Third Thursday events and exhibitions for September 19
The next Third Thursday — the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia — is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
This Third Thursday will offer three events in addition to the exhibitions. One of the venues will be closed.
Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia
Yoga in the Galleries, 6 p.m. — Join us for a yoga class surrounded by works of art in the galleries. Led by instructors from Five Points Yoga, this program is free and open to both beginner and experienced yogis. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis; tickets are available at the front desk starting at 5:15 p.m. Yoga mats provided.
Museum Mix, 8 – 11 p.m. — The museum’s thrice-annual late-night art party features a live deejay, free refreshments and galleries open until 11 p.m. The music will be by DJ Zelium. Warren Slater draws from his Australian upbringing and interest in Aboriginal mark-making to create his pulsating pointillist landscapes picturing beaches and surf culture. Hannah Betzel’s vivid abstractions vibrate almost musically, conjuring images of the sea.
“Building Facades” — In Gallery II, on the second floor, Mike Landers’ solo exhibition of sophisticated, symmetrical, minimally composed photographs will take you down memory lane. Images of Barnett’s Newsstand, Helix and The Gap will make you nostalgic for nights wandering downtown Athens in the late 1990s and early 2000s and make you realize how much has changed.

Mr. Ballentine, who was licensed in 2002, was disbarred. After a four-day federal jury trial, he was found guilty on one count of fraud, one count of mail and wire fraud, two counts of bank fraud, and two counts of making false statements to financial institutions. He acted as a lawyer in real estate closings that involved more than two dozen fraudulent loans that bilked lenders out of almost $10 million. He was suspended on an interim basis and until further order of the Court on October 21, 2015.

"It Didn't Occur To Me Until It Occurred To Me": Donald Rooum, Pt2
This week on The Final Straw we’ll be airing the second half of our interview with anarchist, author and cartoonist nonagenarian, Donald Rooum from Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Donald has written introductions to anarchism and has been a leading organizer in movements in the U.K. against nuclear war, the death penalty and the use of corporal punishment against children in schools. This summer, Bursts and William found their way to London and were delighted to sit down and chat with Donald in the East End hear his stories.
In the first portion of this chat, which aired on July 29th, 2018, Donald spoke about his beginnings in anarchism, his art studies, his time creating the Wildcat comics for which he’s best known, anarchists of his time from the 1940’s through today and his activism mentioned above.
Now, you’ll hear about Donald Rooum’s “15 minutes of fame” in which he was nicked on his way to a demonstration against a visit to London by King Paul of Greece and Queen Frederika in 1963 and charged by Detective Sergeant Harold “Tanky” Challenor for carrying a brick to the demonstration. The problem for Donald is that the brick was placed in his pocket by Challenor while he was in police custody. The problem for Challenor is that Donald was smart enough to realize this, collect the proof of the framing attempt and successfully defend himself in court against the charges. In what became known as the “Challenor Affair”, Donald’s self-defense shook the public trust in policing in the U.K. and lead to the Detective Sergeant’s downfall for corruption. Donald also talks about the case that overshadowed the “Challenor Affair” at the time, known as the Profumo Affair. After that, Donald defends the work of Max Stirner on Egoism, Benjamin Tucker’s translation and it’s mistakes, Eddie Shaw (mentioned in this libcom article) and the Glasgow anarchists of the 1940’s, multi-generationality in anarchism, human nature and anarchism, Rojava, and Murray Bookchin. Of note, Donald confuses Murray Bookchin’s “Social Ecology” ideas with the “Deep Ecology”, which Bookchin railed against.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill’s hopes of winning a third term in Republican-dominated Missouri could depend both on convincing voters she’s sufficiently moderate and how voters feel about President Donald Trump, who is backing her Republican challenger.

Republicans nominated Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, who could be one of the toughest opponents McCaskill has faced in a long political career that also included stints as a state legislator and auditor. McCaskill easily won the Democratic primary.
Retaining seats like McCaskill’s is critical for Democrats if they are to have any chance of gaining control of the Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 advantage and have Vice President Mike Pence to break any ties.
“Democrats have to ‘run the table,'” said Steven Puro, a retired political scientist at Saint Louis University. “But the Republicans have a few key states where they think they can build a firewall, and Missouri is one of them.”
Republican Jay Kirschbaum, 60-year-old employee benefits consultant from Chesterfield, on Tuesday said he believed Hawley was the Republican who could finally defeat McCaskill. The last time McCaskill was on the ballot, she faced Republican Rep. Todd Akin, whose campaign derailed after an interview in which he discussed “legitimate rape” in the context of abortion.

Hawley is throwing his support behind Trump, who has heaped praise on the candidate and attended multiple fundraisers for him. On Monday, he tweeted that Trump “asked me to take back this Senate seat for Missourians,” and Hawley pledged that he would.
“Hawley has clearly hitched his train to the president,” University of Missouri-St. Louis political scientist David Kimball said. “That’s a calculated gamble that overall, the president will help.”
In Trump country, McCaskill often cites the more than 50 town halls she held since 2017 in rural areas of the state where support for the president is strong. She’s campaigning on issues that could play to both Republicans and Democrats, including health care and high drug costs. She has clashed with the president on trade and some other issues, but she also touts areas of agreement with the administration and other Republicans.
“Always a good day when we pass the Defense Authorization by wide bipartisan majorities,” she tweeted after a $716 billion defense policy bill passed the Senate this month. “That’s how this place is supposed to work. Compromise means getting things done instead of just trying to score political points.”
Patricia Green, a 70-year-old retired Columbia resident, voted for McCaskill on Tuesday and said she’s “about as good as a Democrat can get.”
“She doesn’t put up a big fight like (Sen. Elizabeth) Warren does, but I think she’s good for Missouri,” Green said, praising the senator for her “fairness” and “common sense.”
Hawley has attempted to paint McCaskill as a liberal obstructionist, citing her vote against Justice Neil Gorsuch as an example, as well as an out-of-touch elitist. Ads by his campaign and outside groups slammed her for flying on a private plane to some stops on a recent tour of the state in her RV.
Democratic criticism of Hawley has centered on him joining a lawsuit as attorney general against President Barack Obama’s health care law. He has drawn criticism for campaigning against climbing political ladders, then entering the Senate race shortly after taking office as attorney general.
He’s also faced pushback over allegations of corruption related to a top donor to his attorney general campaign. The Democratic Senate Majority PAC has run multiple ads accusing him of refusing to investigate, although the attorney general’s office does not have initial jurisdiction in such cases.
Democrats also have attempted to tie Hawley to the state’s Republican former Gov. Eric Greitens, who resigned amid political and personal scandal as lawmakers considered impeaching him.
Although Hawley publicly called for Greitens to step down, Democrats say he took too long to act and didn’t do enough to investigate.

The show had been covered numerous times by the media since it hit the airwaves. On his show he discussed ideas and issues targeted not just to the African-American audience, but to a wider audience as well. Ballentine had championed the call for action for the Jena 6 and called for the "National Economic Blackout". Ballentine was described by The New York Times as "one of black talk radio's new stars". He led the Radio One (Company)|Radio ONE national voter registration campaign. Covering both the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Conventions, as well as the Congressional Black Caucus; Ballentine's show had featured such high-profile guests as President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Al Sharpton, and Allen Gravitt.
