In 1991, the police in Los Angeles were caught on video brutally beating a Black man, Rodney King, after a traffic stop. 30 years ago, on April 29, 1992, people in LA rose up in a beautiful, righteous rebellion when these pigs were acquitted. Earlier this month, police in Grand Rapids, Michigan killed an unarmed Black man, Patrick Lyoya, after a traffic stop. Protest after protest, even heroic rebellion—yet the system’s oppression goes on and on... and is being geared up for something even worse. Reforms cannot stop it. Protest and rebellion are absolutely needed, but on their own they don’t go far enough.
30 years after the heroic 1992 LA Rebellion, the revcoms say: WE REFUSE TO ACCEPT THEIR FUTURE, WE ARE GETTING ORGANIZED FOR A REAL REVOLUTION
Get with the revcoms on May 1, 2022, 2 pm at corner of Wilshire & Alvarado near Westlake/MacArthur Park Metro Red Line station

Fanfic research!
So... for my fanfic, I have fallen off the deep-end and have looked into historical locations, ‘90s lingo, and even trends. In my quest for historical semi-accuracy, I looked into the location for the Singles Premiere Party, which is about 20 minutes away from me. I’ve passed it numerous times, and never knew!
It’s the MacArthur, previously known as the Park Plaza Hotel. It is located in the Westlake/MacArthur Park area in Los Angeles, which is about 10 minutes from Downtown LA.
This place is absolutely stunning! Built in 1925, it is a wonderful example of art deco architecture, similar to Union Station and the LA Central Library. I’ve always love the art deco buildings here in LA.
I love the Speakeasy vibe it gives, and the inscription on the outside of the building. In my opinion, locations always play a great deal into storytelling, and I always love to note surroundings.
Sadly, the MacArthur has been closed for years. The website says it will reopen in 2023, but no date has been given.
It was a major filming location, and also a pretty popular wedding venue.
Sadly, most high-profile movie premieres don’t really occur in this area nowadays.
I believe the party was held in the Elks Hall (last photo). It’s evident that some renovations were made.

WESTLAKE/MACARTHUR PARK IS THE PEOPLE'S PARK IN L.A.
Allegra Padilla is the Executive Director of the Levitt Pavilion, which has hosted concerts at MacArthur Park in the Westlake area for sixteen years. During our chat, we talk about Allegra’s journey from South Pasadena to organizing on the streets of Los Angeles, including for Mumia Abu-Jamal and the South Central Farm; we also discuss how her Levitt Pavilion Summer Concert series isn’t just for…

Venice Beach - Los Angeles/CA 🇺🇸 Sofia Chudzik Bauer | IG: @sofiacbauer

E quanto a sair do Faroeste?
Ambos me ensinaram e me transformaram de maneiras únicas.

Sometimes, I deeply miss Los Angeles, but not the touristy and obvious LA that everyone knows. It's my LA, the one that feels true to me, the LA that captivated me and made me feel alive. Oh, how I love Los Angeles!
This city has such a peculiar contrast, where chaos and drugs mix with the beauty of its architecture and the daily lives of people. It's the city of dreams, where dreams can be realized or shattered, where imagination and reality coexist, and it's up to each one of us to deal with it, to either propel ourselves forward or bravely resist.
My LA doesn't belong to Hollywood, nor to Malibu, not even to Venice Beach like in this photo. My LA is Downtown LA, Pico Union, KoreaTown, MacArthur Park, Westlake, EchoPark. It's the LA where you hear more "Buenos Dias" than "Good Morning", where you can find homeless people and drug users, but also discover hidden gems like the Apple Theater, Union Station, Target, and Nordstorm Rack at 7th and Figueroa. My LA is about the vendors at MacArthur Park, the authentic Mexican restaurants on Pico Blvd, the Trader Joe's at USC, the random bike rides at 1 in the morning with Tyler, and even the raves in the dangerous warehouses between Skid Row and Financial District.
I love being in San Dimas, in the Far West, but I miss all these details that made LA my LA so much. It's an emotional attachment that makes me feel part of this wonderful and chaotic city, where I met incredible people who I carry in my heart.
You might be wondering if I would move back to LA. The answer is yes, maybe when I'm wealthier. And leaving the Far West? No, the Far West still has much to show me and teach me, just like LA did and continues to do.
Such longing! But everything has its time and place, and who knows what the future holds? More adventures in LA or in the Far West, perhaps? Both have shaped and transformed me in unique ways.

Normally dazzling the folks of NYC, Peter Smith and Sandy Honig (perhaps you’ve seen her as part of Three Busy Debras?) are bringing their comedy-striptease-music-variety extravaganza The Bongo Hour for a pop-in at Dynasty Typewriter along with Ben Moss and Bang Bang Luna.
See what we’ve been missing out on this coast (not to mention that you’ll get to enjoy the likes of John Early and Patti Harrison)
The Bongo Hour will be happening at 10PM on Fri., May 10th and tickets are $10 now and $15 on day of. Go get ‘em here (we hear they’re closing to selling out FYI).
