Grab A Drink with the Asian Tiger Mosquito
As its name implies, Aedes albopictus, also known as the forest mosquito, is endemic to Southeast Asia, where it thrives in the humid tropics and subtropics. There, and in similar regions, this species is active year-round. Where it has been introduced in more temperate regions, the tiger mosquito is only active during the warmer months of the year. Currently it is found on every continent except Antarctica, spread unintentionally by humans throughout the globe.
The Asian tiger mosquito is among the smaller mosquito species, at only 10 mm (0.39 in) long at the maximum. Males are typically smaller than females, and have much bushier antennae, as well as functional auditory receptors. Conversely, females have a longer probiscus Otherwise, the two sexes are largely similar; both have black bodies with white markings along the abdomen and legs. Like all mosquitos, the forest mosquito has two sets of wings, but they aren't very good fliers and rarely stray more than 500 m (0.3 miles) from their breeding grounds.
As with other parasitic mosquito species, only the female feeds on blood. Female forest mosquitos are generalists, in that they can feed on both mammals and birds. In addition, they will also consume nectar and sap along with the males. Females seek out their hosts using their antennae, which carry receptors for carbon dioxide as well as scent and humidity. Both sexes are active mainly during the day, but will hunt and forage at night as well given ample opportunity. This species is also an important food source for many other animals, especially when they're in their larval phase. As adults, bats and birds are their primary predators.
Forest mosquito females only feed on blood when they are in the egg-production phase of their reproductive cycle. They can mate up to four times, producing over 200 eggs over their lifespan, although those in temperate regions have a shorter reproductive period. When they're ready to mate, males will form large swarms, or leks, a few feet above the ground. This attracts females, whose wingbeats produce an audible buzz that males can pick up and hone in on. Males and females mate while in flight, and once they've finished the female departs to lay her eggs in a stagnant or slow-moving body of water.
On average eggs take about 7-10 days to hatch, though some clutches may take up to a month. Once they hatch, the larvae feed on small bits of detritus and bacteria, while developing through four stages of growth called instars. The time this process takes is also variable, ranging from 4 days to 42. At the end, the larvae forms a pupa, from which it emerges 2 days later as a mature adult.
Conservation status: This species has not been evaluated by the IUCN; however, given their large population and adaptability, they are considered stable in their home range. In other parts of the world where they've been introduced, they are considered a pest species both for their irritating bites and their role as disease carriers.

White Day❤️
《Celebrated annually on March 14, one month after Valentine's Day, when people give reciprocal gifts to those who gave them gifts on Valentine's Day. It began in Japan in 1978. Its observance has spread to several other Asian nations and countries worldwide.》
Data source: Wikipedia
Hey guys! Do you remember the art  I posted on Valentine's Day last year?
As you can remember, there was a sweet little lady alone in Valentine's Art last year. Lady alone...
Yes, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that Lady looked lonely while looking at the art. So I initially planned to draw Lady's favorite cat on Valentine's Day this year. Then, I suddenly remembered an anniversary that I had forgotten. It's White Day! (White Day, as I wrote at the top, is a day to repay Valentine's Day.)
So I drew a sweet little cat this White Day as a follow-up to Valentine's Day that I couldn't draw last year.
Hope you like it!😸

Other than Roman history what other things do you find interesting to study/research about :)
Lots of things! Roman history is my current obsession, but in the past I've also glommed onto economics, dinosaurs, astronomy, Greek and Chinese philosophies, linguistics, art history, calisthenics, knitting, Linux, bookbinding, writing, psychology, queer theory...and a ton of goofy fandoms.
Whenever I meet someone new, I like to ask them about their interests, even if it's something I wouldn't be interested in. I ask them what they enjoy about it, what it's like, what they wish more people understood. And when people ask me questions about a topic I don't know the answer to, I usually say, "Let's look it up," and pull up Wikipedia or JSTOR on my phone to hunt down the answer.
Today I learned that there were East Asians in Roman Italy. Yesterday a friend taught me about how data entry can help save kittens' lives. A week ago it was about how to support justice for survivors of residential schools, and three months ago it was geocaching. There are so many cool things you can discover if you can say, "I don't know...but let's find out!"

Do you think it’s possible both the Black and Potter families were Desi? The Desi and MENA Black family posts, Desi Potter family posts, and East Asian Black family posts have been living in my head rent free for a long time, and after reading some of your own posts (and the one you linked to), I’m wondering what geographic regions, ethnicities, or cultures best suit the Potters? Especially in the context of MENA or Desi House of Black, and MENA or Desi Sirius and Regulus, existing in the same canon/timeline/world/whatever. I guess I just really want to pick your brain, if you’re up for the conversation. Which. If you don’t want to discuss it, it’s totally fine! I would just rather ask someone who knows what they’re talking about than me just make a bunch of dumbass assumptions or read Wikipedia with 0 actual cultural context. In particular because the Potters and Blacks have such different stances on things like marrying Muggles or Muggleborns (or, hell, halfbloods) or even just how they interact with them in general. Based on some of the Potter history, they’ve always been more…lenient, I suppose, about mixing and social interactions, but based on your post some Desi communities would be very strict like the Black family. Are there the same sort of polarizing stances concerning caste and class? I’m just asking because the way Bellatrix in particular acts was compared in three separate posts to parts of overarching shared MENA and Desi cultural traits. I know not all families are exactly the same, but I wasn’t sure if there were such extreme disparities between families from similar backgrounds within Desi and MENA spaces, or how that applies to the Potters (or makes it more or less likely they’re Desi) in your opinion. I’m really sorry to bother you about this. Feel free to ignore it if it’s too much. If you have the time and energy, though, I would appreciate any insight you have to offer. (I’m also sorry if this is worded poorly). I don’t mean anything offensive by asking. I just don’t know how to find out without just…asking? I don’t want to put any pressure on you, so only answer if you’re comfortable. It’s just, I’m African American Diaspora so I can’t really claim any cultural competence, to know what it feels like to actually be Desi or MENA. If I’m honest, I’ve pictured James as black before and don’t know what it means or feels like to be someone I’m not, so a fresh perspective is refreshing. Plus, I want to write the Potters as non-white (I’ve never seen Harry as white), non-black POC with respect, care, and courtesy, and the best way to do that is to speak to real people. So again, I’m sorry for taking up your time. I hope this finds you well, and thank you for your consideration/for reading, even if you don’t want to, or can’t, reply.
I think it's very possible that both the Black and Potter families were Desi. And they can be any Desi culture you like. The way the Black Family can be maharashtrian, it can also be Bihari, or Uttar Pradeshi or any other regional culture you want to associate them with. Its entirely up to you and your imagination and the amount of information you have about the regional culture you want to tie them to.
For me, the Potters will always be Maharashtrian, mostly because I am a Maharashtrian and that is the culture I am most familiar with. Even in Maharashtra, which is the third largest province in India, the culture differs literally every 30 km or so.
Now about the Blacks' and Potters' differences in stances about blood purism: yes, there is exactly the same polarization in views about the castes and classes. There are many people who still follow the caste system even though it is "abolished" (I put this in double apostrophe because there has been a lot of political unrest in the north east Indian provinces about this over the past couple of months, search up recent events in Manipur if you want to know), and there are just as many people who are liberal and lenient. There are the same extreme disparities as you put it, and they are violent and if anyone tries to deny it they're an ignoramus and you shouldn't pay attention to them. The difference in... opinion, shall we say, of the people of India has been around for decades. There is a saying here "Unity in Diversity", and it is an excellent representation of the fact that India is diverse and it is going to stay diverse, and that is a good thing. There will be differences in culture, food, clothing, social cues, political stances, languages and dialects, religion and belief. These differences are what make India India. The likelihood of the Potters and/or Blacks being Desi is neither increased nor decreased by their stances in socio-politics, or any other habits/traditions that they follow or things that they say.
Re: you point about not knowing how to find out without asking— that is the only way to find out. If you don't ask questions, how will you get the answers? Pop into my inbox either here or on @amrut-ofthegods any time of the day and I'll make sure to answer. It might be a bit late but I will answer, I promise.
I'm so glad there are people actively wanting to learn about cultures and traditions apart from their own in a respectful manner, and anyone and everyone is always welcome to ask questions. Hope this helped!

Hello there!! I see a lot of your world building posts on a regular basis, and I love getting to hear about everything you're working on, so I want to ask: how do you go about world building? What's your process? How do you keep track of it all?
As always I adore seeing you on my dash and I love seeing you in my notifs, all my love to you! May you have a good timezone!!
Oh how to answer this... Hmm... I guess it's kind of a hyperfixation on one particular aspect at a time? I'll think about one aspect or another and ideas will come to me. Depending on what it is I may have to do some research and then start writing things down (or in some cases drawing).
For example, I started working on an alphabet for the Avestrens (bird people) in Project 47 and early on I had decided to avoid the monoculture tropes so often seen in scifi/fantasy so there are populations of Avestrens spread out across three continents. After coming up with this, I thought it would be fun to base their language on mythical bird names.
Three days of looking up mythical birds on Wikipedia (and one or two other sites), I had enough to go on. Then I broke down things into themes. For example, the nations of Kyros had Asian themes so I used various bird/bird like creature names from Asian mythologies. Kyros has two different Avestren languages. All in all I came up with 9 different alphabets.
Right now for my Final Fantasy fic I'm (slowly) coming up with backstories and technobabble about the various planets in The Quintet. (For example, Eden orbits at 2.5 AU's which is roughly the orbit of the dwarf planet Ceres in the asteroid belt IRL, which takes 4.6 Earth years to orbit around the Sun. For a fun FFXIII/DS9 reference, I gave Eden a 26 hr day, which I had to find a calculator online to convert into 1550 hours in a year, which I evened out to 50 months lasting 31 days each, cause I really didn't want to do the math to try and make a leap year kinda thing...)
(The Quintet has common hour/etc. definitions, but years and days are all by planet (though most of the more habitable worlds are more or less the same in that regard), so for the example above they use Dia Eden for an Eden Day and Annus Eden for Eden Year (change planet name as needed).)
As for keeping track of it all... I do that with multiple Word files, sometimes with multiple versions, cause when I make a big change I'll save as a new file. I tend to keep a sort of general idea file I'll call "Production Notes" and then make a different file for each specific thing (character lists, biology stuff, etc.) Sometimes I'll write things in a post here or elsewhere and then copy/paste them into Word, but mostly sometimes I'll type it all out first then copy/paste it here or wherever.
I have a folder for each project and then multiple folders for each thing associated with that project. (And I've been doing this for YEARS and will often go back to old notes for inspiration or whatever.)
Thank you so much for the kind words and the ask!!!!

hey can i ask what the actual hell white day is? damn that's some pretty art tho
hey! sure thing!
citing wikipedia (sorry, my imagination is lacking),
White Day is celebrated annually on March 14, one month after Valentine's Day, when people give reciprocal gifts to those who gave them gifts on Valentine's Day. It began in Japan in 1978; its observance has spread to several other Asian nations and countries worldwide.
to summarise, in Japan, as well as in other countries, a month after valentine's day, you have white day, in which you can reciprocate the gifts you got in valentine's day. usually girls give gifts on valentine's day and guys on white day (of course, lemme brush that heteronormativity aside).
how does this connect to my post? those cards are from the japanese rhythm and gacha game project s.ekai (no dot in the actual name btw), and, among many other occasions, they usually release a set of cards (you use them in game and all) for white day.
and those beautiful cards are the set for this year's white day (they release them way before the 14th, so that's why they're already here).
I hope this answers your question!

Submitted Via Google Form:
I want to create an area of land with lots of rain year round (450 earth days). In monthy averages, as low as 1,500mm during 'dry' season and up to 4,000m during wet season for perhaps 36,000mm annual rainfall? What kind of geography, other aspects of climate, or types of life that can naturally live there, as well as what might be need to adapt there? How about natural disasters especially floods or landslides?
Tex: Gimme a second to collate the data you’ve presented here-
450 Earth days of rain/year
1,500 mm = 1.5 m, low point of rain
4,000 m, high point of rain
1.5 m + 4,000 m = 4,001.5 m/year
36,000 mm = 36 m, which ≠ 4,001.5 m
For some comparative data, the “List of weather records § Rain” (Wikipedia) and the engineering topic “Rain Rate” (Science Direct).
I don’t know your daily rate of rain, or seasonal rhythms of high vs low rain rates, so that would need calculating. If you know that, then you can build weather patterns around it. I would ideally recommend comparing your rain rates to real-world locations, and take a look at their position on Earth and related meteorological and geophysical characteristics for your starting points.
Feral: Some geological conditions that would likely need to be met for the amount of rainfall you need without it being just completely underwater:
-4,000 meters of rainfall is enough to literally cover the Empire State Building 10x over and then some or cover Mount Wycheproof, the world’s smallest mountain, nearly 100x over.
-Given that every other measurement is given in millimeters, did you really mean 4,000 meter? 4,000 millimeters of rain a month for possibly half the year is still a whole lot. Mawsynram, India has the highest average annual rainfall a year, and they only have just shy of 12 meters of rain annually.
-There needs to be steep drainage, probably into an ocean.
-That much water also needs to be evaporated back into the air. That means sun, heat, and/or wind.
-The process of the water draining will also strip the topsoil, so even if they tried to grow food during the dry season, they would not have very much luck.
How Stuff Works: Weather
Wiki: Mawsynram
Utuabzu: There's a few geographic features you can use to increase rainfall (I assume you meant 4000mm, rather than 4000m, which I don't think is physically possible). You can make use of mountains to create a rain shadow, forcing the rains that would otherwise have fallen further inland to instead fall on the mountains. Relatedly, you can also put a large desert region behind these mountains to create the conditions for a monsoon cycle.
There are three main monsoons on Earth: the Asian Monsoon (driven by the high pressure system that develops over the Tibetan Plateau in Summer), the West African Monsoon (driven by the high pressure system that develops over the Sahara in Summer) and the Australian Monsoon (driven by the high pressure systems that develop over central Australia, though because of interference from other systems like the Indian Ocean Dipole and the Pacific El Niño-La Niña cycle it is significantly weaker and less reliable than the other two).
In terms of adaptations you can look to real-world regions that experience very high rainfall. Traditional architecture in these regions often involves building on high stilts. Drainage is often a significant concern in wider urban planning, and terracing is often very important for agriculture to avoid soil erosion. Floods and landslides are perennial problems in these regions. If there is no volcanism or some other means to refresh soils, the rain can leech the nutrients from them.
Sorry if this is a bit rambling. I'm on painkillers after having a wisdom tooth out.
Feral: After discussing this further with Tex, I want to add my own thoughts on the math to this idea.
My assumptions:
-Given you called out 450 Earth days for the year but not the length of days or months, I’m going with a 24-hour day cycle and 28-31 days for the month. 30 goes really well into 450, so we’ll say a 15-month year.
-I can’t imagine 4,000m is what you meant given reasons stated above, so I’ll work with 4,000mm.
Starting backwards from 36,000mm, we have
36 = 4x + 1.5y
Given that 4 x 9 is 36, and we need to be able to account for the dry season, x < 9.
36 = 4(8) + 1.5y => a dry season lasting 2 ⅔ months which is not enough to give us 15 months.
36 = 4(7) + 1.5y => y = 5 ⅓
36 = 4(6) + 1.5y => y = 8
36 = 4(5) + 1.5 y => 10 ⅔
36 = 4(4) + 1.5y => 13 ⅓
So to get approximately 36,000mm annually, you need a rainy season between 5 and 6 months long, or between 150 and 180 days. Your daily average rainfall during this time will be 133.33 mm.
So given the much longer year, how do the numbers break down to compare to the real world?
133.33mm is half the average rainfall Mawsynram receives in the entire month of October. Daily. For 5 to 6 months. At the height of Mawsynram’s 9 month rainy season, which is in July, the average rainfall is 3,300mm. When you take the entire 9 month season, the average rainfall is 12,345mm in the season, or 1,371.667mm averaged monthly. Even when you take out March and November, when the season is just getting started and petering off respectively, the total is 12,099, and the monthly average is 1,728.429mm.
Now, given that your year is approximately (a little less than) 1.5 times the length of an Earth year, how does that work out?
Taking an average annual rainfall of 11,872mm x 1.5 = 17,808. Your rainfall is still well over double the wettest place on Earth.
And that’s before we get to the proportion in the year of rainy season to dry season. If you proportion your months more like Mawsynram’s, you’ll end up with 11.25 months of rainy season (¾ of 15), which is 45,000mm of rain in just the rainy season.
My main recommendation after all of this is to reevaluate your numbers, and I hope we’ve given you the tools you need to do so.

If you're a brit, I highly recommend Jay aka Hyphenated for her in-depth university level history and sociology of black britain.
It is dense stuff so start at the beginning because she builds on previous topics. Take the time to take notes, pause to read wikipedia, other condensed history sources or focused documentaries (Lenny Henry's documentary on Caribbean brits is a good accessible starting point).
I've learned so much. Unlike quite a few video essayists where the point could be made in a concise article, her videos are more likely to make me read many of the sources to get better grounding in on various topics that have been synthesised into a thesis. This is high level analysis with a couple of pop culture critique videos thrown in. It's also so much that's missing from our whitewashed curriculum and political discourse.
To be anti racist outside of the US means to dismantle a lot of very subtle or very complex learned behaviours and learning to identify historical intersections beyond black, brown or asian, I mean dog knows our categories of whiteness sure aren't as simple as the USA. We've been polishing our racism down to a fine art of plausable deniability and overlapping systems combining carrot and stick.
For non background listening and days when the brain can handle multiple threads and layers of nuance.

World Cup IPTV for Free LIVE
In May 2011, charges of corruption among FIFA senior executives raised doubts about the World Cup 2022, which would be staged in Qatar. Officials from Qatar's 2022 bid team have denied any misconduct. The source of the charges later acknowledged to inventing the allegations of corruption. FIFA acknowledged receiving the retraction. The subject of migrant workers' rights has also received attention, with a Guardian investigation alleging that many workers are denied food and drink, have their identity papers taken away from them, and are not paid on time or at all, thus making them slaves. 'SCHUMER Act' To Require Pro-Ukraine Lawmakers to Serve on Front Lines 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
Chuck Schumer © Pete Marovich
In October, US President Joe Biden requested $105 billion in supplemental funding to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and US allies in the Asian Pacific, with $61.4 billion of that earmarked for Ukraine. That bill, including various versions of it, has since stalled in Congress, even as its price tag has ballooned to over $118 billion.
Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R) has introduced a bill that would mandate members of Congress sign up for military service if they push for more aid to Ukraine.
Specifically, the bill as leaked says members of Congress would have to serve in active duty for at least six months.
“If a Member of Congress advocates for providing military support for Ukraine the Member:
1) shall enlist in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, or Coast Guard; and
2) shall be assigned for not fewer than 6 months to active duty in support of a contingency operation.”
Called the Senators Can Help Underpin Military Engagement and Readiness, or SCHUMER, Act, Luna said she introduced the bill in response to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) ultimatum that if Russia is allowed to take Ukraine, American troops may be used to fight Russia in Eastern Europe.
“If we don’t aid Ukraine, Putin will walk all over Ukraine, we will lose the war and we could be fighting in eastern Europe and a NATO ally in a few years. Americans won’t like that,” Schumer said earlier this month on American television.
The bill was leaked to a UK media outlet before it was meant to be viewed by the public, but Luna said that did not bother her. “I make no apologies,” she said. “My bill, the SCHUMER Act, would require Members of Congress to fight on the front lines in Ukraine if they support Schumer’s calls for American sons & daughters to fight.”

Rand Paul Blasts Mitch McConnell's "Outrageous" Support for Ukraine Aid! “It’s criminal neglect for Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer, and Joe Biden to get together to send $100 billion overseas to fix someone else’s border before addressing our border,” Paul told Fox Business’s Larry Kudlow in an interview on Friday. 🇺🇸 The US Senate advanced a $95 billion supplemental funding bill with aid for Israel and Ukraine, after lawmakers rejected a version of the legislation with border policy measures. (February 8, 2024, Sputnik International)
The US Senate has passed a $95.3 billion military aid package for Ukraine and Israel, with no funding to tackle the flood of illegal immigrants being trafficked across the southern border.
While Luna is a staunch conservative as indicated by her party membership among other things, the idea that politicians should have to fight in the wars they advance is one rooted in the anti-war movements of the past as well as the sentiments of veterans.
“Politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organizing nothing better than legalized mass murder,” Harry Patch, the last surviving World War One veteran who served in the trenches wrote in his book The Last Fighting Tommy before his death in 2009.
Luna served in the United States Air Force from 2009 to 2014.
While Schumer did not advocate for sending troops into Ukraine, only warned that war may come if Russia moves past Ukraine, an accusation he provided no proof for and Russia has repeatedly denied, the comment was perceived as a threat to the American people to some. And it was those comments that inspired Luna to draft her bill.
“In honor of Chuck Schumer, I’ll be introducing a bill that will require any politician who advocates for sending American troops to Ukraine to be required to fight on the front lines with them,” Luna said.
The Congresswoman said that other members of the House of Representatives will have until February 12 to sign on if they want to be counted as an original co-sponsor.

Ukraine is Slowly Increasing Production of Bohdana Howitzers - Technology Org
Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer 2S22 Bohdana was pushed into service after the Russian invasion in 2022. In June 2022 Ukrainian forces used Bohdana to liberate the Snake Island and since then they’ve been trying to push Bohdana into series production.
The development of the self-propelled Ukrainian 155 mm howitzer Bohdana was not easy, but now it’s in production, EP writes. The Bohdana project is a good reminder that Ukraine chose its own path a long time ago. The caliber of this howitzer is a NATO-standard 155 mm – not the Russian 152 mm. And it was intensively developed by Ukraine in 2015-2018.

Since the outbreak of the war, the Russians have been launching missiles at the Kramatorsk Heavy Duty Machine Tool Building Plant, where Bohdana was made. Now the company has been relocated and its activities have resumed. Currently, up to 6 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers are produced per month, but there are plans in motion to increase their production rate.
According to sources in the Ukrainian forces, about 30 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers have already been purchased for the Ukrainian army. In addition, a towed version of the gun is being developed. The Bohdana completed battlefield trials and proved to be a great artillery weapon.
25 companies and about 400 people are involved in the production of the Bohdana. Production was decentralized to make it resilient against Russian attacks. The Bohdana chassis was initially manufactured by KrAZ, but after the bankruptcy of the company, an alternative had to be found.
In 2021 that alternative became Belarusian MAZ. After the beginning of the war, economic relations between Ukraine and Belarus were cut off, but there are still MAZ chassis left in Ukraine, so Bohdana howitzers are still produced on the MAZ platform. In the future, they may be completely replaced by the Czech Tatra T815-7 chassis, which are already in use, although cost twice as much.

Price, of course, is important. It is now estimated that the Bohdana should be half the price of the French CAESAR. Ukrainians believe that African, Asian and Latin American countries might be interested in purchasing these howitzers after the war.
According to Vladislav Belbas, head of the production of armoured vehicles in Ukraine, the Bohdana concept envisages the possibility of mounting the gun on different chassis.
The Bohdana does not yet have an automatic loader, but that might be a good thing, because a simpler weapon is more reliable and easier to repair. According to EP journalists, the Russian forces have not yet destroyed any of the Bohdana howitzers, and the few that were damaged are being repaired.
