De Tomaso P72
De Tomaso Automobili is an Italian supercar manufacturer with Argentine roots. Its logo was designed as a horse stamp, stylized with the letter "T", against the background of the Argentine flag. The founder of the company, Alejandro de Tomaso, who moved from Argentina to Italy in 1955, began his automotive career as a racer, and then created a design bureau to develop Formula 1 cars. Unable to achieve success in this direction, in 1963 he organized a small-scale production of central-engine sports cars with a backbone frame and a plastic body.

Revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the new De Tomaso P72 obviously takes inspiration from 1960s race cars, with the company saying that it was designed as a “modern-day classic”.

De Tomaso P72 De Tomaso 2014 was acquired by the Hong Kong consortium Ideal Team Ventures led by Norman Choi. Two years later, the German company Gumpert, renamed Apollo Automobil GmbH, joined this group. And in 2019, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the first joint model debuted - the De Tomaso P72, designed by Joe Wong of Wyn Design.

The historical prototype of this supercar is the De Tomaso P70 racing car, built in 1965 by Carroll Shelby and Peter Brock. It received an open body from Carrozzeria Fantuzzi and was presented at the 1965 Turin Motor Show as the De Tomaso Sport 5000.

The design of the De Tomaso P72 also bears a resemblance to another work by Fantuzzi, the legendary 1967 Ferrari 330 P3 / 4. Notable details such as a glazed engine cover with integrated exhaust pipe, dihedral doors with side glazed roof windows, retro-style round mirrors and round taillights adjacent to triple gills.

Under the elegant curves of the De Tomaso P72 body lies the Apollo Intensa Emozione hypercar chassis. These cars look like two opposites, but they share a common carbon monocoque, designed by HWA and Autotechnica Motori to the standards of the LMP1 racing class.

Both models are powered by a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated Ferrari V12 engine with 791 hp. and a Hewland 6-speed sequential gearbox. But if Apollo IE is track oriented, then De Tomaso P72 is more suited for public roads. It has a luxurious interior with quilted leather trim and a similar diamond pattern on polished copper elements: ball-shaped gear knob, steering wheel hub and circular analogue bezels.

Cadillac Cien, 2002. A V12-powered mid-engined concept design by Simon Cox to celebrate Cadillac's 100th birthday (‘Cien' is Spanish for 100). It was powered by a 750hp, 7.5-litre Northstar XV-12 concept engine featuring ‘displacement on demand’ that could shut down cylinders under lighter loads. There were no plans to put the car or its engine into series production though it was used in the 2005 sci-fi film, The Island.

One of our cooler finds lately. The W140 Mercedes Benz S-Class is frequently hailed as the most over-engineered car in the brand’s history. The cost of development of the W140 was so immense that Mercedes took a loss on every unit sold. This was in part a result of the launch of the Lexus LS400. With a successful new player in the arena, Mercedes couldn’t be outdone, especially as the infamous industry leader in executive luxury sedans.
This specific example is an S600 long wheelbase, the absolute top of the line at the time. Not only is it a V12 behemoth, this is one of four of the Sultan of Brunei’s personal, armored S600s. The glass measured 3 inches thick, and was built as a head-of-state class limousine that could withstand most any attack.
