New York City is the most iconic and most visited city in the United States. With its distinctive skyline, diverse neighborhoods, world-class museums, incredible Broadway productions, and melting pot of cultures, NYC attracts millions of visitors each year. (It’s also the place I call home.) New York City is huge. I mean, ten million people live here. Where do you stay when you’re here? There are so many hotels to choose from. To help you plan your visit and narrow down your options, here’s my list of the best hotels in NYC: 1. East Village Hotel Located in the East Village, my absolute favorite neighborhood in NYC, this boutique aparthotel is run more like an Airbnb than a traditional hotel. You get sent a code before arrival to check in, and there’s no staff or restaurant on site (though an outpost of The Bean, a popular NYC café, is right downstairs). The studio apartments are designed to reflect the neighborhood’s bohemian spirit, with contemporary artistic décor, beautiful exposed brick walls, and lots of natural light. The kitchenettes include a stovetop, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, and silverware. Rooms include comfy pillowtop beds, showers with good water pressure, a flatscreen TV, and complimentary bath products. Everything is pretty compact, but in an area with few hotels, this is one of the best-value spots. Stay here if you want to be in a central location with tons of great restaurants and bars at your fingertips.   2. The Marlton Originally built in 1900, this historic boutique hotel in Greenwich Village has been home to many of the area’s bohemian set, including one of my favorite writers, Jack Kerouac (he even penned a few novellas here). I like that the hotel’s extensive renovations still kept its classic aesthetic. The beautiful interior has a stately feel, with ornate moldings, herringbone parquet floors, and vintage furnishings like brass light fixtures, ornate rugs, and custom-made furniture. The staff are super friendly too. The rooms are pretty small, but well designed to make use of the space. They come with flat-screen TVs, comfy beds with plush bedding, wardrobes, minibars, and marble bathrooms. The Marlton is also home to an excellent bar that serves incredible cocktails, and there’s a complimentary breakfast available too. I think it’s the best value for your money in the area.   3. Vocabulary: The Franklin This three-star hotel is in a 19th-century brownstone in the Upper East Side, the neighborhood I live in (if you see me, say hi!). The rooms here are simple, but the hotel has some great perks, like a free 24-hour espresso bar and a standard late checkout time of 12 p.m. The restaurant is currently being renovated, so there’s no breakfast available on-site, but there are tons of places just steps away. The rooms are decorated in a minimal (but cozy) style, with white-painted chandeliers and cute original art. All rooms come with large TVs and comfy pillow-top mattresses, while their larger rooms come with a desk and easy chair. Everything is newly renovated, and the glass-enclosed showers have excellent pressure. The location is great too, as it’s on a quiet, leafy street close to Central Park and Museum Mile.   4. Hotel Indigo This four-star hotel is dedicated to supporting local street art and artists, and you’ll see plenty of their work throughout the building. The rooftop bar, Mr. Purple, is a favorite among locals for fancy cocktails, and on the weekends, the area turns into an upscale club. (Because of that, it’s a 21+ hotel.). There’s even a heated pool on the rooftop too. The rooms boast hardwood floors, bold artwork, and floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views over the city. All rooms also include Keurig machines, desks, and a minibar (for which you get a $20 USD credit). The bathrooms are large, beautifully tiled, and feature rainfall shower heads. While there’s no breakfast served on site, you’re just steps away from tons of great eateries open at all hours. Overall,
I think this hotel is the best place to stay if you want to experience NYC’s legendary nightlife.   5. The Standard The Standard is one of the best hotels in the city (I think this East Side location is even better than the one in the Meatpacking district). The bar serves some of the best drinks in town and is usually always packed with NY’s fashionable set. There’s a café where you can get breakfast in the mornings too. The recently renovated rooms are gorgeous, decorated in a minimal design with bright pops of color and lots of natural light thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. They’re pretty big too, especially by NYC standards. All rooms at this four-star hotel feature plush beds, fluffy down pillows, huge flatscreen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, cozy bathrobes, work desks, and stocked minibars. The bathrooms are spacious, with tiled walk-in showers and organic designer toiletries. You’ll also get complimentary access to the nearby Crunch gym (in case you want to work off all the delicious food from the plethora of nearby restaurants).   6. The Library Hotel Everything at this four-star hotel is book-related. Each of the ten floors has a different theme, and all of the 60 rooms have dozens of books that fit within that theme (the hotel has a collection of over 6,000 books!). There’s also a Reading Room lounge with work desks, cozy nooks for reading or writing, and 24/7 coffee, tea, snacks, and drinks. Guest rooms are a good size (for NYC) and feature rich wood furnishings in a sleek, contemporary design, with plush bedding, minibars, flatscreen TVs, desks, and luxury bath products. There’s also free breakfast, a rooftop terrace with a bar that serves literary-themed drinks, and really helpful staff. It’s a quiet respite from an otherwise busy and loud neighborhood. Stay here for a unique experience that’s close to major tourist sites like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Grand Central Station.   7. The Sherry-Netherland Located on Fifth Avenue, right across from Central Park, this ornate five-star hotel is housed in a stunning Beaux-Arts building. The lobby boasts vaulted, painted ceilings and custom-made chandeliers, and the elevator even has a white-gloved operator, just to highlight how upscale this property is. The property’s Italian restaurant serves breakfast in the mornings, and there’s a fitness center available too. The spacious rooms are elegantly decorated, with mahogany desks, tasteful art on the walls, and large marble bathrooms. All rooms include flatscreen TVs, luxury bath products, complimentary soda, mineral water, and chocolates, and daily newspaper delivery. This is the place to stay if you want to splash out on a classy and timeless NYC hotel experience.

The beast beyond the door and 3 mining towns
Monday, November 9th, 2020
CAL - Well, another week has passed and life at the House of Art and Mirrors remains as interesting as it sounds. Just a few days ago, I was taking my mid-morning nap at the foot of the bed when I heard the most graceless thud just outside of the front door.
Awoken from my slumber, I begrudgingly approached the door to investigate. I could hear a large beast on the other side; it was sniffing around the perimeter of the studio. It sounded as if the animal had a nose the size of my entire head. I briefly questioned whether or not it was even a cat (though later that day I determined it was a cat, as everyone knows, non-cat lifeforms are only a myth).
Tumblr media
At first, I felt scared, but I also knew that I had to learn more. I incessantly smelled my side of the door and even tried to push it open. I begged Michele to let me out, but she refused.
Eventually the beast retreated. The rest of the day unfolded as usual and I had just started to slip into my early evening nap when the beast came back. This time I could hear it stomping around the front yard, each time it stepped on the dried leaves, the quiet air was filled with the loud sound of the leaves crunching underneath its enormous paws. I estimate it must weigh over 500 pounds.
The rest of the week unfolded in a similar manner. I felt constantly on edge and patrolled the door several times each day. I was finally starting to settle into a routine with the beast when something truly unthinkable happened. The large, bald one was returning from disposing of my used litter when I heard the unmistakable trudging of the beast heading right toward Michele’s familiar footsteps.
I could hear the beast lunge at her and I prayed for the best, but prepared for the worst. I heard voices followed by some more tussling in the leaves. After what seemed like forever, the large, bald one returned. She brushed right past me and smelled of the beast. I took to my hiding place behind the refrigerator.
MICHELE - Today is Sunday afternoon and after nearly two weeks in Bisbee, I am proud to report that I finally left my room to explore. The first stop was The Bisbee Breakfast Club, a small diner in historic Lowell. The town was consumed by the evacuation of an open copper mining pit in the 1950s. Only one street survived and the residents fled the town leaving behind storefronts, cars, and a vintage Greyhound bus. They even have a fully preserved Shell gas station, complete with the old gas pumps that provided leaded fuel. The diner is the only business that operates here, which makes the whole place even more surreal.
After an absolutely delicious breakfast, I continued the theme of towns frozen in time by visiting historic Tombstone, which is a short 30 minute drive from Bisbee. Tombstone was exactly what I thought it would be, complete with guys dressed up like cowboys, tipping their hats to all the tourists. The town, founded on a silver mine, survived until the 1930s. Today it’s a mix of gift shops, restaurants, and old timey saloons. It was definitely cute, but browsing gift shops is only interesting for so long.
I spent the rest of the weekend in old Bisbee, an example of a mining town that was successfully revived after their copper mines were shut down in the 1970s. The town is so charming I could hardly stand it.
Downtown is littered with colorful houses built into the sides of the two hills that flank Main Street. The entire corridor is filled with galleries, and coffee shops and even has a beer brewing district. At one point, I stopped for a cup of coffee and stumbled upon a vending machine that sells art from local artists. Every piece was $20 from which half of the proceeds go to the local art commission and the other half to the artist. I ended up buying a 3 x 2 inch painting by a local artist named Catdaddy Gillespie. I can't help but think he must be a cat guy.
Back at the House of Art Mirrors, I acquired a new neighbor this week, who is traveling with the cutest dog that I have ever seen. During the day his dog roams our shared yard and makes sure to greet me every time I leave or return to the studio. I’m pretty sure that he is even starting to make friends with Cal. It really is cute to watch them sniff each other from opposite sides of the thin metal door.

And I won’t lie: I was tempted. I love cycling around the city. I was feeling like I’d better figure out a way to do cardio workouts at home. But I couldn’t imagine parking some sci-fi “Tron” cycle in the middle of my retro living room, amid my old books and vintage furniture. I needed a cardio machine that took up less floor space, and looked less like it had been teleported from the year 2050, to remind me that if I want to live to see that year, I’d better start working out more. So I read every home-exercise guide I could find, then settled on cheap resistance bands, which made me feel clumsy, and mostly stretched my patience. Eventually, I spotted a WaterRower online and immediately fell in love with the low-tech, wooden rowing machine—partly because, in a world of futuristic exercise equipment promising to disrupt exercise as we know it, it is reassuringly old school. I love that it’s basically the exact same device that was invented by a Yale engineer in 1988, and manufactured in Rhode Island from locally sourced wood. More importantly, when I last checked, it’s the only piece of stationary exercise equipment that looks so good in a living room you can buy it from the MoMA store.  $1,160 at Amazon It stores upright, so you need only 22 inches by 20 inches for that. And when upright, the WaterRower cuts a lean, sculptural figure at nearly 7 feet tall: long, simple planks of blonde ash wood, extending up from the bulbous, clear water tank at its base. It looks less like exercise equipment and more like an eccentric prop for a vintage Paul Thomas Anderson movie (though its most famous on-screen appearance was in “House of Cards,” as the Wall Street Journal newsroom reported). When I strap in for a workout, it looks like it belongs on my hardwood floors. Not like I’ve been invaded by Equinox. Another benefit: It’s quiet. As someone who spends his days writing screenplays and watching movies, I often find my biggest problem with actually going to a gym—and with most in-person human activity, honestly—is that I have to stop watching my beautiful, big TV. But unlike so many workouts that demand your full attention, or exercise bikes and air-resistance rowing machines that make tons of noise, the WaterRower is so unobtrusive that I can hear the TV clearly over the whooshing water as I work up a sweat. I never rowed before—I’ve vaguely regarded rowing as the hobby of bad guys in teen movies—but it’s now been a part of my nearly daily routine for two years. And my wife, who doesn’t have to adjust a thing even though she’s a few inches shorter, has joined my crew. (My editor says this is where I have to remind you that you should consult your doctor before starting a new fitness routine so you don’t pull a muscle or even, as The Wall Street Journal newsroom reported, pull a Mr. Big.) I purchased the basic Natural model in ash for $1,199, which felt pricey upfront but, over the two years, has been a bargain compared to a big-city gym membership.
People have asked me if the water gets murky; mine has stayed crystal clear, though the company does offer a free “purification tablet” in case. If you love internet-connected classes, WaterRower’s in-house and third-party apps might be for you. But the standard model’s simple, included performance monitor is enough for me. I  bought the optional Bluetooth adapter ($59.95), but I rarely use it—and I don’t like the idea of paying a subscription fee to watch some trainer yell at me on an LED screen. Instead, I track my workouts and monitor my heart rate on my Apple watch. And, mostly, I just use this wooden machine to enjoy a straightforward full-body workout that taxes 80-plus percent of my muscles, like I’m still in 1988: I fold it down, I row until I’m drenched in sweat, and then I stand it back up. And I feel better. THE ENDURING APPEAL OF ART DECO - WHY DOES ART DECO FURNITURE APPEAL A CENTURY AFTER IT'S BIRTH
Art Deco remains one of the most popular styles of Vintage Glassware furniture on the marketplace for collectors and people searching for an intriguing centrepiece for their home.
WHAT IS ART DECO?
Art Deco design dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, sprouting from the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th Century, and becoming the predominant style of the era. The name Art Deco comes from a French expression meaning decorative art but wasn’t coined to describe the era’s style until the 1960s.
Easily recognisable by precise and bold geometric shapes and vibrant colours, Art Deco design was used readily in architecture, fashion, transport, Edwardian Furniture design and household objects, such as lights and lampstands.
Art Deco brings to mind the roaring 20s, the era of prohibition and speakeasies, Jazz in Paris and Berlin cabaret nightclubs before the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression of the early 1930s. As well as Art Nouveau, Art Deco bears similarities to Modernism and Bauhaus but remains enough unique features to be easily distinguishable from other period pieces.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE
Art Deco furniture is crafted from exotic woods, such as ebony, zebrawood and rosewood, with inlays of other types of wood and then finished with Japanese lacquer to provide a smooth, glossy look and feel. Decorative embellishments are added with geometric designs such as starbursts, sunshine rays, zigzags and straight-edged floral patterns. In addition, inlays using ivory or mother of pearl were often added to provide a further flourish to sideboards, dressers and dining tables.
Animal hides, stainless steel, serpent skin upholstery and veneered or lacquered wood are features of Art Deco era seating, particularly lounge and armchairs.
Most Art Deco Cheap Vintage Furniture pieces were not generally designed with mass production; however, stylistically, the movement celebrates machine production, simplicity, modernity, geometry and symmetry. One of the guiding principles behind the Art Deco movement was that the practical use of the piece should not replace its elegance and beauty. This was one of the reasons why expensive and precious materials such as gold, ivory and crystal were so widely used.
ART DECO OBJECTS
The Art Deco movement was as prevalent in functional household objects as in the era’s furniture. For example, Bakelite became the first synthetic plastic and gained popularity during the 1920s and 30s as the primary material in the production of Bakelite radios. The use of mass-produced synthetic plastics did not suddenly mean compromising style. Bakelite radios remain highly collectable for people desiring a genuine piece of Gatsby-era Americana, with the snakeskin patterns, geometric patterns, lines and symmetry all providing the basis of design for the radios.
As with the furniture, although the use of Bakelite meant that it was highly durable, heat resistant and not prone to scratching, the elegance and beauty of the pieces continued to exceed the functionality. The same can be said of timepieces of the Art Deco era, where clock faces are enclosed within stunning, luxurious pieces that catch the eye far more than the need to tell the time might require. Other objects, such as vases, mirrors, lamps and book ends, and non-functional, such as figurines and sculptures, continue to hark back to the bygone era of Art Deco wealth, luxury and indulgence.

Las Vegas - The New and the Retro
Las Vegas began as a railroad link town in the early 1900's. In the early 1930's, the tiny settlement exploded with the construction of the nearby Hoover Dam, which created a huge demand for booze, gambling and women for the largely male workforce. Many of the early casinos were built by the mafia, and the city has gone through a number of phases since - from the post-WWII boom years, to the Howard Hughes years, to the modern "megaresort" era.
You can break Vegas down into two broad choices for exploring on foot: The "New" Strip (just called "The Strip") and The Old Strip (called the "Fremont Street Experience"). While both offer endless entertainment options, they are very different experiences. If you want to make your pedometer happy - and register a 15-20 mile weekend - it's possible to cover both sections in a couple days!
Fremont Street Experience is defined by its five-block pedestrian walkway that connects all the big hotels, and is covered by massive video screen canopy. According to Wikipedia, it is the largest video screen in the world. While looking up to view it, you'll occasionally notice people sailing through the sky, Superman-like. This is the SlotZillah zipline, and ticket info is here.
The walkway is lined with outdoor bars, various street shows, and three stages which feature mainly cover bands at night. Most of the hotels date from the early 1900's (Golden Gate, 1906) to the 1960's (Four Queens, 1966). Most have been renovated multiple times, have all the modern slots, and also have much lower table limits than the mega-hotels on the Strip. All have many places to eat, and if in a pinch, there is always the White Castle on the walkway (can't miss the prominent sign). Indeed, a buddy of mine's favorite experience is to grab a six pack of those square burgers and head inside D's across the street to play the last remaining Sigma Derby (built in 1985) horse racing machine.
I like all the various relics from yesteryear - like the vintage slots at the Golden Gate, the supposedly haunted Apache Hotel that sits inside Binion's, and all the retro signs like Vegas Vic. Nearby is a spectacular museum on the history of the Mafia, simply called The Mob Museum.
A couple things to know: the walkway can get hot in summer, and there are some sketchy characters about - keen an eye on purse and wallet.
The Strip is bounded by the famous Vegas sign (and Pinball Hall of Fame across the street) and the upscale Wynn Hotel three miles north on Las Vegas Boulevard. The Mirage is largely credited with jumpstarting the "megaresort" phase of The Strip in the late 1980's, with its massive size, tropical rainforest and Siegfried and Roy shows.
Most of hotels on the Strip have high-end clubs, huge gambling floors and sports books - not to mention shopping malls. Some of the resorts take up an entire block. Many of hotels connect together through tunnels and walkways (Mandalay Bay, The Excalibur and The Luxor all connect, for example).
Personal favorites: Caesars Palace, which has the best sports book and game viewing, hourly animatronic shows (called The "Fall of Atlantis") and a simulated sky. The Aria has a relaxing "open air" vibe with its high ceilings and sleek design, not to mention a Javier's Mexican Restautant
Check out Fremont Street to:
See the true "old soul" and nostalgia of Vegas
Party it up with friends and live music
Save some dollars on table limits and room rates
Don't mind a sensory overload of blaring loud music, techno visuals and large crowds (especially at night)
Check out The Strip to:
Have a more high-end experience
Go clubbing and see shows
Check out expensive shops
Spend some serious dough

YESTERDAYS FEW KNOW
YESTERDAYS FEW KNOW - https://keywestlou.com/yesterdays-few-know-3/Originally posted June 2017   I have gotten old. Eighty two in less than a week. Some recent experiences brought the fact clearly to mind. I stopped into Verizon to learn how to wi-fi through my cell phone. The young lady working was also babysitting her two children. Six and eight. Summertime.  The Verizon store their day camp that day. The kids were playing with their cell phones. I mentioned how smart kids are today. Laptops, cell phones, etc. Mom agreed. She said she remembered when all she had was a flip phone. I would say she was in her late 20’s. I immediately thought…..If she only knew! I was born in 1935. In the late 1930’s into the first part of the 1940’s, our phone was the corner grocer. No one had telephones, except business people. the grocer took calls for the block. If a call came for my father, the grocer (his name was Frank) would go out on the street and yell…..Tell John he has a call! Someone would transfer the message to my Dad or to another neighbor to relate. Then we got a telephone. A four party line. Meant four homes had the same line. If you picked up and heard talking, you hung up till the line was free. We graduated to a two party line. Then the time came when the only line was ours. We had a private line. A big deal! Cell phones did not make an appearance till my mid law practice years. Big and bulky. The phones got smaller. I recall the flip top. I am absolutely amazed that my cell phone today is in effect a computer. I can do everything with it. Only took eighty two years! When I am gone, will anyone remember? I was surprised to read recently that typewriters are making a come back. People join together with their vintage machines and have Type-Ins. I took a typewriting course in high school. My parents bought me a new portable for college. A Smith-Corona. Part of the Super 5 Series. Portable. Used it all the time in college. Term papers! Ribbons to change. Always ended up with dirty fingers. Carbon paper for copies. Dirty fingers again. A mistake had to be corrected. A bit of erasing and whiting over. Now, vintage typing parties! Even writing came into play this week. Cursive writing. Handwriting. I write. I can write my name and everything else. No big deal for me. I learned in the first grade. It was called Palmer Method. I mentioned earlier this week that at Dueling Bartenders monday night two young ladies sat next to me. At best in their late 20s. They saw me making notes about our conversation. They said/asked…..You can cursive write? They could not. They could not even write their names. Both had college degrees. Into well paying jobs. However, Bush 2’s no child left behind made them computer genius. But, not hand writers. They were impressed I could write! I have a lot more for today. However, I shall save it for another time. Enjoy your day!

How to Create a Conscious Wardrobe Style?
More and more environmentally concerned shoppers are thinking about sustainability. It's more vital than ever to make thoughtful judgments, especially when it comes to our clothing.
Making ethical clothing decisions benefits the environment, people, and animals while also allowing us to save money and improve our fashion style. Professional sewers working on industrial sewing machines work day and night to create magic for their clients.
The fast-fashion sector has grown significantly in response to consumer demand for attractive and affordable clothing during the last 20 years. Every week, thousands of fresh, inexpensive, and popular fashions are pushed into high-street stores.
It is critical to make more ecologically conscious decisions to protect the environment. It all boils down to reducing textile waste, contamination of the water, air, and land, toxic chemicals, and carbon emissions.
We can reform the existing wasteful fashion system by changing our shopping patterns, boycotting unethical fashion brands, and switching to sustainably created apparel.
Top tips to create a conscious wardrobe
Vintage choice
The clothing styles of the past are strikingly similar to those of today. And some of the most fashionable people have been wearing vintage clothing for years.  Clothing that has been previously worn can be anything you wish it to be. Just keep an eye out for eighty-year-old silk pieces; they might not make it through the night.
Better quality
If you're used to buying trend-driven fast fashion at a low price, it's easier said than done. This, I'll concede, necessitates a mental shift. It's important to remember that higher quality doesn't always imply a higher price. Before you buy a garment, inspect the seams and fabric.
Ethical brands
Most of us would rather buy from companies that design thoughtfully and pay a decent wage to the workers who create the textiles and clothing. It also helps professional sewers and garment houses to explore and purchase good quality industrial sewing machines to deliver the best.
The difficulty in locating these brands, as well as the expense, are two major barriers to our participation. Begin following ethical fashion blogs and websites to learn about the amazing brands that are making a difference. Sign up for email newsletters from any ethical brands you come across; they frequently offer deals at the end of the season, making them more affordable.
Take your time
Don't be tricked into thinking you're dressed to the nines. Take the time to experiment with your clothes and create fresh outfits from your existing wardrobe. It may sound simple, but I've lost track of how many times I've come up with fresh outfit combinations with items I already had.
