Acting highlights - Lucas

Favorite acting moments from the mains for @renewskamfrance’s Appreciation Week - Axel Edition. In chronological order :

1. The eyebrow wiggle in Vendredi 17h12 “Et moi tu me dessinerais comment.” It’s such a small thing but it made me giggle out of happiness when I first saw it. It’s such an Even thing to do, and Lucas in this clip is so bold and charming - it anchors the reciprocity and playfulness of their relationship, and this clip is the one where I started falling for their version of the story. Right there he’s like ‘okay, bring it on, do your worst’ to Eliott, it’s almost like he’s daring him, and bold Lucas is one of my favorite things ever.

2. Lucas’s face just before the kiss in Vendredi 20h27 “Le premier.” These are quite possibly my favorite few seconds of the entire season. He’s stepped out of the dark and as he raises his hands, he’s letting Eliott know I see you, I know your story, I know who you are. And we believe, in that moment, that he is not afraid, wholeheartedly. There’s almost a hint of cockiness, in that moment, too, a hint of ‘gotcha’, he’s probably happy with himself for having figured it out too. But mostly this is the first time he’s telling Eliott you are not alone, and he feels so certain and sure about it. And he’s so effing thrilled at being part of it all. He’s making a choice, he’s stepping into his own life, his own story. He knows what’s coming and he wants it and he’s letting Eliott know !!!!!!!!!!!!!! god it’s all coming together so perfectly in that moment.

3. Gate punching because I like to suffer I guess. Method acting, wow. But in the whole clip, there is something just so intense and overpowering about Lucas’ rage and despair. We are just so there with him, I almost remember how my hand hurt after I watched the clip. I mean I don’t think actors should have to hurt themselves to show their commitment to the role but watching the clip i can totally understand why he did it - he just seems posessed by the role in the whole thing and Lucas’ descent into anger then despair, powerlessness and numbness and so he punches that gate because he has no other way to let the emotions out. Wow.

4. Intervention. The whole clip just...everytime I see it, I cry like a little baby. I am in awe of how Axel just went there so fully without witholding anything. The little waver in his voice as he says how the couch is his room actually, the lip wobble and ugly tears, the sheer raw despair as it all bursts out...it’s so painful and yet so cathartic as he finally lets it all out, everything that has been building up, and we live every single second with him.

5. Lucas’s tearful smile at the end of Jeudi 17:32 “C’est pas des adieux”. That smile just says so, so much. The weight of all he’s been through, the joy of it, the relief, the pride, the exhaustion, the longing, the sheer happiness. It’s in that moment where it seems he’s realizing the journey he’s just been on and how worth it it has been. He’s finally found someone he loves and that loves him just as much, he’s come out and accepted himself, and even though there was pain and fear and he’s basically having withdrawal symptoms over Eliott leaving, he knows he will get him back. And he’s letting himself bask in those emotions, after so long repressing them. He’s crying in the street and he doesn’t give a shit. It’s so powerful. It’s basically a reward for the hell they’ve put us through all season and just wow. If only for that smile, it was worth it.

I could go on forever, he’s incredible in basically each scene he is in but yeah, those are my personal favorites.

Lucas : Okay, so you're straight up giving me a suitcase full of beer!

Eliott : Yeah, I don't know. I have a lot of it here. I don't know why. You're down to drink one before your party?

Lucas : Totally.

Eliott : Cool.

Lucas : Did you do this?

Eliott : Yeah. But it was a while ago, I draw myself better now.

Lucas: Because that's you? The... what is it? A badger?

Eliott : A badger? That's a racoon. It's my favorite animal.

Lucas : The rat?? It's your favorite animal?

Eliott : The racoon! They're great. And they wear a mask.

Lucas : Okay, I see! And if you had to draw me? How would you draw me?

Eliott : I don't know. I have to think about it.

It's a pity tho, I have nothing to smoke.

Lucas : That's on me.

Eliott : Ah yeah!! Okay, right. You're not kidding!

E : Haha yeah I don’t know I have plenty at mine, I don’t know why. Do you feel like drinking one before your party ?

L : Definitely.

E : Cool.

L : *looking at drawings on the wall* Did you do these ?

E : Yeah. But this was a long time ago, I can draw better now.

L : Because that’s you there ? The ... badger ?

E : That’s a badger ? It’s a racoon (raton-laveur) ! It’s my spirit animal.

L : The racoon (raton) is your spirit animal ?

E : The racoon (raton LAVEUR) ! Racoons are amazing. And they wear masks.

L : Okay I see. And if you had to draw me ... how would you draw me ?

E : I don’t know. I need to think about it. But it’s stupid, I have nothing left to smoke.

VENDREDI | 17h12 | ET MOI TU ME DESSINERAIS COMMENT ?

At the end of each day in the writers’ room, I would write a new document. It was a recap of the work we had down, and soon enough it became a guideline of everything that would happen, how and when in the episodes. Some people think screenwriters come up with the general story, some even think we just write dialogues. In fact, our job is so much more than that. For instance, when I sent the document about episode 2, we already decided to break the friday clip in 4.

There’s a saying about screenwriting : constraints cultivate creativity. Time restraint is a bitch, yes, but we had to think about how to use it at our advantage. I know some of you miss those really long clips from OG. We love them too. But we always knew we couldn’t do that here... So how could we give the impression of longing, of time passing by without having the actual time to do it ? That’s how we came up with this.

I should stress right now the freedom and trust we received, and how special it was to work with such amazing people. Doing 4 clips means so much more work for everyone, and mostly for the shooting crew. But when David received the recap for this episode, he was immediately on board, as he’s been from the beginning. So was Carole, our producer. The same goes with the drawings : we actually came up with this idea later on, and implanted that in this episode when moving on to the dialogues. And even though it meant extra work, finding the right style, finding the artist, David came through. By the way, the amount of time the authors and I spent on deciding what animal Eliott would draw himself as was just... ridiculous. But once we came up with the idea of Polaris, it became kind of easier... :)

I wonder if Eliott ever thought of drawing Lucas, though (how cheeky was that by the way ?). And if so, I wonder what animal he would choose...
