It’s really interesting to me how elusive Kipperlily Copperkettle has been throughout what is now the first half of the season.

She’s the closest thing we have to an identifiable Big Bad. She gets established in episode 3 to be constantly vigilant, capable of eavesdropping on anything and everything.

And then she’s physically MIA (iirc) for seven episodes, barring her scene with the food trucks at the start of episode 7. I think she’s said to be present at the assembly this most recent episode (ep 10) but she doesn’t appear to be an active participant in anything. That inaction is eating away at me… bc I know she’s doing something.

Talk about haunting a narrative… I’m constantly aware of her nonexistence. I’m paranoid. With every episode that we don’t hear from or interact with KLCK, she grows more terrifying to me. Brennan made sure to establish right away that she could be listening at literally any point. Riz tried to keep that at the forefront of his mind initially, but even he let that idea fall to the wayside as stress built up and time passed.

I think we’ve settled into a false sense of security in this respect. I think that at any point Brennan can and will drop a KLCK bomb on us and oh boy it’s gonna be deliciously messy.

I think my favorite thing about doing ginger red hair instead of cherry red hair is: lying to people about it

In other news, Kiyoka and Yurie? Kiyoka and Yurie make my heart feel a type of way with how loving, supportive, caring, and attentive they are to Miyo. Just... it genuinely makes me happy to see people who actually care about her and worry about her and want her around. They reassure her that she's wanted, they reassure her that they like having her around, and they reassure her that she's not a burden. It's so freaking good and I will never have enough of it.

feel sick thinking abt the way sam’s entire life and being is just. manipulated to serve someone else’s cause. repeatedly the curtains get pulled back and it’s revealed someone else was pulling the strings all along.

does anything even feel real to him anymore? six months old and a demon bleeds into his mouth, his entire life marked by that moment even though he’ll never possess the authentic memory of it. his entire childhood his father thinks he has evil lurking inside of him and treats him according, but never mentions it. his college best friend gets possessed by a demon who introduces sam to a girl he’ll fall in love with so that he can kill her and force sammy onto a path of vengeance. his brother dies and the only person he stays close to makes him believe the only way he can get revenge is to drink her blood, gets him to embrace what’s inside him and reclaim the awful thing that happened to him and does it only so she can use him to start the apocalypse.

what can he trust? everyone has their own agendas when dealing with sam and yet somehow they’re all still about sam. he’s the centre of their machinations, their mouldable toy, build your own future boy king of hell. sam’s manipulated and moved around, everyone trying to shape him into what they want him to be. he makes me feel insane

Candela Obscura is very fun in terms of horror, because I have never been particularly bothered by horror, but when I have been, I'm always like, is this because of how I react in particular or because of how effective the visuals or the atmosphere are? And that's kind of hard to differentiate in the genre people most often consume horror in (film) and for me, who reads books very visually, it can be hard in that format as well.

With Candela it's like, this is deeply unsettling despite there being no visuals beyond the general set and the action being dictated to me while mechanics are happening, which is something that can take absolutely you out of the atmosphere of the thing. Even if you're used to the actual play format, a mechanics heavy scene especially without notable GM guiding is going to remind you that you are watching people play a game. There's a lot to say about how this show's cast have phenomenal grasp of the genre and the atmosphere, but even then, it is a hard line to manage, and they are doing it masterfully. And that's what makes it so fun as a concept! Candela has very effective storytelling, but it's also a lot easier to see the edges of the story, because the "man behind the curtain" of the story so to speak is on full display.

Anyway, this is a long-winded way of saying that I really have confirmed I have no issue with horror, because I passed out instantly upon going to bed and then let a lab tech take my blood this morning without even thinking of making some eldritch monster joke. Which is, not gonna lie, a little bit wild to me.
