@madamhatter said:  ship bias + characters from period dramas that have potential w/ Sonia ( Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, etc! )
Ship Bias (Send a theme please!)
Tumblr media
Well this is just Soar playing up my particular brand of fandom over here!
Disclaimer: Personally and professionally, I watch a lot and interact a lot with period dramas. Particularly those that are filmed or take place in the UK. It’s an obsession at this point. Britbox, Acorn, Amazon Prime, and PBS Passport are my streaming mainstays (Netflix and Disney+ too of course, but I get most of my drama fix on the other platforms).
The hardest thing about this prompt? Not picking love interests I/the mun adores and not necessarily picking the love interests whose counterparts inspire my version of Sonia. Some of that’s going to come through here and I apologize for it, but if a character/ship has inspired my Sonia, probably makes sense to ship her with half that ship too.
So here we go:
For Downton Abbey - I have to go with Tom Branson for this, if just for the fact my Sonia is inspired by Sybil Crawley. Love across socio-economic classes, an interest in politics, and slow-burn? P L E A S E. Otherwise, I love the idea of someone like Bertie Pelham: familiar with the aristocracy but as a distant relative and very supportive of a woman in charge. And then one day, he ends up becoming an aristocrat himself and has to adapt to that world.
For Bridgerton - In considering all of the Bridgertons and their love interests (including the books!), I have to go with Colin Bridgerton as my number one contender. Adores his family, has a great sense of humor, polite to everyone, has an interest in travel and writing, and wants to do the right thing. Otherwise, I think Gareth St. Clair (Especially after the second epilogue for the book he’s in. Sonia deserves a love interest that supportive of whatever harebrained adventure she wants to go on) or maybe even Eloise Bridgerton might be fun to ship with Sonia.
Though my favorite/best Bridgerton love interest in general is forever Michael Sterling. See Book 6/When He Was Wicked. Two words: Gardener’s Cottage. If you don’t mind a few spoilers for show-only Bridgerton fans, this article is a good one.
Now for other dramas:
Dwight Enys (Poldark) - Similar reasons as for Downton, I have Caroline Penvenen as an inspiration for Sonia. But Season 1 storyline aside for Dwight, Sonia would be very moved by his commitment to his patients and his friends, especially where Ross is concerned (seriously though Dwight > Ross. Deal with it, Poldark fans).
James Herriot (All Creatures Great and Small) - Gentle, awkward, a bit naive, and wants to make his way into the veterinary world? Sonia would be very taken watching James take care of all sorts of animals (see: Gundham) and would want to support him when he has to make difficult decisions concerning his patients. I know this show is based off real life so I’m not sure how well it counts, but if so? That’s a good option.
William “The Duke” Wellington (Miss Scarlet & The Duke) - Grumpy, snarky, and really not fond of women who meddle in his line of work, could you imagine a Princess Sonia all too eager to look into murder investigations alongside William over at Scotland Yard? The question becomes if he could throw Sonia in jail when she’s out of line like he does Eliza.
Will Davenport (Grantchester) - This would prove to be a very interesting dynamic. Unlike Sidney and his litany of lady problems, Will’s pretty devoted to his work. But he suffers from a stifling upperclass family, so much so that he fled to the church for refuge and a way of life to get away from them. Sonia too has entertained thoughts of cutting off her family on occasion, and it would be quite a journey for both Will and Sonia to come to terms with who they are and the fact they can’t run from it forever.
I’m sure if I spend more time I could probably think of more. And as much as I wanted to throw in characters from Outlander, Versailles, and A Discovery of Witches in here, I think I prefer them in their canon ships. I also only chose from television shows, not miniseries or movies.
And not actually a ship itself but a ship dynamic? Victoria and Albert in Victoria. The sort of “I’m supposed to marry them but I’m not sure this is a good idea” to “I actually love you and I can’t imagine not being with you” to “We’re going to change this country together” to “You’re acting ridiculous and I won’t hesitate to tell you as such” dynamic?
I love this for Sonia in both historical AUs and modern AUs.

Certain series are derided – usually by people who haven’t seen them – as cosy or sentimental when, at their heart, they hide something flintier, deeper and darker. Call  the Midwife is one such, and Grantchester another. You can see why these assumptions are made – television shows featuring crimebusting clergy don’t tend to push boundaries or probe taboos, whether it’s Tom Bosley in Father Dowling Mysteries or Mark Williams in Father Brown.
The opening to the fourth series of Grantchester would have changed few minds, as Rev Sidney Chambers (James Norton) and DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) engaged in some light-hearted banter about the culture wars stirring in 1956. “I blame that fella with the pelvis,” grumbled the latter, citing a lack of respect among the youngsters. “What’s his name?”
And then we were off into a knockabout chase after a knife-wielding ruffian that offered for Sidney sweet relief from the tiresome rounds of church committee meetings, village fetes and sermons to the same old faces. It wasn’t too much of a stretch to imagine a bit of projection from Norton here. This will be his last series of Grantchester before relative unknown Tom Brittney takes up the dog collar as Geordie’s new partner, Will Davenport. Perhaps he too had become tired of the routine.
The exact circumstances of his departure remain a mystery, but don’t be surprised if they have something to do with Violet Todd (Simona Brown), the comely young African American Civil Rights campaigner accompanying her father, Paterson Joseph’s charismatic preacher Nathaniel Todd, on a fundraising visit to Britain.
