public libraries in the usa offering free digital library cards to people not in their areas (as of october 2023):
brooklyn (13-21yo us residents)
seattle (13-26yo us residents)
boston (13-26yo us residents, EDIT: just commonly banned books)
los angeles (13-18yo california residents)
san diego (12-26yo us residents, not the whole collection just commonly banned books)
these books unbanned cards (unless otherwise stated) get you access to each library's complete libby/cloud library collection, no hoopla/kanopy/physical copies included.
ebook collections are expensive to maintain (many american libraries have annual fees for non-residents because of this) but because of an uptick in book banning (particularly brutal in mississippi last summer) larger libraries have opened their doors more, which is very kind of them!
i've used my seattle card for the last several months and their libby collection has about three times the books that my local library does, which is wonderful for accessing more niche titles or skipping a waiting list. would love to hear of similar ebook initiatives internationally!
i use library extension (firefox/chrome/edge compatible) to check all my collections (+ the internet archive) at once, works for several different countries highly recommend it.
spotify seems to be offering 15hrs/month of audiobook listening to premium subscribers and while that does seem useful if you're already paying and are after a new release with a long library waitlist, libraries are better for everything else.

A general tip for students who are sending those dreaded Religious Absence Emails to your professors: Rather than asking permission to take the day(s) off, politely let them know that you will be taking the day(s) off.
In other words, consider not saying this:
"May I miss class on [date] so I can observe [holiday]?"
It's not that there's anything wrong with the above, per se. But because it's phrased as a request, it risks coming across as optional — a favor you hope to be granted. Problem is, favors are not owed, and so unfortunately asking permission opens the door for the professor to respond "Thanks for asking. No, you may not. :)"
Instead, try something along the lines of:
"I will need to miss class on [date] because I will be observing [holiday]. I wanted to let you know of this conflict now, and to ask your assistance in making arrangements for making up whatever material I may miss as a result of this absence."
This is pretty formal language (naturally, you can and should tweak it to sound more like your voice). But the important piece is that, while still being respectful, it shifts the focus of the discussion so that the question becomes not "Is it okay for me to observe my religion?", but rather, "How can we best accommodate my observance?"
Because the first question should not be up for debate: freedom of religion is a right, not a favor. And the second question is the subject you need to discuss.
(Ideally, do this after you've looked up your school's policy on religious absences, so you know what you're working within and that religious discrimination is illegal. Just in case your professor forgot.)

Last part of Lili's arc:
Don't read this before taking a look at the other parts of the arc 😜
Warning: not so cute part ☠️
Lint went back home drained but relieved.
Time to find Lili.
Her closed fist lightly stroked the smooth wood of the orphanage’s door. Shuffling noises behind it answered her.
Giggles and hushed voices indicated to her the inhabitants must have understood it was her. 10 seconds before the incoming train of kids that would inevitably make her lose her balance due to her advanced state of fatigue.
Even after carefully getting away and, at the same occasion, avoiding the path of the violently swung open door, she ended up on the ground. 5 of the more determined children wormed their way to her arms, proud grins on their faces.
One of them, a small fox-like monster who was sitting directly on the middle of her chest, stared at her before loudly announcing to the others:
“Miss Lint is sleepy-sleepy and dirty-stinky!”
The others made various groans of deception but they still all sidestepped to let her some space.
Aw.
They are all so cute!
She will let the “miss” slide for this time.
She stood back up to go inside but three kids blocked her way. Hmm?
One smirked deviously and said, loud and clear, a single word that filled her with dread:
“Bath!”
It wasn’t like she didn’t enjoy a good cleaning and she couldn’t deny she was in a dire need of one. But…
The last time they all decided to give her a “bath”...
As the group chanted “bath, bath, bath” louder and louder, the skeleton slowly turned back, bracing herself to face what she was sure must be pointed towards her now. Her hands shakily raised in a last tentative plea.
The ten years old madjick holding a garden hose shook their head and water went splashing against her skull.
These little-
Too tired to initiate the game of tag such stunt usually warranted, Lint simply waited it out until she was utterly drenched, and the offending hose was put away- before faking a dizzy spell. She landed on the closest snickering children in a wet splash. She continued the act until most of the crowd was at least partly wet. Surprised and indignant squeaks filled the air for her grand satisfaction.
Once her craving for chaos was fulfilled, she clapped her hands to ask for some silence and therefore bring the attention to her.
“Now, all that was verrry fun but we can’t go inside all wet, can we? Unless our goal is to ruin the carpet…”
She trailed off, searching around for a specific someone.
Once her target located, she asked them softly:
“Furgacio, would you mind helping us dry faster?”
The teen, a 13 years old firebird, nodded silently and started flying in circles above them, releasing waves of warmth that made the youngest drowsy and the more soaked cheer.
The “sun bath” was pleasant.
She couldn’t relax until she saw Lili well though.
So she discreetly went inside the second she was no longer dripping water everywhere. She followed the corridor to the rooms, in case the girl was resting in hers. She wasn’t. Downstairs on the sofa? Nobody. Maybe in the bathroom? The white door leading to the living room caught her attention and diverted her path. Lint shrugged while making the hinges of the door creak. She could spare a second checking the room before heading to the bathroom.
The place was void of life safe for a shape slumped against the farthest wall.
Lint’s thoughts blurred as she darted towards it, soul pulsing wildly. There, she sagged down on her knees and delicately picked up the unresponsive child.
Please, open your eyes.
She ignored the strong smell of paint coming from nearby. She ignored the way her blanket somehow wrapped around her legs while she didn’t even remember pulling it out. She ignored the noises of the children progressively coming back into the house. All that mattered was the weight resting in her shaky arms. Long hair obscured the girl’s face. Lint’s soul was screaming, screeching for her Lili to be fine.
The situation reminded her of what exactly led her to create the safe place that was the orphanage.
So much that through the veil of her tears, things changed.
Lili’s hair got shorter and messier. Her clothes deteriorated, holes letting pale skin exposed and red liquid gushed out of a deep hole in the small chest, staining Lint’s phalanges as she couldn’t bear keeping her gloves on at the moment. The bloody marks would take days to fade away and sometimes… When the night had been particularly awful, she still had the habit to scrub her hands raw clean in the kitchen’s sink.
She wailed against her child’s chest, oblivious to the voices around her, touch and voices suddenly sounded like screams and explosions.
After a while, for a reason she ignored, she decided to give a peak in front of her. Soft golden eyes greeted her.
She did a double take.
Lili!??
No, she was still lifeless in her arms.
She shuddered and brushed away the tears leaking down her chin.
Once she could see better, she observed studiously what was in front of her.
Lili's face.
Two big golden eyes, half hidden by ginger locks, above rosy cheeks.
Impossible to get it wrong.
However.
It would have been a perfect copy if not for the roundish gray eyebrows she didn’t take notice of at first glance.
Oh…
Which one is it?
As if reading her mind, the copy in front of her let out a wisp of fog and the shape changed to leave behind a gray skeleton with crystal horns. They smiled soothingly at her.
“Are you calm now, Linty?”
She nodded and gazed at the other’s appearance for a second before concluding he was Shift. Was Vary around too?
Clawed hands took a hold on each side of her head and made it turn jerkily to the left.
Ouch.
Fierce eyelights glared at her.
There she was.
A shiver ran through her spine, she held tighter her precious burden, as the shapeshifter girl seemed ready to shout:
“LOOK. AT. LILI. YOU. DUMMIE. SHE. IS. NOT. DEAD!”
What? But she was so cold and didn’t react. Her fingers brushed against the child’s forehead, those she instantly removed as if burned. Warm. Perhaps even too warm. A glance revealed to her what she believed earlier was a perfectly stilled chest was in fact not. It was moving in coordination with a soft breath. “Too soft” urged her mind.
Her girl was alive? The monster brought Lili’s face close to hers and nuzzled softly in the crook of her neck. Relief flooded her system and she whispered small thanks to Life and Death for not taking away the child so soon. Then, she thanked the twins still standing next to her, concern written all over their faces.
“Are you feeling better?”
A soft yes was all she could let out to answer the 17 years old boy and his sister.
At the door, she could hear the hushed voices of curious children who would surely pour inside at the slightest sign hinting they were welcome.
She won’t let them in yet.
“Vary, can you hold onto Lili for a second?”
For once, any snarky comments the girl could have thought about stayed bottled up and she seemed momentally thoughtful.
Vary took out of a pocket a bunch of pictures and rummaged through them. She stopped her action to stare at one in particular. A thread of fog escaped her mouth and in the blink of an eye, her body was now one of a human woman with a big yellow fur coat. She grumbled something that sounded like “new friend you dunno her” to Lint before sliding her hands under Lili’s armpits and knees, freeing Lint from the charge. She then carefully lifted the child and recovered her from part of the oversized coat. The adult observed as her younger friend sat on the ground, back against the wall, silently waiting for whatever would happen next.
Only once she was convinced Lili was safe did she turn towards the other twin, asking for his help to go fetch some tools to turn the desert flower into a hopefully decent medicine. After seeing the tail’s boy disappearing around the corner, Lint took a brief moment to properly shoo away the orphanage’s kids.
She slumped back down next to Vary afterwards. What a chance the twins chose that day to visit…Maybe, they would still have some time to chit chat when everything would be done… It was a nice image to think about. The three of them, catching up like usual, with the children's banter in the background and the sight of Lili reading a book nearby.
As she felt herself slowly drift away, she hurried to drowsily give instructions on how to treat the plant resting innocently on a conveniently close chair.
"Just in time" it occured her when she woke up in her bed, finally well-rested.
She studied the cracks on the ceiling for an absurdly long time, not willing to move and discover what transpired when she was out yet.
Warm fingers wormed their way to hers.
She turned her attention in the direction of whoever was currently standing next to her bed.
Upon discovering who it was, she smiled and used her free hand to ruffle the other’s hair.
“Hello, Lili.”
