Quote
Friz's Bugs, I found very, very humorous. It was funny, because at the end of my six-years with Chuck and I went over Friz's unit to work on his Bugs, he came to me and said, "remember, you came from Chuck's unit, we don't do Bugs the way Chuck does". So I had to get Friz's Bugs Bunny model sheet and do Bugs all-over.
Willie Ito, animator for Friz Freleng’s unit

here is a smattering of some of my favorite animation anecdotes concerning the WB guys—will probably add onto this last as i remember and discover more, but the public deserves to hear them:
Corny Cole told Chuck Jones that he can "take your Daffy Duck and you can ram him up your asshole" after Jones was dissatisfied with Cole's storyboard pitch for a cartoon because it was not "my Daffy Duck".
Tedd Pierce got his ear bitten by someone's pet monkey at a bar and required both bandages and shots
the writers had to slip fake drawings of Porky in a storyboard pitch for an unrelated cartoon to trick Leon Schlesinger into giving his approval because he would be largely apathetic otherwise
Rod Scribner famously hated Art Davis and decided to play a prank on him by tipping a phone booth he was in 45 degrees, prompting Davis to fall, which then prompts Scribner to tip it back up and run away laughing
additionally, Scribner and Bill Melendez would tip bookcases over and drop loud objects on the floor to distract the Freleng and Jones unit animators below them and, in Melendez's words, "Friz's guys were great because they would fight back"
cameraman Smokey Garner asked to be paid in cash because he feared the feds would get him if they had his information via check--he was eventually talked into receiving checks... until the feds visited him a few weeks later for something else unrelated
animator Tom Ray once got so mad that he opened a window to let some fresh air in, but the glass shattered, completely desecrated his arm and he had to be rushed to the hospital by fellow animator Art Leonardi
the studio often held yearly square dances, and Chuck Jones in particular was a huge square dance junkie; Hillbilly Hare owes its existence to these square dances
lighting film nitrates, if wound tight enough, would prompt them to smolder but not combust; the studio once had to be evacuated and the fire department called because of said self-made smoke bomb
Corny Cole and Willie Ito once got so drunk at a lunch together that Ito ended up vomiting all over Chuck Jones’ office

Can you recommend me one of your favorite books? The more fucked up, the better!
It depends on what you mean by fucked up… there’s books that are edgelord classics but not “good” in the critical sense. I just finished reading De Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom and it was the most fuvked book I ever read, yet I wouldn’t recommend it bc it’s nasty af, poorly written & infamous only for shock value.
The edition I own has this 1933 ass portrait in an upside down cross by Man Ray on the cover:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andd during a Mexican airport security check the border guy pulled it out and asked me what it was and his face turned red bc he also saw I had lingerie in my bag lmaoo. That’s all this book was good for, making ppl think I was a weirdo 🙄
Tumblr media
For other odd books I actually enjoy; Bloody Ukiyo-e by: Suehiro Maruo is great bc it’s an artistic interpretation of 28 historical murders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best “sick psychopath” novels are imo American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis & The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson. These are books that wouldn’t be allowed to get published nowadays, and while I think they’re well-written, the misogyny is very gratuitous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For something edgy yet a bit more girlboss, the 1940s BDSM lesbian dominatrix comic collection of The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline by John Willie goes off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laclos’ Dangerous Liaisons and Nabokov’s Lolita are written in beautiful prosaic style, but I find them disturbing bc the subject matter is so dark and about predatory figures who sexually manipulate others.
Tumblr media
Lastly I can never get enough of guro manga so I recommend anything by Junji Ito. So far I’ve read Tomie, Uzumaki, Gyo, Fragments of Horror and Dissolving Classroom and love them all 🖤

I've had CC with Leech Boy.
Now having William with Leech Boy.
What am I gonna do next, huh?
Have Leeches be apart of the Afton line? Due to how like. Leeches are parasites and are only like. A leech is just a worm with teeth, and their bites leave marks
Anyways. Uhm. Actually
Leech Boy looks like he was drawn by Junji Ito (and I think we should draw Willy Billy in that style tbh. He has the potential to be FUCKING scary in that style. A good scare that keeps you up for days)

I watched Junji Ito Maniac: Tales of the macabre and here's what I thought of each episode 2/3
Here's Part 2 to my review on Junji Ito's new netflix anime! As always Spoilers under the cut Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Review
Tumblr media
Continuing on with what i thought of each episode...
Episode 5: Long Hair In the attic Cont. Long hair in the attic, I remember this story and it's always felt sorta...Sad to me? From the way the episode starts and we see them interact it's really depressing...She obviously cared about this man but he seems to toss her out like there's no issue at all. One thing I really noticed was how they draw blood in this one, It looks really nice. However I think Chiemi's head isn't as pretty when depicted in the anime as it was in the manga however the scraping sounds are definitely more cringe-worthy when you actually get to hear them. Episode 7: Tomb Town I believe this one is actually based on the new translation from VIZ Media, Which as of writing this isn't out yet. I haven't read an online scantlation of it but I was fairly excited to see what it was about going in! The story is actually really interesting to me? I thought it would be sort of boring but...It was really enthralling. The twist was wild to me! The use of 3D for the corpse was actually more interesting to me than the use of it for scenery like cars!
Episode 8: Layers of Fear; The Thing That Drifted Ashore A story I've not read. Surprised yet? I'm not. One thing I thought was neat was seeing the iconic layered image in the doctors office! I've seen images of this manga online. I think the concept of someone having skin line a tree or an onion is kinda cool! The image of the peel was sort of cool but at the same time the thought is painful. I remember i had skin on my foot one time that peeled up but it was so deep...It made me think of that time and it made me cringe. the image of her dragging the blade down her skin...This whole scene was vile and made my skin crawl and my stomach turn I think this was one of the best moments of the series so far. Again with the thing that drifted ashore i felt i had read this one before? However that may have just been the feeling of gyo. Another interesting thing is Tadashi is the name of the protagonist from gyo. Nothing else interested me much aside from the idea of human beings potentially being like parasites.
Episode 9: Tomie: Photo I was most ecstatic for this episode! Tomie is a special interest of mine. My wife loves Tsukiko's character so we were both highly critical coming into this episode. They were worried about Tsukiko's voice as they had seen Demon Slayer and heard her voice actress play Nezuko but we were both surprised by the deeper voice acting the actress did for the character as it was always the sort of manner we imagined the character would speak in. Another thing I'm happy about is how this series seems to be taking Tomie almost in order (Skipping the chapter Basement)! First Tomie, then Morita hospital and now we get chapter 4 Photograph! I can't help but hope for another part or even Tomie to get its own anime but for now I was thrilled with this chapter of Tomie's animated story given both My wife and I had qualms with Tsukiko's strange redesign? Her grown out buzz/pixie cut is swapped with a side swept one? As well as her eyebrows being much thicker than remembered initially... I was also mildly off put by how Tomie's voice changed between series? It's still Monica Rial but she's changed how she speaks for the character. It's deeper for some reason? Which while not a bad change still a strange one to me. One of the most disappointing changes in my wife's opinion was the lack of a willy wonka shirt. (RIP tsukiko's willy wonka t-shirt) I also kind of hated that they seemed to cut certain parts or lines? I know that they have to mind time but they miss the scuffle at the door when tsukiko goes to join her mother. They also miss getting to see tsukiko's mother's face as well as learning her father is in the military and at his post. Small details that feel..Like they just flesh out tomie's universe more. While the episode is very nearly shot for shot there's a lot that changed (To someone like me who is...a little obsessed <3) There's almost too many changes to over look.

Choko Iida and Shinichi Himori in The Only Son (Yasujiro Ozu, 1936)
Cast: Choko Iida, Shinichi Himori, Masao Hayama, Yoshiko Tsoubuchi, Mitsuko Yoshkawa, Chishu Ryu, Tomio Aoki. Screenplay: Yasujiro Ozu, Tadao Ikeda, Masao Arata. Cinematography: Shojiro Sugimoto. Production design: Tatsuo Hamada. Film editing: Eiichi Hasagawa, Hideo Mohara. Music: Senji Ito.
If someone were to ask me what movie by Yasujiro Ozu they should watch first, I'd probably suggest the one that makes the critics' lists of the greatest films ever made, Tokyo Story (1953), or perhaps his very last one, An Autumn Afternoon (1962). I probably wouldn't select his first talkie, The Only Son, but only because the print I saw was blotchy and its soundtrack occasionally noisy. It's also one of his most melancholy films, drenched in the kind of disappointment that Ozu himself must have felt in the Depression year of 1936 as militarism took stronger hold on Japan. It tells the simple story of a single mother, O-Tsune (Choko Iida), who supports her son, Ryosuke (Shinichi Himori), by working in a silk mill as he grows up, gets an education, and moves to Tokyo determined to be a "great man." But when she pays a visit to him there, she discovers that he has married and has an infant son of his own, and that the little family is struggling to make ends meet. The best job he's able to find is teaching night school. His failure to thrive mirrors that of the teacher, Okubo (Chishu Ryu), who mentored him, urging him to further his education, and went to Tokyo himself to advance his career. Now, even the teacher is struggling, supporting his wife and four children by running a small tonkatsu restaurant. Ryosuke, who is living from paycheck to paycheck, borrows money from friends so he can show his mother a good time in Tokyo. They do some sightseeing and he takes her to the movies. The film is Unfinished Symphony (Willi Forst and Anthony Asquith, 1934) a British-Austrian biopic of Franz Schubert that Ozu uses for an ironic allusion: It's about a disappointed genius and it has dialogue in German, echoing the fact that Japan signed a pact with Hitler's Reich in 1936. Ryosuke tries to impress his mother by pointing out that it's "a talkie," but she nods off during the film -- perhaps Ozu's sly dismissal of the medium that he has finally been persuaded to adopt. Though it's touched with humor, The Only Son persists in its melancholy portrait of failed hopes, ending with Ryosuke's vow that he will go back to school and get a better job. O-Tsune returns to her work in the mill, and tells her friends that her son has become a great man, but her face when she's alone reveals the truth.

I read 156 books and graphic novels in 2023. 119 graphic novels, 37 books. 25 non-fiction, 131 fiction. 69 graphic novels, 50 graphic mangas. 15 re-reads.
Starting in March with Unbroken, I started reading a number of books about World War II. I think I had, as ever a goal to read more non-fiction and since there are so many books on the 2 World Wars, they are often the ones that I’m able to check out from the library without a super long wait list. Then Oppenheimer came out this summer so I was more intrigued and decided to read the basis for the film (which is atypical for me outside of comics). Following Unbroken I read a few spy books, Operation Mincemeat and Double Cross in May by Ben McIntyre that were super interesting.
I had previously read The Confidence Men about 2 British POWs from WWI who escaped a Turkish POW camp by (among other things) a Ouija board. I had started reading The Diary of Anne Frank/Diary of a Young Girl sometime this past year I think and finally finished it near the end of the year and Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning in October. I started listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in November or December and read for my family’s book club The Woman Who Smashed Codes about Elizabeth Friedman and her husband who developed cryptology in the US between World War I and II and was treated pretty wretchedly by the US government for her efforts. This was in no small part due to J. Edgar Hoover, who seems to be more and more a villain every time I have the misfortune of encountering him in books and other media.
A manga series I had started last year, The Promised Neverland, I’m close to finishing (I believe there are 20 volumes, which isn’t super long for a manga series. Full Metal Alchemist is 20-something volumes if I remember correctly) and I finally finished Hikaru no Go about a teenager who accidentally finds himself competing in the Japanese game Go due to a haunted Go board in his grandfather’s attic. A web comic that my wife got me interested in, Lore Olympus, retells the story of Persephone and Hades with a combination of contemporary and antiquity culture. The comic is broken up into “seasons” and the second season was recently finished so I wanted to read up to that point while waiting for the end of the third season. Unfortunately, it was long enough ago that I had read up to the end of the first season I ended up having to start over. But this was good as there were a number of things I caught the second time through and appreciated more on a re-read.
I also read the 4th and 5th Wheel of Time books for the second time this past year, which was an interesting experience. There were a lot of things I remembered incorrectly because of the 25ish years since I read them initially. I don’t think I’m going to read the entire series all the way through again, but I might read book 6. I finished re-reading The Sandman (partly due to the release of the Netflix series) and went on a kick of other Vertigo (an imprint of DC Comics that focused on non-superhero books, more adult and more creator-controlled that is now largely if not entirely defunct) titles (the Dead Boy Detectives, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing). Don’t know where I’ll go with that. Also read a decent amount of Spider-Verse comics (mostly Spider-Gwen but one big crossover book that was sort of the culmination of the Spider-Verse storylines (I think?)) that was interesting. Spider-Gwen is a great comic that has yet to lead to the frustration I felt with the later Miles Morales books.
Nagata Kabi’s memoirs about self-esteem, her fraught relationship with her parents, alcoholism and eating problems is both interesting and very frustrating. I am very lucky to not have hardly any of her emotional, mental and health issues that are wound up together but reading her mangas it is hard not to want to shake her when she seems to recover from one life-threatening catastrophe only to work herself into another. I’m morbidly curious about her later volumes about pancreatitis.
Lastly, there were some books on Arthur and some non-fiction or books by African-American authors that I had intended to start or finish that I’m dragging my heels on. We’ll see what happens in the next year with that.

@mauicomiccon DAY 2• Thanks to Gwen, I managed to quickly sneak away from my table in the morning in Artist Alley so I could meet the special guests:
1️⃣ Trina Robbins
2️⃣ Ryan Ottley
3️⃣ Frank Cho
4️⃣ Peter Shinkoda
5️⃣ Willie Ito
(Because I was in a rush to get back to my table, and due to other random distractions, I didn’t get pics on my phone with Rick Leonardi, Steve Leialoha, or Gail Simone) 😞
•I gave each of them a small box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts with a quick drawing of my gecko and some stickers I made of the Maui Comic Con mascots. 😊
