Tumblr media
Además de los Rams, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders tampoco desconocen la derrota tras haber superado a Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets y Miami Dolphins.

The History of Baton Twirling!
The origin of Baton Twirling is unknown. The World Baton Twirling Federation says, "that it may have started in Eastern Europe and Asia at dance festivals where the goers used knives, guns, torches and sticks to twirl with and toss." The "activity" of Baton Twirling advanced into the armies of some countries which "twirled" or "spun" rifles during marches. When they paraded they added a rifle twirler to the front of the marchers. Later, the rifle was switched out for a "mace". "
Tumblr media
The mace barer or "drum major" twirled the baton (mace) while leading the army or band.
In the 1950s Baton Twirling associations in the U.S. began to develop. According to WBTF, two of the largest U.S. associations today are the United States Twirling Association (USTA) and the National Baton Twirling Association (NBTA). Both hold national competitions every year and officiate at competitions at local state and regional levels. Twirling the baton evolved from just being majorettes who marched with the band and performed at half time into a competitive sport in the 1960s.
The First World Championship
WBTF states, "the first world championship was held in 1980 in Seattle, Washington, USA with athletes from ten countries of the World Baton Twirling Federation competing in three divisions: Junior Women, Senior Women, and Men."
First Championship Winners!
At this event, all three World Champions represented the United States of America:
Junior Women: Bonnie Palacious
Senior Women: Pam Harris
Men: Michael Cruz
Bonnie Palacious
"Bonnie Palacious of Benavides, Texas, is ten years old and attends Benavides Primary School where she is in the 5th grade . Bonnie also enjoys gymnastics and skating. She became interested in the sport of twirling because her sister used to twirl."
youtube
Pam Harris
"Pam Harris of Kettering, Ohio, is eighteen years old and attends the University of Dayton where she majors in computer science. She was the valedictorian of her 1980 high school class . Besides twirling, she jogs, plays tennis and likes to bike . Pam enjoys twirling for the competition, traveling, friends she has made, the challenges it offers, and the self discipline required."
youtube
Michael Cruz
"Michael Cruz of San Jose, California, is twenty years. old and attends San Jose State University where he majors in advertising and graphic arts. Michael is an avid tennis player and lists his idol as Bjorn Borg. He enjoys twirling because of the travel involved and the self-discipline required in the sport."

Alfredo Zitarrosa- 5 Discos (1966-1989)
Empezó a sonar "Stefanie".

#3 GUITARRA NEGRA (1977) + GUITARRA NEGRA (1985)

Remote Guest Speakers Enrich CSUN’s Virtual Classes
From the comfort of her living room, Mayra Lopez, a third-year journalism major, got to hear from professional role models — journalists from ABC and NBC.
The journalists spoke to a class of students who produce the Valley View News broadcast program. All journalism students and faculty were invited to join through Zoom.
Since the switch to virtual classes, there have been many changes to the way students are used to learning, but there are some rewards in the new ways that some departments are dealing with this transition. CSUN’s Department of Journalism has taken advantage of this situation by bringing in guest speakers over Zoom to speak to their students about various topics, including tales from the front lines of the day’s most pressing topics.
“I really like talking to working journalists,” Lopez said. “Now that I have so much free time I’ve been going to a lot more [guest speaker events].”
Lessons from national experts
The journalism department isn’t the only department on campus enhancing its classes with experts from far away. Nearly every college has in some form included guest speakers in their rosters. Some of these guest speakers were already scheduled, either in person or virtually, and others were invited after most of campus closed, adding to the virtual learning experience.
The guest speakers come from all over the country, in a wide range of professional fields, including biology and finance, and marriage and family therapy. Some have spoken to a single class, while others were available to students throughout a department.
The speakers have helped prove that although the move to virtual learning was unplanned, the lessons can still be meaningful.
Before the switch to virtual learning, Ray Hong, professor and associate chair of the Department of Biology, had invited speakers from schools including Stanford, Washington State and the University of Mississippi to speak on campus for weekly BIOL 490, Tutorial Studies and BIOL 692, Biology Colloquium seminars. With travel to campus now impossible, Hong worked to move the seminars to the virtual space, where they were still available to all biology students.
“In a way, more students can now be in the front row seats in a virtual environment,” Hong said.
Deaf Studies professor Lissa Stapleton offered a combination of pre-recorded and live guest speakers to her DEAF 360, Deaf Culture, and DEAF 496B, Black Deaf Communities, classes, some of which were pre-planned to be virtual and some of which were originally intended to be live. The speakers for the Black Deaf Communities class were national and international experts, all of which were always scheduled to participate via Zoom. For her DEAF 415, Deaf Community Service class, a live panel was turned into a series of interviews of grad students and faculty members from across the country to expose her students to programs outside of California.
Engaging online
At least one virtual guest lecturer came from not far away — Wendy Murawski, executive director and endowed chair for the Michael D. Eisner Center for Teaching and Learning at CSUN, joined professor Marty Eisen’s special education class to model co-teaching. This was supposed to be a face-to-face endeavor, but the educators adapted.
“We wanted them to learn they don’t need to give up student engagement or differentiation just because they are in an online format,” Murawski said.
In professor Mu-Sheng “Shane” Chang’s FIN 434 Life and Health Insurance class, students were also offered the opportunity to speak with professionals, including Cristian Iglesias of The Cheesecake Factory Inc., Steve Eilers of General Reinsurance – a subsidiary of the Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and Leslie McKee of Aon, who provided a worldly view on risk management, reinsurance, and healthcare.
“The students learned about relevant subject matter from these practitioners,” Chang said. “I firmly believe their presentations were very rewarding and successful to help students better understand how risk management concepts lectured in this class are applied outside of the classroom.
The Department of Urban Studies and Planning even held mock interviews for graduating internship students with department alumni. The alumni who participate usually live within driving distance, but department chair Rob Kent said the virtual format allowed for participation of alumni from the San Francisco Bay Area, Oregon and Washington.
“It is a great event for students and for alumni alike,” Kent said. “Students get to meet alumni who were in their shoes here at CSUN before and to learn first-hand about the profession and the job market.”
Connecting with students
Adolfo Flores, a journalist at BuzzFeed News based in Texas who graduated from CSUN in 2010, has visited campus several times before. Recently, he joined professor Jose Luis Benavides’s Spanish language journalism class via Zoom to talk about his experiences reporting at the border.
“I’m able to give students advice I wish someone had given to me,” said Flores about chatting with students at his alma mater. “I also see it as a way of giving back the time my professors put into me when I was in college.”
While having guest speakers in their classrooms is nothing new to the journalism students, the new virtual format has allowed students an easier access to these events. Before, a challenge for many students was getting to campus on days they wouldn’t normally have classes.
“It may be easier in this format, because one of the challenges of getting guest speakers anywhere on the CSUN campus is that people always complain about the drive,” said Department of Journalism Chair Linda Bowen. “Now, they don’t have to leave their houses.”

Fruit & Produce Co Headquarters
Fruit & Produce Co Headquarters, Washington
Surrounded by the world’s most high-tech fruit packing warehouses, the 16,500-square-foot Washington Fruit & Produce Co. headquarters is conceived as an oasis amidst a sea of concrete and low-lying brush landscape. Tucked behind landforms and site walls, this courtyard-focused office complex provides a refuge from the noise and activity of the industrial processing yards nearby.
Taking its design cue from an aging barn that the client had identified as a favorite, the concept seeks to capture the essence of an utilitarian agricultural aesthetic. A simple exposed structure that employs a limited material palette and natural patina, the design merges rural vernacular with an equally spare contemporary aesthetic.
The L-shaped building is nested into the landscape through the use of board-formed concrete site walls and earthen berms that wrap the perimeter to form a central, landscaped courtyard. Soil excavated for foundation work was repurposed for the perimeter berms, eliminating the need to remove it or add more.
A notch through the berm provides access from the parking area to the formal courtyard and building entrance. Crossing the courtyard via a boardwalk, the visitor is embraced by a fully-glazed facade, punctuated by a series of wood columns that march across the building in regular intervals. The boardwalk aligns with an off-set building entry, which is formed as a wood-wrapped passageway inserted into the glazed facade.
The building recalls its agricultural roots by pulling the 18-foot-tall scissored glu-lam structural columns to the outside, revealing the physics of its construction and enabling the 175-foot-long interior volume to be column free. Topped with 68-foot-long exposed truss girders, the interior reaches 20-feet at its peak.
The repetitive nature of the structure ensured easy fabrication and assembly, saving costs and resources. The north-facing courtyard facade is glazed along its length, visually extending the interior space into the courtyard.
Interior light is balanced via a long clerestory dormer on the south, while the extensive use of large, south-facing overhangs and high efficiency glazing limits summer heat gain. Reclaimed barn wood siding and a weathering steel roof round out the exterior materials.
Spartan, daylight-filled interiors are complemented by a warm, simple palette of natural materials. Private offices line the south wall, while conference spaces and back-of-house functions are set in wood-clad boxes. Interior furnishings terminate well below the ceiling.
The open feeling of the structure is reinforced by keeping furnishings low and allowing them to float within the space. Lighting consists of custom-designed uplights, which keep the ceiling plane tidy. A raised flooring system further ensures that the clean aesthetic is preserved and free of cabling. The deep agricultural roots of both the company and location underlie the simple design concept and attention to detail throughout the project.
The sales office is located in the short arm of the L to isolate noise and enhance privacy. Adjacent to the sales office is a separately enclosed structure featuring a 30-foot-long table. The setting provides a place for staff and farmers to gather for communal meals. The exposed structural system connecting the lunch room to the main building creates a small, partially covered courtyard, recalls a remnant of an aging barn.
Views throughout the complex are controlled, whether to the courtyard, the distant hills, or to the shallow private office views created between the building and the berms. Everything is curated to create a peaceful environment in which to work.
