SIM Card and Social Media Registration Act
UPDATE: IT’S BEEN VETO’D ALREADY! no need to reblog, thank you for the help.
Hi, something important’s been recently brought to my attention.
I’m a Filipino, and we need your help. I’m also just learning more about this now but I wanted to share and reach out. We’re urging our current President to veto this bill.
NOTE: Kindly correct me if I’ve mentioned anything wrong in here/accidentally added misinformation btw.
Basically, if this bill was to be approved, we’ll be required to use our REAL NAMES in all social media platforms.
And no, this won’t eliminate cybercrime or make anything any better. If anything, it jeopardizes our internet safety.
We only have nine days until our privacy and anonymity online is lost. This is serious. That means pen names, online aliases, and more will be illegal. It’s a what-the-fuck situation so we could use your responses and help by signal boosting this post and other posts related to this.
While I do not mind letting some friends i’ve met here know more about me, I do NOT want my full name in display for all strangers to see just as nobody would parade their damn name in a public space filled with strangers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
link to the thread
Tumblr media
here’s a link to the change.org petition with more information in the description.
Tumblr media
^ and here’s a link to more information on the issue.
Tumblr media
i value my privacy and i’ve always been encouraging having a safe space online with whomever people i meet here. pen names and aliases shouldn’t be considered criminal. we’re only people who want to be on social media for our own reasons and we deserve our anonymity and our safety.
Q: What can I do to help?
A: Sign the petitions, spread awareness about it and reblog posts related to this to make sure this issue does not go unnoticed. It would help us a lot.

reposting from my own Twitter thread
first tweeted on 11:25 AM, 02 March 2022 (Philippine Time)
Man, I don't know how I expect myself to concentrate in class today when the SIM Card and Social Media Registration Act is about to be passed into law on *Friday.* That bill is going to nullify our right to privacy and endanger our cyber safety. It's going to make us more prone to hacking/doxxing and, on top of that, makes red-tagging easier. I don't know how I'm supposed to go on about my day when there is a whole bill that is going to endanger us all. Sure, a lawyer may say that context is important when discerning whether the law was broken or not, but the bill's definitions were so vaguely written that discernment isn't enough. It shouldn't be, when the bill was supposed to definitively define and expound what it was supposed to be related to and what is permitted or not in the first place. People may say that it was supposed to be a counteraction to trolls and spreaders of misinformation, but what I'm reading is a weapon against those who are against... certain people in government. It's a weapon against activists journalists artists and even common, harmless civilians. Any- and everyone is at risk of being attacked, whether on the cyberspace or in real life. Who knows? I'm at risk, even if I say nothing about politics online. You're at risk, even if you don't use social media often. EVERYONE is at risk, no matter the frequency of our social media usage. At this rate, the safest way out of this is to not own any social media, but not having any social media contacts in this modern age? That can't be, not when having at least ONE is A NECESSITY. I know my voice may not even matter in the end, but I have to try. I have a right to privacy and safety on the internet.
Read the Act itself.
Read the statement urging for the current Philippine President to veto the Act.
Sign the petition. (locals only ; for foreigners, please share)
'Mandatory SIM card registration puts privacy at risk, might not curb crime' — Angela Y. Yang, Philstar.com
We are Filipino citizens who reserve the right to privacy and safety on the internet as well as the right to freedom of speech. It is in the 1987 Constitution, under Article III, Sections 3.1 (though conditional, it seems) and 4.
Tumblr media
Above is a screenshot of Microsoft Edge from my laptop. The tab is showing a webpage from the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines. The text shown is from Article III, the Bill of Rights, but the highlighted ones are Sections 3 (1) and 4. They read, "SECTION 3. (1) The privacy of communication and correspondence shall be inviolable except upon lawful order of the court, or when public safety or order requires otherwise as prescribed by law," and "SECTION 4. No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances," respectively.
The social media provision must be challenged first. We cannot let this law endanger us to predators on the internet.

Its serious and already caused a vast amount of stress in our community. This bill is deeply flawed and scary to everyone, especially to young social media users.
If this act is signed we will be exposed of personal information from our real names to addresses, leaving us and our children extremely vulnerable (to harassment, doxing, scams, kidnapping, and even child sexual predators.) PLS SHARE THIS AROUND.
The SIM card and soc med registration bill basically forbids Filipinos from using aliases or fictitious identities when it comes to things like SIM cards and social media accounts. Basically what they want us to do is to use our real names, and use our personal information on whatever online platform/social media we use if we want to keep using them.
This bill will do more harm than good, as it will especially affect content creators, artists, writers, closeted lgbtqia people, trans people and basically literally fucking everyone that uses social media under the protection of an alias. Our privacy will be literally a glass wall!!! Making it much easier to dox us.
We have 8 days to make the president NOT sign/veto it as of Feb 25, every single Filipino's privacy online is at stake.
Thank u for reading , pls take the time to sign or rb.

help schnoofle stay as schnoofle‼️‼️
hello! it's quite unusual for me to do these kinds of posts, but there's a new bill being proposed in the philippines called the "SIM Card and Social Media Registration Act" which forbids the use of an alias or fictitious identity online. it could get a person fined 200,000 pesos and get at least 6 years in prison and the law itself is extremely vague.
i'm not sure if change.org is effective but signing is appreciated, thank you!

Hey so there’s a new law set to pass in the Philippines in like a week
The law basically says that you have to use your real name on social media or else you have to pay a P200,000 fine (my apologies if I got the currency wrong) or go to jail for a minimum of six years (if you want more details read the law itself and the post here)
I think we can all agree thats some fucking stupid bullshit
It’s a gross violation of civil rights for literally anyone who wants to be private on social media or not risk getting hacked/doxxed
On a more personal note, I have some online friends who are scared out of their minds of this law and are saying if it passes they’ll most likely delete their accounts
If this includes Discord, we’d probably never have a way to contact each other again
On top of that, one of them has a fanfic which she’s poured her heart and soul into and as a writer it would be my worst nightmare to have to delete a fic that long that has also gained popularity
It’s not fair to have peoples hard work get deleted out of fear
If you live in the Philippines I highly encourage you to sign the petition they have on the link. I’ve been told if you don’t live there, it’s basically useless to sign it
So if you don’t live there please boost this and read the thing linked above to see what you can do to help
I don’t want to be separated from my friends and all Filipinos should have the right to have privacy on social media
To Filipinos I’m sending y’all my love and support

While I don't think it will do much, the petition's almost complete, so I signed it anyway. BTW don't "chip in", as change.org puts it, since what they do with the donation money is very sketchy.

The Filipinos and I will be forced to put our private and sensitive data on our social media accounts (such as addresses and phone numbers). This puts our online safety at risk and might even force people to stop using certain sites for protection. So please sign this petition and spread it around!!

Fellow Pinoy. I have a question. Will the petition have issues if foreigners sign it?
I've been told that there was a case of a petition being invalidated because most of the signatures were from a different country trying to help, than the citizens.
I don't see a lot of Filipinos here on this site, honestly.
Hi! I’m sorry for this but to be honest, I also don’t know.
But if that happens, so far, I’ve seen several Filipinos reblogging my post about it and there’s been action on Twitter that I’m relieved to see where more information about it is being raised (thankfully) so I hope that most of the signatures are from ours.
Even so, if the petition was to be considered invalid, I hope it’s still taken to mean that the majority disagrees with it.
Feel free to let me know if you hear more about it, though. (Or add on to this if you know something) Stay safe, wherever you are ! :)

My brain: the SIM Card and SocMed Registration Act is not retroactive, as far as we're concerned. You're fine.
Me: It may not be retroactive but it will actively risk everyone who has yet to create any social media. If it's going to require us to share personal and sensitive information before we get to use social media... that's like asking us to strip naked before throwing ourselves to the wolves.
It forbids the usage of fictitious identities when registering accounts, meting out the draconian punishment of a minimum of 6 years in prison and/or a fine of up to ₱200,000. Essentially, it criminalizes anonymity and pseudonymity on the Internet – legitimate norms used by individuals who wish for privacy, artists/writers who use pen and stage names, parody/entertainment accounts, activists, dissenters, human rights defenders, LGBTQI, victims of abuse and violence, witnesses, whistleblowers, investigative journalists, and legitimate cybersecurity research and law enforcement operations.
Even the leaders who shaped our nation’s identity made use of fictitious names to freely express themselves: Jose Rizal (Laong Laan, Dimasalang), Antonio Luna (Taga-Ilog), Marcelo H. del Pilar (Plaridel), Andres Bonifacio (Agapito Bagumbayan), Emilio Jacinto (Dimas-Ilaw, Pingkian), and many others. In essence, were our heroes alive today, the state would be branding them as criminals.
Moreover, the requirement that corporations like social media providers mandatorily collect real names and private phone numbers even when they are normally optional, puts Filipino citizens in jeopardy. From a cybersecurity perspective, the law is creating additional vulnerabilities for individuals because of the potential for data breaches. Even the most well-funded companies and institutions are not immune to hacking and data leaks, like what happened to Yahoo in 2013 and 2014 and Facebook in 2019 and 2021 where the names and personal phone numbers of users were spread on the Internet. Should these reoccur and citizens’ names and phone numbers leak, it will open them to harassment, identity theft, financial crime, and other forms of harm.
Aside from these, the bill poses a dire threat to children’s safety. Forcing children to register with their real names on social media like in online games or communities may expose their real names to complete strangers on the Internet, opening them to harassment, doxing, scams, kidnapping, and even child sexual predators.
— from Democracy.Net.PH
Filipinos (especially those who live in the Philippines), sign the petition.
Foreigners, please share and spread awareness.
We still need 9,332 signatures for it to be printed and sent to the president.

there's a worrying bill that will pass in the Phillipines that will force internet users to essentially doxx themselves D: do you think you can help spread the word on it and encourage people to sign a petition against it?
there's info of it on twitter under the tags #VetoSIMCardReg, #VetoSocMedReg, and #BlockSIMRegistration
Man. Okay so I looked around for some stuff that better explains it than I do djdhdjd but it’s v worrying because it directly infringes on people’s right to privacy and anonymity
It’s finished and passed the third and final reading back in I think December or January, so now it’s awaiting only the president’s signature to be effectively passed.
Tumblr media
Here is an article that summarizes it in English
And here is the link to the petition (though only sign it if you’re Filipino otherwise it gets nullified)
Feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong, but that’s my understanding of it

gonna leave this here because i'm scared now
i don't usually do posts like these but i just have to
basically, if this law becomes a thing and we don't stop it, we have to sign into the internet with our real names and using fictional identities will result in about 6 years of jail.
problem is, there's SO MANY THINGS WRONG WITH THIS. pen and stage names are now illegal for artists and writers, people who just want to stay anonymous because it's normal, EVEN CHILDREN WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS, making them more prone to hackers, doxxing, and child predators. the list goes on.
i worry because this'll probably apply to philippine content creators and streamers as well, like me. a lot of these people make content under a certain username or identity and it's normal. my subs don't even know my real name! i'm probably overthinking...
so please, PLEAAASEE SIGN BECAUSE I'M SO SCARED FOR US ALL D:
you can read more about it here, btw: https://democracy.net.ph/vetosocmedreg/

Hello! I remember you've been reblogging that one post of mine about the SIM Card & SocMed Reg Act — the one with your addendum (appreciate that, by the way, since I didn't want to expound on it by myself at the time). I thought you might like to share this one as well, since I actually found the time to write about it comprehensively I think.
Thank you for your hard work and I hope that we won't have to face the worst.
