i really liked that kiyoi seems to have evaluated that he doesn’t want to leave, but he needs more so he’s going to be bold and ask for it. and he did it in a way that hira seemed to take well to by requesting basic things and kind of laying out why it needs to happen

I loved hira’s little blow up about doing all this because he likes kiyoi, which i think was needed encouragement for kiyoi that hira is trying to feel on his level, kiyoi just needs to show him that it is both possible and wanted (so much reassurance will be needed for hira, low self-esteem is a nasty beast)

hira being told by someone in his field that he is worth taking on was such a fucking game changer (koyama we love your background help) it shot his confidence up by being chosen by someone other than kiyoi and seen for his value to the industry (we don’t like being judged by work performance but I get craving that validation) it is definitely a step that helped hira feel enough to face kiyoi there at the end

kiyoi taking the chocolate and offering it to hira knowing he won’t reject that and getting him used to taking his gifts with more purpose than to be immortalized? beautiful strategy; improvise, adapt, overcome

See, all these expose on modern Japanese people’s life is the reason why I once said that I think why Japanese authors seem to overemphasize Nobu’s “wild” behaviour is because they wish they could be like that. 

That whole attitude of just saying “fuck you” to authority and do whatever they want probably feels so great. But they can’t do that in real life. So they vent through fiction. 

Like, I don’t blame those manga authors for loving the utsuke era so much, I just usually whine and yell about the fact that it’s historically wrong. And I think there’s an extra layer of adoration because unlike other types of rebels (like “phantom thieves”, or “good” yakuza, or a rebel cop solving mysteries against the bureaucracy’s will), Nobu is actually “legit”. Like, you go read about a “good Yakuza” story, I feel that most people read it with the full understanding that “LMAO a real yakuza isn’t like this”. 

But unless you’re a hardcore history nerd or a proper historian, you won’t know that half the tales you hear about Sengoku samurai are actually Edo era garbage and not true. You just have the impression that Nobu did all of those things, and then got away with it for real, which makes everything seem so much more impressive. 

Also, more on the subject of the video itself and not me rambling about samurai for the billionth time: It’s just a really sad thing that modern Japan is still trapped in the Edo era in many ways (that’s what Shogo, the guy in the video, actually said).

Udonlicious 🍜 . As I made a return visit to Uzumakiya Udon, I knew my initial instinct had been right . Just as Kemuri’s oxtail udon was one of the best things I tried during the pandemic in 2020, the Uzumakiya-exclusive Utsuke Udon and Shime Saba are the best dishes I had in 2021 . The shime saba is a modest portion (limited to only 10 servings per day) but it’s a must order and perfectly matched with onions, green onions, wasabi and a dipping sauce . But if I’m restricted to only picking a single dish each year, it is the Utsuke Dipping Udon that gets my vote . The chilled, silky smooth noodles are perfectly al dente, drizzled with a preciously small amount of chili oil, and then dipped into an umami packed hot broth ready to be slurped joyfully .
