefully interacts with the MC either because the MC finds out or he doesn't want to be sent to the police, and is happy just staying in the shadows and giving the MC different "gifts" to make their week better. Relatively harmless to the MC except when caught, which is on par with his other game.
Other than that, it seems like a pretty good prequel. If you have played Dr. Morgan’s Counseling Session but not this game, then I highly recommend you play it. It really builds on Oliver's character as a yandere and is just a fun time.

Revisiting Gakuen Handsome: Backstory + short review
I think every BL fan has seen something related to Gakuen Handsome at some point in their lives, it's a parody BL visual novel with quite the legacy. It was originally released in 2010 by Team YokkyuFuman and it also got its own OVA and anime adaptation in 2015 & 2016. The protagonist, who is an unnamed seventeen year old boy, moves back to the city after a seven year absence. He enrolls into Baramon High School, a prestigious all-boys school which takes pride in being the best of its prefecture. From now on, his life will be changed forever...
Tumblr media
First of all, the developer team's backstory is probably one of the most unique ones. In 2008, eight film students from the Tohoku University of Art and Design formed Team YokkyuFuman (チーム欲求腐満). Their blog mentions that a year later, they attempted to submit the Gakuen Handsome opening movie to the 9th edition of the Niconico Film Festival (their submission was completely ignored). After that, the opening movie was uploaded on NicoNico Douga, where it was quite well received. The description of the video mentions “to be released in 20009”, as they originally probably had no intention to create a full game.
After it became a hot topic on NicoNico Douga, their university gave them permission to organize an official exhibition: Gakuen Handsome Matsuri (or just Gakuen Handsome Festival). Visitors could watch the opening movie, learn more about the characters and take pictures together with the life-sized cardboard cutouts. The exhibition also featured rare merch: A drama CD which would be released in "20009" and canned bread.
Tumblr media
This exhibition was apparently not only held once, but many times according to their blog. The game was finally released in 2010 and many fans were happy to finally play it, supporting the team that created it. Togo Mito, who many of you know as the creator of (in)famous BL game Hadaka Shitsuji, also collaborated with them. These are some pictures I found on Togo Mito's old blog, Mizoguchi and Juro drawn by Togo Mito and the Hadaka Shitsuji cast drawn by Team YokkyuFuman.
Tumblr media
Even after graduation, it seems like they would occasionally invite some of Gakuen Handsome's creators. In 2014, the university tweeted that they would not be able to host the exhibition that year due to renovations, but visitors could take pictures with the cardboard cutouts. There's also an interview from 2016 on the university's website, in which they talk about how things have been after graduation! I absolutely love how the university supported all of this.
Tumblr media
Now about the game itself... Where to even start? You'll have to trust me, but the game is actually good. Many parody games can be quite a hit or miss, but this visual novel is something I still catch myself laughing at years later. The inconsistent art, pointy chins and strange jokes really create an experience unlike anything else. I don't think any commercial company would be able to create something like this, even if they tried. One detail that the anime adaptation doesn't really show is that many different artists worked on this, whose styles widely vary from each other, making absolutely no attempt to create one consistent artstyle. Most characters have at least 2 ~ 3 sprites that often look completely different from each other. For example, sometimes Saionji sensei looks like a clean-shaven teenager/young adult, but in the CGs he suddenly turn into an older looking man with a stubble.
Tumblr media
Yes he's talking about eating paint in the screenshot above, why not. Anyway... the voice acting in this game is something else I wanted to talk about, because it adds so much to the game. Of course it's not professional, but I think that's what makes it amazing. You can sometimes hear the voice actors trying really hard not to laugh, and they will occasionally completely mess up their lines. Of course all of those lines are kept in the game and they didn't re-record them. I also loved it when they started swearing in English for seemingly no reason. Also, instead of just avoiding the name of the protagonist (who you can give any name you want) they pronounce it... by improvision. Just imagine how one would try to pronounce a "adfgdf" keysmash and you'll get an idea what it sounds like.
Tumblr media
There are 6 characters in this game who you can romance. The protagonist's childhood friend Takuya, who is a bit obsessed with the protein bar Calorie Mate (which is censored in the new version of the game, so you just hear a BLEEP sound), outlaw teacher Saionji, school principal Juro who basically only functions as a save point, student council president Kagami, chuunibyou transfer student Shiga, and last but not least, the captain of the soccer team Mitsurugi, who also murders people with his chin sometimes. The protagonist's sister also has a (non-romantic) ending, which you need to play in order to unlock the extra scenario (which... is a ridiculous murder mystery story for some reason). I also could not find the guide I used a long time ago, so I just looked at some videos on NicoNico to see what others were doing and that worked pretty well...!
My favorite scene is probably still that one scene in Mitsurugi's route, in which he stabs people with his chin. It's also one of the scenes that gets referenced the most in fanart. The context makes it even more ridiculous, Mitsurugi gets really upset that some people like the chunky variant of red bean paste (tsubuan) and decides they should die. After stabbing his teammate and multiple other people he runs outside. The protagonist however, isn't safe either and also gets accused of being a "tsubuan supporter". If you survive though, you get a chance to marry Mitsurugi!
Tumblr media
Honestly one of the reasons I wanted to write about this game is because many people only know the OVA and/or anime, but the game is so funny I think everyone should play it if they're interested. I also think the team behind it has such a funny backstory and I love seeing how supportive their university is. Right now the team is still active on their Twitter account and they sometimes create new content. Last year they released Gakuen Handsome Fighters, a short fighting game featuring the Gakuen Handsome characters.
If you are interested in purchasing it, I recommend getting the "Special" edition which can be purchased on DLsite! I couldn't find a working download link anymore of the older version, but I think the creators deserve the support, so I don't regret buying it (it was about 15 USD). It includes the original game and 5 shorter stories which were originally released as smartphone apps. While I think the original game is still the best one, it's fun to explore some of the extra scenarios as well. One of the shorter games takes place in an alternative universe in which the boys live in the Heian period, and for some reason some of the sprites are animated... yeah.

Hey, everyone.
In 2022, I wrote and illustrated a short comic book which I published and sold copies of at that year’s MICE. Entitled Adyton, it was a brief exploration of what I'd very loosely call the close encounter phenomenon, with an emphasis on the abduction aspect. Since then, I’ve wanted to expand on the book; but, as is usual for me, I have to ruminate on something for a long while until embarking on the project feels right. This recently happened, and I’ve decided to entitle what I intend to be my first complete and long-form graphic novel Can You See Behind the Moon? I’m not going to say where the title comes from, and will leave it to those who are more familiar with some of the paranormal literature to recognize its origin.
Over the years, I’ve made sputtering attempts at other graphic novels, but the lack of a clear narrative direction for one doomed it to oblivion (Underbrickers), while the creative momentum of the other seemed bound to a very particular timeframe (Grim Synergy). Differently, I see this project as encompassing ideas which, to varying degrees, are present within my mind every day, or every other day, and I do think it can be sustained by that persistence. If I were forced to speak in very general and perhaps reductive terms about Can You See Behind the Moon?, it is my attempt to explore possibilities implied by close encounters in a way which emphasizes a deep and occulted relationship humanity appears to have with itself, the cosmos, and what one might term the evolutionary impulse.
The first four pages you see here (not counting the cover) are recreations of Adyton’s first six pages. As should be apparent, the narrative is not linear. Like Adyton, the plot sometimes progresses according to visual resonances which can also be interpreted as conceptual resonances. For instance, the as-yet-unnamed young man’s finger-gun gesture becomes the transitional point for a reference to the so-called Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter, wherein guns figured prominently, and unusually.
To be clear, this work has been done very quickly, in the interest of submitting it to relevant publishers as proof-of-concept material, and so that I’m able to maintain a pace of a couple of pages every two or three days (while also producing “fine art” for gallery shows, to say nothing of various other side projects). But I also like the roughness of the drawings, and the color of the newsprint paper… so, the making of these has also carried with it pleasure and occasional surprise at the results. Since I’ve decided to work within a limited palette, I’m relying heavily upon the linework.
For Christmas last year, my partner — somewhat regretfully — got me a comic book about UFOs published the same year by Dark Horse. I write “somewhat regretfully” because she didn’t really like the look of it; and when I received it I had to agree: the art is so simplistic, mundane, and ugly that I don’t think I’ll ever do more than skim some of the pages (the author also seems to have only done the bare minimum of research regarding Betty and Barney Hill’s case). But I’ve used the book as a point of motivation: surely, if something that bland could get green-lit by a fairly well-known comics publisher, then my work stands a chance.
Another one of my particularities is that I tend to get through projects more quickly when I don’t assign their completion an arbitrary date, and also when I don’t make myself beholden to publicizing all of the progress. I don’t intend on making a Kickstarter or anything for this — unless it becomes necessary — so I’m not sure when I’ll be prepared to share more. But, the time will come.
Anyway — even if there’s not much here yet, thanks for looking!

Top 5 written words moments that speak to you, from books, novellas, visual novels, goold ol' vidyagames, anything. the words that hits like a brick
“Faith, n. Belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge, of things without parallel.” - I beg your pardon for opening with some edge, but for angsty teenager Drimo, who was positively going through it, and yet who thought himself above simply lashing out at the world around him, the words of Ambrose Bierce's "The Devil's Dictionary" were practically an oasis. This is but one of many such quotes from Bierce's work, most of which are not intending to be edgy or cutting, and more than anything, humorous. Humor has been my strongest tool in dealing with pretty much everything, and I think it's due to The Devil's Dictionary influence on me.
“Ponemos barreras para protegernos de quienes creemos que somos. Luego un día quedamos atrapados tras las barreras y ya no podemos salir. Solo las lágrimas de auténticos sentimientos te liberaran de tu armadura”. -> "We put up barrier to protect ourselves from who we believe we truly are. Then, one day, we find ourselves captive behind these selfsame barrier and we can't leave. Only tears charged with authentic feelings could free you from your armor." - Robert Fisher's "Le Chevalier à l'armure rouillée" (The Knight in Rusty Armor) is one of my favorite books ever, the one, in fact, that taught me how much I could love reading. I'm glad it was the one. The context of these lines is that the Knight, the main character, is trapped in his rusted set of armor, which is a metaphor for his conscious lack of personality beyond what he ever wanted to project. When he couldn't get out of it, it took a long journey for him to realize just how much he hated being "the Knight" exclusively; he is the only unnamed character in the book! He is only ever, The Knight. It is ultimately, after many trials, that he manages to shatter his helmet when he cries about it, because the tears shatter the rusty armor around him. The way I'm speedrunning the description may make it seem on the nose, but throughout the narrative, this is perfectly well done and it led me to a lot of... Personal realizations about myself.
“Los animales aceptan y los humanos esperan. Nunca oirás a un conejo decir: espero que el sol salga esta mañana para poder ir al lago a jugar. Si el sol sale o no sale, no estropeara el día al conejo. Es feliz siendo un conejo. El caballero pensó en esto. No recordaba a ninguna persona que fuera feliz simplemente por ser una persona” -> "Animals accept, whereas humans expect. You'll never hear a rabbit say: I hope it's a sunny morning today so I can go play at the lake. Whether it's sunny or not, the rabbit's day won't be ruined, it'll be happy just being a rabbit. The knight pondered about this. He did not remember a single person that was happy simply for being a person" - Another one from Le Chevalier à l'armure rouillée. Every day of my life, I want to go to bed thinking "that was great" or "I learned something new" or something like that. And accomplishing that starts at the beginning of each day. No matter what, I don't want to let me make excuses, I don't want to let me ruin my own day before it even begins. Unstirred by circumstances, unmoved by temperaments, I firmly believe that your happiness is your responsibility first and foremost, and other things getting in the way of it are things you simply must rise up and surpass. I used to complain about things and blame others for my circumstances. I stopped doing that. I've been happier ever since.
"Seek adversity. Seek strength. The rest will follow." - You can say whatever you want about Dark Souls 2, but it had very clear and congruent themes. Of the lines and messages of this game, it's this line of dialogue, spoken by King Vendrick, that stays with me more so than any other. Because, yes, indeed... Life isn't easy, but it isn't necessary complex, either, and a lot of things are tied to one another... Sometimes, it's as simple as walking down a road, you know? And if you seek self-improvement, you will invariably face off with your inadequacy, and if you beat your inadequacy, if you rise up and acknowledge it and don't hide from it and fight it and win it... Well, the rest will follow.
"¿Cuántos, en la vida, huyen de otros porque no se ven a sí mismos?" -> "Just how many people, in this life, flee from others because they don't see themselves in them?" - From "La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes" comes this moment that I always think about a lot, particularly in the present day: Even supposedly open-minded people tend to like echo chambers. People with the same opinions and same tastes, and, yes, it's important to be able to relate to those you are closest with, or to people in general... But not for the life of me could I stand an echo chamber. It's comfortable, but it ultimately leads to stagnancy, and a reinforcement of a status quo in which one must always Think The Right Thing. No. I detest that. I refuse to partake of that. If having different opinions or not being mirror images of each other is a deal breaker, I hope there's no deal to break in the first place between us. And after realizing this for the first time, thanks to this book, yeah, I made much better decisions regarding who to fraternize with.
