Self indulgence here, oc fanfiction.
Set in the Ducktales ‘17 universe. Ethan Cloud
Adult content story will include or mentionings of: drinking, swearing, sex violence, some slurs.
A/n I never know how to show song lyrics in writing XD forgive me. Soft start just set where ethan is so far.
-----------------------
A leaf in the wind ch. 1
A young hooded crow beat and bruised fell to the ground. Looking down at the water in the gutter beside him he spat out some blood. He looked over to the ones who who did this to him
"What, you gonna do just lie there Ethan?"
Ethan, the hooded crow grinned and got back up "Nah, I'm gonna get up and beat yo punk bitch ass next!" Ethan said as he wiped his beak clean. Popping his knuckles as he looked the other bird over. Angry and ready to let that all out and this guy was just the right punching bag.
"New places to go
I've got to leave
It's time for a show
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane"
Ethan belted out, along to the song playing as he made his way into his new apartment. Putting his load of boxes down and standing in the middle of the living room taking in the fact this was his new home now. Ethan was 22 now and finally making the big step into his adulthood. Moving out from his uncles’ home, after delaying that at least one year more but he was ready now. The place wasn’t much but it had what he needed at least. A single bed room with a connected half bathroom. A small kitchen that was big enough to put a table into. And the rest was the living room area.  It was a bit bitter sweet, to think he wouldn’t be waking up to the sounds of his uncle’s playfully bantering well making breakfast. Wouldn’t be the one to wake up his cousin, Damien because he was out cold from another all nighter. His time of self reflection ended when he felt a box hit him in the back, he looked back to see Damien behind him.
“Ethan!” He called out “You can’t just space out like that we're trying to get the last of your stuff inside.” the young magpie said, seeming a bit annoyed.
Ethan just turned around and took the box from him as he smiled. “Sorry got side tracked there.”  Walking over to the wall of boxes he placed the new on on the top of the stack. Damien joined him and looked over the boxes labels.
“Man you have a lot of junk. CDs, movies, one epsiode recorded vhs tapes, music sheets, headphones.” He started reading out loud then stopped “Why do you have a whole box for just headphones?”
Ethan just shrugged. “I just packed up anything that was mine or Uncle Clover and Jason said I could have. Like the VHS tapes, guess they were from when Clover was younger but they are all  random episodes of Mr.Rogers, or Bob Ross”
Damian was quite a moment as he looked over the boxes more. "Jeez it’s really starting to set in that your not gonna be at home anymore.” Damian said then coughed trying to cover up he said anything at all. “Just..kind of weird to think about. I mean cause you can barely take care of yourself I don't know how your going to make it past a week”
“I’m not that bad, I finally know how to make my ramen noodles the best way.” Ethan retorted like that somehow made sense to prove how much of an adult he was now.
“You still have trouble reading analog, I mean clocks with hands.”
“They are hard! Why can’t all clocks be digital now?”
“If you can’t read them why do you own one" Damian pointed out as he pulled a wall clock out from the box he had been carrying earlier.
Ethan just stared at it a moment trying to think about it, then gently rubbed at his chin as he scrunched up his brow in thought “uh so that's what they mean by time catches up to you.”
Damian just stared at Ethan in silence, he had no idea how to respond to that.
“Hey, are two already fighting? Ethan you may be moving out but I will still ground you.” Jason, a hooded crow like Ethan called out from the doorway holding a stack of boxes in hand. He was followed by a king fisher shortly after. Who was only carrying one box himself.
“Not really a fight dad, more concerned Ethan’s going to die within a week.” Damain said putting the clock away.
“Well that I can understand then. I think it’s more likely to be three days though.”
“Jason. That's not nice.” The king fisher stated as he walked over to Ethan and Damian. “Ethan worked really hard to earn enough money to finally move out, have some faith in our boy. Though this place isn't the best maybe we should wait another year for a better place to open."
"Don't even Clover you already got an extra year. It's time to kick him from the nest and fall on his own." Jason said as he set the boxes he had down.
"Don't you mean fly and leave?" Damien asked.
"Nope adulthood seems all awesome but it is the nosebleed section of your favorite bands concert but you're sitting next to a giant fan. And your next in three years kiddo." Jason said smiling smugly as he did.
"Wow dad thanks I feel the love."
"Oh don't mind him Damien he's just acting tough but losing Ethan is killing him and it'll kill him again when it's you maybe worse since there won't be anymore kids after you."
“I’m not the one who broke down in the van though.” Jason was quickly fired back with.
Ethan just smiled when watching Clover turn back around to gesture something to Jason. Little things like this is what he was going to miss. Damian bricking with him, his uncle Jason not putting up with it and his uncle Clover trying to be the peacemaker between them all. Not that anything was really ever said with malice, just normal family banter. Taking shots at each other that only they could do. Ethan frowned once everything was settled they would be leavening and this place would be quiet.
Ethan was pulled out his thoughts when he felt his uncle Clover suddenly hug him. Ethan smiled and hugged him back. It was a needed comfort. With his family it didn’t take long for Jason and Damian to join in as well.
“Man I can’t believe how old you are already.” Jason said being the first to pull away and ruffled up Ethans hair. “Feels like just yesterday you were brought to live with Clov and I. Now you're moving out and jeez I better stop before I turn into a sobbing mess like Clov was.”
“I wasn’t as bad as Damian” Clover said then looked guilty after letting that slip.
Ethan looked over to Damian after hearing that Damian was quick to pull away from the hug and looked at the floor. Mumbling about how he told Clover not to say anything about that.
“I’ll miss you too, all of you but you don’t have to worry I’m still around if you need me. I’ll be fine on my own. I'm not gonna lock myself in the bathroom or anything like that.”
The other three didn't seem too convinced, but they all just gave him a smile and nodded. Jason then looked down at his wrist to check the time. Clover peaking over to see as well as he frowned and sighed.
“Well everything is unloaded now we got to get the van back and head back home before it gets late.” Clover added
“Guy’s it fine, it's not like I'm going away I’ll call you and visit and you guys are always allowed to visit me when you want to.” Ethan tried reassuring all three of them. The uncertain looks not fully fading away but they all smiled at least.
"Yeah well look before we jet off, we have a gift for you Ethan." Jason said as he looked back to his husband.
Clover happily held out a warped object to Ethan holding on to Damian the moment Ethan took it from him. Ethan excitedly ripped the colorful paper away and smiled down at his gift. A framed image of his mother.
"A photo of mom?" Ethan asked looking over the picture.
"Damine found the original and was able to fix it up." Clover said proudly hugging Damien tighter.
"You don't really have any pictures of her so I thought it. Are you seriously about to cry?"
Ethan just nodded in response as he was tearing up looking at his cousin.
Boxes unloaded, Ethan walked his Uncles and cousin out. Goodbyes being trading back and forth the whole way out. Ethan kept waving goodbye from the sidewalk. Till the van was long out of sight. Home sickness hitting again but worse he looked up his building finding the window of his apartment. He knew he had stuff to start unpacking and start on this new life, slowly getting that he's on his own. He felt his phone start to buzz and fished it out from his jacket pocket. Seeing a text from his work friend Max, asking about meeting up with him and some of the others from work. That sounded better than being alone in that quiet apartment.
"Eh, I'll unpack later" he shrugged and said to himself

Pro wrestling au: I think it's time for Kuro to debut.
At one of VCW's Pay-Per-Views, Victory Road, the tag team titles were on the line as the One Winged Angel Ryder Argent and Omega Red fought to take back their titles from Axton Hekler and Gunter Kotch, the team of Mistral Mountain. They had lost them at the last big show, and they wanted them back with their rematch clause. Hekler was a man that stood at five feet and nine inches tall with an athletic and lithe build, and he had a rather glorious looking beard and mustache. Kotch was the larger of the two at six feet tall, with a bit more of a burly build and his beard was absolutely amazing beard that reached his chest in length, and was obviously well taken care of. It was in the final moments of the match, and both opponents had avoided all of Ryder and Red's attempts at putting them away with their finishers, which was something that shocked the crowd at every turn as Jace perfectly called the action on commentary.
Ryder ran for Kekler and attempted a V-Trigger once again, but this time Hekler dropped down with a basement dropkick and took out Ryder's leg, tripping him up and sending his face into the middle turnbuckle. Hekler then tagged in Kotch, and the larger man got in the ring as Hekler scrambled up to the top turnbuckle. Then, Kotch grabbed Ryder and lifted him up in an electric chair position, and after a second to steady himself, Hekler jumped off the top turnbuckle and hit Ryder with a flying clothesline, and when his forearm connected, Ryder flipped off Kotch's shoulders and hit the mat on his back. Hekler rolled through his landing as Kotch went for the pin and as Red was trying to get back in the ring after being beaten down outside, and Hekler launched himself through the ropes for a suicide dive, hitting Red and sending him back against the barricade.
Then the referee counted to three.
"Here are your winners and STILL VCW World Tag Team Champions! Axton Hekler, Gunter Kotch, Mistral Mountain!"
The referee raised Kotch's hand in victory as Hekler grabbed the belts himself, and he rolled back into the ring to hand one to his partner and both celebrated as the reigning champions, showing off their prizes to the crowd. "There you have it, ladies and gentlemen," Jace said on commentary, "After a hard landing for Ryder courtesy of a King of the Mountain, Gunter Kotch and Axton Hekler retain their tag team championships. After weeks and month of back and forth and Mistral Mountain studying and learning every single move of Ryder and Omega Red, they barely beat the two after Turning Point two months ago. But tonight, they completely had Ryder and Red's number, and now they get to keep the gold around their-"
"Oh this feels so good!" Hekler exclaimed after grabbing a microphone, "You people thought we couldn't do it! You thought we couldn't end the Dust Club's reign with these titles but look at us now! You thought we couldn't keep these titles, but you heard the announcer tonight!"
"These are ours!" Kotch yelled at them and held his title up high as the crowd began to boo, "The Dust Club can get their asses to the back of the line!"
Hekler laughed. "Damn right! These are ours, and we don't plan to lose them for a very, very long time!"
"Hey Axton!" Red said through a microphone he grabbed, panting heavily, "You wanna put your lien where your mouth is?"
Hekler looked toward Red and Ryder near the timekeeper's area at ringside and he laughed. "No chance, buddy. You lost, now get-"
"He wasn't talking about us..." Ryder spoke up next, holding his VCW Heavyweaight title in the opposite hand from the microphone, "You might have our number, I admit that, but... how about you face some opponents of our choosing and see if you can back up your claim?"
"Mystery opponents, Argent?" Kotch asked and chuckled, "You know what, I think if it's someone you choose, then we'd have no problem beating them just like we beat you!"
Red smirked. "You really wanna bet?"
Hekler and Kotch leaned in close with each other and whispered in each other's ears, and then Hekler raised his mic to his mouth. "You know what? You're on! Now who's it going to be?"
Ryder and Red started to laugh, and Ryder spoke. "Oh you two might have our numbers, but we know two people that have yours, and they're about to call..."
Just then, the lights went out and the crowd went to excited silence. A few moments later, the sounds of a violin sounded throughout the arena, and it came from the top of the stage as the spotlight shined down on one gorgeous Aliah Nero dressed in a black gothic kimono, a pair of black sheer stockings, and her normal boots, and black lipstick and eyeshadow, her custom black wood violin in hand as she played the opening violin part of a song called Angels Calling. She played that for around forty seconds until she stopped and flourished her bow a bit before pointing it high above her head towards the rafters. Several long seconds went by as the crowd cheered for her performance with her violin, wondering what the Faunus beauty would do next.
Then, she slowly lowered her arm and pointed her bow down towards the ring, towards Mistral Mountain.
Then, Raven's Flight began to blare loudly through the PA system as the lights came back on fully and standing just outside the spotlight on both sides of Aliah were Kuro Sabaton and Snow Blayze. Kuro was dressed in a pair of black pants that were tight toward the top but loose over his knees and calves and he wore black wrestling boots. His pants were simple with only dark red stripes going up the outsides of them. Over his torso was nothing but a black denim vest with patches of the logos of numerous metal bands, and around his shoulders was a mantle of black fur. His beard and hair were styled as they normally were, but he didn't have his usual bandana on. Snow was dressed in a pair of white wrestling boots and tight pants that were mostly white with crimson red kickpads at the bottoms of the legs, a crimson flag stitched into the back of it to hang down to the back of his right knee. He wore his white, tailed jacket with crimson fur along the collar. Under his jacket he wore a tight white muscle shirt with the dust club logo in crimson on the front.
"Ladies and gentlemen, they're here!" Jace exclaimed in excitement to the fans watching at home, "We've seen vignettes of these two for the last few weeks, but they're finally here! Kuro Sabaton, Snow Blayze, and Aliah Nero! That violin gave me chills!"
Soon, the two took their vest and jacket off respectively, and then they ran down to the ring to pick a fight with Mistral Mountain. The two went into fight or flight mode, both unsure of what to do. Kuro got to the ring first with his longer strides and slid inside, and Hekler and Kotch descended on him to try to take him out first. But, they were tired from their match and Kuro was completely fresh. Kuro pushed them both back nearly all the way across the ring, and then Snow jumped onto the apron and onto the top rope, and he springboarded himself toward Heckler and hit a wicked Van Daminator, just without a chair of course. Kuro ran forward and went for a clothesline on Kotch but he ducked and ran for the ropes, propelling himself off of them to try to take the larger man down but he was met with a thunderous big boot after Kuro bounced himself off the opposite ropes.
Aliah slowly sauntered down to the ring as Snow picked Heckler up into a fireman's carry, and then he ran toward the corner and hit a death valley driver into the lower turnbuckles, causing the crowd to cheer in unison. Kuro grabbed Kotch around the throat and stared him in the eyes, and then he lifted the Mistralian man up high into the air and hit a huge chokeslam, and then Kuro gave a roar, throwing his head back, his arms slightly outstretched as he made the devil horns gesture with his hands. He and Snow looked around at the crowd, hearing them roar and letting it pump them both up even further for what was about to happen next. Aliah stepped into the ring and walked around Kotch, twirling her bow around a bit before she looked to Snow and Kuro, and she gave them both a nod.
Kuro straightened Kotch up in the middle of the ring with his sides facing two opposite corners, and Aliah ordered Snow to go to the top rope, and he did so. Kuro went over to that corner and stood with his back to Snow, and then he held his hand down for Snow to step in. Then, Kuro slowly lifted Snow's crouched form into the air as high as he could reach, and then Snow slowly began to stand up straight in Kuro's hand, standing high above the ring. He raised his fist into the air and threw up the devil horns, and then he lowered it back down before he dove from Kuro's hand, his throwing his arms out to his sides as he made a half turn in the air, his back slamming down onto Kotch as he hit a picture perfect Swanton Bomb.
After that, Snow and Kuro grabbed Mistral Mountain's championships and held them high into the air as Aliah took the microphone that Red handed her, and she held both her violin and bow in her other hand. "Hello there everyone~" She greeted all the fans, "I hope you enjoyed this little show. I think it's time we introduce ourselves. Or would you like to, Ryder?"
Ryder grinned. "With pleasure. Heckler, Kotch, you probably shouldn't have accepted our proposal, and it's too late to back out now. Let me introduce to you the three new members of the Dust Club. "The Lion of Atlas", Kuro Sabaton and the "Arctic Assassin", Snow Blayze along with their gorgeous manager, Aliah Nero!"
The crowd roared even louder in response to that as Kuro and Snow laid the titles down over Kotch's chest and stomach. "It's our pleasure to join, Ryder," Aliah said to the heavyweight champ, "Since these two so graciously accepted out challenge, I think we can announce that at Genesis in two months, Mistral Mountain are defending their championships against Kuro and Snow. Goodnight everyone~"

Triple H and Cactus Jack face of in MSG, as discussed on Place To Be Podcast #250
On this week back in 2013, JT and Scott welcomed the voice of New Japan Pro Wrestling Kevin Kelly back to the Place to Be Podcast for the milestone 250th episode, for part one of their discussion on one on the WWE’s most consistently high quality years, 2000. In this edition, the guys talk about the legendary Triple H vs Cactus Jack feud from January and February, WrestleMania 2000, the debut of the Radicalz and much more, and it can be found right here.
Whilst you’re listening to that, have a read at this week’s written piece. This week back in 2016 Steve Riddle suffered for our enjoyment as he put himself through ECW December to Dismember 2006 for his Vintage Vault Preview series, focusing on the Extreme Elimination Chamber. Below, Steve looks the build up to the match and gives his thoughts on the match and also the rise of one CM Punk through the tail end of 2006 and into 2007.
Tumblr media
The two men the fans actually cared about in the Extreme Elimination Chamber
The Big Show vs. Rob Van Dam vs. CM Punk vs. Test vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Hardcore Holly in an Extreme Elimination Chamber match for the ECW Championship
As I mentioned back at the Survivor Series, CM Punk has been incredibly over with the crowd on ECW and was quickly becoming one of their top faces. It was also pretty well-known that he had a good relationship with Paul Heyman dating back to their time in OVW when Heyman was booking down there. However, the fall of 2006 was becoming a pretty tumultuous time for ECW as Heyman was continuing to lose influence in the brand and was becoming more disenfranchised as the days went on. With the recent addition of Bobby Lashley to ECW and the WWE’s commitment to make him the top face on ECW, their relationship with Heyman was nearing the breaking point. As ECW prepared for their first brand-specific PPV, it would be interesting to see if things can turn around or if this would potentially the final nail in the coffin between Paul Heyman and ECW, and it would be interesting to see how Punk would be affected by that with his main ally gone.
The build to this match has been building since the summer when Heyman and Show screwed RVD out of the ECW Title and RVD has been demanding his rematch with Heyman continuously putting the screws to him. Heyman would continue to build a stable to protect Show which included his own personal security guards, the returning Test, and eventually Hardcore Holly. On the 10/17 ECW, RVD would defeat Show in a non-title match to earn a future title shot and then on 10/24, RVD again defeated Show in a ladder match to earn the right to choose the date for the title match. The next week, Heyman announced that RVD chose to face Show at December to Dismember though he would again screw RVD over by announcing that it will be an Extreme Elimination Chamber match. That same night, Sabu would defeat Kevin Thorn to qualify for the match and a week later, CM Punk would defeat Mike Knox and Test defeated Tommy Dreamer to qualify. Later that night, Holly would officially turn heel and attacked RVD during a match, allying with Heyman as it was insinuated that he joined Heyman to take the 6th spot in the match. On 11/14, Heyman had the contract for the 6th spot ready for Holly to sign only for Lashley to attack Holly in the back, and he would come out and sign the contract to take the final spot. Later that night, Lashley would defeat Holly by DQ when Heyman’s crew got involved only for RVD, Sabu, and Punk to make the save. On 11/21, Punk would defeat Kevin Thorn in a match to build momentum and the next week, he would wrestle Test to a double countout while RVD defeated Sabu and Lashley defeated Show only for Show and Test to leave Lashley laid out after the match. It is a bit weird that the build went from Show/RVD to this where it was clear that Lashley was now being pushed as the top face, and given the health of Show by this point it was certain he would finally lose the title to somebody at this show.
Earlier in the night, we saw RVD and Punk mentally preparing for the match though later we saw Sabu laid out in the back and he was taken away on a stretcher while Heyman looked on. Later that night, Heyman would run into Hardcore Holly in the locker room and offered him Sabu’s spot in the match which Holly accepted. Needless to say, the crowd was pissed off with that decision as it seemed like this match was tailored made for someone like Sabu. Heyman then comes out to the ring with his personal security and gives a really good speech to hype the match, and he was still really top notch even though he was clearly starting to check out. The chamber is lowered as we see the weapons in the pods and Show comes out first, taking the pod with the barbed wire baseball bat and it is clear that he is not looking good and needs a long break. Punk comes out next to a big pop and enters the pod with the chair, followed by Test who was pretty hot as a heel and he takes the pod with the crowbar and finally, Lashley comes out to a decent pop and enters the last pod with the table. RVD comes out next to a big pop and Holly comes out last to decent heat and a key note is Show, Test, and Holly seemingly on the same page which Tazz continues to harp on at commentary.
RVD and Holly start the match and they lock up with Holly going behind RVD only for RVD to turn it around, but Holly hits a back elbow and he pounds on RVD. RVD catches Holly ducking with a kick and hits a clothesline only for Holly to come back with his own clothesline, and he pounds on RVD before stomping on him in the corner. RVD battles back only for Holly to reverse a whip and send RVD over the top onto the steel grate, and then he hotshots RVD on the top rope only for RVD to block a ram into the buckle and he hits a kick to the face. RVD goes up top and dives at Holly who moves only for RVD to land on the chains in a cool spot, but he misses a reverse crossbody and hotshots himself on the top rope. The crowd chants “ECW” as Holly hits a slam onto the grate before ramming RVD into the chains, and then he slams RVD onto the grate again before going up top only for RVD to catch him with a boot to the face. RVD rolls back into the ring and hits a modified Rolling Thunder by leaping over the top rope and landing on Holly in a great spot, but Holly blocks a suplex onto the grate and he suplexes RVD over the top into the ring for a two count. The two men trade blows on their knees until RVD hits a low dropkick only for Holly to get a kick in, and he hits a dropkick for a two count as the crowd chants for Punk and the time to the next entrant expires. Punk enters next with the chair to a huge pop and he tosses the chair in Holly’s face, and then he hits a springboard clothesline on RVD as the crowd chants for him and he tosses it at RVD only for RVD to catch him and toss it at Punk’s head. RVD sets the chair down and hits a rolling monkey flip that sends Punk onto the chair, but Punk grabs the chair and avoids the spin kick and a legsweep before hitting a jumping legdrop that drives RVD’s head into the chair which busts him open over the eye. Punk hits a springboard dropkick on Holly and then he wedges the chair in the corner, and he pounds on RVD before sending him head first into the chair. Punk snaps the chair around RVD’s neck in a nasty spot before going up top only for Holly to catch him on a hurricanrana attempt, and he whips Punk into the chains in another nasty spot for a two count. Holly throws Punk back into the ring and stomps on him as the crowd chants for Punk, and Holly hits a sidewalk slam for a two count and then he hoists Punk up and drops him stomach first onto the top rope. He kicks Punk into the chains and stomps on RVD before tossing Punk back into the ring, and he puts Punk on the top rope and pounds on him before going up himself and hitting a superplex. RVD goes for the pin and gets a two count and then Holly goes for the pin on Punk and gets a two count, and the crowd chants for RVD as Punk reverses a whip into the corner and hits the running knee on Holly only for RVD to catch him with a superkick. The time expires and Test enters next with the crowbar as he nails Punk with the crowbar, and he digs the crowbar into the cut on RVD in a wicked spot before stomping on him. He goes out of the ring and chokes Punk with the crowbar while bending him across the top rope, but Punk hotshots Test on the top rope as RVD hits a pair of clotheslines and a superkick on Holly. He grabs the chair and nails Test and Holly in the head with it before hitting the Van Daminator on Punk in the corner, RVD then goes up top and hits the 5-Star Frog Splash on Punk, getting the three and eliminating Punk which the crowd is not too happy about. This was a very interesting decision to have Punk get knocked out first and as mentioned, the crowd did not like this and I will delve further into this at the end of the match.
Test gets in the ring and measures RVD only to nail the big boot on Holly, getting the three and eliminating Holly though the ref doesn’t hit the mat three times so he clearly botched the elimination. RVD goes up top and hits a flying kick on Test before going up top again, and he flips Show off before climbing to the top of his pod as Show reaches through the chains and grabs his leg. Test goes up top with the chair and nails RVD with it twice before tossing him off the pod to the mat, and he puts the chair on RVD’s face before going up to the top of the pod and hitting the diving elbow in a great spot, getting the three and eliminating RVD which again pisses the crowd off. I have to say that even though he was clearly not looking right in terms of his body, Test has really looked impressive since returning and it was clear that he was being looked at as a top heel for the brand. He looks strong here by getting two eliminations and I give him props for taking that dive off the top of the pod, something you wouldn’t think a guy of his size would willingly do. Test takes the remaining two minutes by himself to recover from that bump and grabs the crowbar as the time expires and Lashley is set to enter next, but then the security guards knock the ref down and hold the door shut so Lashley can’t get out. Test taunts Lashley as he tries to figure a way out and then he grabs the table and rams it through the chains, busting a hole through the roof and he climbs out onto the top of the pod. Test goes up top only for Lashley to kick him to the mat and then he hits a clothesline off the top, and Test rolls onto the grate as Lashley follows him and pounds on him before whipping him into the pod which busts the glass open. Lashley whips Test into the other pod and pulls him back into the ring before ramming him into the buckle, and he pounds on Test until Test rakes the eyes and he pounds on Lashley. He chokes Lashley in the corner with his boot before grabbing the chair only for Lashley to kick the chair back in Test’s face, and he hits a pair of clotheslines and a suplex on Test. Lashley grabs the crowbar as Test grabs the chair and Lashley avoids the chair before nailing Test with the crowbar, and then he hits the Spear which gets the three and Test is eliminated. So we come down to the match that they pretty much wanted at the end of the day, and on paper this would be a pretty cool matchup if Show wasn’t as bloated and unhealthy as he was at the moment. Lashley grabs the table from his pod and throws it down as Show gets some tips from Heyman, and Lashley throws the table and chair into Show’s pod as the time winds down. Lashley grabs the chair and awaits Show as the time expires and Show leaves the pod with the barbed wire bat, and Show enters the ring and swings the bat repeatedly at Lashley who uses the chair to block it. Lashley rolls out of the ring and Show follows him and swings the bat again, but Lashley ducks and the bat gets caught in the chains as Lashley nails Show with the chair and pounds on him. He rams Show twice into the chains which busts him open and then he throws Show through the pod in a great spot, and he pounds on Show who busts himself through the other side of the pod. Lashley kicks at Show and pounds on him only for Show to toss Lashley over the top back into the ring, and Show hits a clothesline before setting up for the Chokeslam only for Lashley to escape with a DDT. Lashley pounds on Show only for Show to shove him into the corner, but he misses a charge only to catch Lashley on a crossbody attempt and he sets up for a running powerslam only for Lashley to escape and he hits the Spear, getting the three and we have a new champion.
I actually liked the match a lot more than most other people do as all six men worked hard and put on a solid Chamber match, though it was clearly a step down from previous Chambers. I thought all six men beat the crap out of each other and it was cool to have weapons involved, though what would’ve been cooler is having the weapons attached to the walls instead of in the pods thus limiting it to only four. I thought the choice of weapons was good as you had the reliable chair and table while the crowbar and bat were unique options even though the bat was never used at all. I thought RVD and Test had a good showing here as RVD lasts a while even with the nasty cut over his eye while Test looked strong too, and I’ve liked Test’s run since returning even though he was completely misshapen. As for the finish, I don’t mind Show losing because it was clear that he needed to get away and heal up, and he does the right thing here by putting Lashley over strong. I didn’t have a big problem with Lashley winning as he was clearly being set up as the top face on ECW, and as mentioned a Lashley/Show feud would’ve been pretty cool if Show was healthy. Now as for Punk and how he looked, this was an interesting thing because according to rumor he was the one chosen by Heyman to win the match and the title. He clearly belonged in the match since he was one of the most over guys on the brand, but at the same time they wanted Lashley as the top guy so Punk had to be sacrificed here though they were smart to have RVD eliminate him in the match. An interesting comparison I have for this is when RVD was in the main event at No Mercy 2001 and how they should’ve pulled the trigger on him there when he was at his peak. Obviously looking ahead, they didn’t wait as long to pull the trigger on Punk while they did RVD, but one has to wonder if having Punk lose here hurt his heat in the long run. It’s a catch-22 because I feel you have to have him in the match, but if you have him in there he either has to win or make it to the end. If they didn’t want to job him here, don’t put him in the match and have him go over Mike Knox again to blow that off since that feud pretty much faded away following Survivor Series. Again, it’s probably not a major issue that Punk didn’t win here, but it will be interesting to track and see how things turn out for Punk now that his biggest supported in Heyman will be gone. I thought the crowd was hot for the earlier parts though they did quickly die off after Punk and RVD got eliminated, but they did give Lashley a nice pop for winning the match. Lashley finally ends the reign of terror by Show and Heyman and is the new ECW Champion, and we will see what 2007 has in store for the enigma that is CM Punk.

EVOLVE 93 Live Review.
Tumblr media
MATCH RATINGS: -Cedric/Yehi 3.5 -Yehi/??? NR -Henry/Kincaid 3.75 -Drake/Theory 2.75 -Freelance 4-way 3 -DJZ/Darby 3.75 -TrollBoyz/Workhorsemen 2.25 -ZSJ/Lee 4+ -Riddle/Tracy 4.25 -The venue was great. Plentiful free parking, air conditioning (on a 90+ degree day), plenty of concessions (including good, cheap pizza), alcohol, clean and spacious bathrooms. Zero complaints about that building. A comfortable fan experience if I've ever had one.
-Zack Sabre Jr. is the most naturally over babyface the Evolve roster has. The ovation he received from the Summit crowd was loud and sustained, different from the reactions received by Keith Lee and Riddle. It's not easy to describe, but ZSJ got everybody on their feet the most of anybody, while guys like Lee and Riddle received louder chants from the audience. Then again, "Ooh, Zack Sabre, Jr." is always a hit among the live crowd.
-DJZ and Darby Allin had one of the most fun, succinct matches I have seen in a hot minute. Both are criminally underrated and linger in that "we'll do anything to put on a good match" territory -- including Darby diving from the corner post to a seated DJZ on the floor. Nuts! These two need more bookings elsewhere. I'd love to see Darby in AAW -- maybe a rematch of this one?
-Matthew Riddle is the best wrestler in the world when it comes to fan interaction. He is second to none in this regard. I could write a fucking novel about the ways he has gone above and beyond for me, including naming his finishing move after me. Yes, he has a move called "The Derek," and he uses it to close matches. Exclusively. Nobody has kicked out of it yet. (That I have a finish named after me, that I gave to a wrestler who is my favorite, that is protected to this degree -- that Matt even points at the move's rightful owner before he hits it... come on. What the fuck is even going on?)
-I felt the Freelance showcase was a little rushed, like the guys were trying hard to impress, which led to a little sloppiness. Matt Knicks slipped off the top rope and nearly ended himself right in front of me. I didn't need to see that. Beyond that, this was a fun match that got the crowd going. Lots of "Free-lance Wrest-ling" chants. I saw people buying Stevie Fierce shirts and Freelance merch, and honestly, isn't that what it's all about?
-I laughed at the antics of the #TrollBoyz, but they looked extremely... how do I say this? Checked out? They're clearly unhappy in Evolve, and they wear it on their faces. Maybe run the next Evolve show in the Knights of Columbus in Hamilton, ON and these guys will perk up a bit, I don't know. Beyond the Yehi squash, the tag title match was my least favorite of the evening.
-Seeing Cedric Alexander was a treat, but something about his appearance felt a little off. Maybe it was because it was for the live audience only, maybe it was because it opened the show. The match was one of the best of the night, but people were still filing into the building and a number of them missed this match. I think offering an exclusive match at the start of the show, when you open doors only a half-hour early, is a bit silly. Open doors at 7, do the show at 8. What's difficult about that? Gives people more time to give you their money.
-Fred Yehi is a treasure. An over-the-top nice person and a heck of a wrestler to boot. Big personality. Fred needs more bookings.
-Anthony Henry is a bona fide star in the making, and the match he got out of Jason Kincaid was wonderful. I phrase it like that because Kincaid's style of offense is so much lighter and he can't take that huge beating you like to see out of a guy. But he meshed extremely well with Henry here, and this match really helped shape the beginning of the show for me. I think I liked this more than Cedric/Fred.
-If I never have to see Jarek 1:20 ever again, that will be too soon. I got up to take a leak and talk to Shigehiro Irie during his segment.
-I was not impressed by James Drake and his high-waisted trunks. Austin Theory is jacked beyond belief at like, 19 years old, and I'm afraid to see what he's going to look like when he's my age (for numerous reasons). I just wasn't a fan of this match. Priscilla Kelly is always nice to have around, but she didn't add much to this one. Not a bad match, don't get me wrong, but it didn't burn down the house.
-It was fancy seeing Dominic Garrini in Evolve as Stokely Hathaway's enforcer. I think if they play up that angle -- that he is Stokely's protection from guys like Riddle -- that would be for the best. Dom more than looks the part, and he kills it in the ring, so this was a good call. Love me some Dom.
-ZSJ and Keith Lee was some hot soup, though! I went four stars-plus on that, because I'm a sap who does star ratings, quarter-star ratings and all that other stupid Meltzer-like stuff. Lee dominated throughout the 18 minutes, flattening Zack with chops and elbow strikes, with Zack selling like a bastard. The finish was a bit rushed, and I honestly wanted to see Zack win by blunt force as opposed to a lucky flash pin, but I'm also an idiot. (Yes, Derek, ZSJ winning via five straight penalty kicks is great business!) Good pacing, much different from the match that followed.
-Apparently to the viewer at home, Keith Lee's consistent attention he gave the guys seated right behind me played into the match, and led to Lee getting pinned at the end. From a live viewership perspective, this flowed completely organically. I thought Keith was legitimately upset with these legitimate jerks behind me, so he kept staring over at my side of the arena. But he kept doing it. It was weird, a bit, just how distracted by these guys he was, at one point jawing at them that what he was about to do to Zack was because of them. Brilliant move that it tied into the rest of the match, but again, from my perspective seated in the front row, I thought it was just crowd interaction.
-My match of the night was Bro vs. Sauce in anything goes. There were restrictions they had to work around here, due to the building -- for example, they couldn't use the crowd chairs the way they wanted, and they couldn't do anything with tables since they were plastic. They wanted to do more but what they delivered was nevertheless creative and inspired and left fans wanting more. There were some funky-looking spots in this one, don't get me wrong. A Bro-buster on the apron, a tombstone on an open folding chair, and a Van Daminator from Riddle to Tracy, but using Riddle's knee. A respectable blow off match. Now, leave it at that. Don't pull an Ego/Darby and keep it going.
-Chicago crowd was hot all night. The draw was great. I would say there were maybe 250 there? Maybe 300? I am bad with numbers, but I had joked about the potential for a bad draw going into this show, and Evolve well surpassed my wildest dreams. I give them credit. They delivered on their promises and I don't think anybody went home unhappy. A return date should be announced sometime in the next calendar year. I think the Detroit/Chicago loop is lucrative and will work well in Evolve's current show rotation.
-Finally, I just wanted to say I got zero beef with Gabe or anybody. I respect the booker man and I had a nice chat with him after the show last night. I was hesitant to approach him, because of the whole "Derek trolls people online sometimes with his criticisms" thing, but fuck it, we're just people. And Gabe is a nice enough guy to me, has always been decent to me. WWN and Evolve get a lot of trash, but personally speaking, I still dig them and they will have a customer in me going forward. (There is no Bullet Club-style finger gun to my head as I say this.)
Fun night. I'm still beaming. Check out a show if you can.
