#Vivi’s so goddamn adorable

Nobody asked but over the last couple of days I decided to listen through every mainline Skinny Puppy album (all formal LPs + Remission which is for some reason considered an EP, never fully understood that) from beginning to end in order of release. I've listened to all these albums 5 billion times and know them more or less by heart but it occurred to me after the last show that I don't know if I've ever done this.

After each album I wrote a little Twitter-sized review of it and highlighted a few standout songs. This is, of course, because I originally did this on Twitter. It was a really fun little post-concert activity so I figured I would share it here too.

Maybe even a good introduction if I still have any followers putting off checking them out...? 👀

Remission (1984). The one that started it all. Kind of. Simpler than the rest maybe but still so iconic. “Far Too Frail” continues to be my favorite, hearing it live for one of the encores blew my mind. “Film” as the encore opener also brought tears to my eyes.

Bites (1985). Still simpler than later outputs but also still a classic. Has a ton of really underrated instrumental-heavy/atmospheric tracks, and “The Choke” and “Last Call” are perfect songs. “Assimilate” is legendary but unfortunately gets hardcore overplayed lol.

Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (1986). The addition of DRG is palpable. SP starts coming into their own and sounding less like a Cabaret Voltaire tribute band. Lol. Moodier, more complex, and lush with dark soundscapes. “God’s Gift (Maggot)” is one of the best.

Cleanse Fold and Manipulate (1987). From the first beat of “First Aid” onwards, this is one of THEE quintessential Skinny Puppy albums. IMO the real start of their “golden era.” Contains some of my favorite songs of ALL time. “Addiction” is easily a no contest top 5 SP track.

VIVI SECT VI (1988). One of the greatest. Noxious war zones, sterile hospitals, choking, burning, cold clanging cages in animal laboratories. One of the darkest, most nightmarishly psychedelic, heaviest, absolutely masterfully crafted albums. “VX Gas Attack” remains unparalleled.

Rabies (1989). Hi Al. This album just oozes sex appeal. I never get tired of it. It has a deranged masculine militaristic machine gun energy unlike anything else. I’ll never tire of “Hexonxonx,” “Worlock,” or “Tin Omen.” And ending on the dreamy delirious “Spahn Dirge”… Goddamn.

Too Dark Park (1990). A lot of people call this one THE supreme SP album. It’s legendary. Pure unadulterated Skinny Puppy. Sounds like home. An endless barrage of chaos and stormy monstrous polluted amorphous landscapes. “Grave Wisdom” is an all time favorite ever.

Last Rights (1992). The most utterly mindblowing devastating masterpiece of an album maybe ever made. The cohesiveness of the themes, sounds, lyrics, imagery—pure art. It’s a terrifying and desolate hellscape. Flung into sonic Knowhere. “Mirror Saw” is pure perfect transcendence.

The Process (1996). I have some trouble with this album—It can just make me very sad. You can both feel and hear the devastating loss. Barren and hopeless. Still, it’s TEEMING with absolutely rocking, heavy, guttural bangers. “Cult,” “Blue Serge,” and “Curcible” stand out.

The Greater Wrong of the Right (2004). A personal fave. Forever enthralled by the dreary smoking futuristic cityscapes painted by the various textures across each track. An epic journey through destruction of civilization and the mind. “Goneja” is an easy top 5 SP song for me.

Mythmaker (2007). Used to struggle with it, was even my least favorite, but it’s grown on me and I love it. A high octane reality-bending journey through alien dimensions and human mythos. If Ogre’s alien Other belonged to an album it’d be this one. I adore “Dal” and “Pedafly.”

HanDover (2011). Grossly underrated and constantly written off, I ADORE this album. It captures a sort of dreamlike melancholic sharp surrealism unmatched by anything else, like rain falling softly atop a rusting metallic dystopia. “Gambatte” is a stand-out forever favorite.

Weapon (2013). A fitting end. Nostalgic familiarity rejuvenated with sharp crispness. This one taps deep into my imagination; post-apocalyptic fantastical mechanical wastelands haunted by ghosts of the past. “Plasicage” is an all-time fave, and I love the reimagined “Solvent.”

Vivian's room was quickly becoming a familiar sight to Eichi with how often she invited him over, be it for simple visits to watch something with her, play games or to spend the night. Every moment with her was greatly cherished by him, always filled with laughter and pranks and just pure excitement that managed to make him feel like a child again.

Although, he couldn't help but pick on and antagonize her as well - the way her face scrunched up in a mix between amusement and frustration, or how quickly she threw playful insults at him never failed to amuse him. This was one such time, but Eichi couldn't help but notice the way his heart started to race. He was trapped against the wall, her arms blocking him in as she glared up at him.

"You're a goddamned cheater! I know you have more stupid cards hidden somewhere." As she spoke, Eichi couldn't help but compare her to a kitten with its fur puffed up, trying so hard to appear intimidating. But Vivian didn't seem to notice the position she had him in, one that amused him to no end.

"It's poor sportsmanship to blame someone else for cheating when you may just not be very good at games." Eichi hummed, eyes twinkling as he tried to get even more of a rise out of her. And it seemed to work as she narrowed her eyes, the rare expression of genuine frustration on her face something he could only revel in for a short moment before she had leaned forward to nip at his arm.

"Now that's uncivilized. Maybe you really are a feral little cat." It hardly hurt, her teeth barely pressing down before she pulled away.

"Oh, shut up!" She threw her hands up in the air, finally freeing him. "Oh, I'm Eichi and I don't deserve to be bitten at all!" A poor imitation of him, her voice pitched much too high to be anywhere near accurate. "I'm Eichi and I'm such a sweetheart, oh please be nice to me!"

He couldn't help it, laughter immediately bubbling up. Vivian's frustration seemed to disappear quickly though, as her eyes lit up before she started giggling as well.

"Was that meant to be me? I think it might need a little work." He reached out, hesitant that she might bite him again before he pat her head. "I'm sorry for teasing you. Your reactions are just too endearing."

Again, she once more resembled a huffy cat in his mind as she bat his hand away. "You're so insufferable. I should lock you in a room with Ibara and see how fast you go insane."

Despite her words towards him, Eichi felt his heart skip once more. He never had the chance to spend time like this with anyone in school, but he was glad Vivian had been the one to give him that chance now.

Moments like this with her especially were the ones he cherished, ones where he could just simply be someone on the same level as her instead of the heir to his family's name, or an emperor. Although, he knew not much of that mattered to her anyways despite her jokes about it - she treated him with friendliness that extended beyond what she gave to everyone else.

Eichi wanted to voice these thoughts, but he was unsure of how she would react. So he just simply slid his hand in hers, and she paused in the middle of yet another tirade and smiled at him. One that was so adoring it made his chest ache.

"I'll be nice to you now!" Squeezing his hand before reaching for his other one, she added, "I love you, Eichi. Sometimes you suck soooo bad, though."

He knew she was saying those words only as a friend, yet it still made his heart skip once again as he returned her smile. "I love you too, Vivi." It was always nice to trade those words with her, but he couldn't help the pang of disappointment that trickled into his heart.

Vivian was oblivious, reading his actions as only just platonic, and it only made Eichi wonder if she would still treat such words and actions from him if he kissed her on the spot. But this moment was enough for now.

  Alliance means marriage in pirate

At first Law didn’t pay it any attention. He dismissed the weird stares the Straw Hats were giving him on their way to Dressrosa, let Nami take his measurements without care, ignored their obvious planning for a huge feast. After all, what reason was there other than suspicion over his intentions with this alliance—rightfully so, Law wasn’t entirely honest with them—preparation for their disguises, and premature excitement for victory.

Oh how wrong he was.

It was the very first night he had spent on their ship that he happened to walk into the kitchen just when Nami and Straw Hat himself were deep into some kind of discussion. He didn’t pay them any mind, since it obviously didn’t matter to them whether he was there for it either, but as much as he didn’t care what they were talking about, it was still impossible not to hear their conversation.

“What do you mean you don’t want to invite him?” Nami asked, frustration obvious in her voice as she whacked her captain over the head with the pen in her hand. “He saved your life and gave you your hat!”

Straw Hat slumped over the table lifelessly. “I promised not to see him until I became a great pirate,” he mumbled after a moment; there was an adorable pout on his lips, too.

Wait, no. No, Law didn’t just think the idiot was adorable. Absolutely not. Law shook his head, quickly turning away from the scene to head for the kitchen counter. He simply needed to get his coffee and get the hell out before his stressed out brain came up with any more ridiculous thoughts.

Nami sighed behind him. “Men,” she huffed, and he could hear her furiously scratching something out on the paper in front of her. “Fine, who do you want to invite?”

“Vivi.” The answer was immediate. Law wondered who this Vivi was. Maybe a girlfriend? Yeah, right. Why did the idea bother him so much?

“Obviously.” Law could just hear Nami’s eyes rolling back even without looking. “Who else? Your grandpa and dad?”

Straw Hat groaned at that. “I’ve never even met my dad. Grandpa is definitely going to make a scene but yeah, I guess. Also Jinbei and Rayleigh.”

Law wasn’t sure he even wanted to know what this was about. With that line up of people, he felt like he would be dead if he only looked at Straw Hat wrong; whatever the hell this was about, he was definitely going to pass if they decided to ask him to come. And if he knew Straw Hat at all, he was absolutely going to ask him.

“Torao, who do you want to invite beside your crew?” And there it was.

Law sighed, ignoring Straw Hat’s question for a moment in favour of finally pouring himself his goddamn coffee before he slowly turning around to look at the other captain. “Invite to what?”

“The wedding!” Straw Hat said, beaming at Law with eyes full of excitement.

Lionheart by cyan96 - ~28000 words, Unfinished - tbh I nearly didn’t put this one on the list because I feel like most people who follow me have probably already read it, since I read my tags and I know how many of you love Law and Cora, but, on the off chance you haven’t, go read it rn. Sea of Monsters by WhirlyBird70 - ~32000 words, Unfinished but it’s more like a bunch of short stories anyways - Bunch of fucked up stuff in this one so mind the tags but like, it’s a The East Blue is Full of Demons AU and it’s good weird shit so if you’re into that go read it. 

Small Changes by sweetscentences - ~37000 words, Finished - More Law and Cora. Honestly this one is just… so happy and domestic and good?? Also it’s got baby Heart Pirates, and they’re fucking adorable. (Also the author says they’re working on a sequel, so go support that!)

our shores of starlight (come sailing in) by kurgaya - ~46000 words, Finished - First thing on this list to not actually be gen- it’s Zolu, kinda, but not really focused on that? Mostly it’s just about Zoro. He’s a ghost in a sword, which is absolutely not gonna stop Luffy from recruiting him. I already talked about how great kurgaya’s prose is somewhere above this and that applies here too, it’s just gorgeously written. 

Scylla by missmungoe - ~50000 words, Finished - Technically this one’s not gen either, it’s Makino/Shanks. Makino marries a pirate, becomes a pirate, gets a sword, nearly gives Garp an aneurysm. Please read it. 

Overcoming an Era by Beyond_Kailani - ~60000 words, Unfinished - Ace bumps into a very familiar blonde in a top hat while searching for Blackbeard and ends up dragging him along. Maybe my favorite ongoing fic? I’m a huge sucker for canon divergence with regards to the ASL brothers and this is just, that, and it’s wonderful. 

Within Risk of Reason by Depths - ~60000 words, Unfinished - Another Sabo-centric ASL fix it, I’m a simple woman with simple tastes- but really. It’s got time travel, and crimes, and vaguely dubious adoption. What more do you need? It’s so so good.

Continuing on from the last play session, this one covers Disney Castle/Timeless River, Port Royal, Agrabah, and Sora’s second return to Twilight Town.

*I’m fairly indifferent with Demyx, but I get why he was a fan favorite back in the days. He’s got personality: cowardly, lazy, and apathetic, Demyx probably mooches off the rest of the Organization XIII’s sweet pad, playing his sitar and doing weed, and never paying rent.

*Mickey Mouse Club was a horrifying choice to use as Disney Castle’s primary background music, it’s almost insidiously catchy.

*I love how little you actually need to fight within Disney Castle because Minnie’s holy powers mean she can fuck up a Heartless’ day anytime.

*Yeesh, I don’t miss Daisy’s portrayal as a Nagging Girlfriend at all, it's such a garbage characteristic. She’s so unreasonable here that it borders on parody.

*I feel like the writers had to squeeze in a small “We can’t mess with the timeflow here” in order to leave Timeless River as is. Er, was? Which, fine, time travel is a finicky thing, but it's especially a safety net because it prevents Sora and friends from trying to redeem Pete.

Like I think this is the only section in the game where we get any kind of sympathy for Pete, being so miserable working for Maleficent and longing for days gone by as a former sea captain. Sora and pals had no issue working with Past Pete to stop Current Pete, so one would think in another situation, they'd convince his retro self to stick with boats instead of any grand ambition of evil. It wouldn't be the first time Sora gave a shit about rules if it meant helping the greater good, but I guess he made an exception here or something.

*I'm also amused by Timeless River because the time traveling here is so innocuous and confined to this particular Disney World. I've heard the main plot in later games goes balls-off-the-walls apeshit with the time traveling in comparison and oh boy, I can’t wait till I get to those!

*I could see Disney telling Square Enix why Pirates of the Caribbean had to follow the movie’s plot beat-for-beat during game development, what with being the hottest shit at the time of the game’s release, but it means a hell of a lot more cutscenes than any of the previous Disney Worlds I’ve been in and the experience is poorer for it.

The Disney Worlds work best when they aren’t adapting its respective movie almost scene-by-scene, but utilizing their chief characters and setting that integrate with the bigger narrative while being self-contained (dear god, Kingdom Hearts is basically Disney Extended Universe.)

It’s stifling even for a game studio like Square-Enix and their notorious love affair with cinematic cutscenes, and an example of what happens when the game is restricted to playing an abridged version of its respective film.

*I will never understand why they censored the guns the pirates were holding. I get the characters are realistically designed and thus, might evoke a more visceral image of Characters Shooting Pistols In A Fictional Game For An All-Age Audience, but like Clayton from the first KH had a gun. Were they really concerned that Sora would get hurt from a bullet wound when they had no problem with Clayton shooting him in the face just because he looked more like a cartoon?

This problem also plagues Xigbar even though his guns are much more fanciful in design.

*My god, the models for the PoTC cast is still strikingly good even now. Square Enix had made a reputation as a studio that blew you away with incredible graphics that no one else was able to capture at the time. A lot of game companies has since caught up, but back then, they were on another level.

*Speaking of horrendous Disney executive meddling, this game also has the Chicken Little summon, a character who otherwise likely would never have appeared in the games because nobody goddamn loved that movie. Presumably, the little bastard got in because that was the latest Disney Animated Canon that was to arrive by the time KHII came out.

And man, Chicken Little is a wretched, wretched film.

*Bless James Arnold Taylor, he is a fine voice actor and he really tries, but he can’t capture Jack Sparrow.

*I was shocked the first time when they decided to adapt Return of Jafar. I assumed Disney sequels didn’t “count”, but lo and behold, there’s the Iago redemption arc.

*Kairi is only marginally better here than in KH1 by a significantly low bar. About roughly the halfway point of the game, she gets sick of waiting and when the first opportunity strikes, she decides fuck it, she’s gonna find Sora and Riku by herself. ...Then she promptly gets kidnapped by Axel minutes later. I mean, she tried.

*Pluto’s ability to just end up any goddamn place he wants with no rhyme or reason is the funniest reoccurring thing in the series. I love how he’s the first character to end up in the World That Never Was even though he’s just a dang dog.

*Kingdom Hearts is a game that you have to take at face value, otherwise questions start rising about the nature of an anime boy traveling with a sentient dog man and a disgruntled duck with no one in any world finding this strange.

Twilight Town is such a sleepy, ordinary town with local urban myths the closest to anything weird happening that in any other situation, would probably wonder just what is up with that kid, Sora, and his doofy traveling companions.

“hey guys are you also seeing a dark, magical floating portal with an axe symbol or is it just me?”

*The way Seifer just shoved the Struggle trophy into Sora’s (well, Goofy’s when Sora refused it) hands after the trio saved him and his friends from the Nobodies feels like a comical tsundere gesture (”J-Just take the trophy, baka!”)

*Sora being adorable again because he just missed Kairi in Twilight Town and he cannot stop thinking about her is wholesome as all get out.

*Twilight Town is established as A Normal Town that just happens to be a hot spot for weird multidimensional hoppers. So...what the fuck is Vivi?

In FF9, he's literally a sentient creature that was created (Black Mages being separate species in Gaia than just a class), but it's clear the FF characters in the KHverse are alternate universe takes on their prime counterparts. The implication is that Vivi is and has always been a resident of Twilight Town. But is he still a Black Mage? Or is he human, but his brimmed hat is so big it covers his entire face so it only gives the illusion that his face is shadowy?

(I know, I know, this definitely falls into overthinking territory.)

Unpopular opinion: This one im not entirely sure is unpopular fandom wide, or just with people I talk to. I really like Artsys idea that Arthurs parents are divorced. Maybe its a little biased because I can just continue to project harder onto him :Vbut hell as far as under represented groups go. I think people with divorced parents is there. the only time thats used is in like...cheesy ‘message’ movies and half the time parents end up back together. and the few that dont, had other weird issues (ms doubtfire is yikes when you look past nostalgia).I think Arthurs personality, or at least his issues, seem to fit a kid that had to deal with his parents messy divorce.
