You hadn't returned to the neighborhood since then, and now you're expected to come back and take care of your grandmother's long forgotten house.

Return to the neighborhood that provided you with some of your favorite memories, visit childhood friends, met the strange new family who moved in down the road, and learn what truly happened the night you were left with the scars physically and mentally that you still carried with you.

Andrew Thornton lived right next door to you and is the twin brother of your friend lost the night of the attack. He wasn't there that night, and you were forbidden from speaking to each other before your departure. Once loud, and outgoing- he is now the opposite of everything you knew. Quiet, and closed off. Andrew moved away from the neighborhood as soon as he was of age, but you two run into each other when you return to town. Find out his side of the story, and see if you two can really reconnect or if it's too late.

Harper Phillips was another member of your summer friend group, and lived towards the end of the street. She was by your side the night of the attack. She was always laughing and following the older kids, like yourself around. Now she seems to be the same as before, carefree and accepting. Wait until those brief moments of quiet hits and you can see the edges of the mask crack. Has she truly moved on, or is she just as desperate for answers as you might be?

Riley Cruz lived next door to Harper, but never wanted to hang out. Your group of 4 constantly invited them to join but they always had something to do, or somewhere to go. Assumed to just be antisocial, Riley has turned into an outgoing person who oozes self confidence, and always has a sarcastic comment waiting to be let out at any moment. Why didn't they ever want to hang out? And why do they seem so interested in you now?

Theodore Johnson moved into the neighborhood a year after the attack, and has been there since. Charming, and seemingly sincere, no one can say anything bad about him or his family. While living at the very end of the street for 10 years now, not much is known about his family. Theodore reaches out to you quickly, and seems to know details no one else should know about that night. Who is he and how does he know the things that he knows?

WASHINGTON — “It’s the biggest federalism issue in a long time,” Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht of the Texas Supreme Court said on the phone the other day. “Maybe ever.”

He was explaining why the Conference of Chief Justices, a group representing the top state judicial officers in the nation, had decided to file a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in a politically charged election-law case. The brief urged the court to reject a legal theory pressed by Republicans that would give state legislatures extraordinary power.

Nicholas Stephanopoulos, a law professor at Harvard, said the brief underscored how momentous the decision in the case could be.

“It’s highly unusual for the Conference of Chief Justices to file an amicus brief in the Supreme Court,” he said. “It’s even rarer for the conference to do so in a controversial, ideologically charged case.”

If the Supreme Court adopts the theory, it will radically reshape how federal elections are conducted by giving state lawmakers independent authority, not subject to review by state courts, to set election rules in conflict with state constitutions.

The conference’s brief, which was nominally filed in support of neither party, urged the Supreme Court to reject that approach, sometimes called the independent state legislature theory. The Constitution, the brief said, “does not oust state courts from their traditional role in reviewing election laws under state constitutions.”

The case, Moore v. Harper, No. 21-1271, will be argued in the coming months. It concerns a congressional voting map drawn by the North Carolina Legislature favoring Republicans that was rejected as a partisan gerrymander by the state’s Supreme Court. Republican lawmakers seeking to restore the legislative map argued that the state court had been powerless to act.

Four conservative members of the U.S. Supreme Court have issued opinions indicating that they may be ready to endorse the independent state legislature theory. Professor Stephanopoulos said the conference’s decision to raise its voice was telling.

“That the conference is willing to take a stand here highlights how extreme and dangerous the argument of the North Carolina legislators is,” he said. “That argument would undermine the authority of state courts to interpret state law — a bedrock principle of our system of federalism, and one that conservative justices historically championed, not questioned.”

Empowering state legislatures at the expense of state courts would, these days at least, generally seem to help Republicans, who control more legislatures.

But Chief Justice Hecht, who was elected as a Republican and has called for ending partisan elections for judges in his state, said the constitutional principles should remain constant.

“Politics can shift,” he said. “You can say, ‘We want these people to make the call because they’re in the right party.’ But tomorrow they might not be in the right party — but they still get to make the call.”

Evan Caminker, a law professor at the University of Michigan who represents the conference along with two prominent Supreme Court specialists, Carter G. Phillips and Virginia A. Seitz, said the filing was part of a useful dialogue.

“This brief provides a rare and important opportunity for federal Supreme Court justices to receive direct input from their peers who sit on state supreme courts,” Professor Caminker said. “State justices have a central stake in this case because, in our federalist system, they typically have the final say over the meaning of state law, and here they can directly explain to their federal counterparts why their traditional state role is worthy of protection.”

The independent state legislature theory is based on a literal reading of two similar provisions of the U.S. Constitution. The one at issue in the North Carolina case, the Elections Clause, says: “The times, places and manner of holding elections for senators and representatives, shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof.”

That means, North Carolina Republicans argued, that state legislatures have sole responsibility among state institutions for drawing congressional districts and that state courts have no role to play in applying their states’ constitutions.

The North Carolina Supreme Court rejected that argument, saying that was “repugnant to the sovereignty of states, the authority of state constitutions and the independence of state courts, and would produce absurd and dangerous consequences.”

Texas and a dozen other states led by Republicans filed a brief supporting the North Carolina lawmakers. “The Elections Clause forbids state courts from usurping state legislatures’ districting authority,” it said.

The Conference of Chief Justices’ brief said that reading was too cramped. “While the text of the Elections Clause requires that state legislatures prescribe the laws governing federal elections,” it said, “it does not otherwise displace the states’ established authority to determine the final content of their election laws, including through normal judicial review for constitutionality.”

Chief Justice Hecht said the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the case was unlikely to be limited to redistricting and could open the floodgates for all sorts of election challenges in federal courts.

“The Constitution’s language is very broad about time, place and manner of elections,” he said. “So that’s mail-in ballots, what it takes to register, what ID you have to show, how late the polls are open, how the ballots are counted, who gets to sit and watch when they do. The state courts get scores of these cases in virtually every election.”

The case, he added, “will profoundly affect both the state and the federal courts.”

The Battle of the Bulge - 1130 on 22 December 1944 the encircled town of Bastogne, Belgium - 4 German soldiers, waving 2 white flags, approached the American lines. The senior officer was a Major Wagner of the 47th Panzer Corps. The Americans defending in that location were members of F Company of the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The Germans explained that they had a written message to be presented to the American Commander in Bastogne.

The message read: (edited for length) "To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne. The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the Presentation of this note. The German Commander."

The Division Operations Officer, Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard recalled that McAulliffe when advised initially asked, "They want to surrender?" Moore told him, "No sir, they want us to surrender." McAulliffe arose and erupted in anger, took the paper, looked at it, said "Us surrender, aw nuts!", and dropped it on the floor and left the HQ.

Upon returning to the division headquarters, McAulliffe was informed that the two German officers were still waiting at the F Company Command Post. Since they brought a formal demand they felt they were entitled to a formal reply. McAulliffe asked that Col. Harper (the 327 Regimental commander) be summoned to the Division Headquarters. Harper, who was still inspecting his units' positions, was contacted by radio.

When Harper arrived at the Headquarters, he was asked to wait outside of the closed door to McAulliffe's quarters. Inside, in the presence of his staff, McAulliffe wondered aloud, "Well, I don't know what to tell them." At that point, Kinnard said, "What you said initially would be hard to beat." McAulliffe asked "What do you mean?" Kinnard, said, "Sir, you said nuts." All members of the staff enthusiastically agreed, so McAulliffe wrote it down on a message pad and said, "Have it typed up."

The reply was typed up, centered on a full sheet of paper. It read: "December 22, 1944 To the German Commander, N U T S ! The American Commander"

Harper took the reply and drove to the F Company Command Post and the German Major who asked, "Is that reply negative or affirmative?" Harper said, "The reply is decidedly not affirmative".

A true classic, and the rest is history...

#City23 Update - End of January: Nottingham and Cape Crescent

I've written about my #City23 projects here and on Cohost. You can check out my last post.

I took a weeklong break due to a death in the family, so this is the my end-of-January post.

Nottingham

My previous posts introduced the Three-Foxes Inn, which I later decided was near the Bar Gate and Chapel Bar area. The gate heads toward Derby and the forests and hills to the Northwest. The Three Foxes is owned by Madame Jarry and two of her three sons. I added an alewife who makes the inn's brews, couple of other residents: Colman who murders strangers in order sustain his wife's life, Ruhl the Baker who does favors for the sheriff in order to protect his daughter (a sheriff's hostage), and the informal mendicants Earnmund and Mindred, clairvoyants and necromancers who exchange prophecies for money and live on the estate of a local priory.

I started last week by adding a Gruffin's Candle Shop to the Chapel Bar area, adding three NPCs who work there: - Gruffin of Clun, sometimes called "Old Clun," the owner, an apparently immortal wax magician who makes candles, spell candles, and magical waxen masks and figures. - Vel, his oldest apprentice, a young man who rarely speaks, but can be heard singing at night as he practices his magic. - Yvaine, his younger apprentice, an escaped aristocrat who disdains the notion of gender and has a talent for burglary.

I've also gone back to the Three Foxes and added a few details: - A random list of customers, including a shy trans tough, an outgoing trans harper, a prostitute, a farmer who's having prophetic dreams, a former Templar, and a German scholar-turned-Nottingham-pastrymaker. - An aristocrat living secretly as Azela's apprentice alewife.

Finally, I've added Godfrey Draper (secretly an agent of the sheriff): a brutish lout of a guard who's playing the fool to lure people into becoming careless about their support of their forest outlaw heroes.

Cape Crescent

This week in Cape Crescent, I've focused on the Lunar Lounge, a queer nightclub near the shore, popular with locals and tourists alike. - Drag Duo and owners Trent Keith (Pearl Dyver in drag) and Sylvia Herrera (Manor Bourne in drag) are also member of a local wolf pack who are concerned about the designer drugs that the Ghost Bay Foundation seems to be introducing to the town's nightlife. - Immortal bartender Griffin Declan who shifts his identity (and sometimes his face) every decades or two. - Go-go dancer Chance Reyes who has an innate (and unwanted) talent for necromancy. - Barback Kevin Phillips, who ran away from home and found a strange book that contains the spirit of Tarlton Caine's own runaway claivoyant son (who doesn't want his dad). - Several customers you might meet on the dance floor, including Dr. Jenna Caine (Tarlton Caine's oldest child and mentee), an out-of-work actor, a new resident who caught their ex-husband cheating and came to Cape Crescent for a new life, a Ghost Bay Foundation tech writer, the managing editor of the local paper, and a drug-dealer.

Reading

This week I also started working my way through some classic city-focused adventures and supplements from games of yore. Right now, it's Flying Buffalo's CityBook I: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker.

Coming Up

In Nottingham, I think it's time to shift and get into the sprawl of Nottingham Castle. Over in Cape Crescent, I'll figure out whether the best thing to start next is exploring Tarlton Caine's organization or the Ghost Bay Foundation's off-shore HQ.

Princess Katherine: I’m so glad you had a great play date with Hali, Phillip. Daddy and I have to get off the plane so I'll call you tonight and yes, I'll show him the photos.

Princess Katherine: The kids said hi and they love you. Phillip said he really likes Hali and hopes she can come over for a play date at his house soon.

Prince Rainier: Let him be a kid, Kate. I know what you’re doing!

Princess Katherine: I’m not doing anything.

Prince Rainier: You’re already planning his wedding to this little girl. Let’s just get this tour over with. I’m tired and beyond ready to go home.

Princess Katherine: Four more days, that’s all. I love you, darling. I know this tour was not what you wanted to do and you sacrificed a lot these four weeks with me.

Prince Rainier: You’re my wife and the future Queen. I knew what life would be like I just thought we’d have more time before being thrust into such rigorous royal life. The kids are still so young, Kate. We’re missing so much of their life.

Princess Katherine: I know. I wish the kids could have come. They would have loved this military welcome!

Prince Rainier: The Prime Minister and his wife look so excited. Okay, four more day!

Princess Katherine: Look at the people of San Myshuno who came to welcome us!

Prince Rainier: What branches of military are here?

Princess Katherine: The Royal Army and the Royal Air Force are both based out of San Myshuno. The Royal Navy is the only branch in Brindleton Bay.

Prime Minister Antonio Mace: Welcome to San Myshuno, Your Royal Highness. The people and I have been greatly looking forward to your visit!

Princess Katherine: The city has developed so much, Prime Minister. The Duke and I are excited to see the people over the next few days.

Antonio: We will enjoy a relaxing night at the ballet tonight. I’m sure you two have had a busy three weeks. Our elderly, at the York Senior Center, have a special treat for you and the Duke on tomorrow!

Leyla Mace: How was the flight from Evergreen Harbor, Your Royal Highness?

Prince Rainier: Quite well, thank you.

Leyla: I’m sure you both will enjoy the San Myshuno Ballet tonight. The theatre was recently renovated and tonight is opening night of Romeo and Juliet!

Princess Katherine: Harper Jabari posted a picture on Simstagram of the kids from their play date the other day. Look!

Prince Rainier: He’s gotten so big in three weeks! I miss him so much. What does her caption say? She tagged us?

Princess Katherine: She said that when we return from the Commonwealth Tour, it’ll be our turn to host.

Prince Rainier: That photo will be on Goodmorning Windenburg first thing in the morning. Great! lol

Princess Katherine: Let’s have another baby.

Prince Rainier: Another baby? Grace just turned 3. We’ve finally stopped buying pampers and have missed three weeks of our current children’s lives, including Grace’s birthday. Now is not the time to have another baby.

Princess Katherine: I still think we should. After the tour, our life will settle down and we can talk about it more.

Prince Rainier: Our life won't settle down too much. My parents called today. They’re coming to visit.

Princess Katherine: Rainier! I can't believe you said yes without talking to me first.

Prince Rainier: I had no choice! Unlike your parents, they haven't seen their grandchildren in months. They’re coming, Kate.

Princess Katherine: Don't expect me to be around then. Your family hates me and since they’re coming to see the kids, they won't even miss me. After Garter Day, I’ll go to Sumpterton with my parents. When your family leaves you and the children can join us there.

Prince Rainier: I’m not going to Sumpterton. We’ve been away from our own home for weeks. I’ll send the kids but I'm staying home.

Romance options pt 1

Andrew Thornton

When you all were children, Andrew was the leader of the pack. He always had an idea of what to get up to, and where you all were going that day. While only a few minutes past his twin brothers’ birth, Andrew was the oldest of the group. He liked to say he was not just Elliotts big brother, he was everyone’s big brother, and he would be there to protect you all. He was at home, sick, the night of the attack and wasn’t allowed to speak to his friends about what happened to his brother.

Not much is known about him as an adult, except he was much quieter and more kept to himself. While time brought Riley and Harper together, Andrew only distanced himself farther from the pack and moved from Mrytle Ln the same month he turned 18. Luckily, or unluckily, fate brought him to Mrytle Ln the same day that a certain neighbor returned to the same street giving them both the chance to finally address what happened that night.

Description: Male, 6’1, Light skin, with slight tan to it. He has honey blonde curly hair that goes just past his ears and deep green eyes. He has a strong, chiseled face. He’s usually seen in dark pants, and either white or black button up shirts that he keeps rolled up to his elbow and tucked in. Always wearing a small silver necklace with a rocket on it, matching the necklace of his deceased brother.

Harper Phillips

As children, Harper was the youngest of the bunch. She was always happy to be invited to whatever adventure you and the twins were going on and was always up for a good laugh. Having fun was the most important thing to her as a child. She joined you and Elliott the night of the attack and was the first to notice that something was amiss. Only asking to return home once, she continued with you guys and was there the moment it happened. You and she found safety and were together during the questioning.

As she got older, she stayed in the neighborhood and continued living with her family. She started spending time with Riley, and new neighbor, Theodore and got a small bartending job in town. She comes off as friendly, and accepting with everyone she meets. She keeps up the aura of being carefree and happy until someone brings up that fearful night out of fear of being considered crazy or a liar. Two things she never wants to experience again.

Description: Female, 5’5, and olive skin. She has incredibly curly, and usually messy brown hair that goes down just past her shoulders and expressive hazel eyes. With a soft, round face and an upturned mouth, she always looks very friendly and sociable. Wears a mixture of clothing, mostly neutral colors with shorts or jeans and a tank top, or summer dresses and minimal accessories. Harper has a single tattoo of four roses that go up her left arm.

I'll say that our past threads were quite interesting, specifically with Seb and Nat in their earlier days as an example with how their interactions were towards each other from both versions of their relationships. If for Wesker and Dullahan, I would like to see more from them despite the lack of face to face interaction, such as how someone like her who is on the grey area associate herself with someone who does bad shit for the sake of his goals. Especially how she once teased Harper for her relationship with him lol.

Looking at our past conversation, I feel like we should talk more on our character's relationship, and I don't mean romantically of course, than the plotting ideas. There should be a balance to help find a way for our characters to do together. For example, you suggested an enemy to acquaintances to enemy with Sterling and Phillip, which sounds like an interesting idea, and I want to see why and how does it make these two have that kind of relationship towards each other in their own profession standpoint or in general towards each other.
