Jewish, Muslim and Christian community leaders in Whitehorse combined their efforts on Sunday to support humanitarian relief in Gaza.
An event held at the United Church in downtown Whitehorse raised funds for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Hundreds of people attended to listen to live music, eat a traditional Jewish and Muslim feast, and support the cause.
Rick Karp, president of the Jewish Cultural Society of Yukon, said the idea for the event came from Israr Ahmed, president of the Yukon Muslim Association.

Schwatka Lake, Whitehorse
Schwatka Lake is a reservoir created by the damming of the Yukon River in Whitehorse, Yukon, completed in 1958. The dam provides electrical power generation and is operated by the Yukon Energy Corporation. The White Horse Rapids, which gave the city its name, are now under the lake. The lake was named after Frederick Schwatka, a US Army Lieutenant who was first to explore the total length of the Yukon River.
A fish ladder has been constructed around the hydroelectric dam to allow the passage of Chinook salmon to their spawning grounds upstream of Whitehorse. The Chinook salmon that pass the dam have the longest freshwater migration route of any salmon, over 3,000 kilometres to the mouth of the Yukon River in the Bering Sea.
Whitehorse Water Aerodrome, a float plane base, is located on the lake. The lake has been the city's water supply for some years, but the city is now converting to relying entirely on aquifers, partly due to the threat of pollution from fuel spills and other activities by people in the watershed of the lake. Previously, there had been talk of moving the float plane base or the water supply to Fish Lake, which is impractically located to the west over a winding, steep road.

A new music program that lets students guide their lessons is offering a pressure-free way for Indigenous youth to engage with music classes.
Eleven-year-old Erykah Cletheroe-Blackjack, for example, has been writing, recording and mixing her own songs on an iPad, with the help of her instructors during the after-school program.
"It's really cool … and they helped make me feel really good. And it made me feel like it's another way of sharing my feelings," she said.
New Music Education North started in November and runs four nights per week out of the Yukon Transportation Museum in Whitehorse. Classes are taught by some of the territory's most recognized musicians. [...]
