this is an incredibly subjective list and i by no means think these fics are better than others. these are just fics that i continue to think about, that i have reread in chase of the feelings i felt when i first read them, or that impacted me in a way that i can’t explain. there are no real set criteria. there’s no real rhyme or reason. these are just my 23 favorite fics i read in 2023*.

that's it! honestly, i'm a little sad i didn't read much omgcp fic this year, but as it goes, when a newer hyperfixation makes it way into my head, it overtakes whatever was there before it. (also when i went through my haikyuu phase, i was severely depressed...it just consumed me while i was at my most vulnerable.)

To answer the second part of your ask, with great difficulty and quite good acting skills. Yuu has several fully stocked first aid kits in their apartment at all times. Most of the supervillains and minions assume that these items are for them and their rivals in villainy, given how kind the reporter is and how often they themselves have had an after-foiling patch up at Yuu’s hands whenever the superheroes have gotten too rough and it’s too far to get back to their lairs. And technically, they aren’t wrong.

It’s just that Yuu has gone through the supplies in them themself far more quickly than any late night visitors they’ve ever had will. They’ve learned how to stifle their groans and whimpers of pain whenever they need to pull debris out of their wounds or stitch themselves up. Vil would be green with envy if he ever figured out how well they can blend water and smudgeproof concealer over bruises so their presence is invisible, and layering clothes so gauze and bandages are indistinguishable under them. They have whole routines now for when they’re suffering from blood loss or concussions, that aren’t too dissimilar from a spa or TLC night for some other people.

On a few occasions, they’ve even done a very quick, quiet and dirty patch up job on themselves before bringing the first aid kit out to help the supervillain who just got done beating the Prefect bloody and then left Yuu’s place none-the-wiser.

The hardest thing for them is actually the recuperation period over the next few days, because of course, Yuu the Reporter can’t exactly ask anyone to take it easier on them, unless they want to arouse suspicion. So they do their best to hide any winces or flinches when their wounds are jostled.

As for the first part…look inside ur heart…see who resides there…and know it is them who is the answer to ur question…

Can you tell us about that gender bent midsummer night's dream production you did lights for?

Oh boy oh baby oh boy ive been waiting for this one

So in 2019, I ran lights for a Free Shakespeare in the Park production of Midsummer that took the characters of Lysander and Helena and genderswapped them. Lysander became Lysandra, and Helena became Helenus. And dude???????? It changed...SO MUCH??? It literally lives in my head rent free, i still think about this production every goddamn day. More under the cut.

When Hermia’s father insists that she marry Demitrius or face death, it becomes much less a matter of a man exerting control over his daughter as if he owns her, although it still definitely is that, but now takes on a new dimension. Egeus has delivered an ultimatum: be straight or be killed. Absolutely fucking terrifying, and for modern audiences especially, the stakes suddenly become much more personal and much more real. (We also kept a running tally of every family who left in the middle of the show when they realized it was gay LMFAO our highest record number was 18 families in one night. Gotta love PA!) So in the scene immediately following that, you get this really gorgeous tenderness in the “how now my love, why is your cheek so pale” scene, you know the one. The agreement to elope, the overwhelming joy that comes from the notion of leaving your homophobic father and going to live with your girlfriend’s accepting aunt...it’s good, it gave me the warm and fuzzies.

The Helenus comes on, and oh boy oh boy oh fucking boy. Because in the first scene, you have this line from Lysandra about Demitrius promising himself to Helenus, and Egeus looking absolutely horrified at it, and Demitrius denying it fervently. And Helenus is lost, confused, and desperate, and he’s seeking comfort in two other openly gay people, his childhood best friend and her girlfriend—and the’re both leaving athens. Together. When he gives that fucking goddamn how happy some o’er other some can be speech (which ive had memorized since i was eight because its so unbelievably fuckign good) it’s absolutely HEARTRENDING. Demitrius was his, and they were in love, and then demitrius got cold feet and backed out, and now hermia and lysandra are leaving too, and helenus is going to be alone in athens.

Then you get helenus and demitrius’s first scene together, the “you draw me you hardhearted adamant” scene, the “spurn me like a dog” scene. And this scene was hard for me to watch every single night. Because, now forgive me for getting a little personal, I struggled with a lot of internalized homophobia for a pretty significant portion of my life. And there was this awful heartwrenching moment the actors did where demitrius grabbed helenus by his shirt and their mouths were inches apart and demetrius like tore himself away and stumbled away shouting and it just...i’ll say, okay, i named my sword demitrius(That’s not a euphamism, I have a sword hanging on the wall of my apartment named demitrius, I intend to name all my swords after shakespeare cahracters)because of this character. I don’t like demitrius within the text, i think he’s an asshole LMAO. But this version of demitrius really just grabbed my heart ripped it out of my chest and stomped on it, because he wasn’t a misogynist freak, he was a real dude struggling with some serious significant internalized homophobia. It gave him a reason to reject helenus, it gave him a reason to pursue hermia, and it gave him an actual in-depth character reason to be a dick other than just...hey, this is demitrius, he’s a dick to women.

One of the worst and best scenes every night was the fight scene. Now the fight scene fucking gets me, no matter what, but with the sexuality dynamics, god, it’s just so fucked up. Because when demitrius first starts acting all lovely-dovey towards helenus, there’s this awful heartbreaking look of longing on helenus’s face, and then when “oh, spite, oh, hell” comes bursting out, ur heart breaks ight the fuck along with him. Not to mention now here’s hermia, who ran away from her father to be with her girlfriend, to escape the confines of heterosexuality, so they could be together, and now lysandra is turning away from her and trying to get all cozy with helenus. Helenus’s heart is breaking because he thinks that he’s being betrayed by his own community, being mocked for something that they above all else should support him for. Hermia’s heart is breaking because she’s losing the one person she sacrificed everything to be with. Lysandra and demitrius are fine lmao they’re asleep, they don’t know whats going on.

But like okay. Okay. god. Okay. listen to me. When theyre all running exhaustedly through the woods and they eventually collapse on the ground, sound asleep, and puck comes out with the cure for the spell...he cures them both. HE CURES BOTH LYSANDRA AND DEMITRIUS. Because unlike in the original text, demitrius doesn’t need to be under a spell to love helenus. He loved him all along, he never stopped loving him, he just...wouldn’t let himself. So wheras in the heterosexual midsummer, puck usually cures lysander but not demetrius, in this version, you have them both being cured, both being brought back to themselves. 

And when they wake up, and the lights went all purple and blue and soft and the music started playing (it was fucking moon river. The music was fucking moon river please im going to cry) and they’re all just standing there, holding the person they love, swaying softly, whispering in amazement at their fantastic dream…”are you sure that we are awake?” oh my fucking god. Oh my fucking god. Oh my god.

Then everybody comes storming on, theseus and hippolyta and egeus and such, and demitrius has that line...that fucking line… “The object and the pleasure of mine eye Is only Helenus. To him, my lord, Was I betrothed ere I saw Hermia. But like in sickness did I loathe this food, But as in health come to my natural taste, Now I do wish it, love it, long for it, And will for evermore be true to it.” DUDE ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME THAT’S SO GOOD. Because unlike with the magic flower route, he actually is returning to his natural tastes. This is the story, this is his story, this is him giving up on his attempts to hide that part of himself. This is him accepting who he is and wishing for Helenus, loving him, longing for him, will forevermore be true to him….god. It got me every single fucking night. Every goddamn single night that line made me tear up.

And then they all got married and it was lovely and beautiful blah blah its a comedy everybody gets married you know the drill <3 but yeah, i still think about that production every single fucking day of my life. I dont think ill ever stop thinking about it.

My ideas if Wales gets referenced in this new britain region which is probably unlikely but we can hope:

* Another sheep pokemon/a mareep regional variant/just mareep being common over here

* llamhigyn y dwr regional variant of gligar! As a kid i always thought gligar was meant to be one of those! Its a mytholigical flying frog with a scorpion tail, and really the only reason i dont think gligar is based on it is because its ground instead of water type. Like its really specifically similar right down to the wings being webs under the arms!

* Welsh Lady pokemon! (The traditional costume kids wear at eisteddfods)

* Maybe instead some sort of legendary based on eisteddfods in general? Theyre a poetry/art festival where the winner gets "the chairing of the bard" aka just imagine ur average school contest except if ur in wales u literally get knighted with a fake sword, crown and The School's Personal Throne. Its very weird in retrospect but it just seemed normal when i was a kid. I won it once and i was so anxious having to go thru the big celebration thing!! Like aaa just let me take my certificate and run! XD So yeah maybe a legendary based on the eisteddfod throne itself? Its called a throne but its more of a fancy wooden chair with patterns carved into it. So some sort of wooden dragon! And the legend would be that only the most talented bards can ride it and it bucks off anyone it thinks isnt purehearted enough. And maybe it could have a lovespoon for a tail cos thats also another wooden welsh thing. (Fancy carved spoons for good luck and/or romantic gifts)

* welsh cake pokemon!! Theyre just a sweetened scone with raisins in it, but i think it could be really cute as a design. Im thinking a rock type that just coincidentally looks like a cake with raisins, and it rolls around sideways like a big goofy crab~

* or if you wanna go for other local foods maybe mix the kelpie with bara bryth? (Seaweed bread paste stuff) So its just a loaf of bread that evolves into a badass horse and it would make no sense to anyone except brits, lol.

* perhaps a legandary based on the bard taliesin? It could be similar to nebby in starting off with a weak baby form but then becoming a badass! Cos his origin story was that he wasnt naturally all super cool so talented at singing that he could make literal magic happen just by sheer creativity. Instead he accidentally drank a magic potion of creativity that a witch made, and his abilities came at the cos of Pissing Her Off Forevermore. So maybe the baby form cpuld be a witch's cauldron? And have a tail made of chains to symbolize how he was enslaved as that witch's assistant and managed to escape with her most valuable prize. And then his ethereal fancy humanoid form could maybe be similar to meloetta's living music thing but more with calligraphy instead? But perhaps still have a similar chain tail to show his origins, except now the links in the chain are all fancy calligraphy Os, lol

* accompanying legendary possibilities: ceridwen (the evil witch from that story) or morfran (her innocent son) Morfran did nothing wrong but is often painted as more of the villain of the story than she is, simply because he was black. Yeah there's racism even back in our mythology, ugh...! I always felt so depressed for morfran cos the story is that ceridwen only made this super magical potion of being the best bard ever cos everyone said her son was the ugliest man on earth and EVEN SHE AGREED so she thought she had to give him some magic powers to stop people from hating him. And instead taliesin steals it and goes off to be the most powerful and respected and also handsome man ever, the end. And seriously the ONLY THING they mention about why this child is ugly is that he was "black like a crow" and also his name means evil crow. And thats just the end of his story forever, being some other dude's origin story and then forgotten into the void :( So like hey a pokemon criticizing that part of the myth wouls be great too! Like maybe have morfran be a counterpart legendary like latias to latios and he just looks equally beautiful with a reversed colourscheme of dark skin and white calligraphy patterns. * Another myth with unintended bad messages is the one of Blodeuwedd or Dwedd (friends may recognize that i named my Gourgeist after her!) Writing, again

I’ve always found joy in writing. Somehow, as the years flow by, writing has become something I have unknowingly put aside. My prayers are typed in my phone, I have a dozen of pretty notebooks given by friends left empty except during rare days I have a lot of time in my hands. Don't you find that life is kind of like constantly running on a “treadmill” with no pause or stop button, we are always running, running, and running - like how Francis Chan puts it in his video on Being Still (https://youtu.be/a3T1srvSgKw). In fact, I was so convicted by the message he shared that I actually typed the transcript of it, lol. In his words, 

“You have a loving father in heaven, Almighty God…the one who decides whether you keep breathing for the rest of the day. And he’s saying “I want you right now.” Its a big deal and look at him to say “No, I got something better to do. And once I fix this thing I’m going to get running again.” Don’t do it. This is His gift. Its a time for you to look back at ur life and go why am I just running aimlessly. 

God wants you to get off this machine and get deep into a relationship with him. He wants you to have so much security in Him - its not based on how much you perform, how much you make, how successful you are. It is a God who loves you unconditionally, and get so secure in Him that you no longer fear death, or anything. Because there is SO MUCH peace. 

The greatest moments of my life have been those times I have been alone with him.

...We were made to worship Him. There is so much joy, so much peace, and He leads me into this adventure. There is work to be done, but it is about us running with Him on this adventure, but it starts with you stepping away from that treadmill and having the core of ur being connect with Him right now. This circuit breaker has given me more time in my hands, more time for reflection, more time to revisit this space, long-abandoned from the busyness of life, to be still, and to realign this restless heart back to the One who has been right by my side, waiting, yearning to spend time with me. In His presence, there is such rest, peace, stillness, and assurance that quite frankly, no amount of online browsing/shopping (which I’ve been very guilty of indulging too much in lately), movies, company, achievements, or even work, can bring to this heart. “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11). Our hearts search for many things, people, places, the “next best” thing, but our hearts will never fully be at rest, until we rest in Him. 

St. Augustine of Hippo’s early life saw him being a womanizer, gambler and critic of the virtues. His desperate search for fulfilment in pleasures, false religions, philosophy, distractions wearied his soul that he cried out “How long, O Lord, how long?”. He was then led to a passage in Romans that showed him how he could be freed from sin. He was then transformed by the truth. In one of his most famous works, Confessions, the world’s first psychological “autobiography”, he muses, 

“In contrast to God, what is man? Yet there is a connection between the two. Humans, such a small part of creation and short-lived as they are, still find a need to praise God. In spite of sin, each feels the longing to reach out to his Creator. Why is this? It is the doing of God.

 “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” (Confessions, 1963) 

So this circuit breaker, I’m getting off the treadmill - I don’t mean slacking my days away and not doing anything. Work still has to be done, in fact I’ve been busier than usual, there have been more crises happening in my clients’ lives these days with the stay-home mandate, and clients still need to be attended to (with tender, loving care) despite how I feel, but I am treasuring the momentary pauses I have now, to be able to slow down and realign my restless heart back to the Lord. There, I find true rest, peace, and joy.

HAHAHA. it's funny how before we even knew how important we were going to be to each other, something in us knew and something in us will always know. i love how fiercely you defend your opinion, i love your strength, your bold independence, and your desire to live life fully. i love that we crack up at each other's jokes even when nobody else gets them- and i love those moments where we get caught up in talking about a band or a book and we get lost in the conversation like two normal girls in high school that aren't about to go do something ridiculous like go to an awards show. i will always be there for you when you need someone to vent to, when you want to talk about the overwhelming underwhelmingness of boys that break our hearts or the overwhelming overwhelmingness of when a kiss leaves your head reeling, when i back you up and you need someone to stick up for you, or when you just need someone to understand- we've done that for each other in the last 3 years and we will do that for each other forevermore. i love you so much !!!! happy 19th lern jergi!!!!! camila" - Camila on Lauren

man this really stressed me out bc like, all my music is on Spotify and I’d have to choose one playlist to shuffle and like...that’s barely representative of me. so I took the three playlists I felt were most me, shuffled them, and took three songs from each. li’l different, but probably more accurate to my music tastes? XD first three are from my Christmas playlist (aka my comfort playlist), and the other six are from my catch-all playlists for good music.
