By EDITH M. LEDERER Updated 9:11 PM PST, March 8, 2024 UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Legal equality for women could take centuries as the fight for gender equality is becoming an uphill struggle against widespread discrimination and gross human human rights abuses, the United Nations chief said on International Women’s Day. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a packed U.N. commemoration Friday that “a global backlash against women’s rights is threatening, and in some cases reversing, progress in developing and developed countries alike.” The most egregious example is in Afghanistan, he said, where the ruling Taliban have barred girls from education beyond sixth grade, from employment outside the home, and from most public spaces, including parks and hair salons. At the current rate of change, legal equality for women could take 300 years to achieve and so could ending child marriage, he said. Guterres pointed to “a persistent epidemic of gender-based violence,” a gender pay gap of at least 20%, and the underrepresentation of women in politics. He cited September’s annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, where just 12% of the speakers were women. “And the global crises we face are hitting women and girls hardest — from poverty and hunger to climate disasters, war and terror,” the secretary-general said. In the past year, Guterres said, there have been testimonies of rape and trafficking in Sudan, and in Gaza women women and children account for a majority of the more than 30,000 Palestinians reported killed in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. He cited a report Monday by the U.N. envoy focusing on sexual violence in conflict that concluded there are “reasonable grounds” to believe Hamas committed rape, “sexualized torture” and other cruel and inhumane treatment of women during its surprise attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7. He also pointed to reports of sexual violence against Palestinians detained by Israel. International Women’s Day grew out of labor movements in North America and across Europe at the turn of the 20th century and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977. This year’s theme is investing in women and girls to accelerate progress toward equality. Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the U.N. political mission in Afghanistan, told the Security Council on Wednesday that what is happening in that country “is precisely the opposite” of investing in women and girls. There is “a deliberate disinvestment that is both harsh and unsustainable,” she said, saying the Taliban’s crackdown on women and girls has caused “immense harm to mental and physical health, and livelihoods.” Recent detentions of women and girls for alleged violations of the Islamic dress code “were a further violation of human rights, and carry enormous stigma for women and girls,” she said. It has had “a chilling effect among the wider female population, many of whom are now afraid to move in public,” she said. Otunbayeva again called on the Taliban to reverse the restrictions, warning that the longer they remain, “the more damage will be done.” Sima Bahous, the head of UN Women, the agency promoting gender equality and women’s rights, told the commemoration that International Women’s Day “sees a world hobbled by confrontation, fragmentation, fear and most of all inequality.” “Poverty has a female face,” she said. “One in every 10 women in the world lives in extreme poverty.” Men not only dominate the halls of power but they “own $105 trillion more wealth than women,” she said. Bahous said well-resourced and powerful opponents of gender equality are pushing back against progress. The opposition is being fueled by anti-gender movements, foes of democracy, restricted civic space and “a breakdown of trust between people and state, and regressive policies and legislation,” she said. China tried to meddle in the last two Canadian elections but the results were not affected and it was “improbable” Beijing preferred any one party over another, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told an official probe.
In sworn testimony on Wednesday before a commission conducting a public inquiry into alleged foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections, Trudeau answered questions about intelligence briefings he had received and asserted the elections were “free and fair”.
The prime minister set up the commission last year under pressure from opposition legislators unhappy about media reports on China’s possible role in the elections. China has consistently denied that it interfered in Canada’s internal affairs, calling the allegations “groundless”.
Erin O’Toole, who led the main opposition Conservative party during the 2021 campaign, has estimated Chinese interference cost his party up to nine seats but added it had not changed the course of the election. Trudeau’s Liberal Party won both the elections.
“Nothing we have seen and heard despite, yes, attempts by foreign states to interfere, those elections held in their integrity. They were decided by Canadians,” Trudeau said. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: Don't fall for this shit. It's a lie meant to distract you from the fact his campaign worked with the fascist BJP to slander and attack Sikhs in the elections wherein he had to go up against Jagmeet Singh. Corrupt bastard. Don't buy into this shameless redscare tactic, China's just his scapegoat here.

Wednesday addams x magic reader?? Lightning control
Strawberry-Flavored
Word Count: 1k
Warnings: Mention of drugs, high af reader, suggestive ending?
Summary: The skies of Nevermore are suddenly unusually active, and Wednesday knows that you're the one behind it
Tumblr media
The nevermore sky was unusually dark when Wednesday stepped outside, dark rumbles of thunder and faint crackling sounds charging the air as the remaining students hurried inside due to the storm.
Where had it come from? Nobody knew, but Wednesday had a sneaking suspicion that you had something to do with it and she was never wrong. You had to be somewhere, and as if to confirm her assumptions she hadn’t seen you for most of the day. The Addams was already on the move, the other students moving out of the way for her as she stormed through the halls, her energy not dissimilar to the thunderous and gloomy sky outside. At least the weather was good. Upon a search of you regular whereabouts you were nowhere to be seen, and that frustrated her, to say the least. There was no natural way that a lightning storm had formed when the sky had been clear mere hours ago; seeing as you were the only student in the school with the ability to control said lightning, all the signs were pointing to you.
Wednesday was exiting the commissary when she was interrupted by Thing, the appendage tapping on the floor before her, causing her to pause her search to listen, with slightly furrowed eyebrows and a small sigh of annoyance. “What is it, Thing?”
A couple more rapid taps made the raven’s eyebrows lift slightly in surprise as she paused before responding, “Y/N? You found them?” Two or more taps and she huffed slightly, hissing. “Yes, I understand that Y/N started the storm, get to the point.”
When the appendage finished his sentence Wednesday had to bite back an annoyed sigh. Why must you be so foolish? Nodding to Thing, she changed directions, already headed for the secret Nightshades library. Of course you were there; maybe she shouldn’t have told you about it when you were going to use it to your own advantage. Or was that admirable-? No. She had to focus,
When Wednesday walked down the spiral staircase she instantly knew Thing’s testimony had been correct; there you were, with Ajax, head hazy with the cloud of smoke surrounding the two of you. It was a miracle that the fire alarms hadn’t gone off yet.
You were clearly stoned out of your mind; Wednesday could tell that your control of your powers had either slipped or you simply didn’t care that you were causing a storm right on top of you. Your eyes had a droopy look, and in your right hand was your smoke, which you were already using to go in for another bump. Without a word, the Addams quickly stepped forward, taking it from your hand and stomping on it, crunching it under the sole of her boot as she watched you look down in surprise.
“What in Lucifier’s name do you think you’re doing?” Wednesday hissed, grabbing your wrist to pull you out of the slight hazy cloud, though she knew that wouldn’t effect your senses anyway,
Ajax also looked slightly startled, and the Addams felt a rush of satisfaction at the sight, pleased that she had at least done something fun today. Turning away from the stoner’s fear, she tightened her grip on your wrist. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing?”
When you opened your mouth to speak Wednesday huffed and shook her head, abruptly cutting you off. “I don’t wish to hear excuses, Y/N. Get a grip on yourself and let’s get you cleaned up.” With Ajax meekly giving a goodbye, she practically dragged you up the staircase, pace brisk and irritated.
The sounds of thunder rumbling and faint flashes of lightning were still present when the Addams pulled you toward her dorm, clearly showing you were still high as a kite, though Wednesday couldn’t deny it was in character for you. With a small frown, she opened her door and pushed you onto her bed, kneeling on the floor to further examine you.
“Look, I was trying, Ajax had some sorta… like… strawberry scented vape and I was only taking a couple bumps-“ you started to speak, speech slightly slurred. “- I’m sorry, it was just-“
Wednesday shut you up quickly by giving the shirt of your collar a small tug, and you let loose a small whine, causing the raven to roll her eyes as she placed a cold hand on your face, examining your dilated pupils. Definitely high.
Sighing, she muttered curses under her breath as she grabbed a small water bottle from under her bed, placing it to your lips and lifting your chin gently to make you drink. The sounds of thunder were starting to fade, luckily for the school, and the Addams glanced outside at the window before feeling a tug at her sleeve, causing her gaze to turn back to you.
“Pay attention.” You whined again, making Wednesday frown slightly. Of course you were acting childish, you always did so when you were high. Grumbling, she knew there wouldn’t be any other way to shut you up other than giving you what you wanted, and she hesitantly and slowly leaned forward, giving you a small forehead kiss in response. She hated the darkness that was becoming present on her face. Why was it that even in your drugged state she found you so… attractive? Was it the fact that somehow you had caused an entire weather mystery, the only cause being you under the influence? Was it the fact that you had so foolishly used the secret library for quite simply the most unimaginative reason possible? It was puzzling why your simple ignorance was so endearing to her.
“I will not tolerate you this kindly next time, Y/N. Do you understand, or are you still unable to comprehend basic sentences?”
Seeing the meek nod from you made her nod, at least somewhat satisfied as she returned the kiss that you offered.
A/N: I'm working on the next part of TSTT, sorry for the wait <3

The documents, obtained exclusively by Al Jazeera via a freedom of information request, do not provide details of the alleged workplace violations or alleged retaliation by Boeing in each case. However, 13 of the complaints were filed under a statute that protects whistleblowing related to aviation safety. Fifteen of the complaints were filed under a statute related to workplace safety, two were filed under the category of fraud, and one related to the control of toxic chemicals. Apart from monetary restitution being awarded in two cases, all of the complaints where an outcome was specified were closed without the agency taking action, according to the figures.
[...]OSHA did not respond to requests for comment. Boeing did not respond to inquiries in time for publication. The revelations come as the public testimony of a number of current and former Boeing employees is refocusing attention on the aircraft manufacturer’s allegedly hostile environment for whistleblowers and lax safety standards. At a US Senate committee hearing on Wednesday, Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour testified that he had been threatened for raising concerns about gaps between key sections of the 787 Dreamliner.
"They are putting out defective airplanes,” Salephour said. “I have serious concerns about the safety of the 787 and 777 aircraft, and I’m willing to take on professional risk to talk about them.” Another witness, Ed Pierson, a former Boeing engineer, accused the company of a “criminal cover-up” in the investigation of the midair blowout of a Boeing 737 Max 9 in January that prompted regulators to put a cap on the manufacturer’s production.

before this goes any further, I want it on the record that you all asked for this.
my first and most petty point: Midnight Mass gets basic details about Catholicism wrong, such that even I (not a Catholic) twigged them. The big one is that Catholics DON'T HAVE MIDNIGHT MASS FOR EASTER - it's a Christmas thing - but since the priest holding the mass is also a vampire, I can accept that he's going off-book. I have a harder time with them holding a PICNIC for ASH WEDNESDAY, aka THE DAY LENT STARTS, aka the day everyone starts fasting and are therefore not snacking on a potluck. It's a minor thing, and normally I wouldn't pick at it, but since this show ostensibly revolves around Catholic doctrine, it bears mentioning.
on a writing level, not one single character in this show talks like a human being. or acts like one. I couldn't give you any information about who these characters are as people, because they're not people, they're mouthpieces for Flanagan to impart his ideas to the audience. He is both deeply in love with his own writing and entirely unconvinced that his audience is smart enough to Get It, so he has his actors turn to the audience and lay it all out. Not only is this bad writing on a character level, it brings all plot and tension to a screeching halt whenever it happens. The most unintentionally hilarious instance of this has to be when Annabeth Gish comes to the sheriff to tell him that the church is being run by a vampire and her mother is aging in reverse, and his response is to start rambling about where he was on 9/11. Like. Nothing about this makes sense, and also why should we care when it has fuckall to do with the story?
(as regards the sheriff character: I, a white Quaker, am not the person to critique this show's handling of Islam. But I will say that Flanagan doesn't seem to have a clear idea what he wants to communicate: the overarching plot is antitheistic, in a very r/atheism sort of way ("WHAT IF THE SACRAMENT WAS VAMPIRE BLOOD" ooh wow didja cut yourself on that edge there, buddy) but Flanagan has no idea how to balance that with the precepts of any religion that isn't Christianity while also maintaining his broadly liberal bona fides, so it all sits very uneasily next to the church plot. I'm not advocating for the show to go full Christopher Hitchens, but I am saying that if Flanagan wants to posit that faith is a mass delusion and a net detriment to any community formed around it . . . he needs to either focus only on Christian characters or be willing to engage with how other religions function in society, because as is, the storyline with the sheriff and his son just peters out into nothing.)
but the thing that made me angriest - that took me from "this is so boring and pretentious and badly written" to "oh FUCK this guy and the horse he rode in on -" was the titular midnight mass. It is very overtly inspired by the Jonestown massacre, which a lot of horror media does, but what it fails to account for is that the members of the People's Temple did not voluntarily kill themselves. I know "drink the kool-aid" has entered the popular lexicon as shorthand for "blindly following a leader," but extensive testimony from Jonestown survivors - not to mention the death tape, which is available online if you really want to ruin your day - all confirms that the people who died that day were forced to drink poison at gunpoint, after years of brutal abuse from Jones and his inner circle. And even after all of that, people fought back. And not outsiders - people who had been in the Temple for years and wholeheartedly believed in the mission that had lead them to Guyana in the first place. (Christine Miller was a fucking hero and she deserves to be remembered for it.) Jonestown was not lemmings going off a cliff, and any serious take on the story would involve reckoning with that - that these people believed in a higher power and also believed that they had a right to live despite what Jones told them. But that would contradict Flanagan's point of "religion is dumb, WAKE UP SHEEPLE," so instead he borrows the iconography of a truly horrific tragedy and disrespects the victims by implicitly representing them as dumb, brainwashed cult members who eagerly toss back poison because they think sky daddy wants them to. He has so little respect for the subjects he's portraying, and the real people whose deaths he is copying for shock value, that he doesn't care about the inner lives of anyone whose beliefs might demonstrate that faith is more nuanced than his screed would have you believe.
There are good horror properties out there that are critical of religion and society - The Medium, which we posted about a few days ago, is one. The Witch is another. So is The Sudbury Devil. Hell, you could go back to the sixties with Witchfinder General. Religion - especially socially dominant religions like Christianity in the west - can and should be critiqued. But Midnight Mass is too sloppily written to be a critique of anything besides, accidentally, how far Mike Flanagan's head is shoved up his ass.
Anyway, that's why mod L doesn't like Midnight Mass. I did warn you.

Tony Bobulinski:
Joe Biden Was ‘the Brand’
Excerpts from the written testimony of Hunter Biden’s business partner.
These are excerpts from the written testimony of Tony Bobulinski, a former business partner of Hunter Biden, submitted to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee Tuesday. Mr. Bobulinski is scheduled to testify before the committee Wednesday. Joe, Hunter and Jim Biden have disputed some of Mr. Bobulinski’s allegations.
I want to be crystal clear: From my direct personal experience and what I have subsequently come to learn, it is clear to me that Joe Biden was “the Brand” being sold by the Biden family. His family’s foreign influence peddling operation—from China to Ukraine and elsewhere—sold out to foreign actors who were seeking to gain influence and access to Joe Biden and the United States government.
Joe Biden was more than a participant in and beneficiary of his family’s business; he was an active, aware enabler who met with business associates such as myself to further the business, despite being buffered by a complex scheme to maintain plausible deniability.
If there is no evidence of corruption—if Joe’s conduct and the conduct of his family were fully legal and proper—then why are they so dishonest about it? Not just slight misrepresentations of fact but deep untruths about the entire corrupt enterprise.
Hunter Biden gave his transcribed interview to the House Oversight Committee on February 28 and lied throughout his testimony. Here are just three key examples of his perjury:
1. In Hunter’s transcript (Page 42), he states, “I officially began to do work for CEFC when the—when I received a retainer from CEFC in early—or spring of 2017.”
Why, then, did Hunter yell at CEFC Executive Director Zang in front of his entourage as I sat right next to him in New York City on Sunday May 7th, 2017? Hunter was adamant that he was owed the rest of the $20 Million CEFC had committed to paying for the work he had claimed he had done in prior years.
2. On Page 48 of his transcript, Hunter is asked, “He’s never interacted with any of your business associates. Is that correct?” The “He’s” is a reference to Joe Biden.
Hunter responds, “Yes.”
Hunter arranged the meeting between his father and me at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on May 2, 2017. The sole reason Hunter wanted me to meet his father was because I was the CEO of Sinohawk, the Bidens’ partnership with CEFC. I was a business associate. In his transcript, Hunter confirms that that meeting with Joe took place and incriminates his Uncle Jim for perjury by confirming it.
3. Hunter also lied to the Committee about important details concerning his money demands and threats to CEFC on July 30 and July 31, 2017. He leveraged his father’s presence next to him in that infamous text in order to strong-arm CEFC into paying Hunter immediately, and in the process defrauded the partners of Sinohawk Holdings LLC and Oneida Holdings LLC. The threat worked, as a few days later the Chinese wired $5 million dollars into a company of which Hunter owned 50%. It’s important to remember that the CEFC considered this money an interest-free loan to the “Biden family,” and planned to send more. I have the email from CEFC to prove it.
Jim Biden also lied extensively throughout his transcribed interview before the Oversight Committee on February 21, and ironically, Hunter Biden—in his own testimony as outlined above—confirmed that Jim Biden perjured himself:
1. Jim has been selling “plausible deniability” for so many years he can’t tell truth from the lies. On Page 100 of his transcript, he is asked: “Do you recall having a meeting with Hunter Biden, and Tony Bobulinski and Joe Biden?”
Jim’s response: “Absolutely not.”
The Committee was so shocked by his perjury they tried to ask the question again in a slightly different way:
“It’s your testimony here today that meeting never took place?”
Jim responds, “Yes sir,” “that I was present for.”
The Committee tried again: “Do you recall whether you were at the bar with Hunter Biden, Tony Bobulinski and Joe Biden?”
Jim responds: “That I know did not happen.”
Jim adds further, “But my brother was never there.”
On Page 134, delusional Jim Biden reiterates his untruthful answer again after the Committee showed him messages confirming I met with Joe Biden.
Jim Biden states, “Joe Biden never met with Tony Bobulinski.”
That is just a flat-out lie.
2. On Page 124 of his transcript, Jim Biden states, “It was Hunter Biden, myself, Gilliar. I don’t know. It was the five. Okay? And everybody was 20 percent. Okay? You know what was never executed. It was never signed.”
Jim was then presented with a fully executed copy of the Oneida Holdings operating agreement that he and I had both signed along with Hunter Biden, Mr. James Gilliar and Mr. Robert Walker. On Page 132, Jim tries to claim he was not a member of Oneida Holdings.
Jim is so dedicated to his lies that he describes the Oneida document, a large legal document signed by the Biden business partners, as something that I might have come up with after drinking a “quart of gin” (Page 124). It’s absurd.
3. Jim Biden further lies by claiming “Bobulinski was trying to usurp and replace Hunter Biden.” (Page 123)
Hunter Biden, Robert Walker, James Gilliar and Jim Biden asked me to step in as CEO of the business. I did not ask them. I tried to walk away from Sinohawk multiple times only to be convinced to stay on, including on one occasion by Jim Biden himself. The company was controlled by a Board of which the 4 of them could out-vote me on anything. They had control of the company. . . .
Why is Joe Biden blatantly lying to the American people? . . . If he were doing nothing wrong, why go through this insane exercise of obstructing and denying obvious facts? . . .
The reason is because the Biden family’s profiting of tens of millions of dollars from our strategic opponents and corrupt individuals and entities around the world—without delivering any goods or services and while putting in minimal effort and work—causes Americans to rightly question any policies from this administration that apparently benefit those same strategic opponents and corrupt individuals and entities. Just read the latest motion by the Department of Justice related to Hunter Biden’s criminal indictments in California; the DOJ states that he made large sums of money for very little work.

"He was really the best eyewitness that they found," David T. Beito, a historian at the University of Alabama who has written about the Till case, said Wednesday. "I don't want to diminish the role played by the other witnesses, but his act in some sense was the bravest act of them all. He had nothing to gain: he had no family ties to Emmett Till; he didn't know him. He was this 18-year-old kid who goes into this very hostile atmosphere."
The trial opened September 19, 1955. On September 23, the all-white jury, after deliberating for 67 minutes, acquitted both defendants.
Mr. Reed's testimony, Professor Beito said, was no less valuable for that.
"The prosecution - and this is not emphasized enough - was arguing a conspiracy case," he said. "They were arguing that more than two people were involved in the crime, that it wasn't just Milam and Bryant. And Reed's testimony was that it was a crowded pickup."
The other white men in the truck were believed to be cronies of Mr. Milam and Mr. Bryant, the black men employees of Mr. Milam who were forced to take part in the crime. None of the other men, black or white, was ever charged.
With the aid of T.R.M. Howard, a prominent local black doctor and civil rights advocate, Willie Reed was sent to Chicago, where he was given round-the-clock police protection at first. But the terrors of the crime and trial overtook him, and he was hospitalized with a nervous breakdown.
For years during their marriage, Mr. Louis suffered from nightmares, Juliet Louis told The Associated Press.
J.W. Milam died in 1980, Roy Bryant in 1994. In a 1956 article in Look magazine for which they were paid, the two men admitted to having murdered Till.

University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill has issued a groveling apology for her refusal to condemn calls for the genocide of the Jewish people on campus in her remarks to Congress — as Harvard University President Pauline Gay backtracked on her testimony.
In a video posted on the Ivy League’s website Wednesday, Magill tried to explain her failure by saying she was not “focused” on the issue, and said that she wanted to “be clear” that calls for genocide were “evil, plain and simple.”
But she also seemingly blamed university policies and even the US Constitution for allowing the calls to be made on campus.
“There was a moment during yesterday’s Congressional hearing on antisemitism when I was asked if a call for the genocide of Jewish people on our campus would violate our policies,” Magill began the two-minute-long video.
“In that moment, I was focused on the university’s long-standing policies — aligned with the US Constitution — which say that speech alone is not punishable.
“I was not focused on — but should have been — the irrefutable fact that a call for genocide of Jewish people is a call for some of the most terrible violence human beings can perpetrate.
“It’s evil, plain and simple,” she said.
University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill issued a groveling apology for her failure to condemn calls for genocide against the Jewish people on Wednesday. Penn/X
Magill then went on to say she hoped to clarify her position.
“I want to be clear: a call for genocide of Jewish people is threatening, deeply so,” she said.
“It is intentionally meant to terrify a people who have been subjected to pogroms and hated for centuries, and were the victims of mass genocide in the Holocaust.
“In my view, it would be harassment or intimidation.”
But these calls for violence were not classified as harassment under university policy, Magill said, as she vowed to review and update the existing rules.
“For decades under multiple Penn presidents and consistent with most universities, Penn’s policies have been guided by the Constitution and the law,” she said.

“In today’s world, where we are seeing signs of hatred proliferating across our campus and our world in a way not seen in years, these policies need to be clarified and evaluated. Penn must initiate a serious and careful look at our policies.”
Magill concluded by saying she was “committed to a safe, secure and supportive environment so all members of our community thrive.
“We can, and we will, get it right,” she said.
But New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik slammed the video as a “pathetic cleanup attempt” that “took over 24 hours to try to fix the moral depravity of the answers under oath yesterday.
“And there was not even an apology,” Stefanik wrote in a post on X.
“By the way, the questions were asked over and over and over again,” she said, adding: “No statement will fix what the world saw and heard yesterday.
“There is zero question that the world knows that the only answer is for [UPenn] to deliver accountability and bring in new leadership immediately,” Stefanik claimed.
Magill’s apology video came the same day Harvard President Pauline Gay backtracked on her own testimony to Congress by saying the university will start to punish calls for genocide.
“There are some who have confused a right to free expression with the idea that Harvard will condone calls for violence against Jewish students,” Gay said in a statement on Harvard’s official X account Wednesday.
She appeared at the hearing along with Harvard President Pauline Gay and President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sally Kornbluth. Getty Images
“Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic group are vile, they have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account.”
Both the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard have come under fire in recent months for their failure to condemn the growing antisemitism on campus following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
Many major donors to the universities have now divested from the schools over their stances, and Magill and Gay’s testimonies on Tuesday have even drawn criticism from the White House.
“It’s unbelievable that this needs to be said: calls for genocide are monstrous and antithetical to everything we represent as a country,” senior communications adviser and deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement.

Audio Drama Recommendations, Pt. II
Tumblr media
For part one, click here. I went on another audio drama binge and I found some that were pretty fun to listen to. I usually tend to go after the ones that are completed because the longer the wait, the more likely I will forget the details, but this time I just went for anything that caught my attention. This also isn’t in any particular order.
The Magnus Archives – is a horror fiction anthology podcast written by Jonathan Sims, directed by Alexander J. Newall, and distributed by Rusty Quill.
The new Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, Jonathan Sims, attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of people’s testimonials of their encounters with the supernatural up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team. [COMPLETED]
It has five seasons, each 40 episodes long, as well as additional content such as Q&As, non-canon fan-submitted statements and one-off episodes that tie in with Rusty Quill's other podcasts.
It does start out slow and maybe at some point you’ll be wondering where is this going and what does some of these episodes have to do with the overall story, but it does all eventually connect. Your patience will pay off because once the build-up is done it picks up and things get really interesting!
Unwell – is a horror podcast starring Clarisa Cherie Rios and produced by Hartlife NFP.
The story follows Lillian Harper who has returned home to Mt. Absalom, Ohio to care for her estranged mother Dorothy after an injury. Living in the town's boarding house which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers conspiracies, ghosts, and a new family in the house's strange assortment of residents. [ONGOING]
This audio drama has five seasons which runs for 12 episodes. It currently has 54 episodes in total and each one is about 20-30 minutes long. New episodes are released fortnightly (biweekly) on Wednesdays. They take a mid-season break between episodes 6 and 7.
Bridgewater – is a supernatural thriller audio drama produced by Grim & Mild and by iHeartRadio, created by Aaron Mahnke and written/directed by Lauren Shippen.
Folklore professor Jeremy Bradshaw is pulled into the mysterious 1980 disappearance of his police officer father, Thomas, by new evidence that threatens to upend decades of certainty. Along the way, he’s helped by some unlikely partners who challenge everything he believes in, and ultimately tries to answer the question: can the past actually be rewritten?
Together with his father’s former partner, retired Detective Anne Becker, Jeremy must chase the clues that will tell him whether his father really did fall victim to a Satanic cult in the Bridgewater Triangle—or something much more dark and unexplainable. [ONGOING]
It has two seasons, the first consist of 10 episodes and the second has 12 episodes. Each one runs about 20-30 minutes long. Season three was put on hold when there was news of a possible television series. However, that fell through and by then everyone was working on other projects. So a season three, well, that’s pretty much up in the air.

Every day Midnight Burger appears somewhere new in the cosmos along with its staff: a galactic drifter, a rogue theoretical physicist, a sentient old-timey radio, and some guy named Caspar.

The year is 1955. Tinsel town. The land of make-believe. It's a time of growth in American prosperity. Especially in Los Angeles. Here, dreams are bought and sold.
But there's a seedier side to the City of Angels, the shadows where pimps and narcotics pushers live, where organized crime stands just around every corner with one hand out, and the other wrapped around a roscoe. It's a city full of fancy dames and slick cons, where bookies know the vig, so you better, too.
Some folks call it noir or pulp fiction. But for a private eye named Rex Rivetter, it's home. [ONGOING]
It has four seasons and each one runs about 20-30 minutes long. Due to the pandemic, it is still unknown if season five will ever come out and so far there hasn’t been any news about it either.

So far it only has one season, which contains nine hilarious episodes, each three-chapter story finds Dorinda wrapped up in a new murder. With the help of her devoted daughter, Stacey—as well as the occasional frenemy—Dorinda digs for clues, navigates Berkshire Bay’s elite social circles, and sifts through years’ worth of grudges and motives. Whether at the Labor Day Extravaganza, the Halloween Tennis Club Open, or secret karaoke night, Dorinda sets out to find the real killer before they get away with murder… Just as soon as she orders her martini! [COMPLETED]

Virtue
Bobby Nash x Reader
Warnings: 18+ do not read if you are a minor.
Summary: you are done being friends with benefits.
The noises the neighbors must have heard a couple of minutes before should have made you feel embarrassed. When you first started sleeping with your captain the both of you agreed strictly to let go of some steam. A secret. You were his dirty little secret. You agreed with it because you had been pining for him for months. His charisma, his ability to have snarky remarks towards completely incapable people on the job. His eyes were filled with pain, and hurt. While he put on a smile, and spent time with his found family. You knew why he was just screwing your brains out instead of taking you out on dates. Athena left him in shambles, and now the honorable captain was screwing the rookie. He wouldn’t be able to face the team if he did. You stare at his ceiling while you let your thoughts infiltrate your mind. You knew you should get up, take your clothes and leave. “Your neighbors must hate us.” You chuckle as you get up from the bed, you didn’t bother covering up, hoping he’d look up from his phone and see you and beg you to stay. “Well, next time I will have to take it easy on you then.” He said, you look at him, and he was looking at you for a response. You just stick out your tongue as you throw on his shirt.
You get home from Bobby’s house late, and you had a shift early in the morning. You saw the hickey Bobby left on the base of your throat. It wasn’t even red anymore, it was turning purple. You signed, you once heard Hen say that she thought Bobby drank respecting women juice in the morning. The thoughts of that joke lingered through your mind as you crawled into your own bed, still wearing the captain’s shirt. He might miss his LAFD shirt. however, as long as he was not asking for it back you weren’t going to remind him who has it. You heard your phone buzz, as you reached for it. A text from a detective you met when you gave s testimony about a case at court last week. Want to have dinner with me friday? Detective Greg Howard, he was good looking with broad shoulders. You answered back agreeing to it. Not like Bobby and you were exclusive. He almost immediately texted back. Great, I’ll pick you up at 7. You read the words. You were on shift till 6:30, and you wouldn’t have time to get home. You told him to just swing by the station to pick you up.
The days from Tuesday evening till Friday felt long. Starting from Wednesday evening you were on duty, and starting from that it felt extremely long. Just looking forward to the weekend. Bobby and you had the unspoken rule where you would flirt with him and he would ignore it. Everyone wrote you off as being flirty because of your playful personality. You were flirty with everyone, Hen would get noticeably flustered whenever you made a flirty comment. “Anyone want to go out tonight?” Buck asked when all of you were on the way to an emergency call. The sirens blaring in the background. The others were chattering in the background about how Buck needed to shut up, and that after a 72 hour shift nobody wanted to spend any more time with Buck. “Y/n?” Buck asked seeing as you were the only person who hadn’t responded. “Oh no, I’ve got a date.” You said, you looked over to the front to see Bobby’s reaction. There was none however. “Come on, afterwards we’ll hit the club?” Buck asked. You were hesitant. “Buck, what makes you think her date will end after dinner?” Eddie teased him. The others laughed. “Actually I bet 50 dollars that Y/n won’t go to the club with you.” He said, this erupted chatter from everyone betting money on how well they expect your date to go. “You shouldn’t go betting on a woman’s virtue.” Bobby said, resulting in the others being shut up. “I bet 20 dollars on getting laid tonight boys.” You said, mainly you just said it to piss off Bobby. You were outraged at him saying something about your virtue when he was the one fucking you whenever he wanted. The others laughed at you. Bobby clearly wasn’t. “Well, can’t see how we can’t both be right.” Buck flirted. Referring to the money he betted on you joining him tonight at the club. You were cut off before you could say anything to Buck as you arrived at the scene.
The call ran late, and you quickly showered, and got ready. Your mind went hauled over the thoughts of Bobby being mad at you, even if he didn’t say anything specifically you could tell his demeanor changed. Guess he didn’t like you making that joke. You shouldn’t care, you don’t care what he thinks of this. “You’re looking nice.” Hen said, stepping into the dressing room. “You’re not gone yet?” You asked. She shook her head. “You know if it bothers you. Just say so and we won’t make jokes about your love life.” She said, after a moment of hesitation. “It’s all good, Bobby just got on my nerves.” You said, Hen adjusted her glasses. “Bobby was the problem?” She asked, visibly confused. You shrug as you adjust your short cocktail dress. “It looks nice, very sexy.” She said, You look in the small mirror above the sink. “ All for you, hot mama.” You said, turning around, giving her a smile. She chuckled. “I wanted to look not slutty for the dinner but slutty enough to hit the club afterwards.” You tell her. She nods. “One thing is for certain, you’ll definitely get some tonight.” She hummed. That’s what you were hoping for. You walk out of the dressing room, and decide to quickly get something from the kitchen area really quickly. Bobby was standing by the kitchen island pouring himself a cup of coffee. “You’re still here.” You said, he nodded. “You look gorgeous.” He said, he had a certain look on his face. A mix between stoic, and the face he made before he’d kiss you. You stepped closer, taking his mug from his hand, raising it to your lips, taking a sip. “Don’t go.” He said, you looked at him. You had been hoping for a while he’d ask you to stay. All the late nights at his apartment. “So it is okay for you to ruin my virtue but can’t let anyone else touch me?” You asked, your tone stern. You weren’t going to give him the satisfaction. The word virtue were like poison in your mouth. “Okay, I shouldn’t have said that.” He said, you nod. You put his mug down in front of him. “You know when we started sleeping together I hoped we’d become more.” You said: “but it’s clear you don’t want that.” He didn’t look at you directly. He just stared at your hands. It was clear he was trying to formulate what he wanted to say. But, you heard your name being called from down the stairs. “Well, Captain unless you have something to say to me I’d better get going.” You said you didn’t give him time to respond, almost running down the stairs. You were greeted by Greg who looked nice in a casual button up, and blazer. “Hi, you look amazing.” He said, you thank him as you walk out with him.
Greg was nice, he took you to a nice restaurant, and got an entire bottle of nice wine for just the two of you. Conversation flowed between the two of you, as the two of you were swapping stories. After dinner he brought you home, and you were about to invite him in when he kissed you. It took you by surprise. You follow his lips movement. “I’m sorry.” He apologized when he was catching his breath. You give him a smile. Instead of saying anything you press your lips against his again. Kissing Greg was new and enticing. Nothing like Bobby at all. You had to take charge here, arguing with yourself as you missed the taste of peaches. You broke off the kiss realizing that you didn’t want to invite him in tonight. You hurried up inside of your apartment complex. You check your phone for the first time since the start of your date. You didn’t think Bobby would have sent you something. But, the wave of disappointment hit immediately when you saw he didn’t text anything. You saw the dozen texts Buck sent asking you to join him and some of the others from the team. It was only ten thirty right now, you open the door again, and walk out trying to flag down a taxi.
When you finally got to the bar Buck had sent you the address of. Chimney, Eddie, Hen, Buck and Bobby were sitting at a corner table. Beer bottles and multiple shot glasses covered the table. “Oh my god, y/n you’re here” Chimney cheered when he saw you. You sat down next to Buck who quickly put his arm over your shoulder to whisper something in your ear. “Bobby has been in a mood.” He slurred. You take one of the shots in front of Buck, and down it. Letting the burning sensation trickle down your throat. You didn’t realize what a bad choice of alcohol Buck made, and you desperately needed a chaser. You take the Coke in front of Bobby and take a big gulp. “Jezus Buck what was in that.” You hissed. The others were laughing about a joke made by Bobby about your inability to just drink alcohol. “So Y/n, your attendance means you did not get lucky?” Eddie asked. You shook your head. “Well, the night is still young.” Hen interrupted. It wasn’t clear to you what she bet on but now you knew. You let out a laugh. “Want to double it then?” Eddie said, Hen looked towards you. Then she looked over from Buck, and then to Bobby. “I’ll take that action.” Hen said, grabbing some money from her pocket and putting it on the table. “A Ben Franklin?” You gasped as your eyes widened. “You just love losing money huh, Hen.” Chim said: “ I’ll go against it.” You were starting to feel uncomfortable. “I’m getting another drink.” You said, pulling Buck off his seat to help you carry more drinks. You move across the dance floor. “So what did you bet on?” You ask him, as you lean on the bar waiting to be served. “That you don’t have sex.” He said, you laugh. “I was counting on you to help me win.” You whined. He chuckled, he really was one of your best friends. “I thought the same. Until I noticed how Bobby has been depressed since he heard you went out on a date.” He said, you look over at the table to see Bobby chuckling about something Chim said.
When you go to the bathroom a while later you didn’t realize you were followed in. “I want to explain.” he said, you continued washing your hands while he locked the door behind him. “Well, I don’t want to listen.” You murmured. You refused the urge to look up at him. “John said I’d lose you like weeks ago.” he said: “ and I still let it happen.” John was his friend from AA. He didn’t attend daily anymore but still kept in touch, sometimes he’d tell you things you weren’t sure he told anyone else. He stood close enough now. You could feel his breath on your exposed back. You look up, looking him in the eyes through the mirror. “ He also said I need to stop punishing myself by sleeping with you.” He said, you turn around, he stepped back to give you more room. “So now sleeping with me is a punishment?” You ask him. He got visibly annoyed by how difficult you were being. “I am always seeking atonement for my sins.” You were going to speak, asking him what the hell that had to do with you, he got to it first. “I couldn’t resist you, and I knew it was wrong, you're younger, and i’m your captain.” He said, your expression changed, it got just a little softer and you couldn’t let that happen. “So I'm just a young piece of ass then. Great” you said sarcastically. The look on his face said he was just about to shut you up. “Stop being a brat.” He snapped. You looked furious. “Let me make things easy for you. I'm leaving.” You said, trying to push past him. He pushed you against the wall instead. You loved it when he was taking charge; it came so naturally to him. He pressed his lips against yours, the two of you let passion take over. You moaned softly as his fingers found their way to your dress straps, letting the straps fall down your arms. You knew you shouldn't give in, but the feel of his lips on yours reminded you of peaches. The dress was bunching at your waist, he looked at your breasts as you were not wearing a bra. “God, you’re gorgeous.” He said as he touched your sensitive breasts. A moan escaped your mouth, as he peppered kisses along your neck.
You could see the desire in his eyes, and it only made you want him more. He smiled as he had your right where he wanted you, moving his hand from your breast to under your dress, moving your panty to the side as he started touching your clit. You nestled your face in his blouse to hide the moan you let out. You had your arms around his neck, however you moved them to his belt to help him out of it. “I need your cock, please.” You whined, the tension already getting too much from him playing with your clit. “I need you too. But, listen. Are you listening?” he asked, applying a little more pressure. He started adding two fingers inside you. You moan as a response. “I don’t allow myself to love anything.” he said: “haven’t for years. I thought if I allowed myself to fuck you but not love you. I was seeking atonement.” You nodded. It was hard to pay attention when he was touching you like that. You whimpered his name as you started to cum around his fingers. The grip you had around his shoulders tightened. “I love this.” he said, you wish you had the energy to argue with him. Instead he loosened his belt and pulled down his pants and underwear to expose his cock. “I love it when you are so cock hungry that you’ll do anything for me.” He said, he picked you up, pushing you against the wall as he inserted his cock inside of you he gasped at the tight feeling. You let out a moan still sensitive from your previous orgasm. “ The others are going to wonder” you said, he started moving. The two of you tried to keep quiet. He held your chin tightly. “Don’t think of the others when my cock is inside you.” he warned. It turned you on when he gave orders like that. He noticed that you liked it. “You always get turned on when I give orders?” he asked. When you said something completely inaudible. He started playing with your nipple. While he repeated the motion of fucking you. “Be a good girl and answer.” he said, you nodded. “yes” you moan. He pressed his lips against yours, as he entered his tongue into yours. He started to become sloppy signifying he was about to cum. “I’m gonna cum. Please just let me cum” you asked him. Your ask made him pick up his pace a little and quickly you felt your wall tighten around his cock, as you moaned his name repeatedly till you felt your legs tremble. The tightening of your walls caused him to cum inside you. He didn’t pull out of you immediately instead he was trying to catch his breath while holding you up. He carefully pulls out and sets you down on the ground. He was making himself decent. While you pull the straps over your shoulders again. You looked in the mirror, and it clearly looks like you’ve had sex. You tried to fix your hair by raking your fingers through it.
After cleaning yourself up a little, you and Bobby made your way back to the table with the others. The team started loudly cheering when the two of you sat down receiving stares from others who were enjoying their evening. “ What the fuck?” Eddie said he was so certain he was going to win that bet. Bobby noticed Buck was going to open his mouth but he was quicker. “One remark about my age and I will punch you.” Bobby told him. It didn’t stop Buck from saying something stupid. “I was just going to ask if she gets special treatment, old man.” Buck asked. Bobby punched Buck in the arm. This time Bobby placed his arm protectively over your shoulder. You leaned into him, as you overlooked some very sore losers throwing money on the table from their lost bet.

The Federal Trade Commission sued Amazon on Wednesday, alleging that the e-commerce giant has tricked millions of consumers into signing up for its Prime subscription service through deceptive user interface designs. The complaint filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington also takes aim at Amazon for allegedly trying to keep users subscribed who wished to cancel their memberships. “Specifically, Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions,” the FTC complaint said. It added that Amazon deliberately made it much harder to cancel subscriptions than to enroll in Prime, alleging that the company created a “labyrinthine” cancellation process intended to distract or deter consumers from following through on their intent. The lawsuit marks the FTC’s most significant step yet against business practices the agency says harms consumers by either luring them in or keeping them trapped using psychological gimmicks. It represents the culmination of a months-long investigation into Amazon’s Prime practices that involved testimony from company founder Jeff Bezos and CEO Andy Jassy.

« Let me tell you why nobody wants to talk to y’all behind closed doors. Because y'all lie. »
— Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX-30) making an observation about her Republican colleagues at the Hunter Biden hearings on Wednesday. Via ABC News.
Hunter Biden showed up at the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday. He's willing to testify publicly but Republicans want his testimony behind closed doors so they can make shit up.
The GOP majority wants to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for not falling into their trap. Despite his presence right in front of them they claim he's not complying with a subpoena. However a slew of House Republicans failed to comply with subpoenas by the House January 6th Committee in 2022. Hypocrisy is nothing new for the MAGA GOP.
Republicans have little interest in governance or lawmaking. To them, holding office is just an opportunity to conduct culture wars and try to install their orange dictator back in the White House. They have completely abandoned any semblance of adherence to the rule of law.
The Lincoln Project put together a vid of Democrats calling out Republicans on the House Oversight Committee.
