Do you guys ever think about how SQ's problem with speaking might have something to do with the Whisperer?
Like
This has been something that's been at the back of my mind for a while now. But I started thinking about it more after this one fic I read.
Think about it.
What if SQ got into the institute because he was smart? He's been around for a long time; in fact, he might be one of (if not the) oldest executive there. He could've come before Curtain started doing the kidnappings.
What if SQ was admitted to the institute because he was good at speaking?
He doesn't have to use big words. He could very easily use simple ones. But he still tried to use big, complicated ones. Which makes you wonder: Why?
What if SQ used to do public speaking? Debate? What if he could write amazing papers, and was even better at presenting them? What if he was that person who would hunt through the thesaurus for hours to find The Perfect Word? What if he had a way with words, a rhythm, a rhyme, so much so that he sang just like a bird out on a line?
He worked his way up through the institute, using his words as a sword; dueling, parrying, all while making sure that it never truly hurt anyone. He won his place as a messenger, and was given the job of chanting, just like all the others. Yet, none could pronounce the phrases as well as SQ, who did it with such clarity and precision that he quickly became the child Curtain used most.
SQ had his whole life set out for him. All he had to do was stick to the straight and narrow path, follow Ledroptha Curtain wholeheartedly and with no questions, and he could make it big in life.
The only problem was, SQ was curious. He wore his heart out on his sleeve, seemingly naïve to the ways of the world.
He knew Curtain liked him. He knew that he had been made an executive younger than any of the others, not just because he was authoritative, and could convince even the most skeptical, but because Curtain favored him.
(He, too, favored Curtain; idolizing him, seeing him as a father figure.)
Because of this, SQ began asking questions. He was simply curious. Inquisitive. He asked what the messages were for. What they were doing.
Curtain was blunt with him.
SQ was horrified.
He tried to leave. He couldn't stay in a place where he was being used to hurt people, so many people. Curtain couldn't let him go. Sure, he could've very easily erased his memory, and sent him off to the mainland; but deep down, Curtain cared about SQ, whether he wanted to admit it or not.
So instead, he did something he had never tried before; he erased the event from SQ's memory.
The first few times it happened, he didn't get it quite right. He would erase more or less than he needed by accident. But eventually, he mastered it. That's when he began the idea of recruiting children.
SQ, meanwhile, had begun to lose his sharp tongue.
Words were harder to remember. Speeches he used to be able to recite with such clarity were now foggy, filled with muck. People no longer listened to him, the authority in his words covered by a curtain of uncertainty, his once smooth and sharp sword stuck in the scabbard.
He tried. He did. Every day, he studied his thesaurus; his book of words which he held dear. And every time he began to regain his rhythm of speech, his way with words, he would ask questions again. Curtain would respond, always hoping he might get a different reaction.
(He never did.)
And so SQ would once again be subjected to the Whisperer, as the words he held dear slipped away from him. His tongue in part also slipped up more, as day by day he stuttered and stumbled over his words, his motor functions soon following, till instead of being known as strong, clever, smart, ambitious, and caring, he was called weak. Clumsy. Stupid. Foolish.
Soft.
He still tried. Every day, he went back to his books, his thesaurus and his dictionary. Studied his words, his old papers, his speeches. Others' speeches that he had memorized. Tried so hard to regain his memory, his sense of confidence. Of worth.
And then, one day, his book of words disappeared.
And SQ never quite could get back up on his feet.

@whisperer-seb
