Head Mechanic, after the general good morning small talk: So, guess we’re actually going to hire that Squints guy. He just needs to sign and return his offer letter.

Me: …That younger dude who was here for an interview last week? His name can’t actually be Squints.

Head Mechanic: No, he’s got a completely normal Hispanic name. But he worked at the same dealership with Work Child 1 and 2 before they came here, and since Work Child 5 was in the same social circle and is starting to settle in, and they all worked together…he followed up because he wants a better work environment. Apparently the shop foreman at that dealership is an absolute jackass.

Me: Yeah, sounds like it. Are you sure he’s ok with being called Squints, though? That sounds like a mean nickname that someone made up for him that he’s just never bothered to make a big deal about.

Head Mechanic:…this is why we need you. You think of shit that would never actually occur to me.

20 minutes later…

Work Child 5: Hey, Head Mechanic is out in the shop freaking out about all of our nicknames because you don’t want us being mean to Squints when he starts. What is happening.

Me: Honey, head mechanic freaks out over being given another spread sheet to maintain, this is a drop in the ocean. It does sound like a kinda mean thing to call someone, but if he likes it, then who cares? As long as that’s what he’s comfortable with. Which should be the rule with all of your nicknames.

WC5: Oh! I see what you’re saying. Yeah, he does actually go by Squints because it’s a nickname his grandma gave him, but I can see why you’re worried. And we’re all…well, indifferent at worst about our nicknames.

Me:…indifferent how.

Usually Matt is one of those 2-dimensional characters whose character falls a bit flat, but this author has really gone above and beyond canon to give him a voice, and what a brilliant narrative voice that is. Me: Right, so. You know how the Irish really hate the English? And the the Irish word pound is punt? *dramatic pause as i wait for a mechanic to come to the worst possible correct conclusion*

WC5: Cunt on a punt. Oh MY god. You’re the worst. Why is that’s funny? Shut up, go away.

Squints, after WC5 has stormed away in angry pun delight: I don’t get it, can you explain it to me?

Me: Yeah, of course. Where did you get lost?

Squints: The part where you got Asia and Africa mixed up.

Me:…let’s go look at a map, sweetie.

Squints: What, no, I just want you to explain it to me! I’m on my lunch break!

Me: No, we’re both about to learn something, bring your food, let’s go. Map time.

Long story short Squints had Eurasia and Asia confused (he knew roughly where England was but assumed it was physically connected somehow?) He pretty much assumes that the world as it exists around him is the only real world. I think. He’s a good kid, he just…has certain hills and valleys that need to be navigated.
