See before I knew the history behind the story of How Thanksgiving worked but this time around. I decided to accept it as it once was. For the Dark History behind this Tragic Day to
the People of the Wampanoag Tribe 🪶🏞 Suffered a Tremendous Loss of Life. All Because some White Men who wanted to invent some Day where My People actually had a day to sit down and have food together and give thanks to one another.
When in Reality. The Real Truth is. They were Massacred, Slaughtered, Raped, and Evidently Erased from History.
But the survivoring Members of the Wampanoag Tribe are still here to tell the REAL STORY BEHIND UNTHANKSGIVING to what is known for all Native Americans around the World. To Know that you are not alone.
We are with you. To All My Family, Friends, Colleagues, and etc.

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, or a National Day of Mourning for Native Americans in New England, or "Unthanksgiving Day" for some Native Americans on the West Coast. It commemorates pilgrims and Wampanoag people sharing an autumn harvest feast in 1621. Thanksgiving days by English colonists in the 17th century were frequent, and marked what were perceived as gifts from God. Chris Newell, of the Akomawt Educational Initiative explained to Nur Ibrahim: "When it comes to the 17th century English 'days of thanksgiving,' they have no resemblance to the holiday we celebrate today. That holiday was not created until the 19th century. The English day of thanksgiving would have been a day of prayer. If they won a victory in battle that would have been a day of thanksgiving, which was normally a day of fasting, totally different from a feast." Some of these thanksgiving days celebrated genocidal atrocities, such as a massacre of Pequot people by colonists in Mystic, Connecticut in 1637. The modern Thanksgiving holiday as a feast began in 1863 at the behest of president Abraham Lincoln, and was made a national holiday by Congress in 1870. The Indigenous National Day of Mourning began in 1970, after Wamsutta James of the Wampanoag was invited to give a speech by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts celebrating the Pilgrims' arrival. James was uninvited when event organisers read his speech, which stated: "This action by Massasoit [Wampanoag leader who feasted with the English] was perhaps our biggest mistake. We, the Wampanoag, welcomed you, the white man, with open arms, little knowing that it was the beginning of the end." Die Knappheit des Winters - Indigene kämpfen gegen den Hunger
Nach einem unglaublich inspirierenden UnThanksgiving-Event im NAYA-Gemeinschaftsgarten und einer erstaunlich reichhaltigen Ernte in diesem Jahr wird uns die Tatsache, dass unsere Gemeinschaft nach wie vor mit Nahrungsmittelknappheit zu kämpfen hat, besonders deutlich vor Augen geführt.
Seit jeher haben sich indigene Völker auf die Knappheit des Winters vorbereitet, indem sie auf traditionelle Weise Lebensmittel aufbewahrten und vorhielten. Die Frühlingssonnenwende, eine Zeit der Freude und Dankbarkeit, markierte den Übergang von der Knappheit zur Fülle. Die Ankunft der ersten Lebensmittel war bedeutsam, denn sie markierte das Ende des Hungers und den Beginn des Überflusses.
Heute ist die Ernährungsunsicherheit für viele indigene Familien ein großes Problem. Collin Chavez-McCormack, Koordinator der Lebensmittelversorgung, erzählte, dass unsere Gemeindemitglieder die Speisekammer im Winter am meisten nutzen. "Dieses Jahr haben wir eine Menge frischer Produkte aus unserem Gemeinschaftsgarten für unsere Speisekammer bekommen. Die Spenden aus unserer Gemeinde helfen uns, magere Zeiten zu überstehen", sagte Chavez-McCormack.
Die Wintersaison kann auch eine schwierige Zeit für ältere Menschen sein, die nur über begrenzte Mittel verfügen und nur begrenzt Zugang zu Lebensmitteln haben. Lawrence Macy, Berater für ältere Menschen, bestätigt, dass NAYA eines der wenigen Programme in Portland ist, das speziell für ältere Menschen direkte Lebensmittelversorgung anbietet.
"Oftmals sind unsere älteren Menschen nicht in der Lage, die Lebensmittel zu bekommen, die sie sich wünschen. Es liegt an uns, sie zu versorgen, denn sie können nicht rausgehen und sie holen", sagt Macy.

Was sind die größten Bedürfnisse in unserer Gemeinde im Winter?
Es gibt ein gewisses Maß an Ernährungsunsicherheit. Das ist auch die Realität für Menschen, die finanziell nicht vorbereitet sind - wenn man mit einem geringen Einkommen lebt, hat man nicht unbedingt die Möglichkeit, Geld zu sparen oder Geld für Dinge wie gesunde Lebensmittel zurückzuhalten.
Die Feiertage sind oft eine Zeit, in der die Menschen denken oder das Gefühl haben, dass sie einfach nicht genug haben. Und sie sind nicht in der Lage, sich so zu versorgen, wie sie es eigentlich könnten - sie fühlen sich unwohl, weil sie nicht in der Lage sind, sich selbst zu versorgen.
Wie geht NAYA auf diese Bedürfnisse ein?
Wir haben schon immer Lebensmittel zur Verfügung gestellt. Wir haben eine Speisekammer hier bei NAYA. Während des Erntedankfestes hat NAYA Truthähne und Schinken für die Gemeinde zur Verfügung gestellt, und wir haben wirklich hart daran gearbeitet, dies zu organisieren. Wir sind sehr dankbar für Leute wie Fred Meyer und Kaiser, die gespendet haben und es uns ermöglicht haben, dies für unsere Gemeinde zu organisieren.
Wir sind eine Gemeinschaftsverpflegungsstelle für ältere Menschen, wir servieren Frühstück und Mittagessen für unsere Schüler/innen und Mitarbeiter/innen und bieten Mahlzeiten für die Teilnehmer/innen unseres außerschulischen Programms an. Wir bieten Mahlzeiten bei Gemeindeveranstaltungen im NAYA an und liefern Mahlzeiten an unsere Early Head Start-Kinder außerhalb des Geländes - Frühstück, Mittagessen, Snacks, was auch immer, wir versorgen Menschen!
Warum ist die Bereitstellung von Mahlzeiten und Lebensmitteln so wichtig für NAYA?
Essen ist sehr wichtig für die indigene Gemeinschaft. Wir versammeln uns um Essen, und ohne Essen geht in der indigenen Gemeinschaft gar nichts. Es ist ein ganz besonderer kultureller Wert, Essen zu haben, Essen zu verschenken oder Essen als Opfergabe mitzubringen. Wir haben Zeremonien, die sich speziell um Essen drehen - die Anerkennung der ersten Heidelbeeren, der ersten Wurzeln, der ersten Fische, die für uns kulturell so wichtig sind.
Die Möglichkeit, den Eingeborenen frische Früchte und Gemüse als Ressource und Nährstoff anzubieten, ist für unsere Gemeinschaft von großem Wert. Die Möglichkeit, frisches, nahrhaftes Obst und Gemüse anzubieten, ist eine Veränderung gegenüber der Zeit, als die Menschen in Reservate gesteckt wurden und gezwungen waren, Dinge zu essen, die nicht unbedingt gesund für uns sind.
Wie lange bietet NAYA schon Mahlzeiten an?
Wir hatten schon immer ein gewisses Maß an Essen. Wenn wir ein Treffen oder eine Versammlung hatten, gab es immer irgendeine Art von Essen, das jemand mitbrachte oder selbst zubereitete oder das NAYA kaufte. Einer meiner ersten Jobs als Teenager war ein Sommer-Cedar-Job bei NAYA, bei dem es bei jeder Veranstaltung Snacks und Essen gab. Als wir in unseren Campus in Neerchokikoo einzogen, mussten wir die Küche umbauen, um sie von einer Warmhalteküche zu einer Kochküche zu machen. Jetzt ist sie dafür ausgelegt, all diese Mahlzeiten für unsere Gemeinde bereitzustellen. Während der Pandemie produzierte unsere Küche 2.000 Mahlzeiten pro Woche, die wir an unsere Ältesten und Familien auslieferten.
Wie unterstützt NAYA unsere Älteren?
Unser Seniorenzimmer hat einen eigenen Kühl- und Gefrierschrank, in dem wir die von unserer Küche zubereiteten Mahlzeiten aufbewahren können, so dass ältere Menschen, die die Mahlzeiten in der Gemeinde verpasst haben, diese mit nach Hause nehmen und aufwärmen können. In der Gefriertruhe befinden sich abgepackte Mahlzeiten, die ebenfalls von unserer Küche zubereitet wurden. Im Seniorenraum gibt es auch eine Mini-Lebensmittelkammer, aus der sich jeder Älteste das nehmen kann, was er möchte und wann immer er es braucht.
Wenn jemand eine Lebensmittelbox möchte, bekommt er sie natürlich. Während der vergangenen Feiertage haben wir hart gearbeitet, um sicherzustellen, dass wir Truthähne und Schinken an unsere Gemeinde verteilen konnten. Wir wollten vor allem sicherstellen, dass unsere älteren Mitbürgerinnen und Mitbürger das bekommen, was sie brauchen, und vor allem, dass sie sich wohlfühlen, wenn sie nehmen, was sie brauchen.
Hast du noch etwas hinzuzufügen?
Gesundheitliche Ungleichheiten aufgrund von Armut in der indigenen Gemeinschaft sind ein Problem. Die Menschen haben Schwierigkeiten, wirklich gute und gesunde Lebensmittel für ihre Familien zu bekommen - gute Lebensmittel kosten Geld. Unsere traditionellen Lebensmittel sind in der Anschaffung sehr teuer. Es ist sehr wichtig, dass wir Lachs zur Verfügung stellen oder den Menschen beibringen, wie sie Heidelbeeren einmachen können, damit sie sich gesund ernähren können.
Du kannst helfen! Während der Feiertage und in den Wintermonaten, wenn unser Gemeinschaftsgarten ruht, wird NAYA weiterhin die Lebensmittel liefern, die unsere Gemeinde braucht. Lebensmittelspenden werden gerne angenommen, aber auch Geldspenden werden dringend benötigt, um die Vorräte und die Arbeitszeit der Mitarbeiter/innen für die Küche und die Speisekammer zu finanzieren.
