now your hope and compassion is gone you've sold out your dream to the world stay dead, stay dead, stay dead you're dead and out of this world
Woke Stella and Lila up from hibernation for @thebramblewood's vampire party! These lesbian fashionistas love extravagance and gory public displays of affection. You'll probably catch them drinking blood out of champagne flutes and/or making out on a victorian chaise. Have fun with them!

A Night at the Opera, Part II
What to wear?
From The Art of Dressing Well: “The hair should be dressed as for a large evening party, and artificial flowers, jewels, feathers, ribbons, or any style of head-dress peculiar to the fashion may be worn.” “Jewelry must be worn according to the dress, but more is allowable than on most occasions, and the glittering gems are very effective in the brilliant light of a superb opera house.”
Tumblr media
James Tissot (French, 1836-1902) • La Mondain (The Lady of Fashion) • 1883-85 • Private collection
There are myths about Victorian women's dress requirements that must be debunked. Firstly, only the ultra-rich could afford to have enough outfits to accommodate the many activities of a busy day. The reality was that women added and shed certain accessories for different activities, without changing their dress five times a day. If she was wearing an afternoon dress but going for a walk, she wouldn't necessarily run to change into a specific walking dress but instead find a hat and parasol and perhaps take off her shawl and replace it with a cape.
Likewise if she were to be invited to the opera. The dress she would choose wouldn't be one that could only be worn to the opera. Instead, the Victorian women would choose her most formal dress, add her best jewelry, and if she had them, wear an opera cape and bonnet. If she did not possess the latter, she could borrow them or make do with her best coat. That woman may not have been among the fashionistas in the audience, as described below, but maybe she enjoyed the opera and didn't care. I get a bit of pleasure imaging that at least a few women didn't give a toss about what others thought! This in spite of my interest in fashion history!
One source stated that it was typical for women (and perhaps men?) to dress according to where they sat but it was not elaborated upon. I assume the more expensive the seating, the fancier the dress.

“Well-dressed as well as handsome ladies are looked for in the audience of an opera, and it is out of harmony with the scene and surroundings to see sombre draperies, heavy bonnets, and dull faces. Ladies are supposed to be seen, as well as to see, and are often the most beautiful part of the display. They should not spoil the beauty of the auditorium by wrapping themselves in cloaks or shawls.” -The Art of Dressing Well

When you can't afford the Haunted Beauty Mistress of the Manor Barbie (2014) so you make your own... out of a doll you saved from the trash no less!
It was SO difficult to keep this set to just ten pictures, so there will definitely be a details and before-and-after post on the way.
Component parts and the story of this gal's months-long creation under the cut:
Head: 2015 Fairy Godmother Barbie (Helena Bonham Carter face sculpt), with face completely repainted and hair rerooted in extra-long kanekalon
Body: Tennis Player Barbie
Dress: made by modifying a Victorian wedding gown pattern by u/MyMisfits on reddit
Necklace: constructed out of ribbon and a nail charm
Boots: Barbie Fashionista boots repainted black
Book: new custom print made by me, book template by myfroggystuff on YouTube
Keys: key-shaped beads strung on a hair decoration loop
Candelabra: constructed from beads, wire, and q-tip sticks
Funny enough, this gal is the "sister" of my Christmas Tree Angel Barbie. I used the leftover body and head from this project's component parts to make that doll!
I knew I wanted to re-create this doll with my own spin for a long time, but struggled to find a base with the right face shape (the original has a special custom collector face mold that isn't found in regular Barbies...befitting a doll that retails for $800+). Then, one day one of my neighbors had a box of stuff marked "free" that was otherwise going in the trash can, and in it was a VERY worn-out and dirty Fairy Godmother Barbie. The face shape was perfect (after all, doesn't Helena Bonham Carter often play spooky roles like this?) so I cleaned up the doll, rid her of her matted old hair, painted a new face for her, and gave her a new poseable body.
I didn't just re-create the original doll's dress an accessories either; I tried to put my own details into them. That book is fully printed on the inside... I'll show off the text in a future post! I also had to give her my signature elaborate hair compared to the original's prim and proper bun.
This was months of work, including gathering parts, rerooting the hair, learning different sewing techniques, learning new prop construction techniques, and troubleshooting issues like the glue not setting on the candelabra pieces. This is one of my most elaborate customs and I'm very proud of the result.

ᴘᴇᴛᴇ ᴡʜɪᴛᴇ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ
✦ He calls everyone "fella," including you. But you're his special fella. He'll call you different kinds of pet names behind closed doors, if you'd like. ✦ Pete is a total fashionista. Point blank period. I KNOW he's going to want to dress you up sometimes, if you allow him that is. He'd get you matching outfits. ✦ He'd even let you do his hair, nails, and makeup. He doesn't care what style you're into, he's going to indulge in it simply because it's you who's doing it. ✦ He's also a diva. He is very overdramatic. He's the type to overexaggerate his thoughts and emotions. The back of one of his hands would place itself on his forehead while the other flies to his chest while he expresses his deep anguish for the fact that you drank the last bit of coffee. ✦ His sarcasm gets the best of him sometimes. Like, he'll make remarks and then blow you off, but it's all in good fun. There's nothing serious about it when he's like this around you. ✦ The sun burns him up due to his albinism, so he stays indoors a lot of the time. A huge part of him feels bad about this, considering he can't take you out as often as he'd like. The solution: night dates! ✦ He would have a notebook that's full of heart doodles with your initials in them, right next to his science equations and all. ✦ Expect a lot of lazy cuddles. He'd much rather spend time with you like this than working on some godforsaken project. But alas, duty calls. When he gets back, the first thing he does is pull you towards the couch and tosses his limbs around you. ✦ He has a parasol that he holds with both hands to shield him from the blazing sunlight. So instead of holding hands with you, you link your arm around his. You both look like a romantic Victorian couple. ✦ Nose kisses! He's a big fan of when you two rub your noses together. It sparks a different sort of intimacy in him.

Well, I was reading about Victorian fashion and tuberculosis and arsenic came out, oh humanity.... and I remembered that you love the Victorian era and I said... we'll talk about your opinion, well if you want to
"Good taste is essentially a moral quality. What we like determines what we are." - John Ruskin. (19th century)
This quote comes to my mind whenever I think about the Victorian fashionista. It rings true for the late 19th century person as they were incredibly materialistic and fond of trends, not at all unlike what we do today.
The industrial revolution changed everything, and the people of the time (much like us now) were rushed through the sudden boon of technological advancement on and in every field.
Fashion, trends, were no different.
Tuberculosis, aside from being an actual illness, was also a popular stylish trend - The modern equivalent would be something similar to Heroin chic. It romanticised the meek and fragility of a sick (nearly dying) person.
There was something, apparently, utterly gothic and romantic about the threshold of death itself knocking on somebody's door. The escapism of imagining yourself being sickly, melodramatically fainting, by your side your lover doting at your every need was.... well, trendy.
There was a ton of short stories and full-on novellas that involved a character (side or main, or romantic interest) suffering with the ailment. Not just women! Sickly men was all the rage as well.
"The green death, a fashion to die for."
Scheele's green was invented by Carl Wilhelm Scheele who was a Swedish pharmaceutical chemist (Note that he was also German and did prefer to speak German over Swedish.) This colour was used in everything from wallpaper to children's toys, to clothes.
Long story short, the paint contains various poisons that does what poison does best: Kill you slowly.
Not only was it highly flammable, it was also a toxin that you could breathe in and get gradually sicker over time of exposure, as well as being potent enough by touch alone that you could get sick from handling it too much.
Children died for licking toys painted in the stuff, for some reason kids also licked the wallpapers(???). Parrots died in rooms where the wallpaper exposed them to the toxic air. This also contributed to the myth that going to the seaside and breathe in the "healthy salty winds" would make you better. Most likely, just holding your breath would do just as good.
Young women not only fainted from wearing the colour, they also caught very easily on fire. Which was already a risk for women, as matches lit very easily and the cringles of dresses often got caught by neglectfully standing by fireplaces. But this shit ignited when exposed too long to the sun or heat.
DESPITE that people caught on FAIRLY EARLY MIND YOU that this new fashionable green colour was HELLA DEADLY...... It was just too bitchin' cool to wear, that most trendy women and men lift their digit fingers and said "worth the risk" and subsequently suffered for the art of fashion.
