Wild Turkeys, including a leucistic female (this coloration occurs in approx. 1/100,000 per Audubon).
photos by me, 2024-03-25. A cloudy day at Cornelia Fort Airpark, so I will try another day when the lighting conditions are better, hoping that the leucistic bird is still around.

a wild turkey displays an unusual color mutation. wild turkeys are typically solid brown with barred markings; domestic turkeys have been selectively bred for a larger range of coloration. however, wild turkeys can be affected by genetic mutations such as leucism, which appears to correlate to this bird’s appearance. leucism can cause a lack of pigment throughout the body or in selected areas (a piebald appearance, like this turkey), but not a full lack of melanin as in albino animals.

MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND ONE: WILD TURKEY vs. COMMON GRACKLE
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have the grim gobbler, the harbinger of the harvest, the wild turkey!
weighing in at up to 11kg/24lbs, this heavyweight of the bird world is not to be underestimated. unlike its domesticated cousins, this bulky combatant is an agile flier, able to soar into the trees to roost at night. you'll recognize this unforgettable bird by its famous gobble, a noise loud enough that it can be heard up to a mile away. its opponent better be ready to reap what it sows, because the wild turkey is fighting to win!
IN THE RED CORNER, it's time to make some noise for our next competitor. hailing from backyards across north america, it's the one and only common grackle!
with a piercing gaze that can intimidate even the most seasoned wrestlers, the common grackle is a force to be reckoned with in the ring. it's a master of intimidation and knows how to use that to its advantage. this bird's call is metallic and harsh, being compared to a power line buzzing. so get ready, because the common grackle is here to prove that it's the baddest bird in the business. are you ready to witness the power of the grackle?

Tumblr media Tumblr media
First up a wild turkey!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is a barred owl!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A red shouldered hawk!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is a bit iffy but it's most likely a broad winged hawk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly a great horned owl!
Hope y'all enjoyed this little post about feathers, and some of the birds we've spotted!
As always, after taking pictures make sure to put the feathers back where you found them in accordance of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act!

What a beautiful face. Wild Turkey. (It's blinking in the second photo, which is why its eye looks cloudy.)

There was a flock of wild turkeys in our neighbour's yard yesterday. This is the first time in over thirty-five years that I have seen them in our neighbourhood. Last week I saw a hawk, which was unusual too.
