Why Ben Affleck and his film editor rough cut scenes on set for the ‘Air’ actors
By Jordan Lee
January 8, 2024
There’s an ensemble scene late in Ben Affleck’s shoe-centric saga, “Air,” in which principal cast members, including Affleck as Nike founder Phil Knight, are seated at a boardroom table as rookie Michael Jordan decides whether to sign with the underdog shoe company.
“They already know the story, they already know Michael Jordan, they already know how it ends,” Affleck tells The Envelope about building drama in a scene that everyone already knows the outcome to. “They better be learning information that’s new and kind of interesting or has to be genuinely funny. And it all has to be rooted in reality.”
The tipping point comes when Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, played by Matt Damon, addresses Jordan directly. “A shoe is just a shoe until somebody steps into it, and then it has meaning. The rest of us just want a chance to touch that greatness. We need you in these shoes not so you have meaning in your life, so we have meaning in ours. Everyone at this table will be forgotten as soon as our time here is up, except for you. You’re going to be remembered forever, because some things are eternal. You’re Michael Jordan, and your story is going to make us want to fly.”
The monologue, made all the more famous after Donald Trump used it without permission in an ad for his 2024 presidential bid, was by screenwriter Alex Convery but rewritten by Affleck and Damon to reflect the price of fame. It’s part of the process for Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, who welcomes dialogue input from all his cast members, who include Viola Davis, Chris Tucker and Jason Bateman.
“Writing is creating the word, but it really is a process of acting, especially with great actors. The way I earned trust on this movie was by having editorial on the set,” offers Affleck, who invited his editor, William Goldenberg, to rough-cut scenes for actors to observe before moving on. “I think they all found a great place to be, and I think that’s because they were able to see the movie as they were filming it.”
An Oscar winner for “Argo” and veteran editor of such movies as “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Heat” and “The Imitation Game,” Goldenberg had no compunction about letting so many cooks into the kitchen. “I don’t usually get to meet the actors, so on that level it was fun,” he says. “Ben and I have worked together for a long time. I know his sensibility, he knows mine, so we’ve developed a shorthand together.”
As lifelong friends, Affleck and Damon last appeared together in Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel.” But “Air” represents a creative collaboration between them not seen since the beginning of their careers on their breakout hit, “Good Will Hunting.”
“The person who ends up with the stronger opinion tends to win out,” Affleck says about any on-set differences between himself and Damon. “I have respect for him, and I think there’s a reason why he feels so strongly about it. The fights are about who cares more about this. What’s interesting with Matt is I have to earn his respect like I would with any other actor. He doesn’t want to be in a bad movie. He’s not doing me any favors. And I wouldn’t expect him to treat this any differently.”
Their most significant collaboration to date is Artists Equity, a new production company formed with Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital. Employing an innovative business model, they aim to streamline the production process and partner with creators who will share in the commercial success of projects. “Air” is the company’s first production, with a couple future projects in the works — “The Instigators,” starring Damon, Casey Affleck and directed by Doug Liman, and “Small Things Like These,” directed by Tim Mielants and produced by Cillian Murphy, who leads a cast starring Ciarán Hinds and Emily Watson.
“It’s very director-based, it’s very rooted in treating people fairly and reflecting what people bring to the project,” Affleck says of Artists Equity, mentioning another project — “Unstoppable,” Goldenberg’s directorial debut, currently in production.
“It happens there’s a phenomenal part for Jennifer in it,” Goldenberg notes, mentioning Affleck’s wife, Jennifer Lopez, who plays mother to Anthony Robles, a three-time All-American wrestler born with just one leg. “She’s extraordinary to work with. She’s a consummate professional and so helpful to me as a first-time director, whether it’s blocking or little script changes or ideas for her character.”
Affleck has been burned in the past, working with Lopez on “Gigli,” a 2003 rom-com that got scorched by critics and was a box office flop. But that didn’t keep him from producing “Unstoppable,” although he won’t be appearing in the movie.
“With Jen, it was more like she would come home and talk about her day and how it’s going. And I’m secretly trying to find out about dailies,” he says. “I work with my wife the same way I work with Matt or any of the other actors in a movie. The whole thing is geared around respecting the contribution of these incredible artists and what they bring, and giving them the environment and the space to do their best stuff.”
Reflecting on his Oscar wins — in 1998 for the “Good Will Hunting” screenplay, which he co-wrote with Damon, and in 2013 for best picture winner “Argo,” which he produced and directed — Affleck notes that such honors can change your work life but not your inner life.
“I won the Oscar as a very young guy,” he says. “I did appreciate how meaningful it was, and it really changed my career. My life changed overnight. Before that show and after, my life has never been the same. And the second time, I’d been through a lot and had sort of managed to be all over the place in terms of ups and downs, and it was nice for me to be affirmed as a director. But one of the things it told me was it doesn’t make you feel any better or any different. A lot of people go through a depression, because they get the thing they thought their whole life was supposed to be a meaningful thing, and they find ‘This doesn’t change anything about how I feel.’ ”

AIR (2023)
Air is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film directed by Ben Affleck and written by Alex Convery. The film is based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoeline, of which a Nike employee seeks to strike a business deal with rookie player Michael Jordan. It stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis.
The project was announced in April 2022 with Affleck set to direct, as well as star and produce alongside Damon with their newly formed production company Artists Equity. Principal photography took place between June and July 2022 with Affleck reuniting with his frequent collaborators: cinematographer Robert Richardson and editor William Goldenberg. While Michael Jordan was not involved with the production, he did meet with Affleck, offering several suggestions, including the casting of Davis as his mother. Originally set to premiere on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video, distributor Amazon Studios opted to release the film theatrically first after positive test screenings, making it the first Amazon title since Late Night (2019) to be released in theaters without also premiering on Prime Video.
Air had its premiere at South by Southwest on March 18, 2023, and was released theatrically in the United States on April 5. The film received positive reviews from critics, particularly for Affleck's direction, Convery's screenplay and the performances of the cast, and has grossed $90 million worldwide on a budget of $70–90 million. The film also performed well on Amazon Prime Video streaming
Follows the history of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of sports: Michael Jordan.
Critics' reviews
"Ben Affleck Turns Nike’s Quest to Sign Michael Jordan Into This Generation’s ‘Jerry Maguire’ (…) Viola Davis is to acting what Jordan is to sports: Her strength inspires, and she can move us to tears while making it look easy. Peter Debruge: Variety
"Each actor gives a powerful and award winning performance. 'Air' is a slam dunk and ultimately one of the best sports movies ever made" Marisa Mirabal: IndieWire
"'Air' is year's best film so far (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 4)" Richard Roeper: Chicago Sun-Times
"Affleck's directorial record is pretty impressive and 'Air' feels like his most inspired effort to date (…) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)" Brian Truitt: USA Today
"In his fifth feature film, Affleck’s talents exceed expectations. He’s grown as an actor and director but is best when doing both." Valerie Complex: Deadline
"As always, Affleck remains one of the directors who can disguise a powerful parable as giddy, crowd-pleasing entertainment." Richard Whittaker: Austin Chronicle
"Ben Affleck’s ode to Michael Jordan is affectionate and involving, even when it fails to convince"

What is the Review of Transformers: Rise of the Beast?
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (English) Review {2.5/5} & Review Rating
TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS is about Autobots, Maximals and humans coming together for a greater cause. Many years ago, the dark god Unicorn attacks a planet inhabited by the Maximals. Apelinq, the Maximal leader, sacrifices himself, while the other Maximals escape with a crucial Transwarp Key. In 1994, Noah (Anthony Ramos), an ex-military electronics expert, is trying hard to land a job and support his family, comprising his mother Breanna (Luna Lauren Vélez) and younger brother Kris (Dean Scott Vazquez). With no other option, he agrees to steal a car for a good deal. The same day, Elena (Dominique Fishback), an intern at a museum and an expert researcher, gets intrigued by a bird sculpture that arrives in the facility. At night, when there’s no one in the museum, she starts studying it and while doing so, she accidentally triggers it. It sends out a transwarp signature and alerts all the Transformers in New York. One of them is Mirage (Pete Davidson), the car that Noah breaks into. Mirage rushes to a spot, while a scared Noah is inside him. Noah soon learns that Mirage is a Transformer and he meets other Autobots like Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), Bumblebee and Arcee (Liza Koshy). They realize that the signature is emitting from the museum. Mirage asks Noah to help them retrieve the key in return for a huge amount of money. Mirage agrees and he reaches the museum where he bumps into Elena. Meanwhile, Noah and Elena get attacked by Scourge (Peter Dinklage), who works under Unicorn. The Autobots come to the rescue but get defeated. Scourge leaves with the key only to realize that it’s just one half of the Transwarp Key. Elena, through her findings, concludes that the other half of the key must be in Peru. The Autobots leave for the South American country. Noah and Elena also join in as they realize that if the Autobots lose, planet Earth can also be in danger. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Jongnic Bontemps's music has a cinematic and exhilarating feel. Enrique Chediak's cinematography is scenic. The locales of Peru, especially, have been shot beautifully. Sean Haworth's production design is appealing. Ciara Whaley's costumes are nothing special. VFX is topnotch while the action is spectacular. Joel Negron and William Goldenberg's editing is neat.
On the whole, TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS makes for a nice watch thanks to its run time, action and comic moments and the action. However, the popularity of the series in India is fairly limited and this will prove detrimental to its collections.

Pleasantville
Tumblr media
Pleasantville is considered one of the most powerful and beautiful films of all time, I just happened to come across it recently as I was looking at some of Reese Witherspoon’s films.
After I had seen it, I could definitely see how it became one of the alleged most powerful films of all time, It’s message still resonates and speaks volumes about contemporary society. As it explores intolerance in different matters.
And while it certainly isn’t without It’s few flaws, I didn’t particularly care about them, as the film’s acting and It’ s gorgeous aesthetic more than make up for it, it truly treats us to beautiful visuals.
Pleasantville focuses on a brother and a sister, we initially start out in your average suburban American house in the 90’s. The sister who has recently gained in popularity has a date with a jock.
Meanwhile, the brother is preparing for a Pleasantville marathon, good old clean fun and 50’s family values, apparently, nice for an afternoon every now and again but certainly not forever which is exactly what happens here.
Brother and sister coincide in the living room, a fight over the remote control breaks lose, finally the remote falls on the ground and is irreparably broken.
Soon after, a mysterious mechanic offers his services. As they are watching tv, they accidentally push a button they shouldn’t have pushed and end up getting sucked in the programme, prepare for a sickeningly sweet, partly black and white 50’s suburban nightmare.
Perfect at first sight, you get a very hearty breakfast in the morning, that you are not allowed to not finish, bacon, pancakes with maple syrup, as in quantities that would under any normal circumstances guarantee a trip to the nearest hospital.
A crazy diner where the local teens meet up after school, to have their milkshakes and make plans to go to Lover’s Lane, where they subsequently only hold hands and do some very indecent kissing.
The siblings are in a television programme, the people in it, only know said the world and don’t have much of a free will, all their actions have been previously scripted and they never stop to consider doing something differently, this is the sibling turn up.
As it turns out, they can’t leave the town, as it simply ends and starts again after Main Street and Elm Street, they can never read a book for fun, as the pages are without written words, the houses don’t have king size or queen size beds, they don’t need them, as no one knows what sex is.
Until Mary Sue goes out with a local boy and has sex with him, who’s surprised when he gets an erection, and thinks he’s sick, she tells him It’s supposed to happen, funny but also quite tragic.
As the guy drives home, he spots a single red rose amongst the black and white, he has felt emotions and feelings that weren’t scripted, that were completely his own.
It’s the first indication that change is on its way. Later on, Mary Sue explains to her fictional mother what sex is, the mother says “your father would never do that”, Mary Sue tells her that she can have fun without him.
And here is when one of the most visually impressive sequences in the film takes place. The mother takes a bath and touches herself, soon the whole bathroom erupts in colour, and at the exact moment that she has an orgasm, the nearest tree catches fire.
Symbolising that change, a revolution is on its way. Soon all the housewives are asking their husbands for double beds, and don’t always have dinner ready on time anymore, they now leave instructions by the oven.
The people start to have free will, the owner of the local hamburger restaurant, doesn’t see the point in making hamburgers day after day anymore, he starts to paint, other starts to read, and very soon as the people mentally shift and become more liberal and free spirited, they begin to appear in colour.
But there comes a turning point when the coloured people clash with the noncolored people, signs with no coloureds allowed begin to appear.
It all starts when the owner of the hamburger restaurant, paints Betty Parker (the fictional mother of the siblings) naked, a woman he’s clearly in love with, and she seems to be in love with him also.
As he’s much more loving, kinder and respectful of her than her husband, where her husband shames her for now being coloured, he tells her she’s beautiful and to not hide it.
The next day some of the townspeople see the painting of naked Betty, on the diner’s window, and while It’s beautiful and very clearly art. The people are shocked and outraged, apparently bare breasts are corrupting and make people lose it.
Pretty soon their prudishness leads them to destroy the whole diner, the more conservative, proud black and whites turn against the coloureds, they burn books and make a whole set of rules (you could see it as metaphors for racism and fascism).
Everyone has to return to being dull, unwilled, passionless, prudish robots that lack any sense of individualism, the town begins to resemble a fascist regime closely, though eventually it does all end well.
But in the meantime, the film does explore many interesting subjects, such as the dangers of excessive prudishness, of punishing people for creativity and individuality, of the dangers of excessive want for order and control.
Some stuff has to be regulated, I think most people would agree with that, but if people become unhappy, intolerant, hateful and mindlessly and blindly obeying to authority It’s dangerous, as it can lead to everything for the law mentality, in which the law is even above human rights and human life. The film tells us about and instills all this in is along with beautiful cinematography.
But as beautiful as the film, It’s truly pleasant to watch, It’s a film that takes you on a visual and emotional journey. If the acting had been lesser, the film would have dropped to a lesser level.
Luckily this is not the case and we're treated to a cast with great chemistry that delivers powerful and passionate performances, performances that allow you to invest in the characters and their story.
Reese Witherspoon who I love and (she’s been my favourite actress since I consciously remember watching films) affectionately call “chameleon Witherspoon” due to her ability to brilliantly transform into different characters.
She once again shined. Here she was still quite young, but even in her younger years, she never really managed to show inexperience or not convincingly portray a character assigned to her.
She’s natural, charismatic, looks like she’s having while she acts and turns in a strong and consummate performance, she manages to make us care about her character and convincingly shows us the transformation she experiences.
But as much as I like Witherspoon’s performance, so far I’ve never really disliked any of her roles, even if the film in question was on the lousy side, she always remains utterly, unflinchingly, elegant and convincing.
Her performance here is not one of my favourites, simply because I know that she’s capable of more, but it can’t be denied that she shined in what she was allowed to do here.
The film is filled with good performances, some a little more cliche and less developed, they’re roles that don’t really allow the actors room for showing off their acting range, as they’re stereotypes, but nonetheless the actors put their best foot forward and make the best out of their roles.
My favourite performances are Joan Allen and Jeff Daniels as Betty Parker and the diner owner. They’re both some of the only, genuinely kind warm and romantic people in the town.
They’re people with a distinct personality, that appears when the siblings arrive, they adapt so wonderfully and thrive in their happiness in such a delightful way that you can’t help but think that they may have become different on their own, even if the siblings hadn’t arrived.
They’re two characters that are so sympathetic and sweet natured that you can’t help but fall in love with them, and they have such realistic feeling chemistry together, that you can’t help but support them through and through.
The scene where the diner owner wipes off Betty’s B&W makeup is in my view one of the most beautiful scenes between any couple, It’s such a heartfelt, you’re almost forced to feel something.
You genuinely care about these people, and want them together, when I discovered that Betty posed for him I I thought hell yeah these people are more alive than anyone in the town!
Also, he painted her because he finally embraces his love of art, he’s fallen in love with her and wants to show her that she’s loved and that she has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
And he does it through art, and as he does it, they both make each other come alive, It’s not a cold, you sit still over there and I’ll paint you or snap a picture of you, for purely commercial reasons.
It’s a genuine romantic moment between two people, also there’s no “paint me like one of your French girls” ( sorry, I simply couldn’t resist) of any sort to be seen anywhere.
The direction allowed in part for the good acting, it shows that the director worked well with the cast and that they had clear ideas of what to do.
I don’t know if they were allowed much or any improvisation at all, but all the actors deliver performances that feel natural and unforced, not tense or scripted.
As I said earlier some performances are less developed than others, it would have been nice to discover some of these characters more in depth, but It’s not something that detracts.
As those performances are also good, but I do believe that would have elevated it to the next level, you would have been even more emotionally invested.
Next, there’s a few flaws and inconsistencies, things that aren’t explained or that seem a bit out of place, but It’s in very few scenes and the film has such a powerful overall message, that you can easily overlook it.
One thing in the direction that I couldn’t possibly critique is the pacing and timing. The director’s dramatic timing is excellent, everything happens at precisely the right instant, this one of the things that make the film feel so alive, along with its great sense of spontaneity and lastly it never drags.
The cinematography is just utterly stunning, the contrast between black and white and colours makes for gorgeous shots, of course, a large part of it also lies in the camera work.
The shift between colours and black appears in tactfully measured moments, and are filmed in such a way that they surprise and overwhelm in the bests sense of the world.
These scenes feel like little cinematographic pearls, that you collect throughout the film until in the end you’re left with the grand beautiful painting, that it is on a whole.
I see Pleasantville as a painting or a puzzle, that constructs itself before your eyes, as both the scenery and the people change, the camera transmits this in way that never feels all over the place, it feels intimate,It’s more like watching the visual equivalent of what I can only call a sociological fairytale, or a newspaper article being told.
The wonderful soundtrack with music by Randy Newman and Fiona Apple also adds plenty of charm and helps in creating the pleasant atmosphere.
If you want to watch a unique, little film that moves, that touches different subjects originally, that’s beautiful to look at and that It’s heart in the right place I suggest giving Pleasantville a chance.

LOVE, WEDDINGS & OTHER DISASTERS (2020)
Starring Diane Keaton, Jeremy Irons, Maggie Grace, Diego Boneta, Andrew Bachelor, Andy Goldenberg, Melinda Hill, Caroline Portu, Jesse McCartney, JinJoo Lee, Rachel Wirtz, Veronica Ferres, Dennis Staroselsky, Todd Stashwick, Abbey Dubin, William Xifaras, Chandra West, Richard Kline, Elle King, Keaton Simons and Dennis Dugan.
Screenplay by Dennis Dugan.
Directed by Dennis Dugan.
Distributed by Saban Films. 96 minutes. Rated PG-13.
While Diane Keaton has been in more of her fair share of god-awful comedies over the years – Because I Said So or Poms, anyone? – it is still kind of disheartening to see such a wonderful, eccentric talent as Keaton stuck in crap like Love, Weddings & Other Disasters.
At least Keaton has a relatively smallish role in this ensemble misfire, and her character – a sightless woman who is set up on a blind date (blind date, gettit?) with a stuffy, OCD-afflicted caterer to the stars (Jeremy Irons) – is one of the less annoying characters in the film. Still, she (and Irons, for that matter) are way too good as actors to be stuck in a stink bomb like this.
Disasters is probably the defining word in the title of this cheeseball, silly rom-com. Figuratively, of course, but also literally.
We are introduced to Jessie (Maggie Grace), a young wannabe wedding planner, while her boyfriend is dumping her in the middle of a skydive, of all times. Of course, they end up crash landing in the middle of an outdoor wedding, and a video of Jessie knocking the bride and groom into a lake goes viral immediately, to the point when a mere day later, everyone in the world (it seems) recognizes her as the “Wedding Trasher” from Instagram.
It’s bad timing, because Jessie is up for her dream job, planning the wedding for the potential future mayor of Boston. The future politico is afraid Jessie will be too much bad publicity, but his bride-to-be takes a liking to the cute wedding planner. Jessie befriends a cute singer (Diego Bonita) who she wants to play the wedding, but the guy’s band is falling apart because his partner (Jesse McCartney) is falling for a cute new guitarist.
In the meantime, the future mayor’s loser brother (Andy Goldenberg) signs up for perhaps the slimiest reality game show ever, where the contestants have to find love by being chained to the other person for days on end. His partner in the show is a pretty Russian lawyer (Melinda Hill) who turns out to be a stripper (don’t ask…)
And did I forget the Captain of the local duck boat tour (Andrew Bachelor) who spends the entire film looking for a Cinderella fan at a bachelorette party who left her glass slipper on the tour boat? Yeah, I almost did.
There are more characters and stories strewn about in Love, Weddings & Other Disasters, but believe it or not they are even less interesting, and less likable.
Love, Weddings & Other Disasters is essentially an overlong sitcom, and not a good one at that.
Sadly, you can’t expect much more from a film by Dennis Dugan, who was a decent enough light actor in the 1970s and 1980s, but since the 1990s has made a living directing some of the worst movies ever, including several starring his friend Adam Sandler.
If possible, Love, Weddings and Other Disasters misses Sandler’s subtle humor (I was being ironic there…). This may not be Dennis Dugan’s worst film (though it may, there is just so much competition for the title), but that’s hardly a selling point. Avoid this movie like the disaster it is.
