In the wake of the Ford government’s decision to dissolve the Region of Peel, local politicians in Vaughan are pushing the province to give the city its independence from York Region, setting the stage for the next battle over municipal governance in the Greater Toronto Area.
The province is expected to appoint facilitators to review the regions of York, Durham, Halton, Niagara, Simcoe and Waterloo to examine whether the two-tier systems should be dissolved, amalgamated or left intact. It’s part of the government’s push to streamline housing construction approvals in Ontario’s most populous cities.

Had fun down at the grand opening of Gaslight District on Sunday. Sadly had to miss out on the big concerts on Friday & Saturday but at least got to see the Joy Exhibition which did indeed bring me joy. Also caught most of #OaklandStroke's set and they were incredible. That 5-piece horn section was 🔥!

A budget proposal that will be presented to the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board on Wednesday would see the service add 55 more officers over the next three years.
In 2023, the service is asking the board to approve a budget that would see it add 19 new officers in 2023, with 18 more being added in both 2024 and 2025.
The budget proposal does not say what the additional hirings will cost down the road but in 2023 it would be around $4.2 million.
The proposal is asking the board to approve an overall budget increase from around $200 million in 2022 to around $214 million in 2023.
According to the proposal, the 19 officers in 2023 would be in “high demand policing areas, including frontline and victim-focused areas.” [...]
It also says the Crime Severity Index has jumped 34 per cent since 2012, going from 59.19 to 79. The index is published by Statistics Canada and measures changes in police-reported crime and reflects the nature of the severity. [...]

ethel cain, especially her decidedly different visual vibe and disturbing-for-indie-pop lyrical content trending on tiktok, the kim kardashian prairie dress photoshoot going viral, and bones and all bringing romantic cannibalism into the non-tumblr mainstream is inevitably going to lead to an uptick in general interest in specifically pre-20th century vintage/historical fashion as well as southern gothic horror aesthetics, and then, as with any cultural moment that falls prey to the social media microtrend cycle, this will lead to fastfashion-ification, collective misinterpretation, sanitisation and romanticisation of the ‘problematic’ aspects of the style (simultaneously denying their existence, as will inevitably happen in the case of the style’s links to the intrinsic deterioration of white-supremacist imagery, and revelling in the taboo of the juicy forbidden themes of incest and the aforementioned cannibalism) as has been seen before with ‘dark academia’. ‘southern gothic’ and regional gothic more broadly is already on track to becoming a buzzword that encompasses such a wide category of disparate ideas and media that it is rendered essentially meaningless. and then immediately after the trend passes and is declared cringe, a girl wearing a gunne sax dress or someone listening to amigo the devil will be harassed and bullied for not keeping up with whatever the autocannibalistic (lol) capitalist trend machine has moved onto, the next victim of the endless race to build social capital from a clothing haul and a newly minted £20 vinyl for the record player in a fleeting week or two before donating it to oxfam for the losers to pick up
none of this is ethel cain’s fault (i do think her music itself is a bit bland compared to the textual content and visuals she projects but that’s irrelevant) however if chelsea wolfe gets a trending audio on the hell scroll app i might actually throw my phone off waterloo bridge

UNIT 1: Launching into Nature Interpretation
I have had a slightly unorthodox journey to becoming interested in nature, as the concept of studying nature in university has only recently occurred to me. For context, I grew up in the Waterloo Region which is quite a developed urban area; so there was not much opportunity for exploring vast forests or serene lakes. The concept of studying nature in school or even going for a hike wasn't even a thought in my head for the first 19 years of my life. I began university in Biomedical Sciences at a different institution (which was a very intense human-centric program with no biodiversity or environmental biology exposure), but transferred to the University of Guelph during my first year. At UoG, I had to take a required class, BIOL*1070 Discovering Biodiveristy… and boy did I discover biovideristy!
In BIOL*1070, I was lumped in a group with a bunch of biomed kids who HATED the class and just wanted to learn “useful biology,” that’s when I realized I didn't hate the class at all, it was actually my favourite first-year course I had taken! It was the other student’s closed-mindedness that made me realize how important the class was and appreciate the content so much more. I also realized that solely doing biology courses about anatomy, molecular biology, genetics and physiology made me absolutely miserable, and I had this untapped passion for ecology, evolution, environmental biology, and geography. I switched my major to Biological Sciences so I could experience the best of both worlds and have more flexibility to explore this side of biology that I had no exposure to in high school or my first year of university. Unfortunately, I think it is a common experience for students to be pigeonholed toward the medical field and human biology. I am very happy that I was forced to take BIOL*1070, I would never have done it as an elective and I wouldn't be here in ENVS*3000 or have taken half the classes on my transcript.
Additionally, BIOL*1070 also opened doors to new hobbies as I became a frequent hiker and trail runner. In BIOL*1070, we had to go on 5 nature walks for an assignment, which at the time I thought was super annoying and inconvenient but I ended up falling in love with the fresh air and sunshine. Shortly after, I started working full-time in an office and going on daily hikes and runs which absolutely saved my mental and physical health. I am so grateful I discovered this hobby before my work-term because I don't know what I would have done without it! Sitting at a computer in a windowless cubical for 8 hours a day would have driven me insane if I didn't have nature as an outlet. It is hard to believe that just 3 months before my trail obsession I had zero interest in nature. This newfound appreciation for nature has even impacted the vacations I have taken with camping trips and road trips to remote trails. I love exploring Northern Ontario, I am specifically obsessed with Lake Superior.
I thank my professors in BIOL*1070, Dr. Shoshanah Jacobs and Dr. Alex Smith, who made a lasting impression and sparked the nature bug that completely redefined my university experience. These amazing profs opened my eyes to fields of study I have since fallen in love with. I would not have the love of nature I have today with their enthusiasm and delivery of BIOL*1070.
Thanks for reading!! Take care:)
