MUMBAI: Mumbai University has come to the rescue of people facing mental health issues during the ongoing nationwide lockdown. The Department of Psychology and Counselling Centre of the university will be offering online mental health support to deal with the psychological impact of Covid-19 outbreak. It will be offered in a web-based counselling format.
Coronavirus lockdown: Latest updates Associate professor Vivek Belhekar has conceptualised the facility and will also be co-ordinating. All the faculty members will be part of the programme. The department has developed a Covid-19 counselling protocol using WHO, American Psychological Association and other professional guidelines. An intensive and exhaustive online training of all the faculty members has been conducted to deal with specific issues associated with the outbreak. Many are finding it difficult to deal with anxiety, uncertainty and feel depressed and vulnerable at this time. Wilbur Gonsalves and Umesh Bharate from the department have contributed significantly to develop the web-based counseling protocol.
Belhekar said that the counseling process will happen in three simple steps. It involved online registration of the counseling request, online psychometrics assessment of counselee, followed by the online counseling. The link for registration: https://forms.gle/Uhb5f2SPfEC8YL39A. Once registered, they will receive a link for psychometrics assessment and counseling. Counseling will be available in Marathi, Hindi and English.

The facility has developed information handouts that refers to various mental health issues and easy to implement solutions for large number of psychological problems. They include emotional issues, work from home and productivity related issues, children and senior citizens related issues, and many more. Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor of the university said that ‘the counseling facility is the much needed initiative’.
