#Visual Perception
Are you making a video or gif with “subliminal” messages?
Hi. I’d like you to learn about visual acuity, saccadic movement, and how humans actually read, because if you put your pretty words outside of a certain area around where your imagined subject is going to be staring at the spiral then they’ll have to willfully break their focus and let their eyes read.
Which, well, ruins the whole vibe.
And it makes me sad.

Science Saturday
Bust out the 3D-glasses for this week’s Science Saturday, Foundations of Cyclopean Perception by Hungarian-born neuroscientist, psychologist, and pioneering computer artist Bela Julesz. Published in 1971 by The University of Chicago Press, the futurist think tank The Millennium Project listed Julesz’ book as among the 20th century’s top 100 most influential works on cognitive science. It is considered a classic in visual science; despite that, it has been out of print for decades with the exception of an MIT Press facsimile edition in 2006.
The book transformed the way scientists conceptualized binocular vision, primarily through its use of stereograms: pairs of static images that, when viewed through a stereoscope, are combined by the brain to create a perception of three dimensionality. While Julesz did not invent the stereogram, he is credited with the creation of the random dot stereogram as a means of testing and studying depth perception to support his work at Bell Laboratories. Julesz’ random dot stereograms would later give rise to autostereograms, invented by a student of Julesz and perhaps more familiar to readers as Magic Eye posters.
When the stereograms are printed in two chromatically contrasting colors and superimposed upon one another, a 3D anaglyph is created. All of the sterograms from Foundations of Cyclopean Perception are preproduced as anaglyphs in an appendix. The book comes with an anaglyphoscope (commonly known as 3D glasses) tucked into a pocket in the back cover for viewing the red-green anaglyphs at the back of the book. If you happen to have one of those cheap pairs of cardboard 3D glasses laying around, see what hidden figures lurk in the last three images above!
Find more Science Saturday posts here.

Gumoko is feeling sad. She comes over to Spidey’s apartment, knowing that he’s hiding from the outside hustling holiday cheers…which was also filled with the scent of mint. His Spider DNA makes him allergic to mint, but now he also caught a head cold and is shivering under his blanket fort.
He sneezes a soft “Ah-Choo!” as Gumoko pokes her head through the fort’s opening. She sees him looking miserable; a snot drop forming outside of his mask.
Gumoko enters his fort and wraps a blanket around the both of them. Spidey cuddles up to Gumoko with a happy expression in his masked eyes; a heart shape forming to the side of his head.

WRITE 28 DAYS: DREAM POEMS - Day 16
Part of my Feb 2024 Dream Poems project. Quick Reflection on Images An unexpected thing has been happening this month as I focus on dreams and writing poems, and that’s that I am even more drawn than usual to images. Actual images, like photographs and paintings, not descriptive writing that evokes an image, though that too. I’ve been dreaming — day-dreaming, that is — about making collages of…

Until #TheDress went viral, no one, not even vision scientists, had any idea that these specific discrepancies in colour appearance existed. This is all the more remarkable considering how easy it is to establish this difference. In the case of #TheDress, it’s as easy as asking ‘What colours do you see?’ If we could be oblivious to such an easy-to-measure difference in subjective experience, how many other such differences might there be that can be discovered if only we know where to look and which questions to ask?

The Garden of Weirdness from ThePareidolics# series
In a journey from primal pareidolic stimuli to the final creative output, here's an inquiry on how human mind can navigate through the chaos finding meaning....
Have your seen faces or shapes of animals at random? In the clouds, texture of the wall, and almost anywhere! Ever wondered why? Well, it seems that we all have this natural superpower of ‘seeing’ faces or familiar patterns at random places. The reason is a phenomenon called Pareidolia. Pareidolia, (Ancient Greek παρα (para, “alongside, concurrent”) // εἴδωλον (eídōlon, “image”) is a…

Challenging Perspectives: Exploring the Possibility of a Flat Earth
Introduction:In recent years, the age-old belief that the Earth is a sphere has been questioned by a growing number of individuals who advocate for the theory that the Earth is, in fact, flat. While this may seem contrary to centuries of scientific evidence and widespread consensus, it is important to approach this topic with an open mind and explore the arguments put forth by flat Earth…
