finished trigun 1&2 and idk it probably makes more sense to pick up stampede season 2 where trimax starts but i cant stop thinking what if the events of stampede are a direct prequel to the second half of the original manga. like vash comes out of hiding because he hears whispers of knives’ return but he genuinely can’t remember meryl or ww or the specifics of anything leading up to what happened at july. when meryl finds him she says she’s just hanging around because it’s her job but really she’s been searching for him for years and vash finds her presence strangely comforting even though he thinks he doesn’t know her. wolfwood hasn’t been able to leave the eye of michael because of his brother and the kids but he’s a priest now and he’s doing what he can. vash is the one who first sees ww in the desert and there’s a strange itch in his brain when he sees the man in black carrying a cross through the sand. wolfwood is so relieved to see vash again and that’s why his reaction to ‘meeting’ vash is so exuberant and he touches the face of the so-called stranger so familiarly. he’s relieved that meryl also found vash and she and ww share a look of acknowledgement but they can’t talk can’t indicate that they know each other because it raises too many questions but they stick with vash for as long as they can because they missed him so so bad and they know he needs someone looking after him

Does any one else forget abt all the time skips in trigun's manga

#personal #besides the initial 2 year one between trigun and trimax #that then vol 7-8 i think has half a year or smth?? #then the end gives another one but i cant remember how long #i feel like its kinda a convenient thing to use. not that its horrible but it feels like an easy skip lol #trigun to trimax works but i wish maybe vol 7's was longer? #and vash was away longer? so maybe itd feel more impactful seeing him again? #then imo everything after ww's side story feels much faster #so the additional skip at the end makes it kinda quicker #*i think its just vol 8 actually. woops. 7 is just when vash is captured

But-- If you want the best context - my comic is 98% set into the Trigun Maximum verse. Aka - the manga. The first few pages are actually set into vol. 10 of the series.

I know it's a LOT to read through, but if you like those two disaster idiots, I guarantee you'll enjoy it!

(the 2% remaining is inspirations - visual mostly - from Trigun Stampede - plant cells, thomases - and WW's stubble is also more OG series vibe, but I am not giving it up. <3)

trimax vol 10 random thoughts (ch 1-4)

usually my method for writing these posts is to read the volume in full, then read it again while writing out my thoughts. sometimes i have to read a volume more than just twice. i don't want to read this one again... mom come pick me up i'm scared

also it's finally gotten to the point that i have to split this post up into multiple parts... lol

why is nightow recycling chapter titles. or is this a translation thing? we already had chapters titled 'wolfwood' (vol2ch4) and 'death omen' (vol6ch4)... heck, the first 'wolfwood'-titled chapter is DIRECTLY REFERENCED in this very volume... anyway.

chapter 1:

this chapter cover FUCKS... it's just the punishers because this is all razlo is... a weapon. to chapel, anyway.

the bullet holes in ww's back... they've healed by now i think, but still, it's so visceral...

i don't know what to say about wolfwood's faith in vash that hasn't already been said. just. fuck, man.

can chapel die please please please please please youre nothing

razlo getting in between chapel and wolfwood is... interesting. even if he just wants to prolong ww's suffering... i don't know. it's not like razlo cares about wolfwood, but, hmmm, i don't know. just something i wanted to point out i guess.

...remind me to count how many vials wolfwood drinks when i rewatch stampede.

razlo's expressions while chapel is talking about how ww needs to die NOW while shooting him and stabbing him with the gun... hmmm... he's thinking...

chapter 2:

i like seeing razlo being pensive.

the way chapel has his talons in razlo... razlo is so loyal to him because he literally shot himself to beg for razlo's life, but this line of thinking tells me there's also lowkey fear there. the level of obsessiveness for which he injured himself so badly is the same one that makes him want to hurt wolfwood so much and razlo knows it. this is how far chapel is willing to go...

razlo... :( all he ever wanted was to be needed. and chapel fully took advantage of that.

ww is trembling here. is this him trying to physically resist chapel pushing his head back or is he trembling out of fear...

chapel is the evilest motherfucker in this whole fucking manga. seriously, fuck this guy.

melanie's words to wolfwood... despite it being a scolding, they're clearly coming from a place of love, not fear or anger. i think other people have already said everything that i could say about this. so instead i'm going to talk about razlo some more, since nightow made it a point to show us that he's listening to this.

i wonder what he's thinking... this chapter opened with him thinking about what happens to those who "betray" chapel... and he's observing this interaction, of a mother, a guardian, not reacting with anger, but with love, to seeing what's become of wolfwood. such a far cry from chapel's unbridled rage. melanie took care of razlo, too, technically. so i wonder if this is another... i don't know how to put it... another way that razlo's belief in chapel is being chipped away at.

and wolfwood thinks of vash, and once again, vash appears. like he's answering his prayer again.

i said this last volume, but i love seeing vash use his feathers to protect. and use his powers willingly. of course i worry about him when he does it, but it's just such a powerful character moment every time. because it's for wolfwood.

chapter 3:

wolfwood reaffirms his feelings about vash - absolute faith, someone he believes in and considers a friend - but doesn't understand why vash would come for him. i'm feeling some type of way. it's mutual, you fucking idiot!!!

razlo's smile is cute...

he's just excited to fight who he deems a worthy opponent... i wish the situation wasn't so dire...

also, i need to share that when i watched stampede for the first time, this is what i said, copypasted directly from the group chat:

"as if the giant cross he carries isnt enough of a death flag on its own, the glass vials he's drinking are like. major flying high death flags."

i was thinking along the lines of "a character taking mysterious medicine is a death flag," but little did i know that the vials would literally be his cause of death. i was closer to the truth than i thought.

someone in the tag said something about ww going "catholic beast mode" and truly this is it. chapel was REALLY sent flying... fuck you fuck you fuck you you deserved that. i do feel a bit bad for razlo though.

a LOT of people have already questioned/referenced the theory that vash can literally hear ww's thoughts, but honestly i think this one is just a case of vash knowing ww so well that he understands what ww wants without doing that.

i actually do, truly, feel bad for razlo though. chapel was the closest thing he has to a father. thing is, chapel was just as abusive and controlling as livio's parents were. not in the exact same way, obviously, but abusive all the same. razlo has just... not been in a good situation. like, ever. he doesn't know anything else. he didn't see chapel's abuse for what it was.

*head in hands* VASHWOOD.......

they're so fucking stupid. they understand each other so well and yet so little. they can fight back-to-back seamlessly but fall so short when it comes to words. i'm going to cry.

chapter 4:

vashwood banter is back, but oh look, more dread. i've talked before about chapters that use familiar setups/scenarios but have an air of dread over them. 'colorless expression' was one. 'bastards and the blues' was another. i think this scene also falls into that.

what if i microwaved myself.

no!!! no silly expression!!! not when my heart is so full of dread!!!!

vash thinking about his feelings for wolfwood. i can't even articulate anything. i just want to cry.

"i wanted to see tomorrow with him." I WANTED. TO. SEE. TOMORROW. WITH!!! HIM!!!! i feel like shinji on the chair.

he can feel wolfwood's body dying. what if i ate rocks.

the way he clings so hard. he doesn't want to let wolfwood go, literally and figuratively.

the embrace. the hesitation. what if i ate glass.

the apology...... ww knows he's dying and he knows that vash knows. in yet another "i know he knows i know" situation. their whole fucking relationship.

i can't read this chapter without crying, fuck.

even razlo is like, "i want to fight both of you!" but even if vash joined wolfwood against razlo now, it would be too late...

i have nothing coherent to say. this post has become a record of my vashwood-induced mental breakdown, sorry. and we're only halfway through the volume...

Okay very last Trigun Maximum Vol. 2 thoughts before next week!

First off, Vash crying blood! I had fun coloring in the panel, because why not. This is my favorite weird monstrous quirk of his. It's so dramatic. It's so sad. It's so gross. I have so many questions. If he has a long hard cry, could be feasibly become anemic for a bit? Like a period? Does it make wiping away tears really difficult (tears dry and disappear, blood dries and it's fucking hard to get out without peroxide)? When does he cry normal tears vs blood? How many coats has he bled on? Does it turn his eyes reddish? I will never know peace.

Now some creepy Puppet Master bullshit. I didn't realize he actually killed all those people.. then, I guess, preserved them in a way to make puppets out of them? That he can control with his mind? That's some TMA Stranger shit right there. Jeezus Creezus. I love how this reminds me of the body horror of the plants too though. Also, Wolfwood's got legs for miles (god he's so Shaped).

OK, sorry these are kinda out of order. I mostly just wanted to put Blood Tears Boy panel up first. But these pages (out of order but in comparison) are *chefs kiss*

So. Wolfwood insisting that he's just human, and that's why he can't take the same chances in battle that Vash can. He's not a superhuman with insane marksman skills and rapid healing. He can't afford the same luxury of pacifism. He's working really hard to separate himself from Vash / separate Vash from humanity with "I'm only human" (god, did you really have to rub it in like that? surely there was a nicer way to say that, buddy).

And the next page here... okay I actually need some help with this. This is immediately after WW sees Vash get Bad Vibes from Puppet Guy, and I can't quite tell if WW is talking about Vash (I think so?) or the puppet master (the one sending Bad Vibes)? If he's talking to/about Vash, that means that he sees Vash having Big Feelings and feeling the shit radiating off the GHG and he's like... that's a monster. He's so fucking inhuman. (also sorry for the empath joke). The last panel on that page is grayed-out Vash, presumably feeling like shit after WW tells him he's nothing like a human.

Wolfwood is STILL feeding into Vash's monster shit. I feel like Trimax volume 2 involves not only a lot of Vash and Wolfwood clashing ideologically, but clashing in their identities. Wolfwood is terrified of Vash and is working so hard to distance himself from the weapon who blew a hole in the fifth moon while still grappling with his own terrible deeds. Vash is... well, reminding Wolfwood that for all that he is Wolfwood the Punisher, as much as he's killed, he's still got a soft heart and he still cares. He's just a cowardly kid hiding behind his weapon, not some macho gun-slinging undertaker. Wolfwood knows that already, as we see him deep in thought with his mental gymnastics quite a bit, but he's only ever talking to himself about it. He's very private about it.

Because he's so willing to hurt Vash about the opposite, I think being understood by Vash like this is what scares Wolfwood most of all.

Trigun Book Club! Trigun Book Club! (@trigunbookclub)

Way back in the mid-2000's, a young Pancake Ray was working their first job out of college at a local Giant Chain Bookstore and discovered that no one else working the store cared if they spent their breaks sitting on the floor in front of our rather impressive two and a half bays of manga we had and just... read them right there. Much manga was read, and among the titles read were both Trigun and what was available at that time of Trigun Maximum.

I remember very little from that initial read aside from 1) confusing fight scenes, and 2) enough deviation from the anime (which I had recently watched) that I didn't really have a place for at that time. The anime had wormed itself into a very special place in my heart, so between the differences and just not being in a good place spiritually to handle some of its more religious themes, I wasn't really sure what to do with it. It probably didn't help that, back then, the manga was nowhere near finished.

I still read every volume we had, because gods, I read anything that looked even remotely interesting on the manga shelves at that time.

Now, an older and (debatably) wiser Ray is going to be reading these along with the rest of the Trigun Book Club Denizens. But first, I want to start of with a quote from the notes in The New Oxford Annotated Bible (3rd Ed.) in their prelude to I Kings, which is what I'm currently studying:

There is, on the other hand, no neat correlation between sin and judgment in Kings, largely because of the compassionate character of the Judge who accepts the repentant sinner, who does not desire final judgment to fall upon his creatures, and who is always ready to find cause why such judgment should be delayed or mitigated.

It just seemed like something to keep in mind when thinking about the character of Vash... but YMMV.

Ok, first off... I love the alternate covers Nightow did. The stark contrast between the serious cleanliness of the covers and the crazy tongue-in-cheek alternate version really sets the tone.

LOL, "Deep Space Planet Future Gun Action!!" Yep, that's it. That's all it is.

How have I never seen Meryl as Luke Skywalker before??

Chapter 1: The $$60,000,000,000 Man

This poster says "Appearance: Unclear," but it also has a picture of him. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Vash's face is so goofy. It's like if his world isn't ACTIVELY ON FIRE, he doesn't know how to be serious. I do like the belts. When watching S1 of Stampede, I missed the belts. I hope S2 has more belts. Something something fetish gear.

I love that there's actually a tally of all this on a wall somewhere. SEVENTY FREAKING TWO MURDER CASES.

Kid: "Mom, I want a gun." Mom: "You already have a gun at home." The Gun At Home: *only shoots toy darts when you, a child no older than 8, are living in the Space Wild Wild West and think you need real bullets*

I love how quickly Vash goes from "OMG FOOD" face to SERIOUS EATING FACE.

And it's immediately followed by this CLOSE-UP ASS SHOT. WHYYYYYY???

I don't know who this cloaked guy who's cocking his shotgun by shaking it vertically is, but I love his stupid hair.

Yeah, you don't get to kill the protagonist THAT fast....

WW isn't even here yet and Nightow's already filling panels with man-tiddies...

LOL, he counted ALL the bullets in that page that was... just... it was just bullet fire. Somehow he counted them all. For every gun. And now everyone else has to leave stripped down to their boxers.

I love that someone, somewhere decided they needed to have a pinball machine all the way out here in nowheresville.

Ah there are the girls. Milly looks so worried about the catcalls, but Meryl? Meryl looks bored.

Chapter 2: Looney Tunes

Ok, first off, this chapter title just makes me think of ep 12 of Stampede when So-and-So starfishes his way out a window before floundering in the air for a second of hangtime and then falling.

Exposition! Huzzah!

Population decline slowing = humans adapting to the new environment. Resilient little buggers.... I know someone who probably HATES that statistic.

So, basically... before July, Vash was small beans. Or going by another name.

Aaaand straight into his goofy poses. This man is made of rubber, I swear.

LOL, why is he talking in French?! I guess a guy's gotta have his hobbies....

But Meryl... I'm with Milly here. Is it really that dangerous??

Ah, yes. The ol' "they'll understand me better if I just speak louder" trick. A favorite of Americans traveling in non-English-speaking countries when said American hasn't bothered to learn even the tiniest bit of the local language.

Current favorite Vash Chaos Pose:

LOL, "MY DEEPEST APOLOGIES FOR INTERRUPTING THIS CONFUSION." This feels like such a Japanese thing to say. It's like, "I know you're all engaged in frantic chaos right now, and because you're engaged in it, it must be very important to you, so I, the intruder, must offer my sincere regret for interrupting it."

I wonder how this version of Milly will merge with a Milly who was crazy enough to volunteer for the position of Meryl's partner in Stampede.

This Vash is definitely not so keen on being caught, even in the face of suffering women and children.

But here he is, protecting the very people who had guns in his face a second ago.

Chapter 3: Hard Puncher

Hahahahaha, there goes the bounty. Can't put a bounty on a natural disaster. The federal government has officially labeled him "not human." *pats Vash*

Actually, he looks kinda happy about this. I guess not having a bounty on your head anymore might do that.

The difference in his expression when greeting Meryl versus greeting Milly....

For as terrible as Mr. Nebraska himself is, I always appreciated how much he seems to genuinely care about his son in his own weird way.

Gods, I'm glad every other version got rid of his gun legs, though. That's... a Thing, and I don't like this Thing.

And just like that, Vash goes from "concerned about these girls constantly being around him" to "mildly intimidated by them." Beautiful.

i read ww earth 1 last night (vol 1, 2, and 3)

it was rather mid.

i feel like they way over-emphasized the kink thing. like i know its what people remember about golden age ww, but last time i read golden age ww i do not remember it being such a big thing in the worldbuilding of the amazons or in the stories. and this isn't me kink shaming or w/e, it just felt like that was p much the only worldbuilding axis morrison was interested in, leading to a very flat story.

if i never once again heard the phrase "in submission to loving authority" that would be too soon.

I also feel like not many amazons characters were flshed out beyond the submission to loving authority thing. like artemis is like 'let's kill all men' and then diana is like 'no lets fight' and then artemis gets her butt kicked and she's like 'haha ok ;) just making sure you're strong enough to be queen we don't have to kill all men lets make out'

like i would love to see artemis and diana making out! if it wasn't an 'obviously diana has to be stronger and righter and artemis has to follow her'. like what happened to her arrogance being artemis's best quality?

a bunch of stuff was just not fleshed out.

golden-age inspired misandrist amazons was weird considering in the very first wonder woman appearance we see the amazons are all fine with helping save steve and not locking him up forever. like. i in general feel like the people who want amazons to hate men miss the point of them completely.

anyway overall it felt very boring and like someone who heard a lot of golden age ww trivia, but didn't care much for ww as a character.

Omg hiii!!!

I actually liked it!! Not as much as WG 2021, but it was a fun, solid introduction to Amazon characters for me, esp with the inter-group beef and what distinguishes the Bana-Migdhall from the others. There were so many fun interactions and it made me realize I honestly misconceived the Amazon characters as being very strict and boring before I started reading their comics.

The plot itself and the *lowers voice* murder??? Actually took me off guard 😭 I saw Hippolyta and Phillipus kissing and I was like “Awww lesbians” and then THAT happened and it was like oh nevermind we can’t have peace around here

Cassie playing detective was cute though, but Artemis baby what are you DOING????

I also enjoyed the parallels between Nubia stepping up as Queen and leader versus Diana acting more impulsive out of understandable grief, but towards the end Diana using the lessons she learned in man’s world made me EMOTIONAL omg! She had a really interesting role amongst the Amazons that I appreciated. And it was so fun seeing Diana be upset, unraveled and making questionable choices as opposed to the voice of reason role she carries in the JLA and JLD.

YARAAAAAA <333 Ong I posted before that Yara made me SO SAD while reading because I also miss my mom and find it so difficult to be around “family” without her. The Esquecida definitely love her!!! But her loneliness was so understandable and heartfelt for me. And omg the end with her and Diana 😭 She’s right!! Why are we calling a woman in her twenties Wonder Girl lmfaooooo (THO I LOVE THE FORESHADOWING FOR FUTURE STATE OMG I CANT WAIT TO READ THAT)

Watching Diana, Philipus, Donna, and Yara work together during the trial was another fave moment for me, esp when they were bickering while running for their lives 😭

So yeah it was enjoyable!! But that might change with the more Wonder stories I read haha. Up next I think i’m gonna go through Nubia’s books and Future State: Wonder Woman. I’ve also seen WW Vol 2 Year One recommended but for some reason I can’t find it online!!! :( I’ll keep looking.

Oh and yeah there was a lack of Donna tbh, like she had screen time (page time lol), but I didn’t feel much connection to her in this story like I usually do (i don’t talk about her often but I do like donna!!) and Artemis was also a bit underdeveloped so I gotta find out what’s going on there too

Wonder Woman depicted in combat with Max Lord and capturing him with her golden lasso. The WW/Lord conflict in the 2005 DC Infinite Crises series was one of the most controversial in the Amazon’s canon, because it ends with WW murdering Lord in cold blood by snapping his neck. The context is Lord’s own mind control of Superman, who he has turned into a lethal weapon to destroy the Justice League and his order to the Man of Steel to commit suicide which, after being captured by Diana, he refuses to rescind. The killing, which is broadcast across the world, destroys Wonder Woman’s reputation as a super heroine and leads to an almost permanent breach with Superman and Batman.

The murder of Lord appears in Wonder Woman Vol 2 #219 (2005). Lord does reappear in DC Comics and this illustration is from his re-emergence in Wonder Woman #759 in 2020.
